Hi, thanks for this video!! Please make more with this set up if you can! Quick question: Can you shoot in the recording format 6K 2.4:1 with these lenses instead of 3.7K anamorphic?
Yeah man, it’s one of my favorite pieces cause I can Mount my monitor right in front of the handle and keep it low profile. amzn.to/3okvime Cool thing is it’s actually half off on Amazon right now too I just saw.

Your ending up with a much more cropped image by shooting in anamorphic mode. It’s no wonder you favored the 32mm. I would recommend trying shooting with the full sensor next time. Favor anamorphic lenses with 1.33x desqueeze for that reason.
Such a pity our local rental did not purchase ef interchangeable mount for these and all pl to ef/ mft adapters on the market seem sort of fishy. Had a chance to use those on a rented Gemini 5k body, they didn't do too well unless there was strong backlight or bokehlicious background :/
Yeah, that is a bummer! I've talked to a couple rental houses that only have the PL version as well, which is dumb cause they're missing out on everyone that would've rented them for EF! I agree with your experience there, the lenses look their best with a great bokeh background or good backlight, otherwise their unique qualities don't shine through near as strong.
That B-kit from Atlas Orion sounds really great. It's the focal lengths that you'd use to shoot an action movie. I just did the calculations (using full frame 35mm photography film equivalent). With the EF mount and a 0.71x speedbooster, mounted on a BMPCC 4k (with its 1.9x crop), the B-kit lenses become: 21.5mm, 33.5mm, and 54mm. Which are the 3 kinds of lenses you'd need to shoot a whole Tarantino-style movie with. At $28k though, still kinda steep for most of us.
Eugenia Loli yeah, they’re really awesome lenses! I think the focal lengths are nearly perfect for what I need and apparently for the next Tarantino movie as well! Haha! I haven’t seen anyone adapt them to the Pocket 4k yet, but if someone does, I’d love to see it!
i got the EF mount versions of the lens. the rental house i got them from offered both options, they just had to know in advance to swap the mount. luckily many cine lenses have user interchangeable mounts now!
Michael Simo I used the 32mm on the 6k for a handful of shots and it looked nice. If you watch the ad I posted in the description, there’s a shot of a girl playing guitar, that should give you an idea of the 32mm look
Do you think the BMPCC 6K + Orion Atlas Anamorphic lenses would balance on the Ronin RS2 since that has a higher weight capacity? Or is it an issue of size (being too big to not hit the stabilizer's arms)?
@@chadwin I managed to balance the BMPCC 6K + Helios 58mm + Kowa B&H + Rectilux HardcoreDNA (Vari-Diopter) on the RS2... sure, absolutely at it's limits then ;) ... don't recall the exact weight of that combo but I can't really imagine it's (much) less than the Atlas... still have to rent one and try
Lasha Nebieridze thanks man! Yeah, I think I’d actually buy the 50 mm if I could only buy one, but the 32mm is very close second. I like the wide field of view on the 32, but the shallow depth of field and less distortion is nice on the 50.
Would love to see more about your rig. Looks crazy front heavy, but since your using the tilta nano couldn’t you slide the shoulder pad further to the front and get the camera further back? Or would the camera be to wide and scratch you face?
Z Red yeah, it’s pretty front heavy with the lenses but it’s not too bad. You could definitely rearrange the shoulder pads and v mount battery some to help counterweight it. I’m gonna make another video all about the shoulder rig soon
I havent used these lenses specifically, but might be on an upcoming project... Looking at the lenses, is there a filter thread on the front? It kida looks like there is one. Would be nice to attached a clear glass filter to protect the lens
Michael Frymus yeah, I definitely recommend them for any project that has the budget for them. They do have a 100mm front thread, so you could add a filter. I just opted to use a matte box and filters cause it was easier for me.
Can you shoot in, for example 6k, and desqueeze the image in your ext. monitor (like the shinobi) or in post? Or it has to be always in that 3.7k mode? - Great video by the way!
zFaanTeee yeah, you could probably do that to get the full 6k resolution. However, when you de squeeze the image later in post production, it won’t be your standard widescreen 2:39:1 ratio, it will be much wider and more skinny. 3.7k windows the sensor and creates the correct aspect ratio.
Gio Roof Expert yeah I would recommend shooting anamorphic mode internally. I don’t actually use the NINJA V for external recording cause the 6k does internal prores
@@chadwin Id be interested to see the 6k raw desqueezed and cropped in a 4k timeline to the right ratio v. the anamorphic mode. Im thinking it may be pretty similar
Josh Kidd Films yeah, I haven’t tried shooting in normal 6k with anamorphics yet to see how it would look. But next time I rent them, I’ll def experiment with it.
