Synthetic Bonfire ... IN STEREO! Fantastic. This is some seriously impressive work, the amount Arbhar can do really has gone crazy. It'll sound overly gushy but thanks for making such a capable, powerful, inspiring tool.
I just want to tell you at Instruō how much I appreciate all the content you make available in terms of online tutorial/info content. Having videos like this truly sets you apart from most of the other eurorack brands (as far as I know). It's incredibly valuable having content with this amount of detail and depth available for those of us that would otherwise miss out on so much of what these things can do. Thank you so much!
@@instruo While I agree with everything they just said, I'll add to it. Thank you for the VCV Rack ports. Being introduced to most of your modules through Omri Cohen's patching videos really got the hooks in me! Not just for your modules, but for using modular synths in the first place!
I think I paid more attention to this video then I've ever paid to school, my job, family.... but those things are fleeting. Looping granular audio is forever (forever, for, eve, er, for, er, rev)
Put on the video. Got about halfway through. Put my coat on and walked down to my local synth shop. Bought Arbhar (now helpfully shipping preloaded with V2.0).. Returned home. Resuming watching video and now at the end of "Preset 1."
Wow! Christmas came early this year! Between this and the Lubadh update, Instruo went from #1 module manufacturer to… what’s above #1? lol. Seriously though, anyone considering their modules for the first time, just buy them, they are infinitely inspiring. Jason, please thank the whole team for all of this work. (P.S. I still wish someone would write a Scion 2.0. The most beautiful module ever made and I wish it did more.)
I have the Arbhar with V2. It’s a good module and u get really interesting and musical results. But… it’s deep and u need a 3hour video / instruction manual indexed appropriately on hand to get the best from it. Guess what ? Here’s the very thing !!! A brilliant video and what made be decide to buy. Cheers Jason 👍
I've tried granular modules several times, and I sold them all. I had the feeling that granular was not for me. But not this time! This arbhar module is very spontaneous to play without any shortcuts and menu diving which are very difficult to remember when we play live and have a lot of other concentration. This module really has a definition: just play and have fun! thanks Instruo!
Yes! Upgraded to V2 on my break, watching this while manning the front desk at work and just drooling. I always sample my mate's voice messages into Arbhar for content and now I can fill 42 scenes with his voice :P
god please tell me where you learned how to do this? I have scanned back and forth on this video and must be an idiot-can't find it. I'm guess I'm looking for "dump your samples here, and they will show up here"
Wow! What an incredible module. To be honest, I started watching the video having zero idea of what the Arbhar did and was blown away just by the first example and explanation of the UI. What an audio treat of a module and a way of exploring sound that I hadn’t thought of before. This method of implementation the way the grains are enveloped is incredible. I’ll put this on the list of modules I’ll get if money falls from the sky of which there are many but goodness, so well thought out! Excellent explanation as well. Guess I’ll keep watching in a few chunks.
Guys, I made it to the granular delay patch and I'm ecstatic right now. I really think that Arbhar could be an autonomous instrument for a performance as a desktop device. With bigger knobs and modulation possibilities and the reverb & delay fx both available any time. I mean this has become a next level granular performance engine.
This must have been the quickest I have ever spent £99.00!! - looking forward to recieving my expansion / upgrade pack, a very impressive update to an outstanding module, well done guys!!
Incredible work! You can really tell that a lot of thought went into this update, both in terms of added features and improving of the existing ones. Although you guys gave me a very thorough presentation of the new firmware in Superbooth, seeing this video with all the features explained one by one surprised me both in terms of quantity but most importantly in quality. Thank you so much, keep up the good work ! :)
This video was super helpful. Thank you. I spend several days going through it, repeating parts and emulating Jason. It's one thing to watch it, but it's another thing to do it. :)
One of the major update on the Arbhar is the reduction size of the grains witch make a huge difference when it comes to play very small grains (V1:40 ms and V2:5 ms). So now instead of having on the V1 the wavetable stage coming, you can still play with the V2 very sharp grains. Really great job guyzz
This is astonishing! I've been eyeing one of these blighters for a while now to compliment my Lúbadh... I really need one of these in my life NOW!!! KIDNEY FOR SALE!
Holy guacamole, i do not even own this module (so far), but seeing all those improvements and additions is more then just a firmware update... it's a devine transformation. I am very impressed.
