These were light years ahead of everything when they were first produced in the sixties, and still look modern even today. Great watch many thanks for posting it!
Can't believe they are still on the road! Well done,I am envious. I drove a Mammoth Major 8 wheel tipper in London in late 1980s,fantastic wagon! I remember towing a Volvo F86 up Ealing broadway and BOTH wagons were loaded with rubble! AECs were animals and NOTHING sounds like a 760!
I ran AECs with 505 and 760 engines , good engines, the Gardner's I also ran were far more superior on fuel consumption and long life but my driver's preferred the AEC as they would excellerate instead wait and be patient with a Gardner. A Great video, thank you so much for posting it.
I used to drive one of these AECs over the Kaimais twice a day. This clip is fantastic -and takes me back to the good old days. I was driving for Dibble Bros and had an 8-wheeler with a 6-wheel trailer. It was nearly possible ot make toast on the cab window near the exhaust on the uphill stretches - downhill, there was an air-operated slide that shut-off the exhaust for braking assistance. The only issue that I had was worn 'O' rings on the range transfer which slowed some of the changes.
What a classic. I love those AEC trucks! I grew up on AEC's buses, so appreciate the 760's bark, though I think you don't have to an AEC aficionado to appreciate this!!
AEC's were always noisy even with sound proofing with busy sounding engines, difficult cab to sleep across. Thanks for the video, brings back memories.
The Leyland with the TL 11 motor is only a toy compared to the AEC Mammoth Major. Pity Leyland got their hands on AEC or they still might be with us!!!
Thanks for vids I used to work on these, brings back happy memories however as an x mechie I must point out that resting the hand on gear shift causes increased wear on the cog box
Nice vid m8, used one of these as a tanker..lol bloody slow loaded or empty but bloody good fun to be in and always got looks and comments too...the other drivers wouldnt touch it ( coz they couldnt drive it i suspect ) lol Nice one m8 keep on trucking.
She certainly earns her beans. Great ole truck,my Uncle used to haul for a stone quarry and hed bring me out on the days. In England The AEC Merryweather Marquis Fire Truck was the same Cab and Motor. Endless Torque and Character.
Love AEC,s too bits soo, charismatic as a scroty kid in the 1970,s i rode 470, 505,and 691 Reliances as the coach firm Ivory,s had a school contract hauling kids, to and from Sir William Romney,s School Tetbury, Ivory,s had nothing but AEC RelIances with Plaxton Panorama Coach Bodies, before buying a Bristol LH6L ,and later a Leyland Leopard bought new in 1973. the 760,s is my FAV AEC Engine 12,4 litres of pure Southall Iron., Only thing that ruined a Mk6 Mammoth Major is that f---g awful ergo cab with its smily grille, me i, dump that cab and fit the nice Motor Panels Cab off a Guy Big J or an FTF.
Oh i love the ,AECAV760, big noisy and waking the dead as all self respecting AEC,s should do, even their little 505 is awesome with a stub exhaust. RHM Foods based in Stroud had a big fleet of 6x2-6x4 505 Marshalls with the rot box Ergo Cab fitted out as bulk blowers. They barked like hell when thrashed fully loaded with animal feed only having a basic five speed box. Could have done with Volvo,s 16 speed SR52 Range Change Splitter Box as fitted in their F7,s , you had to keep the 505 spinning to get any decent performance. At 138bhp the AEC 505 Marshall was horribly underpowered, especially on the steep hill s around Stroud.

5:30 it's getting better! Proper wagon. That's what a real lorry sounds like. Great memories.

Been in the passenger seat of many AEC's and it is great to hear the sound of a real Lorry again. Thanks for sharing your video mate.

If that was a Volvo the temperature gauge would be through the roof, what a great video featuring a REAL lorry.
Music to my ears. I worked on these engines as an apprentice HGV mechanic. Happy days indeed.
AEC's were always noisy even with sound proofing with busy sounding engines, difficult cab to sleep across. Thanks for the video, brings back memories.
1:18 gives me goose bumps . i grew up next door to a fleet of leylands bulkers and a aec flat bed .

That sound makes me get upset used to go trucking with my dad bring back happy memories
Would have been nice to have had a full screen picture.

Oh that is so good - reminds me of a cab ride I had in a Mammoth Minor of that era - brilliant
I'm a x Driver of the 1960's AEC's I LOVE this model

Could this AEC Mammoth Major crane possibly ex Christchuch Crane Hire/ Dury Crane Hire one appeared in Christchurch in the late 1980s early 1990s.
Great blast from the past !! done plenny of that !
Jim Lindley? Blue Line? St Athan?
good job it wasnt a straight 6 he was driving he is putting that box through the mincer
Needed to so as to keep the rev range between 1500 and 2000. Those V8s didn’t like to be over-revved.
Fantastic. What a beast !
what gearbox, ?, a Fuller 13spd road ranger?
I wish I were in the passenger's seat. nice video keep up the good work
V8s went like hell but not for long!!
sounds better than the leyland octopus
Do we know what make of crane was on the back?
It’s a Tadano crane on the back
how heavy is this truck ?.. it seems to loose speed very quily... but nice old truck.
Consider it's early 60s tech and non turbo.

Aec had a splitter box option for the Mercury and Marshall, obviously not specified by the buyers,
Ears are bleeding after this drive.
love it, 5* :)
I think that's a lorry mounted crane.
it needs a silancer
Ah those were the days, noisy engines rattley cabs roping and sheeting and that smell of diesel all over your clothes, 🤔where we mad!!
Should be repatriated by law. Trans AECs are AECs