Max Soto yeah, trust me you’d love it! They’re definitely very heavy lenses so I shot shoulder rig, handheld and slider the whole time. I don’t have a strong enough gimbal or the muscles to hold them up all day. 😂
Amazing video bro! Keep em coming☄🏅 What size of filters you are using with the fotga dp500? I have dp3000 matte box, you reckon 4x4 103mm filter would work with the atlas orions? Cheers🏆🤘
How do you feel about the smallhd focus monitor. I was going to buy it but there are a lot of bad reviews, talking about the fragile screen. Was your experience with smallhd or the atomos shinobi monitor?
David Perez I actually really love the SmallHD Focus! I’ve never had any bad issues with it. The screen seem pretty durable unless maybe you drop it face down on concrete or rocks 🤷🏼♂️ I like it better than the Shinobi because you can pinch to zoom in, it’s lighter, and doesn’t get as hot. ruclips.net/video/Fe39chNMYOs/видео.html
Chadwin Smith thanks a lot for the quick response! What would feel about the smallhd focus oled vs the lcd? Have you tried it? The brightness is just the only thing for me to pull the trigger. Really aprecciate your opinion!
David Perez yeah, I haven’t tried the OLED version yet. I know the LCD is 800 NITS but not sure what the OLED is. It’s definitely not the brightest monitor ever, but with a hood or staying out of direct sunlight it’s good enough.
My biggest issue with this is that anamorphic mode crops the hell out of the 6K sensor, throwing away half the sensor if you use 2x Orions. I'd rather try & find a 1.5x so I can use the full 6K to get a Cinemascope 2.66x. Granted 1.5x'ers are a bit tought to find, but not impossible.
SilverSulu he’s super mistaken about only being able to shoot anamorphic in “anamorphic mode” you can shoot in any resolution BRAW or ProRes (both codecs allow for no sensor windowing) and you can set the built in display to desqueeze 1.33X If you want to get a live preview with desqueeze of 2x or 1.5x or whatever you’ll have to use a capable external monitor like the atomos ninja V... I know all this because I have the bmpcc 6k and I shoot anamorphic all the time with the full 6k sensor. No wonder he is only wanting to use the 32mm lens because he’s shooting with a windows sensor for no reason. There is no reason you can’t shoot anamorphic in any of the available resolutions. 👍🏻
Hey Chadwin, thank you for the informative video. I'm interested in picking up a pocket 6k but there's 1 bit of information I can't find anywhere. On BM's website, it states that the 3.7k anamorphic is windowed. (Not full s35 sensor) How is it windowed? is it fullsensor height 4x3 when using 2x? or is it cropped in on the sensor to only occupy the 3.7k portion of the 6k sensor since it is 3.7k BM Raw? I understand that the width will be doubled after desqueeze, but it would be good to know the rough crop factor in anamorphic.
Presumably, sensor windows to conform to 2.35/2.39 aspect ratio, otherwise you end up with an extremely wide frame that wouldn't find much practical use. This is because while having in camera desqueeze options, bmpcc4k/bmpcc6k are not well suited for use with anamorphic lenses because sensor aspect is 1.85:1. You need to have a 4:3 aspect sensor (found in Gh5/alexa mini etc) to utilize full potential of those 2x squeeze lenses.
@@DastanZhumagulov Thanks for the reply, I actually found the specs for the exact video resolution, at 3.7k being (3728 x 3104) which approximates to about a 5:4 aspect ratio. (with 2x desqueeze becomes 2.5:1 in camera) I overlayed that on top of the full 6k (6144 x 3456) and I got an idea of the crop. It's still nearly full sensor height with only a 352 pixel vertical crop, and the diagonal crop factor without desqueeze is 1.45, with a 2x desqueeze it is 0.87. The majority of the crop comes from the width changing from 16:9 to a 5:4 ratio, which gets equalized in post desqueeze. With my calculations based on the vertical pixel crop, a 50mm 2x anamorphic will become a 55mm vertical and 27.5mm horizontal, factoring in the 1.56x apsc crop, becoming a FF equivalent FOV of 85.8mm Vertical and 42.9mm horizontal after desqueeze.
@@sifanren7288 Hey man! It's a 6:5 sensor mode for this anamorphic. 6/5 = 1.2. 1.2 x 2x de-squeeze = 2.40:1 CinemaScope. The sensor is a very small "window" - there is only a 10% sensor height crop of the S35 sensor. The sensor's height here is x3456, but the 6:5 anamorphic mode height is x3104. Historically, 4:3 anamorphic capture was the industry standard for motion film, but with the digital age, there is really only one other standard besides 4:3 that is used for anamorphic capture, and it is 6:5.
@@chadwin Yes but not only that. You can also reframe and you actually have more VERTICAL resolution too, because, for some reason, on the 6K the anamorphic mode also crops away at the bottom and top.
@@Helsingborg36 if you use the full 6k sensor vs the 3.7k anamorphic mode is there still a way to desqeeze the footage in the monitor ? I belive its in the settings somewhere?