Thank you Jason, love your work, just ordered Arbhar, grealy looking forward to working with it. Just wanted to shout out to Émilie Gillet for first establishing the concept on attenurandomizer in her unit. Seeing that there seemed to some question as to where the concept came from.😉
Thank you!! Yep you’re quite right :) Was Beads the first to explicitly coin the term attenurandomiser? If so, I’m proud to say I am fully adopting the term! But with that, we might be able to claim that the arbhar’s attenurandomiser predated the term!! 😂
Really appreciate Instruo making this a firmware update and adding the optional usb expander (bought it yesterday) rather than going the 2.0 hardware route!
Thanks so much! One clarification: there isn’t actually a hardware 2.0 All Arbhar are the same :) The firmware update is V2.0 and new production stock ships with it preinstalled. Upgrading an Arbhar to V2.0 with either a manual update or with the preflashed SD card provided with the expansion update pack will result in the same. Any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the support team 😊
@@Ellende aha!!! I read you now! Sorry, morning coffee was yet to be consumed! 😂 Yes! That’s definitely something we prioritised :) The hardware still had/has so much capability under the hood. Optimising for it is very much a long term endeavour. Thank you so much for your support!
Mine arrives tomorrow finally. Ever wonder how many customers are actually nerdy enough to fully appreciate the gory details? ;-) Eventually I'l get around to returning my damaged CNOC to get repaired. So... if the Tangerine Dream founders were barely teenagers now, what would their creative trajectory be like today? (thought experiment). So taking calcium supplements so your nails provide better sound design? 😂
Really enjoying the accumulative recording mode. I used to do this a lot with the Line 6 DL4 in my first band as a teenager. Creating small glitches, feedback, notes, arps etc I guess it was kinda granular in a way and I definitely didn't understand what granular synthesis was. Excited to explore this with the arbhar, it opens up a whole new world of textures.
I'd been having a few issues replicating the some of the button combos, thinking my Arbhar might have a fault. Have just read the manual and realised that, for example, switching in and out of the Load/Save menu requires that Shift/Capture/Strike be pressed IN THAT ORDER. I was pressing the first two simultaneously followed by Strike, and wondering why it wasn't working. The importance of RTFM! 🙃
Thanks mate. I still struggle to understand presets vs layers vs scenes. I get what each respective one is, I am still having issue figuring out the hierarchy and the connection between the three. I don't think I am alone with this so short video would really help. Cheers for this massive one.
@@earlsfield in a nutshell: • Presets are configurations of the parameters/control configurations. • Layers are the audio buffers α/β/γ/δ/ε/ζ • Scenes are a combination of the two. A scene can load audio into all layers at once and a preset. Good way to think of it is like a way to recall audio and behaviour that might pertain to a particular song/patch/performance. My video is a big one 😂 The manual is extensive also. But beyond that we do have a full time support team who are there to advise and answer any questions :) We all patch and make music as well and design modules that do the things we want. So beyond technical support, we’re here to advise on patching and the creative side of things too.
@@instruo Cheers mate, your video is amazing, I watch your videos a lot, have quite a few Instruo modules and your tutorials are amazing and in depth. I was just trying to get a grasp of the hierarchy and what is detached :) I do have a question though, although I might direct that to your team - can you time warp samples here, flex in a way? Follow mode seems like that. Is there a way to clock follow mode so the playback speed would fit the clock? Or is this more of Lubadh ground?
@@earlsfield thanks so much! ☺️ Each individual grain is varispeed (slower-lower/faster-higher). But because the playback is granular it offers the unique character and capabilities of elongation through granular synthesis. The Lubadh is more macro. It’s an emulation of traditional audio looking mechanics. Both modules are essentially audio processing platforms. Lubadh can be configured into pretty much any type of delay effect configuration. Arbhar is an absolute beast! Collaborating with Sebastian for many years now has been an incredible experience. The granular engine in the Arbhar predates its hardware iteration by about 15 years! The Lexer method has been in use and development and refinement through Seb’s career! It’s such a powerful and versatile module. Especially with V2. …and there is so much more to come!
@@instruo feel like both compliment each other, I have lots of delays in modular and standalone form, so I went for Arbh because deffo feels like most powerful granular module out there (and I have went through Cloudsmania :)) layers, modes, even wavetable, now with fw 2 its even more interesting, mainly because I can plug poly synths and create havoc. Used Morphagene for that but Arbhar with layers is way more down what I wanna do. Lubadh - i love tape and tape delays, worked with tape for a long time. Still some nifty stuff in there might pick that one up too! Beebop was working on 1u tape I gotta check with him if its finished lol keep rocking you guys!
Hi Instruo lovelies. Any chance we're gunna get those lovely samples that came with the V2 for download. Like the sample library that was made available for the Lunbadh v2.0. Plz.
It’s on the todo list! There is a very detailed video resource nearing completion on all things sample management which Sebastian has been working on. It’s going to be a huge resource!
