  • In this video I go over the famous Ford tob failures in these cable driven clutch set ups. I offer what I think might be the perfect solution for throw out bearing longevity in these cars.

I had two clutch cables snap on me and now I finally got a good one. They were all in a BBK package but they may have several manufacturers for that same part some of who make it a little bit different.

I highly recommend getting the Maximum motorsports clutch cable. It's a little bit more but worth the quality & peace of mind.

Thank you for your video, my throw out bearing just went out on me after about 3,000 Miles so I'm pissed lol I was curious how your Timkin bearing is doing and if you happen to have a part #? I appreciate your time thank you!
    Ps. I also have a TR3650 trans

I'm probably close to 2000 miles since replacing. So far it's been great. I ordered it off rockauto.com. it's the only timken one offered I believe. Lmk if not & I'll look into more for you. I did add extra grease to it too. I literally greased up everything really good while I had it apart.

That spring is a big no no. I remember when the New Edge cars were new and suffered from TOB noises. Ford changed the manufacturer for their TOB’s and had no more problems. People also tend to make the mistake of buying “Ford Performance” TOB’s and those are not OEM Ford parts. You have to buy genuine OEM Ford. Timken will make noise too eventually. Every manual trans that has a cable setup has TOB’s that make constant contact with the pressure plate. Imagine the TOB being stationary and you push in the clutch and out of nowhere it’s immediately spinning at 3K-5K rpm’s. That’s what causes failure too.

      Some good points for sure.
Ford went to using national bearings as there oem bearing last I knew. The truth is they all fail because it's not a great design for longevity.
I've been loving the spring. Keeps enough pressure on the shift fork & cable to keep my clutch pedal from rattling/jumping when just cruising around. The springs aren't very stiff at all. I've had no binding issues either with this setup. Also I do have my TOB touching the flywheel just slightly with little force. It's holding up great so far. Way better then the last TOB.
But yeah, people argu both ways on how the tob fail due to having constant contact & no contact. Both have very valid points.

How did this work out for you??, I just started getting the noise from the bearing when I started it today…What springs did you use and where did you get them?? Also does it make the pedal harder to compress…I remember Justin svt doing a video on this, but I haven’t had a problem until today..

If you have a firewall adjuster... try tightening it(the cable) a little bit by screwing out the firewall adjuster. That may get noise to go away with a few clicks.
I haven't put any street miles on this set up yet. I just got 2 light compression style springs from hardware store. I believe there both 3.25inches long. A single 6-6.5 inch spring would be most ideal... but I have yet to find. The springs are light enough that i can compress by my fingers. It has no effect on the pedal effort. If you can't compress the spring by hand with ease.... it's way too much and just overkill imo.

@@NewEdgeDesigns no problem, I appreciate that! Sometimes you can get lucky and keep adjusting the firewall adjuster to make tob noise go away and prolong it.
Due to the fact my shift fork was busted... I was unable to make tob noise go away... but in the past adjusting the cable/adjuster has made TOB noise go away for me too. 👍

Thanks for the video. A lot of these throw out bearings do not spin true right out of the box. I have a new one in my garage that I didn't use because it is not pressed together correctly causing it not to spin in a perfect circle. The number on it is 614014 and it came from Autozone. The bearing from Ford Racing looked exactly the same down to the irregular spin. I could be wrong, but this tells me that these bearings from Timken, National, and Ford Racing are all being pressed by the same crappy machine. AND this probably means that all 3 of these come from China. ALL crap comes from China!! Anyway, I do like the spring trick you did and will try it tomorrow on my Maverick because once again I have the freaking TOB noise, and if i can help preserve my bearing by not constantly spinning with a simple spring trick, im doing that first to see how long it will last. I got a 4.6 dohc with the 3650 out of a 2001 Cobra in it .

My timken bearing looks different then the Ford racing/national one. I bought it off rockauto.com. it's the 614014 part # too🤷‍♂️. It has almost like a plastic type sleeve ... instead of being all metal. Makes me a bit nervous. But on the other hand it seems all these tob suck too.
I'm hoping this spring trick works. 🤞

@@jimmyjamesgarage3290 Does your Timken bearing spin true? The new one I have you can tell it's off even before spinning it. I'm going to order the same one as yours from Rockauto if the spin is true. And maybe leave the spring trick on it. I'm going out in the garage now to start on it. I'll let you know how stuff works out.

@@robertw2902 it's weird to be honest. My timken bearing has a different bearing set up I feel. It actually has side to side play on its face that meets the diaphragm fingers. I just threw some extra grease in it as I read in some forums. I don't believe it's a ball bearing set up like my ford performance one. I've heard good things about timken and have had good luck with their wheel bearings.... so I'm just gonna send it. There had been so many recent bad reviews on the Ford performance tob I just don't trust it anymore.

@@jimmyjamesgarage3290 I installed a spring set up with enough tension to pull the bearing off the fingers of the pressure plate, but that made my clutch disengagement all the way down to the stop. Also, the springs I used made the pedal very hard to push. I might try a lighter spring set up, but I would still have friction plate engagement about 3/4 inch from the floor stop. I broke apart an old hard drive and got the magnet out of it so I might try ditching the spring and try a magnet to pull the arm back when I let off the clutch pedal. Just seems to be a no win situation. BTW, I was successful in stopping the tob Chatter, lol

    • @jimmyjamesgarage3290

@@robertw2902 I actually have 2 3.25in long springs. They are a light spring. I can't feel them in my pedal. So far no binding issues when I tested it. My pedal starts to engage about 1 inch off the floor if that. My car is on Jack stands at moment. The tires stop spinning as soon as I push clutch to floor while in gear. So I know the clutch is engaging/disengaging all the way.

  • @codcade
    @codcade Год назад

So by design, and they will do it with a properly functioning factory quadrant, the TOB is meant to make constant contact with the clutch, now in theory that’s great, that’s how I have mine setup with mild preload with my FWA but idk if it truly last longer that way

Hi..I'm in Garden City Michigan!...I have an '01 Mustang GT with the same tranny and it does exactly the same thing as yours, it seems to not be as bad when it warms up...
