Aileen Carol Wuornos was a serial killer who had killed seven men. She is widely believed to be the United States’ first female serial killer. She was convicted for six of the murders and sentenced to death. She was executed by lethal injection at the ‘Florida State Prison’ (FSP) on October 9, 2002. The product of a highly dysfunctional marriage, Aileen was subjected to horrific tortures as a young girl. Her father was a pedophile who was in jail at the time of her birth, while her mother was an immature teenager who abandoned Aileen and her brother. Brought up by her grandparents, Aileen became a victim of rampant childhood sexual abuse at the hands of her grandfather. Exposed to sexual activities at a tender age, she began providing sexual favors in exchange for food, drugs, and cigarettes when she was just 11 years old. She was raped and became pregnant when she was just 14-she claimed that her brother was the father of her child. Thrown out of her grandparents’ home as a teenager, she began eking out a living as a prostitute. She later started robbing and killing men, earning the notoriety of being the first female American serial killer. She hid out at the Fairview Motel in Port Orange, Florida and was arrested for the final time at the local bar , The Last Resort.
Im not justifying what this woman done what she did was wrong but she had the most horrendous childhood imaginable! She was let down and hurt by so many people and never really stood a chance. I hope she's finally found some peace

I am so glad you did a video on her. Aileen’s story is very complex. I have a theory about what triggered her murder spree. Richard Mallory, her first victim, was a documented violent sexual criminal. I think he did attack her and when she got to defend herself, it unleashed every emotion she had related to her past and she finally could fo something about it. I have my masters in social work with an emphasis in mental health. The mind is such a complex organ. I’m not making any excuses for what she did. There is definitely pathology there.

I'm a former social worker She could've had PTSD & the men she killed symbolized the men who hurt her in her life. Of course no excuses for what she did. Her family background molded her to who she became

She left evidence at every crime corroborating her stories. Unfortunately the police knew but they wanted more funding, book deal n movie. They needed thee perfect death penalty candidate to keep the death penalty alive in the state of Florida. Not excusing anything she did I'm more focused on the police that allowed her to continue for so long. Why weren't charges brought up on her. Also once she was deemed mentally ill why was she still a candidate for death instead of life sentence? This whole story is foul.

There was very little help for abuse of children in the country when Aileen was young. Homeless at 14 in Michigan?

She is a fascinating case study. I've done hours of research on her. Being a former Forensic Pathologist and medical examiner, I'm always analyzing cases. They are disturbing, but we can learn so much from them. God bless her victims. May they have eternal peace and rest 🙏🕊️❤️ You did a great job, as always! Thanks, Scott! 😊

@@shonacole2124 , perhaps a bit but she has a bad back story and was aware of her actions at every murder. Personally, I saw her more as an attention getter. When you are deprived of love, you will go to some harrowing means to receive the love you have been missing. She chose the wrong way to get that love. She wanted attention and acceptance. I just can't help but wonder if she had a totally different upbringing, would she have been a murderer? Such a sad and complicated case for sure!
She went through hell her entire life…everyone had a limit to what they can handle…the way she dealt with hers was revenge murdering. Anyone growing up like how she did would end up “wrong” to say the least.
People are brought up in situations worse than she went through but they don’t end up murdering people. Quit making excuses for a murderer :)

I wonder if she would have killed if she hadn't gone through some of the stuff she went through. Being molested changes people. She took it out on men which were the ones she was molested by. Not the exact ones but I mean she seems to of hated men. I think something might of happened at first and then she realized she could take their money and items. I mean, Richard Ramirez suffered brain injuries as a child, coupled with the fact that he had a messed up cousin who enjoyed showing him pictures of dead Vietnamese women who were raped and dismembered. I wonder if these same people are ready to come to the defence of Ramirez…..
I saw an interview not too long ago with the man who was undercover in the bar and I looked him up to see if maybe there were more interviews of him sharing his stories from his career and found out he passed away in August, 70 years old 💐

Thank you for this Scott. I study serial killers, and I believe Aileen is a psychopathic thrill killer. Her rage against her male victims is projected by the damage her grandfather did to her, the abandonment of her mother and father. She lived a brutal life which nurtured the serial killer we saw. The opening of your video showed a portion of her last interview, a truly chilling and disturbing testament to Aileen.

