2025…everything is boring anamorphic. Why I shoot 16k 360 video for RUclips. 2028 why virtual reality is cold and unauthentic and why I shoot 8mm film.
I love that you shoot film. But anamorphic is the best way to tell stories. To bring a human element in the the project, keep the imperfections. But 8mm is not the way forward. 16mm minimum.

Pretty sure your comment is hard to misinterpret film bruh, and not incorrect at all. You were definitely giving "gear doesn't matter" vibes. My point was just challenging your 'high-level' philosophical stance, being choice of lighting, lenses and filters is obviously very important. Might want to show a little more of the good side of your personality when trolling for subs in other creator's comment's sections. Try educating, instead of insulting. : ) @@CineDailies
I gotta admit the lighting in this video is excellent. You are on a different track than I am. I shoot Multicam live theatre, concerts, and dance shows, but I did learn something and I did enjoy it.
Great to see fella. Been using the 35/50/85 Great Joys x1.8 and it’s just make you fall in love with video again. Chuffed to see you using them so beautifully. See ya :)
Good to see this face! You’re right chief, things are blurring into one. I’ve just bought a dirty Helios 44-2 to try switch things up. Looking forward to more videos with that anamorphic bro 😮❤
Dive is just a complete masterpiece. I've watched it probably ten times at least. The smooth contrast along with the anamorphic wide landscape view is what really sold it to me. One question remains though - and I actually watched the bts just for an answer to that question and was left without an answer: Who actually filmed you? Who was operating the camera and how closely did you instruct this person?
Thank you mate 👊🏻 His name is Oli Loughran, good friend of mine and we work regularly on corporate, other work. (Guy from my Jordan Petra Vlog) He’s a great camera operator
In terms of how closely I instructed him, almost every shot was completely storyboarded. So I was very clear on how I wanted it shot almost shot by shot. However Oli is a great operator and can take full initiative and I trust his instinct if he wants to play with it. Class bloke too
Cool video, I’d say the first and primary characteristic of anamorphic lenses is composition. It’s why cropping will never truly give an anamorphic composition…. If you back a camera up to give the same fov of an anamorphic lens, the perspective will be different… it’s the only thing you can’t fake about the anamorphic look, everything else can be added in post.
Good to see you back, man! Could you please also create a video to differentiate between the 'fake anamorphic' and 'lens anamorphic' vibes? Some people try to emulate the anamorphic look in videos artificially and claim that using an anamorphic lens is overkill.
Hey dude! Sure, I know a lot of people that have anamorphic emulation, and I think it actually works somewhat well. I just like to shoot like it. Glad to be back myself 😁
What I understood from your video is that anamorphic lenses have sharp centers and soft edges, vignetting occurs in the corners, and there is distortion as well. Essentially, the characteristics that we typically avoid with normal lenses are becoming defining features with these lenses.
These features are something that in recent times camera companies have tried to remove, making the image look a bit too perfect in my opinion. The main characteristics that people usually want is the squeeze to create the oval/stretched bokeh and Flares
You nailed it with the bottleneck comment. Everything has become so affordable (all things considered; still not cheap) and thus people are a lot harder to impress. You feel now the only way to stand out is to aim for more of the "imperfect". Some of the footage that I have shot recently that people have complimented me on was shot on old vintage lenses.
I've loved anarmorphic lenses since i got into cameras, its so good that now average people can afford them ! I've currently got the Sirui apsc ones as when i got them there was no full frame ones, defo going to change them up for the full frame ones soon
The digital agencies will insist that it is all about a massive square / vertical framed image (to fill a lazy viewer's mobile screen) to get any traction (hot tip: false metrics and they lie by emphasizing a doom scroll 1 second appearance over an actual engaged audience that watches and absorbs the craft) I am constantly pushing back on vertical/square framing but, right now, it is like trying to hold back the tide. "if the shot doesn't fill the frame the audience wont watch it " they say (bs) There is a place for square and vertical - pieces to camera actually arent too bad - and food shot close and crunchy in 6k open gate for reframing actually works ok - but when the agency insists on cropping epic drone and gimbal landscape shots to vertical (killing all 3d and epicness of the shot just to obey the metrics) and don't even register the compromiiuse - then you can only throw your hands up in despair. So the timing on this video was great VERTICAL VIDEO MUST DIE!!!
You might be really interested in rear anamorphic lenses. you'll get the character, without the flares. Laowa also has a rear PL anamorphic adapter that you can use on spherical lenses. You have to use PL lenses, and they can't have protruding rear elements (so you can't use the nisi athenas for example.
sadly with tic toc /reels & now You tube shorts revolution I think we as film makers really do have to think more about our look of our films , there is a total overload of video content now & doing something simple 5 years ago was cool & worked but now nobody gets excited about what we do . So yeah I think the anamorphic look does make our footage look different & stand out..
