Matt, a few months ago I was struggling with the bad thoughts after a bad shot and rounds spiraling out. I wrote you for advice on FB and you gave me a pep talk about not reacting instinctively like a dog, but being a man and taking it shot by shot. I changed my thought process and approach. Since then I have taken 2 strokes off my HCP and am shooting in the 70s consistently… the way of the playa! Thank you!

totally agree, changing your attitude toward the game irrespective of how you play is game changing. I used to lose it on the course after bad shots. Started following Matty boom boom a few years ago during the first covid lockdown after getting tired of people on another golf group whining about how terrible it was that they couldn´t play or weren´t allowed to take the flag out because of covid restrictions. A month or so prior to covid, I had been to South Africa on holiday and seen the real life divisions there; golf courses with high electric fences and barbed wire and guarded with high security, enough to say it made me realise how truly privileged we are to even be able to play the game at all. While here in Norway, courses were still closed because of winter. At the same time, my Dad was dying from cancer and I couldnt get back because of the travel restrictions.
Golf kept me sane. Golf Sidekick FB brought positivity to an otherwise tough real life situation. I started enjoying the walk, smelling the breeze. Looking at the fluffy clouds and feeling the sunshine. It is just a game after all. If you make a bad shot or lose a ball in the shizzle, nobody dies. Just break out the Tuba music and carry on. Making the mental change is like an epiphany. And when that happens, you suddenly start playing the game you always thought you were capable of, but never quite achieved because you sabotaged yourself with your own negativity.
To highlight what a difference it makes, I played a local course on thursday with a super nice married couple, him off a slightly lower handicap, her off 29hcp. We enjoyed the walk, talked, laughed. About everything. She was obviously not playing so great, but still made some good shots. Me and her hubby, very up and down. We high fived her par and my birdie on the same hole. And we all enjoyed the round. I broke 90 without trying and still making a lot of crap shots. Then yesterday, I played with my regular playing partner. He gets in his own head and complains about everything, how unfair a bounce is when he goes from one bunker to another. Or about the grass growing in a certain direction, or about the position of the trees he´s found. I try to stay positive but the constant negativity feeds into my head and I blow up. Neither of us break 100. So then the only question is, where do I find the Tuba music for our next outing?

A bit rainy today but just misty and not to windy but wasn’t going to play. Watched this video and decided to go out to the course that’s 5 mins from my place. Shot even par for the first time in my life. Been 1 over a handful of times but finally got it done. I feel like I always play better golf after watching one of your videos so thank you.

The abrupt music stop around the 7:26 mark, is why I follow you. No one else in all of the RUclips golf influencer world does this. It's legendary. The best music producers in the history of Hollywood could not do this. George Martin (from the grave) bows at your feet. Phil Spector commented from his prison cell, "It's literally the 'Wall Of Sound' crashing into the wall". Forget fading in and fading out. There is NO "fader" here! It's the "Slam Bam Thank You Ma'am" of music editing. WaddaMusicEditor.

Today, I was 5 over after the first 4 holes. Then I started planning every shot in the decision box. I was 4 over on the next 14 holes, with the expectation of 2 over at best. Not every shot went to plan, but those shots were probably better than if I did not have a plan. Hope it continues tomorrow. Plan for every shot - it works! Thanks Matt!

Hey Playa, the hero shot with the "window" to hit it through describes how I've played golf most of my golfing days.
Even Koepka, when he was out of position in the rough or trees would pitch to safety in the fairway, play his next approach to the middle of the green with a par look. The discipline to pitch back to the fairway and get to the middle of the green for a par look is more challenging than amateurs know but necessary. Keeping the double of the card is more important than saving par. Very difficult to learn and I'm still fighting it. Koepka did not fight it, and it was arguably what won him the PGA. Both Hovland and Conners tried clearing the fairway bunker lip with 9 irons, can't help but wonder if they would have laid up with a wedge and left themselves with a 60-70 yard pitch into the green, Hovland may have had a better chance at tying Koepka on the final hole of the PGA. Champions have an insane amount of course discipline.

Matt: laser focus on the last few holes , especially when a good score is beckoning. I've done it myself. -3 , 4 hole sto go then the score set in and all calmness and serenity and in the zone feeling just dissappear. 1 shot at a time. Even if it's a recovery shot or a 6 foot bogey putt. Remember what brought you to the -3/-2 score. Focus focus focus!
