Surprisingly, I had 12 shoots in 3 weeks. I decided to blend some crushed eggs shells in the the blender. It became sandy, I mixed it with the soil, and since then the plant grows exponentially. I even think its over growing. It gets enough light outdoors, and I water once a week in West Africa.

@@lakeiaburgess2902 I just put back the eggshells back to the tray and place tray in the window when gets sun so they will get dry. When already full and dried, I use blender to crush them until became powder. I placed on top of my zz plant's soil/pot since I purchased last month, I got 2 shoots now I am surprised, maybe it is spring time too down here, but I think it has a lot of nutrients and good source of calcium, my African blue basil usually I can just cut easily the stems by hand, now I need scissors hehe

It survived 40c temperatures without water and was still looking good. When I finally remembered it I decided that anything that can survive that treatment deserves to be repotted and brought indoors.

Sooooo. I overwatered and the leaves on one stem turned yellow. I removed it from the pot and cut off the root rot. The stem isn’t mushy. So do I cut it off or leave it there? Should I cut off the yellow leaves.? No one on YT that I can find says what to do with the stem. I don’t think leaves will grow back so I’m guessing the stem should be cut down to the soil even though it is firm. Is that correct? Thanks

Aloha Nicole! Thanks so much for this video. I have two ZZ plants, one is a Raven. However, while they look really healthy, neither is putting out new shoots like yours.(I've had both since May). I recently bought one for my daughter, we replanted it a couple of months ago and it's growing like crazy. I think mine are both getting enough light, are planted in a nice rich soil, but no new shoots. I have been assessing their light situation and maybe they're getting as much as I should give them, though it has been "taught" that they do well in low light situations. Suggestions, especially now that we're heading into fall/winter? Thanks!

My plant was outside in a very sunny spot, and I watered it almost every single day at that time because the soil was drying out so quickly on the daily… The front of my apartment is south facing, and it just gets beat up by the sun… I had to tuck the zz plant in the corner so it would limit the number of hours of sun and I also make sure to rotate it so one side wasn’t getting all of the attention! I did learn about this adjustment the hard way because I did get a few burn leaves unfortunately.

Usually in one pot there are several rhizomes- making several plants. To buy a large potted Zanzibar Gem is very expensive, and I discovered it was cheaper to buy a few smaller plants and pot them all together in one pot. I gently separated all the rhizome clumps from my small pots, and used potting mix with lots of perlite added. The perlite improves drainage. If you have a tendency of over-watering, I suggest when you pot up your Zanzibar Gem, to add perlite to the potting mix. These plants definitely put out more shoots when living in bright light. I also mist my plants, and in that add a tiny amount of liquid fertiliser.

I actually just did the same! And I did report it into a smaller pot and it seems to be doing well now even though it's not growing season. I figured the risk of repotting it was worth it because it looks like it was going to die anyway. I would rather at least try and save it than just let it go due to root rot from being in a pot that is too big. This was a raven ZZ plant that I did this with. I hope that helps. Good luck!

I got two ravens zz from Whole Foods too this summer (thanks to you and your YT channel!) And both got those yellow spots like yours, one was way worse than the other. I treated them both with neem oil, like they had a fungus, and both now look healthy like your healthy one. I'm inclined to think that the spots were a sign of a fungal issue or that the cold damage made them more susceptible to fungal infections.

I thought it might be fungus too but I reached out to costa farms anyways. I got a raven ZZ for my friend from Whole Foods too and hers also got so many yellow spots and most leaves have fall off. :(

@@SunnySideUpwithNicole how about a video on rehabilitating a cold damaged ZZ plant? I would be interested.

Since neem was effective it could be bugs of some sort. Mites often cause that damage and loss of leaves.

Thank you for your very informative video. I wish my zz looked like yours. Mine does not have shiny leaves . Very dull and very little growth. I split it about a year ago. Put the smaller one outside during summer. It has sprouted some new growth and the new growth is shiny. I will take advantage of your tips and hopefully my zz will look like yours one day.

Hi Nicole. Thank you for the video. It's very helpful. I would love to watch more similar videos on your RUclips channel. If possible I would like to request video about monstera deliciosa. Stay safe Nicole and I can't wait to see you in your next video.

Thank you Anna! I don’t think I will do a video on monstera deliciosa because I just gave mine away a month ago. 😣 It grew too fast and I have no room for it. In short, they love bright indirect sunlight. Water them when the soil is bone dry. And make sure you give it a moss pole when they are small.

Hello Nicole. I got inspired by your video and decided to purchase a ZZ plant 🪴 from my local department store in Sydney. The tag said thrives on neglect - do not water!! One stem snapped off after a few days. I placed the cutting in a cup of 🚰 water and experimented in propagation. I changed water 1-2 weekly and it’s been 2 months now. It has grown a lot of roots. I will plant it up into a pot with Cacti & 🌵 succulent mix. Or should I replant in the original pot?? 🤔 Warm regards Stephen.

everyone on the tube just says how indestructible this plant is and how infrequently you should water it. it’s great to have your info on complete plant care. i am very successful with plants that communicate, but ZZ is new to me and it keeps its counsel. thanks for filling in some gaps!!

    Hello Nicole,
RE: Green ZZ Plant from Ikea
I got this ZZ plant about 3 months ago.
I kept it indoor away from window.
The plant got no direct sunlight except from the grow light.
The tip of leafs have turned yellow.
I have re-potted it to terra cotta pot.
The plant got smaller than the original one. I have used the Miracle-Gro cactus with perlite.
I just wonder why the tip of leafs turned yellow.
The temperature was around 75 degree Fahrenheit.
RE: ZZ Ravens Plant from Lowes
I also have re-potted it and I placed this plant next to the green ZZ plant.
Both got same treatment but the Ravens is growing with no problem.
BTW - thank you for your information.
Have a Happy New Year 2021.

I put my ZZ plant outside for 2 weeks in the summer. I had transplanted just before putting it outside. I noticed it wasn't doing well so brought it back inside. The leaves had all went droopy and the stems were mushy and brown.
I cut it back and am letting it dry out. Do you think it will come back?

Why would my zz plant’s new growth shoots dry out? This spring there were four new shoots. The first grew and opened, however the rest eventually just dried out. 😞