Now this I didn't expect. The Arbhar is my favorite module as it is. A couple of things here that are a little unclear-- is the USB stick expander included in the expansion kit, or is it separate? And it sounds like the new sample library will be included in the expansion, though for a limited time. Any idea when the expansion kit will be available? (I'm not seeing it on the website so far)...
New production stock Arbhar and the upgrade expansion packs are in stores and available now :) The new production stock ships with the CV and USB expanders. The upgrade expansion packs are a limited run, but are entirely optional purchases. The firmware is available to download from the Support page for free. The USB breakout is simply convenience. The sample library is a short term exclusive with the expansion pack, but will eventually be published online for download. Hope this helps! Thanks ☺️
This is brilliant Jason. Track and hold is such an amazing upgrade. A couple of questions. Does the switch on the back get disabled with 2.0 Also in Follow Mode preset are we able to use reverb?
Thank you!! ☺️ Do you mean the X/Y A/B switches? They’re now redundant. Reverb is global and can be used with any configuration! It does require the MOD CV though
What an awesome module, think I need this to go with Cs-L. Excuse my lack of knowledge , I have 2 VinCA's , when you were in Delay mode, you can send cv with nothing in input? love the Bonfire and whistling.
That’s correct :) Both channels can generate manually controlled bias CV. The top channel is bipolar and the bottom is unipolar positive for their DC offsets. In this video I had the vinca set to series meaning my bipolar dc offset was normalled to the bottom VCA which could attenuate the signal. Scale and offset controls combined :)
Seems a good update. Please consider releasing a USB drive expander that has two ports on it, for those of us who also own Lubadh. My case is full :-) Thanks.
It’s something I’ve considered. Comes down to a matter of logistics. I don’t know metrics of how many Arbhar and Lubadh users there are out there. Developing a second version of the expander hardware would take some time and I don’t know how many I would need to produce. It’s not out of the question though. The more feedback I get from users the better for determining viability.
@@instruo Just to say upgrade was easy and scenes are a great addition. Excellent improvement all round. Looking forward to exploring more of it. Keep doing what you do please!
Hmmm having problems with the Granular delay patch. For some reason, unlike Jason, when I patch the trigger out into the capture input and already have capture active like he does, the trigger is resetting the playhead as well as the record head (it basically goes back to blipping on and off with the trigger, whereas capture remains active with his). Am I doing something wrong? Am I missing something?
It's been a minute since I patched this 😅 If you send the support team an enquiry they'll be able to track down any quirks going on. You can open a support ticket through the contact form on the website, or email direct at info@instruomodular.com
@@instruo Thanks for coming back so quickly. I actually did a factory reset and now it's working as in the video. Assuming something on my preset 4 was not quite right. but thanks for the quick response :)
That’s correct :) The were an extra in the beginning that we found a use for. With V2 we have a much better interface implemented. Not more un-racking to change mode!!
Love Arbhar 2.0! Tried to use it as a dual-mono setup to further process each channel („L“ / „R“), but with the default coin toss output distribution it can‘t be done… Is there a solution for a dual mono configuration? Cheers!
There sure is! The “stereo” preset utilises the MOD CV input for panning control. It’s an aspect that we’ve realised needs clearer documentation. So that is something that is in the works. Page 14 of the recent sample management document we published goes into some detail of the MOD parameters. www.instruomodular.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/arbhar-V2-Sample-Pack-Managment.pdf If you need anything clarified, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the support team at info@instruomodular.com The V2 engine is extremely deep and there’s a good chance there are buried parameters that can be adapted to best suit your needs. :)
jason if i hold shirft, strike and push the strike 8 times as you showed it 15:10 to get to a factory reset. the module is freezes. also the colors on my visual is not same like yours. i updated the arbahr v2 via blanEtcher and also got a validating feedback. how can i recognize it on the module if i updated the firmware corectly?? much love and support from munich
Factory reset will hard reset the processor. The display will lock at what ever it was at. My firmware update tutorial video shows how to differentiate between versions. In brief, V1 has 4 onset modes, V2 has 6. These are displayed via shift+capture
Thank you so much for this update Jason! Arbhar is one of my favorite granular modules ever and I didn't think it could get better until now! One issue though.. I updated to V2 today and now the pitch of the captured audio is slightly sharper than the source material upon playback with the pitch knob being dead center and no deviation is active? Does it need to be calibrated after updating?
Thank you so much! The calibration data is stored on the hardware itself and relays it onto the firmware. It’s possible the calibration values were close enough (for jazz) for the V1 but inaccuracies are more noticeable on the V2 engine. Please send us an email through the website when you have a moment and the support crew will be able to advise. Our inbox is a little busy at the moment but you should get some word back tomorrow. I’ll give folks a heads up in the morning to look out for a question of this nature :) Cheers!
