St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is the oldest and most famous. It was opened in 1789, replacing the city's older St. Peter Cemetery (French: Cimetière St. Peter; no longer in existence) as the main burial ground when the city was redesigned after a fire in 1788.
It is 8 blocks from the Mississippi River, on the north side of Basin Street, one block beyond the inland border of the French Quarter. It borders the Iberville housing project. It has been in continuous use since its foundation. The nonprofit group Save Our Cemeteries and commercial businesses offer tours for a fee.
Famous New Orleanians buried in St. Louis No. 1 include Etienne de Boré, wealthy pioneer of the sugar industry and the first mayor of New Orleans; Homer Plessy, the plaintiff from the landmark 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court decision on civil rights. Ernest N. "Dutch" Morial, the first African-American mayor of New Orleans was interred there in 1989. Subsequently, Morial's family built a new family tomb at St. Louis Cemetery No. 3, and Morial's body was reinterred there in late 2014. Notable creole author and educator Alexander Dimitry is buried at Saint Louis Cemetery Number One. Most of the Dimitry family is interred there including; Andrea Dimitry and his wife Marianne Celeste Dragon. Marianne Céleste Dragon was the subject of a famous portrait painted by José Salazar.
The renowned Voodoo priestess Marie Laveau is believed to be interred in the Glapion family crypt. Other notable New Orleanians here include Bernard de Marigny, the French-Creole aristocrat and politician who founded both the Faubourg Marigny and Mandeville, Louisiana; Barthelemy Lafon, the architect and surveyor who allegedly became one of Jean Lafitte's pirates; and Paul Morphy, one of the earliest world champions of chess. Delphine LaLaurie, the notoriously cruel slave owner, is also believed to lie in rest here. Architect and engineer Benjamin Latrobe was buried at St. Louis No. 1 after dying from yellow fever in 1820, while doing engineering for the New Orleans water works. In 2010, actor Nicolas Cage purchased a pyramid-shaped tomb to be his future final resting place.
The cemetery spans just one square block but is the resting place of many thousands. A Protestant section (generally not vaulted) lies in the northwest section.
Effective March 1, 2015, the Roman Catholic Diocese of New Orleans, which owns and manages this cemetery, has closed it to the general public, ostensibly because of the rise in vandalism there. However, in a controversial move, the diocese is now charging tour companies for access ($4,500 per year, or lesser amounts for short periods). Families who own tombs can apply for a pass to visit.

My friend and I went to a cemetery at night that was way out in the middle of nowhere. You easily got the goose bumps getting closer to it. There were no other vehicles around. We both literally heard someone say, “Get outta here”. We never told anyone we were going there. It was spur of the moment. We looked all around and didn’t see anyone. Needless to say, we left in a hurry. It scared both of us.

Wow Scotty this is the first time I have seen a cemetery like this one. For me it was so bizarre. Looking at you going through all those crypts make me feel really claustrophobic. It felt really eerie as the tour never seemed to end. Not sure how you felt but I didn’t like that feeling. As for Nicholas Cage’s pyramid I am not surprised. I wouldn’t expect any different from him. He is a great actor. I loved watching the movie Face Off. Well once again superb job done by you with a lot of patience. I have said this to you many times and I have to say it again. Take care Scotty, Be safe. As always. Much love from us. ❤️🤗✌🏼💕

I have family in St. Louis #1, 2 and 3. Besides the tombs being desecrated there were statuary being stolen. Before Katrina the cemetery was surrounded by projects and the crime rate was horrible. People touring on their own were being robbed in there. All these reasons contributed to the fact that now you have to go in with a guide. Also all the markings on Laveau's tomb were getting out of hand. Fun fact, right next to Marie's crypt is the family tomb of Morial, former mayor of New orleans.

I learned something I wondered about for almost 25 years! I was in a New Orleans cemetery just like this near the French Quarter, and there was a tomb from the early 1800's that had a big crack in it. I looked in it and could see a whole skeleton. But, there was no skull and one arm bone was missing. I wondered "Did this person get decapitated and lose their arm? Why didn't they bury the head with them?". It never dawned on me that someone most likely stole the skull and the arm bone. Durr! Horrible thing to do. Super interesting tour/vlog.

Nice 'Nick Cage' impression, priceless. Wow Scott you hit pay-dirt in this video. Capturing the tour guides' narration complete with his personal thoughts and local experiences. The dude is a righteous 'rock and roller'. An absolute capitalist in the true sense. While his delivery, narration and questionable attire is speculate to his purpose, this video is a great 'inside job' of New Orleans history by you. Something the majority of your fans would never have experienced or known on their own.

Scott Wow this was incredible. I love Jeff's personality. He is very knowledgeable. I could have done without the peak inside the grave. I wasn't sure what we'd see. I learned alot.

Love this Reminds me of my Dad confused why people wanted to live below sea level We both visited at different times and loved it. I don’t remember the street but I remember he told me that looked at a certain street and you could see where a blockage of some kind was holding the water back. Such an awesome place. I hope the levee never breaks again. Really cool video thank you Scott