I thought these were Super 35 lenses, not full frame large format. They have an adapter to make them full frame, I thought. Why would they crop in extra on a super 35 sensor, it is confusing.
CoolhandLukeSkywalkr the atlas lenses are actually larger than Super 35 by a bit. The image circle covers up to 31mm. So not quite full frame at 35mm. However, since the stretch the image so wide, it should basically cover a full frame.
Paritosh Nayak Zeiss, Cooke, and all the other anamorphics are gorgeous as well, but much more expensive to rent or buy. Atlas Orion’s are the cheapest, but best anamorphics on the market IMO.
@@chadwinI guess then it would be okay for someone trying to replicate the ultrawide aspect ratio from Ben Hur or The Hateful Eight, but otherwise, you could crop the sides of the image to fit the normal widescreen ratio. Then again, it would be a little difficult to frame your shots that way.
David Tate yeah. If you want ultra ultra wide and skinny, you definitely could. The thing is, once you crop in to cut off the edges and get a more normal aspect ratio, you’re losing all the extra resolution anyways...that’s why I just use the 3.7k anamorphic mode and then upres to 4k.
Peter Olejnik that’s true! Sirui is changing the game with their new Anamorphics. Unfortunately they’re only 1.3x squeeze so it doesn’t have nearly the effect and quality of true cinema scope. These are 2x squeeze and cover full frame like you said, so much much nicer, but the price is way out of the park for most everyone, myself included. Even the Vazen lenses are only 1.8x squeeze and don’t even cover APSC sadly
Setup looks awesome. Footage looks just ok, nothing special. And no reason to use anamorphic lenses to get those simple shots. Not a hate, but it made an ANTI advertisement for me. I guess it can be amazing in right hands. PS. Please, put less talking head to reviews. Work more on real footage and cinematography.
Just another example of how lighting and production design make all the difference! This was bmpcc and atlas orions: ruclips.net/video/TQ6SGvMUwUE/видео.html
no offense, but im not sure you know what an anamorphic lens actually is. but I honestly wouldn't fret over it, they're not meant to be bought by the average film maker. they create them to be rented by studios. Most of us dont love or hate lenses, they're either right for the job or they're not. obviously theres quality issues with cheaper lenses that can cause us to not like them, but thats a clinical reason. some of your favorite movies were shot on anamorphic lenses. this was a discussion of high quality anamorphic lenses, not a film.
The Filmmaking Channel the glass DEFINITELY helps make the image what it is, but I’ve seen these on Sony’s before and they def look better on blackmagics and reds

I think you loose quality doing it that way as the internal recording has a higher bit rate than what the shinobi can process
Great work!!!!💯💪🏾🔥🙏🏾
Thanks 💯
I would love to try anamorphic. But my concern is the weight and the proper setup to use it properly. One day hopefully I'll be able to use one :)
Max Soto yeah, trust me you’d love it! They’re definitely very heavy lenses so I shot shoulder rig, handheld and slider the whole time. I don’t have a strong enough gimbal or the muscles to hold them up all day. 😂
@@chadwin Ive been comfortable with light setups. Anamorphic will be a whole new experience haha. Great video!!
Max Soto yeah, going light and nimble is perfect for run and gun! It’s definitely a very heavy setup to use all day long.
Where can I rent one of these lenses?
Julio Lucio just google your local rental houses and see if they have any available.
Hi! Is that lens PL mount? If yes, how did you managed to mount it on the pocket 6k?
Looks dope ! But can you shoot non anamorphic mode on the Pocket 6K with those lenses? or are you restrained to anamorphic only?
you could shoot non anamorphic but then your aspect ration will be super wide and kind of wack.
Nice! Btw what’s the shoulder rig?
could you link me to the lens support you used? as well as some drop in 4x4 filters? they don't come with the matte box right? I just ordered it
Amazing video bro! Keep em coming☄🏅
What size of filters you are using with the fotga dp500? I have dp3000 matte box, you reckon 4x4 103mm filter would work with the atlas orions?
Cheers🏆🤘
xeqtrmkd hey thanks man!! Yeah, I use standard 4x4 filters in the fotga mattebox and they cover the front glass element of the atlas lenses fine. 👌🏻
I was wondering the same thing... if my 4x4 glass will work with these lenses. I was advised by a rental house to use the 4x5 glass.
Beautiful lenses. I hope to get a set for my next feature film.
Axel Arzola yes, they’re definitely worth shooting on if you can! Such a gorgeous image.
@@davidpm41 I am a Smallhd OLED user and it is 500 nits. It will be hard to see the frame under the sunlight. Even in cloudy day.
David Perez it is 350 nits. Not 500. I was wrong
Vazen 40mm and z cam e2 is the way to go. Dope video though!
