  • Ever had a clutch make loud squealing noises? just like with any car part, it could be a few different problems, but the throwout bearing in a clutch is a possible culprit.
    Have you ever wondered what happens when a throw out bearing goes bad in a manual transmission? Here we compare a good vs bad throwout bearing and learn where that sound is coming from.
    Hope you enjoy!

      But it’s not. The bearing does rotate when it contacts the pressure plate bc it’s bolted to a spinning flywheell

    I just had my clutch replaced and the low singing squirrel only happens when the clutch petal is completely released and just the slightest of pressure it stops. The mechanic decided a cylinder slave replacement would get rid of the noise. I later learned from peeps who drive stick, it is the throw out bearing needing something which would the engine dropped again to be corrected to actually complete a proper clutch installment. The mechanic did mention the possibility of this when I picked up the car. The goal was to drive it for 500km to work in the clutch. So I did a road trip with CAA in my back pocket. Gawd help them if that happened eh. It's been a month since the installation and some other work done so now I decided I'm putting it all in writing prior to that appointment.

    British cars once used graphite throwout bearings, they wore while engaged. But no bearing, just the graphite wear surface. Good reasons to put in neutral at stoplights. More it's used, the more it wears. Cool and different than most

    This video is wrong according to my Ford 351 with a four-speed because the springs are attached to the flywheel and the flywheel spims the spring spin & the throwout bearing comes in contact with the springs fingers and the bearing spins and the inside that is around the shaft stay stationary because it's on a separate shaft that is bored through the stationary shaft. So the outside spins and the part around the shaft stay stationary because it is locked into the forks anyway it can't spin.

    • @waltershambaugh7026
      @waltershambaugh7026 9 месяцев назад +1

      The video is wrong. He is explaining it backwards so to speak from how it is. Throw out bearings are attached to a fork. It's fix and doesn't spin at all with the clutch not pressed. As the clutch is pressed the face of the throwout bearing contacts the pressure plate (which is spinning with the motor). When they make contact the face of the throwout bearing spins. The back inside part of the throwout bearing never spins. Thus why it needs to be a bearing.

    I have a Mack RD600 with an Eaton Fuller 13sp. The clutch was new 2 years ago but it sounds like the t/o bearing is seized up. As soon as you engage the clutch you here it, it sounds like the PTO but I know that’s fine. The bearing won’t take any grease, and I’m stuck because I wanna sell the truck and not put a whole new clutch in, any suggestions? Thanks

    Thanks for posting this information. Could a bad or worn throw out bearing cause difficulty downshifting into first gear at stops and gear grinding shifting into reverse? My Chevelle shifts fine thru all gears until I get to stoplight. Will not let me shift to first until I turn engine off. I’ve adjusted clutch as far as I could also.

      My Subaru does the same thing. I’ve found while I’m stopped and trying to put it in reverse, I won’t be able to pull the stick all the way into reverse or it’ll grind. I’ve found while stopped, press in the clutch, shift into first and then keep clutch down take it out of first and put it in reverse and it shifts no problem. Not sure the reason why as i haven’t researched a whole lot into it but any thing you’ve learned about the issue I’d love to hear.

  • @minenachos
    @minenachos Год назад +3

    You're very close on the explanation however the center of the bearing is static. the fork applies pressure on the center. The bearing face spins with the pressure plate. When pressure is applied it compresses the bearing and makes it quieter. The compression also changes the resonate frequency of the material deadening the sound. The same way your hand does a ringing bell when you touch it.

    • @PetersonBrosAutomation
      @PetersonBrosAutomation  Год назад +4

      You are right, and thanks for pointing this out, shows my lack of experience with understanding clutches. Seeing the pressure plate bolts lining up with the flywheel should have been a dead giveaway that the pressure plate does indeed rotate. I need to do an 'edit' video and link it in there soon as I can! Thanks!

      You are welcome. I know how the comment section can be a little mean sometimes and a clutch by itself is really confusing. Without the engine and transmission it's hard to explain how all that works together however if anybody can do it I believe you can. The video on the hydrostatic drive is a perfect example very good work.

    • @Aidan.Sheahan
      @Aidan.Sheahan Год назад +3

      In my experience no. The TOBs are usually sealed and use grease instead, so trans oil wouldn't help. They're cheap to buy for every-day cars, and get replaced any time the trans comes off of the car, hence the name :) Trans comes off, throw out bearing, put new one on! Hope this helps

      I suppose if the clutch kit isn't that expensive, and you're digging into it already, it's probably not a bad idea to just replace it.
      If the bearing really is sticking too bad, then yes, that friction will absolutely wear down the spring fingers of the pressure plate.

    • @davelinkson1
      @davelinkson1 Год назад

      Good explanation..thanks, on occasion I would get a screeching noise from my MGB and there appeared to be a problem with the pedal being so rough to operate so on disassembly of the clutch found that the carbon bearing of the throwout (release) bearing had completely gone so total clutch breakdown was imminent, also found that at sometime in the distant past the wrong pedal assembly had been fitted, one from a later model..

    • @mikegregory2535

      Split the transmission from the engine block is the only way to get to the throwout bearing. That is alot of work. Theory is that you always replace throwout bearing and clutch at the same time, "whenever the case is sperated," and the bearing outlasts the clutch. No need to lube it.

    • @joe-hp4nk
      @joe-hp4nk День назад +1

      @@mikegregory2535 True, the price of a bearing is way cheaper than labor to split the trans and engine. Also driving habits go a long way to extend the life of the bearing.