@instruo Can you please expedite the upload of the samples to your website. I've tried everything I can to follow this to load my samples into the Arbhar but am at a complete loss. Following the video doesn't help. If I had a reference folder structure to experiment with I could probably figure it out. I do all my, er, 'Arbharing' (I'm sorry, I made it a verb) from samples.
I love “Arbharing” a verb! I have a fully dedicated video on scenes and sample management in the works. It would have pushed this video well past it’s already silly length! In short, I’m the scenes menu, page two loads scenes. The first 6 slots (white) are the on board factory presets. The next 36 (yellow and white indicators) select the scenes folders on the USB. Double tapping shift on these will load the first 6 samples alphabetically to the layers. Dedicated video coming soon!
@@instruo I actually figured it out. I had created files in the folders as a sort of hybrid structure, placing six (like the older firmware would expect) files per folder instead of one per folder. Having spent a year or two doing it this way my brain couldn't make the switch. "It would have pushed this video well past it’s already silly length!" You could do two more, then you'd match the length of LORD OF THE RINGS!
Will the USB breakout 'module' be available separately? I have my Arbhars running on V2 and I am now borrowing my Lubadh 2.0 USB.... Edit: I am SO happy with V2.
Expansion packs are available for Arbhar in the exact same way as they are/were for the Lubadh. They are entirely option extras. Simply a convenience feature. They just make the usb ports longer :)
I'd wish the new expansion module would have at least one (MOD) input jack besides the USB. It's the only thing I use from the other expansion. Maybe it's hackable to add one.
I had to very much go with efficiency of design. The USB expander is simply a port extension mounted (sturdily) to 2HP. The front USB access is mainly a convenience factor. The arbhar actually originally didn't even utilise the USB port at all! First protoypes didn't even have a port on the PCB! Adding it was for use as a hardware development utility. It was very late stage development where we realised it was actually feasible to utilise it as external memory. The downside being the bandwidth limitation and slow read/write speeds of generic USB devices. There is no active circuitry on the USB expanders (which were developed to function with both Lubadh and Arbhar in similar ways). The arbhar hardware unfortunately also had no remaining ADC channels for external inputs. Including extra CV inputs with the USB is an impossibility because of this. The arbhar's existing hardware was a core challenge to developing the V2 firmware! But I was very sure that any limitations in hardware interface and requirement for a new menu and button combos etc, was a much better path than developing a whole new V2 module! Doing that would have split our resources to best support an old version while actively trying to sell as many new versions as possible. (The modern smart phone model!) I hope this makes sense! But also I want to be clear that your suggestion is a good and valid one! The arbhar would certainly benefit from some extra I/O ;) We are still very very early days with V2 and many things are possible!
@@instruothank you for your comprehensive answer. I understand adding new 'active' CV inputs would need larger hardware changes with all new challenges. What I actually meant was to have one or two jack inputs next to the USB, just like on the included expansion, which you could connect to the original expander header on the Arbhar itself. Because the MOD input is the only input I use on the original expander (and I think many of us do), one could have the new expander replace the original one, having easy USB access together with one or two external inputs of the original expander. It still would be a passive expander. If there is space in the back of the new expander, it would be an easy DIY to add a jack socket (or two).
Typical, I have one of the early models of Arbhar 026 affected by the stereo input gain problems 😢.have to roll back until there is a fix, and I hope there will be a fix having purchased the new USB expander.
Fix is very close! We only learned of the issue the day after launching so we’ve had high priority focussed on figuring out what’s going on. Simple calibration value which doesn’t seem to translate over on certain v1.5 production units. If you send us an email at info@instruomodular.com we’ll be in touch with the patch as soon as we have it :)
@@ape-tac-tics The emulation on the ONSET input matched the behaviour of the main input. Sebastian nailed it! really well matched :) The ENHANCE channel on the Larachd module is designed to replace the emulation for providing a matched analogue signal path between both. That was part of the original plan for adding stereo and the emulation was a bit of a stretch goal, but it's so good we were completely happy going with it out the box!
@@ape-tac-tics that’s exactly how I designed it ;) For this the ONSET channel input emulation should be disabled in a preset.txt setting to make use of the ENHANCE as a parallel to the arbhar’s primary input.
@@instruo I was trying to download the batch of manuals from the support section, instead of the manual from the individual modules page. I did this because I was already in that section getting the update. Sorted now.
