It’s not impossible but gosh dang it, this tested every once of patience I have. This one has roots but those roots are still too short to get into soil. I’ll wait until I have at least 1-2 inches. You can propagate ZZ’s through stem, leaves, and through division but do know that ZZ’s and snake plants are the absolute slowest to root. I changed water every week and kept near a window during the propagation process. How long does it take for you plant to propagate? There’s no way to truly give a definite answer, usually a couple weeks, but some are definitely much longer than others.
Needed around 6 months to root a zz Raven leaf. Now i have a potato and some few roots. Propagated in water at first but wasn't happy. Got à cup with Moss and perlite and then it trived. Hope this tip will help
Trying to propagate a snake plant and it took forever to develop roots a month or so to get four that was less than a inch long. I decided to go ahead and move it to soil. It’s doing well and I probably won’t be doing much other than watering for a long time. It seems to be rooting well slowly but surely getting more and more stable on it’s on in the soil just taking forever.
You are so right mine took forever over six months and I gave up bought a plant broke two stems and a couple of weeks later they had roots and then I don’t know what they are called but balls started growing. I added fertilizer to the water that may have speed up the process. Thank you for the education I love the way you explain and add your humor that cracks me up. I follow on IG and tik tok.
You know why I love your videos? I feel satisfied after one, because I don't have to wait for the next part. Many shorts now are divided into parts, even though the process doesn't take a lot of time. This video took you 5 months to complete, and it's not divided. I really appreciate it❤
I unalived my zz plant so I had to clip many cuttings in order to give myself a second chance at this zz. It’s been 3-4 months & I’m patiently waiting :-)
I did this! My friends cat broke off a piece of hers and I didn’t have a ZZ yet so I took it home in january and put it in water. Now it’s got loads of roots and made a bulb too! Hoping i can transfer it to soil soon but I’m scared 😂
I’ve had great success rooting both stems and leaves in perlite under a grow light! I treated them just like the mother plant and let the perlite completely dry out before I watered them again. They are 3 months old now with about 2” roots and lovely rhizomes! I’m about to pot them up!
I'm propagating one now. It's taking a while but I have another one I propagated and it didn't take that long to root, maybe about 3 weeks. I use root hormone.
oooh same! i tried the leaves separately and a couple of leaves on a stem, most of them rotted, but two are starting to develop roots after like a month and a half😅 but ill let them live 😂
I can’t recommend using stratum enough for ZZ cuttings! What used to take 4-5 months to make the tiniest rhizome, game me quarter sized rhizomes in 2 months or less 😭
I rooted a bunch of leafs in some moist sand and got the cutest little rhizomes in 2 months. I did have them covered to start and I set it and forget it kind if planting.
A branch of the ZZ plant of a colleague in the office got broken by mistake and I took this branch and out it in water. I can confirm that it tool ages to get roots, but it also too ages to grow after I plated it. There was no chenge like forever and suddenly there were new branches comming out. Now this plant is huge and needs repotting again. :D
That's because for ZZs the whole "stem" is not a stem but just one leaf. It's hard to propagate a piece of a leaf, although a lot easier than a single plate. I once accidentally broke a ZZ leaf and hadn't had a nerve to throw it out. Took 1,5 months to grow some roots in water and then I repotted it. I think I've got a nice couple of rhizomes in 3 months after that.
I started one almost that exact size on April 16th of this year and it already has a few roots about an inch and a half long and is developing its “potatoes”. I started adding a couple of drops of Super Thrive to the water each week as I changed it out and it’s doing really well. I also started some with just leaves, via the styrofoam disk method made popular on here and they are doing well too. They have only been in water for just over a month and they have tiny roots starting to emerge. 🙂
Yes. Ages. I was just getting into propagation and I found a couple of broken ZZ stems and leaves at Home Depot. (I do not know why they put plants so close you can’t get a buggy between them. So many plants get mangled). Anyway, I was so excited to try to grow them. SIX MONTHS later they are still in water. Lol
My three bulbs have 1 stem each.... One is getting a second but i feel like the old will just die off bc why be a lush zz when you can be a heartbreaker? The funniest thing is it's a six inch pot... Like hello zz you are taking up a lot of real estate here! I'm hoping I'll find a zz at the grocery store bc they're expensive online now and i just want it for the fullness! Ppl be like "they just grow slower in low light" meanwhile I've had mine either in the window (spring and summer) or directly under a grow light and this is all I've got! Like how much slower we talking if this is the sped up version? My snake plant, is under the exact grow light in the exact spot and it's pushing out all sorts of growth and it's longest leaf went from 21cm to 23cm in the last month (that's almost an inch)... I need the zz gods...