Hayden Goldsworthy yeah, the Vazen would be cool! It’s still too expensive for me though. I can only rent anamorphics For now.
Chadwin Smith definitely get that! Checked out the full ad and you killed it dude!
Man you need an Easyrig! Great vid man!
Yeah I do! Haha just haven't spent the money to get one yet....
SilverSulu he’s super mistaken about only being able to shoot anamorphic in “anamorphic mode” you can shoot in any resolution BRAW or ProRes (both codecs allow for no sensor windowing) and you can set the built in display to desqueeze 1.33X
If you want to get a live preview with desqueeze of 2x or 1.5x or whatever you’ll have to use a capable external monitor like the atomos ninja V...
I'm about to get this, but couldn't you just put it in 6k 4:3?
DP C hmmm, maybe, I haven’t actually found an option for that.
@@chadwin I got the camera and nothing. I mean, for years we've been doing 5k prores on the gh4 and this camera can't? It boggles the mind.
DP C yeah, I’m not sure why they don’t have it. The anamorphic mode does a crop, but it can only do 3.5k
Great review!
Also are you a veteran? Saw ur grunt style shirt lol
Where are you located as well if you don’t mind me asking!
Mike Javier thanks man! I’m not, but my father and grandfather are vets. I’ll always support our troops 🇺🇸
I’m based in AZ!
Historically, 4:3 anamorphic capture was the industry standard for motion film, but with the digital age, there is really only one other standard besides 4:3 that is used for anamorphic capture, and it is 6:5.
when you dont use the anamorphic mode you get a bit wider FOV.
Z Red yeah! I just wanted the exact 2:39 aspect ration, but you could definitely go wider out of anamorphic mode
Why not ziess lenses
Paritosh Nayak Zeiss, Cooke, and all the other anamorphics are gorgeous as well, but much more expensive to rent or buy. Atlas Orion’s are the cheapest, but best anamorphics on the market IMO.
Bro have you tried your 6k and 40 Orion on rs3 pro?
I haven’t, but honestly these lenses are MASSIVE! They’re difficult To balance on larger gimbals even like the Movi Pro.
@@chadwin i did.it s working yes
@@yaroslavkovalenko6746 that’s awesome! I’d love to see it
are in texas?.. good stuff, congtats!
JT Heggz nope, I’m in Arizona!
what happen if you shoot in 6k?
Potentially you could shoot in 6k, but once you de-squeeze it the footage will be very wide and skinny...way past normal widescreen of 2:39:1
@@chadwinI guess then it would be okay for someone trying to replicate the ultrawide aspect ratio from Ben Hur or The Hateful Eight, but otherwise, you could crop the sides of the image to fit the normal widescreen ratio.
Nice video bro!
AZ Barber haha thanks dude! Great BTS shots and boxing skills
Cool Video. Thanks Man.
Sobhan Gh hey thanks for watching!!
T2, what's that in f?
Benedek Fodor it’s very similar to F2, but the measurements are done slightly different. Google can explain it better than I can! Sorry 😆
Benedek Fodor f1.8 = t2
Lol glad to hear you're using Davinci. Welcome brother.
eantays 😂😂 Yep! I’m not using it all the time, but I do use it to edit BRAW, colorgrade, etc. I’m still using FCPX as my main editor
@@chadwin but now you see what I mean about it's color grading potential!
BM has since released an update for Premiere Pro.
Villeins09 yeah, I saw that and I’m so jealous! I really wish they would add BRAW support to FCPX cause that’s where I edit quickest.
@@chadwin Lol..It's possible but I highly doubt it..
Villeins09 🥺🥺🥺 I really want it though. Transferring footage between editors sucks.
THANK YOU for this.
Jennifer Pirante of course, thanks for watching!!
0:21 not anymore. That said, with everyone going FF lenses...this might change. ;)
@@chadwin Looking forward to seeing more shots with what you make. I hope to try out the Cooke and Arri Master Anamorphic with the BMPCC 6k setup.
i managed to get that same setup on a ronin 1.
we barely see any demos in this video. whyyyy
watch the ad we shot all on theses lenses. linked in desc. ruclips.net/video/w7XBPlNjsNQ/видео.html
CORRECTION* you can now easily edit BRaw in premier pro
Most of us dont love or hate lenses, they're either right for the job or they're not. obviously theres quality issues with cheaper lenses that can cause us to not like them, but thats a clinical reason. some of your favorite movies were shot on anamorphic lenses. this was a discussion of high quality anamorphic lenses, not a film.
oh hey you were on reddit. haha, i thought i recognized the frames
Daymian Mejia haha yep, I shared the video on reddit!
Me looking for money so I can purchase those lenses: y cheque mi casa y cheque mi cuarto y nada

White guy called an $8000 anamorphic lens “affordable”.... sounds about right.