You have one of a small batch of “dark mode” Mid COVID/supply shortage, the LED part was discontinued and no alts were available. I chose to continue production with them omitted. The back lighting was always a bit of a gimmick feature I liked doing! But it’s completely hidden when patched 😂 So I made the decision to keep production going. So yeh! Limited edition special batch ;)
Hi, new to arbhar. Have an issue with arbhar recording is much lower pitch than the recorded pitch. Any idea what I messed up? Pitch knob and random pitch knob are centred..? Cheers!!

Here is a full list of official retailers: www.instruomodular.com/dealers/ I know for sure they are in stock at SignalSounds who ship world wide :) www.signalsounds.com/instruo-arbhar-v2-0-expansion-pack-module-sd-card-usb-drive
Hey Jason. If I'm in Mode 1 and activate follow mode and then Zeta (end of cycle trigger) would that be exactly the same as being in Mode 4 but with MovCV mapped to reverb? Just trying to wrap my head around the new modes.
Well unfortunately I think the Capture Mode would also be different. In Mode 4 the Capture Mode is Retrigger right? That means that without changing the Capture Mode in the USB text file I can’t use that ring buffer technique with reverb. Also, I just wanted to check with you that using the follow mode in reverse (left side of the scan knob) seems to stop the retriggering behaviour?
@@lifeformmusic3301 there are a lot of parameter configurations on the Arbhar. The 6 factory presets are simply a starting point! The Scenes mechanic is designed in a way to be extremely open ended. If you need any advice our support crew will be more than happy to help :) info@instruomodular.com
I must be an idiot---but I just can't find how to load samples from the USB card? This the main reason I got the 2HP USB expander. I checked all the chapter markers, and scanned through 3 hrs here and can't find it. Anyone?

@@instruo not to be snarky here---I LOVE Arbhar and have owned it since it first came out. Your innovations are truly unique and appreciated. However---Many people here could benefit from an answer and would save you (and us) from the same tech support question over email. I am assuming that many of us interested in showing up with samples of our own, and simply want to toss them on the card and jam with them. Is this really not explained in this 3+ hr video,. or can't be simply explained here? I downloaded the 27page "how to load samples into arbhar" and can't find it clearly explained there either.
@@JohnoWells not to be snarky here either!.. but I’m just trying to help! 😬 It’s late here, I caught your comment and typed up a quick message pointing you in the direction of where you’ll get a precise answer. Are you looking to load a single sample to a layer? Or are you loading a full scene to replace audio in all 6 buffers at once? Either of these can be achieved but have different mechanics to them as well as additional considerations that might be made ahead of time when curating your audio content. Connect your USB drive and enter the clone/load/save menu. Shift+capture+strike. The colours will change and you will see three white lights across the display. These three lights indicate the menu pages for: • Cloning or loading single samples • Loading scenes • Saving scenes. Pages are changed with capture and strike. The current page will have its own colour scheme and will have its page indicator pulsing. (Press the same button combo to exit if you change your mind) Here it’ll be easier for me to directly you to the sample pack management manual at this stage. Which I believe you to have downloaded already. Pages 22/23 explain the steps how to load individual samples to a layer. Pages 24/25 explain how to load a scene which will fill all 6 layers at once. Scenes are more complicated as there is also the option of loading a “preset” file which can be curated with particular sets of samples. This can quickly load variations of parameter configurations. This is what we call scenes. Loading scenes is extremely powerful and can be used to pull up entire performance configurations of module behaviours and sound sources at once. I’d highly recommend reading through the manual. If anything is at all unclear, I have a full time support crew who are here to help get people up and running with their modules. We’re a team of musicians as well. So if there are any question beyond just the tech and mechanics, we’re more than happy to help creatively and try to provide solutions to creative problem solving. I hope this helps as a starting point for you.
@@instruo WOW... Thank you *so much* for the time you took to write all this. I'm positive it will help many. First, I ASSumed incorrectly it would be simpler. ie: drag samples into a single folder and they would magically appear on layers 1-6, ready to use. No creating scenes, watching colors change, learning key combos, or finding the interest or time in learning the complex situations you've explained. Not complex to the engineer who coded it, but a little dense for the musician who purchased your instrument. I'm positive all the upgrades are wonderful, but from a non-engineer perspective, sometimes easier is the way to go. I know from speaking with many friends over the years about Arbhar that #1 easy loading of samples was a big one, and #2: true stereo inputs. But I also understand (from the manufacturer side) the delicate balance of over-engineering a module to "do it all" vs. the "one knob-per-function", which obviously something deep and magical like Arbhar (or Morphagene, for that matter) could never be. Someday I might find the time and interest to learn the key combos and new upgrades, but honestly, I was just hoping to purchase the $110 2HP USB add-on to load up my Arbhar with cool samples and get to work. Again, thank you for your candor and time to write this out for everyone. Much respect.