I propagate a few from leaves and it took about 4 months to root and another 3 months to make a bulb. It's still sitting in my kitchen window in water. I'll do a video of it sometime next week. Have a great day and happy house planting. 🌱🌿😊🤗😘
Dude seriously though😭 I got a cutting from my cousin and it FINALLY grew roots. I potted it up about 6 months ago now and haven’t seen any new growth😂 These suckers really do like to take their time
If I can’t chop it and shove it right back in the soil I don’t try to propagate it lol. It’s taken me over a year but I’ve turned my one lil micans into a GIANT hanging plants by just pruning off the vines that are too long and proping them back in the pot
I tried to save my dying and rotting zz which i got from Amazon. Even tho sadly most of it died but the main trunk with the biggest potat is doing really well and I've chopped two smol zz from that plant and the cuttings took almost 4-5 months to form some roots. I didn't know what water propagation was so i directly placed the cuttings in the soil just next to my big trunk zz and now I've got 3 zz. One big trunk zz and two smol babey zz ❤️🥺
I forgot about a ZZ prop my friend gave me its been like nearly two years and the pot is sprouting random babies now! I guess they tried to propagate a few different ways in the pot and i didn't know about.😅 They take FOREVER to grow
I've not yet stepped into ZZ plants yet, but I know they're trendy. I'm more of a succulent girl. I have 2 plants a pepperonia & parler palm & snake plant, but i think they'resucculents. Are ZZ plants easy or a pain?
I propagated mine directly into soil and it was rooted within a couple of weeks. I don't even think I could rooting hormone on it. It was a raven zz, but the dwarf green zz, it was a completely different story. 🤣🤣
I bought a raven zz 2 years ago. I broke it down and reported it into 5 different plants and it won't stop making new babies!! I have so much new growth all the time
hi! I tried propagating leaves and stems in little shot glasses with no luck.. I change the water once a week but i’ve noticed they start to go black and soggy on the bottom. The stems fold over and the leaves just turn really dark. Should i just leave them in there or is it pointless?
I accidentally broke a stem when I repotted my big zz over the winter. I ended up putting it in a jar with perlite and water. I put a ziploc bag over it, put it under the grow lights and forgot about it for a few months. I "found" it and it in the pot with the rest of the zz plants. I was successful with only an inch of roots. I did pretty much the same thing with my emerald star snake plant. That one I actually lost among my regular plants. It not only grew a few inches of roots, it also produced a tiny pup. Everything is under grow lights.
I felt like this about my monstera but then i had to unexpectedly chop a big portion. The 2 clippings i had before that refuuuuse to grow, but the surprise clipping and the mother plant were like, excited and rooted immediately
I put it in a black plastic bottle, with water. I didn't change the water. The ZZ plant I putted in was an overwatered stem. It was because of the rain. After 1 month or more, it rooted
Mines probably around 2 months and its longer than that. I think it started growing roots after i stopped checking it everyday jk 😂😂 i put it in water then transferred to perlite
I saw a video that showed that Pothos cuttings can help other plants root faster. I also watched videos that made me hesitate on trying to propagate my ZZ plant because of how long it takes. Now I wonder whether I should dare to experiment...
Would it help to put root hormone everytime u change water? Or is it only helpful the first weeks? Don’t want to waste my root dust but very tempted to try
In my heart I cannot buy a 5 gallon pot of 3 pieces of zz plant for $40, everytime i see one i wish i could get them but im so cheap id rather take pieces off the floor and hope they dont rot when i propogate 😢😂
This is good to know. I had a baby leaf stem I accidentally snipped while pruning away some dead and I plopped it in some water to test. I'll keep changing out the water in that propagation and let it hang on now that I know it can take forever. Lol!
Mine started growing roots the next day but they are baby roots. I don’t care how long it takes my ZZ plant I’m propagating it from is GORGEOUS so I can be patient 😂 what I did was add plant food to the water to help it grow
@@Stoneheadass honestly I just stick my propagations into soil and if they don't keel over completely I call it a new plant and wait a month or two before checking for roots. That being said I've never had a zz plant and I live in a hot & humid climate so it's all a matter of factors.
I trimmed so many stems and leaves of my plant and by now after 2 months there are a handful that rooted but the majority are unchanged. I'm still happy with what I have though.
If I have one that’s stubborn on rooting I’ll put a pothos cutting in with it. I had a coleus that I was certain would do nothing, put a pothos cutting in the water and had 1/4” roots the next morning!