Also see pages 52 and 53 in the manual. www.instruomodular.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Arbhar-Manual-Firmware-2.0-A5.pdf Loading scenes is loading presets. The first 6 scene (only 6 scenes, if no USB drive is present) indicators are the factory default presets.
@@instruo Thank you so much for this quick response and clarification. "Loading scenes is loading presets." I thought of scenes as a group of parameter settings.
@@ethermod307 is a preset not just “a group of parameter settings”? 😉 The Arbhar is deep! The confusion definitely comes when a scene can be either a “preset”, a collection of samples for layers, or both… (Or neither technically). This is very much just the beginning :) It’s perhaps a bit obtuse a process in its current form, but please trust that it is so with good reason. We have big plans which this format will allow us to build upon.
@@instruo Arbhar is definitely deep. It's one of the very few instruments that I feel the creative need to dive in. One of the most important factors for me is to be able to save and load "a collection of samples for layers", so a group of 6 samples simultaneously. Could that be saved/loaded as a preset as well if I understand well? I'm interested in recording 6 short samples straight into the Arbhar and into the layers, then store the layers into a preset that i can recall any time, without having to remove the USB stick. Is that possible with v2?
All info on how to update is here: ruclips.net/video/wO4jlw4fYak/видео.html Expansion packs are an entirely optional but convenient way to do it, and they come with the sample library as a short term exclusive :)
Oh some parts reminded me of his soundtrack to "The Thing" from John Carpenter where he used very minimalistic sythesizer hooks and lines.@@stephanrewind As you might know, he did not do only soundtracks for his most known Western Movie Scores with Sergio Leone, he also was a avantgarde musician and was strongly influenced from electroacoustic composers like Karlheinz Stockhausen and Pierre Boulez who used "controlled randomnes" in their works.
Just a personal suggestion from an owner of this module, choose what features to keep and what to leave out, make it simpler and more user friendly. It's a nightmare to remember every button combination to access menus and submenus and all the stuff around there. The phase switch button combination is hilarious, I mean we don't have just arbhar in our racks, if all modules would be like that eurorack would be impossible to use. I like the module though, it's just too much and most of the features are useless in my opinion.
I definitely changed my perception of the Arbhar when changing to the V2.0 firmware. I describe it more as a platform now than being a single focussed module. The granular engine is a bit like an operating system where it can be fine tuned and tailored to very optimised use cases. It really is part of the fun of modular I think. The majority of my designs are more traditional analogue module designs that can combine to a much more traditional synth. But then adding in the deeper platform modules like arbhar and lubadh bring a deeper level of complexity! It's largely why I end up doing such long videos. Because I try to showcase a wide range of use cases.
@@instruo past a certain level of depth and complexity (pages, menus, submenus, etc.) you should put a screen on the module or create an editor app. Humans are not meant to remember all the buttons combinations, colors, and weird stuff this firmware includes. Most of us just wanna make music without re-watching this video and reading the manual every time we wanna play with this module. It's just become a nightmare to operate it and that's why I'm selling it. I own roughly 30 modules and this is by far the trickiest one, sometimes less is more.
@@leonardocaminati6432 Sorry to hear that Leonard. To each their own 🙂 I'm not a screen fan personally so I don't design interfaces with them. The arbhar is deep! I absolutely agree that it takes an investment of time and practice to know it at a muscle memory level. (Much like learning guitar or piano) What I was describing was how I've grown to approach it personally, where I tailor a single focussed behaviour as a preset (which does take some manual revisits), but allows me to have it operate in a focussed and particularly optimised way for a system/patch/composition. Everyone works in different ways. I design my modules somewhat selfishly to suit how I patch. Thanks for trying it though! ☺ Happy patching!
I like intensity :) But thinking of it as intensity of voices totally works! Voices definitely makes sense when longer grain length and clocked sequencing is patched to play it more like a poly synth. But I feel “voices” might be slightly more misleading when in granular synthesis/time stretching contexts.
Synthetic Bonfire ... IN STEREO! Fantastic.
This is some seriously impressive work, the amount Arbhar can do really has gone crazy. It'll sound overly gushy but thanks for making such a capable, powerful, inspiring tool.
These guys really set the standard for video manuals. Would love to see more companies produce these guides.
Thank you so much ☺️
@@instruo While I agree with everything they just said, I'll add to it. Thank you for the VCV Rack ports. Being introduced to most of your modules through Omri Cohen's patching videos really got the hooks in me! Not just for your modules, but for using modular synths in the first place!
Had some issues with BalenaEtcher but Instruo support from Ben was fast and accurate. Thanks a lot. Arbhar V2.0.1 up and running!
I like the way you think 🪴
Agreed! I love my Scion but would really value even more options.
Oh wow! This is a whole feature film!
Arbhar 3.0 will require IMAX too 😁
If I need a VR headset to operate a synth, that's a step too far in my book.
I'm guess I'm looking for "dump your samples here, and they will show up here"
Loving the stereo mode. Offsetting the sense and input gains ( i.e not having them at 12 o'clock ) is giving me some really interesting effects.
Thank you so much!! ☺️
The output of this thing is unreal! 😍Keep up the good work! 🚀
Ok, I decided to get this module, wow, I’ve never heard anything so amazing in all my life, I’m blown away by the features and sound. Thank you
Oh the granulr supersaw is a King of it’s own 😮😮
Guys, I made it to the granular delay patch and I'm ecstatic right now. I really think that Arbhar could be an autonomous instrument for a performance as a desktop device. With bigger knobs and modulation possibilities and the reverb & delay fx both available any time. I mean this has become a next level granular performance engine.
What an awesome update. Cant wait to flash mine. Sebastian, grüße vom Bodensee!

Seeing that there seemed to some question as to where the concept came from.😉
Thank you!!
Yep you’re quite right :)
Was Beads the first to explicitly coin the term attenurandomiser?
If so, I’m proud to say I am fully adopting the term!
But with that, we might be able to claim that the arbhar’s attenurandomiser predated the term!! 😂
True that! Am loving the Arbhar, really expanded the sonic palette of my modular! 🙏
Amazing work, thank you
This video convinced me to buy the harmonàig. What a holy grail of a module!
Thank you Sebastian and Jason! This is amazing!
IN SANE ! Thanx for the video
For those not native speakers: Green = Grain ;) Very excited to go through this Jason, what an update. Thank you.
I cannot believe that it’s stereo, buying expander now. Thank you 🙏
OK ok.... just addid this lovely thing to my wishlist. Gotta honor that effort overall somehow for now.
Epic video for an epic update to an epic module ❤
Really appreciate Instruo making this a firmware update and adding the optional usb expander (bought it yesterday) rather than going the 2.0 hardware route!
Thanks so much!
One clarification: there isn’t actually a hardware 2.0
All Arbhar are the same :)
The firmware update is V2.0 and new production stock ships with it preinstalled.
Upgrading an Arbhar to V2.0 with either a manual update or with the preflashed SD card provided with the expansion update pack will result in the same.
Any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the support team 😊

My modular journey in a nutshell :)
amazing ! sweet lord of modular ! bravo to the whole team !
Thanks Max!!
f@ck, this is a fantastic module! I cant wait to start playing with it!
I'm very excited! Grabbing popcorn now :D
Incredibly impressive
I'd been having a few issues replicating the some of the button combos, thinking my Arbhar might have a fault. Have just read the manual and realised that, for example, switching in and out of the Load/Save menu requires that Shift/Capture/Strike be pressed IN THAT ORDER. I was pressing the first two simultaneously followed by Strike, and wondering why it wasn't working. The importance of RTFM! 🙃
Yeah!!! 🤩 Back in action with Arbhar 😃
Did not expect this! Can’t wait

Wow! What a KILLER update!
Thanks mate. I still struggle to understand presets vs layers vs scenes. I get what each respective one is, I am still having issue figuring out the hierarchy and the connection between the three. I don't think I am alone with this so short video would really help. Cheers for this massive one.
@@earlsfield in a nutshell:
• Presets are configurations of the parameters/control configurations.
• Layers are the audio buffers α/β/γ/δ/ε/ζ
• Scenes are a combination of the two. A scene can load audio into all layers at once and a preset.
Good way to think of it is like a way to recall audio and behaviour that might pertain to a particular song/patch/performance.
My video is a big one 😂
The manual is extensive also.
But beyond that we do have a full time support team who are there to advise and answer any questions :)
We all patch and make music as well and design modules that do the things we want.
Each individual grain is varispeed (slower-lower/faster-higher).

New production stock Arbhar and the upgrade expansion packs are in stores and available now :)
The new production stock ships with the CV and USB expanders.
Thank you!! ☺️
Do you mean the X/Y A/B switches?
They’re now redundant.
Reverb is global and can be used with any configuration! It does require the MOD CV though
@@instruo brilliant. Thank you so much. M
What an awesome module, think I need this to go with Cs-L. Excuse my lack of knowledge , I have 2 VinCA's , when you were in Delay mode, you can send cv with nothing in input? love the Bonfire and whistling.
That’s correct :)
Both channels can generate manually controlled bias CV.
It's been a minute since I patched this 😅

There sure is!
The “stereo” preset utilises the MOD CV input for panning control.

Factory reset will hard reset the processor. The display will lock at what ever it was at.
My firmware update tutorial video shows how to differentiate between versions.
In brief, V1 has 4 onset modes, V2 has 6. These are displayed via shift+capture
Have there been any revisions to the hardware through the course of its life?
Minor things here and there to help with production efficiencies. But that’s all :)
@@instruo Thanks, I thought as much.

And may I say - that's a gorgeous case! Who makes them?
Art for the ears :)
(The modern smart phone model!)
I hope this makes sense!
But also I want to be clear that your suggestion is a good and valid one! The arbhar would certainly benefit from some extra I/O ;)
We are still very very early days with V2 and many things are possible!
@@ape-tac-ticsjust seconding that i would love this if possible

@@ape-tac-tics The emulation on the ONSET input matched the behaviour of the main input. Sebastian nailed it! really well matched :)
The ENHANCE channel on the Larachd module is designed to replace the emulation for providing a matched analogue signal path between both.
That was part of the original plan for adding stereo and the emulation was a bit of a stretch goal, but it's so good we were completely happy going with it out the box!
@@ape-tac-tics that’s exactly how I designed it ;)
For this the ONSET channel input emulation should be disabled in a preset.txt setting to make use of the ENHANCE as a parallel to the arbhar’s primary input.

Almost.
The MOD CV definition in preset 4 controls HOLD which in that context will define loop length.
Brilliant. That's just fantastic. Thanksm

Is this really not explained in this 3+ hr video,. or can't be simply explained here?
I downloaded the 27page "how to load samples into arbhar" and can't find it clearly explained there either.
@@JohnoWells not to be snarky here either!.. but I’m just trying to help! 😬
It’s late here, I caught your comment and typed up a quick message pointing you in the direction of where you’ll get a precise answer.
These three lights indicate the menu pages for:
• Cloning or loading single samples
• Loading scenes
• Saving scenes.
Pages are changed with capture and strike. The current page will have its own colour scheme and will have its page indicator pulsing.
(Press the same button combo to exit if you change your mind)
Here it’ll be easier for me to directly you to the sample pack management manual at this stage.
@@JohnoWells all that info is in the manual 😉
With better formatting than a RUclips comment section as well!! 😂
Happy patching!
Anyone has realized HOW TO CHANGE PRESETS? Am I missing something?
2:07:16
“Changing presets” :)
I show the precise process at 02:12:10
Also see pages 52 and 53 in the manual.

Loading scenes is loading presets.
The Arbhar is deep! The confusion definitely comes when a scene can be either a “preset”, a collection of samples for layers, or both… (Or neither technically).
This is very much just the beginning :)
It’s perhaps a bit obtuse a process in its current form, but please trust that it is so with good reason.
Is that possible with v2?
howdy! are the expansion packs necessary to update arbhar?? where can we source them, r they going to retailers or thru the instruo website??
All info on how to update is here:
ruclips.net/video/wO4jlw4fYak/видео.html
Expansion packs are an entirely optional but convenient way to do it, and they come with the sample library as a short term exclusive :)
@@instruo thnx so much!! v eager to put the update to use. thnx to sebastian + the whole team, this is truly incredible work
Ennio Morricone would have loved this device.
Oh some parts reminded me of his soundtrack to "The Thing" from John Carpenter where he used very minimalistic sythesizer hooks and lines.@@stephanrewind
As you might know, he did not do only soundtracks for his most known Western Movie Scores with Sergio Leone, he also was a avantgarde musician and was strongly influenced from electroacoustic composers like Karlheinz Stockhausen and Pierre Boulez who used "controlled randomnes" in their works.
(Much like learning guitar or piano)
What I was describing was how I've grown to approach it personally, where I tailor a single focussed behaviour as a preset (which does take some manual revisits), but allows me to have it operate in a focussed and particularly optimised way for a system/patch/composition.
Everyone works in different ways. I design my modules somewhat selfishly to suit how I patch.
Thanks for trying it though! ☺
Happy patching!
Should be VOICES for number of Grains and not Intensity...
I like intensity :)
But thinking of it as intensity of voices totally works!
Voices definitely makes sense when longer grain length and clocked sequencing is patched to play it more like a poly synth.
But I feel “voices” might be slightly more misleading when in granular synthesis/time stretching contexts.