I live about 90 minutes from that bar, but I had no idea that it existed. You always provide interesting, thorough, thoughtful videos. The best thing is that you’re cool and nice, so ppl let you film everywhere. They wouldn’t let just anyone in all these places, you know. You come across as a smart but easygoing, classy dude. Her ACE Adverse Childhood Experiences scores were off the charts. Everything happened to that poor child. I am a child welfare case manager in Tampa. Human trafficking of children makes me so angry. age 11 - it is happening. Absolutely the men were victims too and she paid. Also major mental illness is sometimes genetic. She definitely suffered complex trauma as a child. I love your videos I'm on a roll here. You bring it to life as it should be presented.

I’ve watched loads of videos and interviews with her and some others RUclips videos and am still fascinated by them all. I wished she could’ve seen the movie and know that we all know her story. Truly a tragic life she lead, help was never offered to her as her entire family were offenders themselves and was never shown love, she’s definitely a product of a crap family.

Aileen was always an interesting case study. I know millions are abused, some even worse than she was, and they turn out to be wonderful, productive citizens. Others, while not turning into killers, never have the life they should have. I always felt, that yes, the first case was self defense....but after that.... no. I think she snapped, and it just became an excuse. I have just read the edges and middle of this case, this video has encouraged me to do a deep dive. One thing, Scott, you are always so respectful to the victims, AND to the perpetrator....and that is hard to do. Thank you for this, I love learning. I have said this so many times, but both you and Adam the Woo would make EXCELLENT History teachers at either the high school or college level!

Actually, look up women serial killers worldwide. There have been hundreds, and likely many more undetected exactly because they were women.

Hi Scott. Not heard from you in a while my friend. Just watched the vid. Absolutely superb Scott. Professional coverage. So entertaining and thanks again for super entertainment. I have followed documentaries on Aileen woornos and really felt for her so much. She suffered a terrible childhood but it is not an excuse for the crimes she committed, nevertheless, she needed help and it is help she needed, not death. She was not evil but dangerousily angry and full of rage. She needed to be sectioned and helped. The justice system is in dire need of correction. I absolutely agree with everything you mentioned in this report about her. She was a very angry and enraged person. She was equally a victim. God bless her. I remember when the crimes were going on and her eventual capture. I’ve always been interested in true crime but her case didn’t strike me until I watched the Charlize Theron movie, Monster. Charlize did such a good job!

You're right this is one strange story. On one hand the child abuse and neglect are heartbreaking and on the other hand the murders are heartbreaking for the victims and family. Aileen Wuornos actually slept on an old car seat that was in the back of the Last Resort. When she and Tyria Moore got kicked out the motel,Tyria went back to Pennsylvania and Eileen stayed around Port Orange and the owner of the Last Resort let her sleep out back for a while before she was arrested. My late uncle Kenny was friends with the owner of the bar (Al)and remembers Eileen sitting at the bar. One thing he mentioned to me that she would always play Randy Travis song Diggin’up Bones on the jukebox,it was constantly the only song she played over and over. Thinking about the meaning and the words of the song I’m sure she was haunted by her crimes.

I can only imagine what a 'thrown away' child would have to resort to in order to survive, physically and mentally. No 10-11 year old should be homeless and doing tricks for food/shelter/clothing, let alone bribing kids to be her friend. A history of SA, if she (a pathological liar - another coping mechanism) is to be believed, triggered some deep seated trauma OR SA was a convenient cover story. Maybe she got off from the acts of unaliving men.
NOT victim blaming, but were the men she unalived living the same type of life as her - hand to mouth? I never heard if they were 'Johns' looking for a hot date late at night in a bar or truck stop. Were the men random victims? Did any man ever come forward and claim he escaped her attempt to rob and k*ll him? Did police even want that possible insight put on the record...
NO one deserves to be unalived except for those who commit horrendous crimes. The lives she destroyed is her legacy.

You may think I’m crazy but she actually had a logical reason to be outraged. Any women who gets raped or sexual assaulted has a justified excuse to be as wreckless as she was. People tend to deal with their unfortunate life ordeals differently. Some people chose to let it go and move on with their lives while others hold on to their animosity and become vengeful like Aileen was. You really can’t blame her.
I know what you're saying and like Scott is saying, there are so many layers to this situation and it is a very sorry and horrible life that she had for sure. I am sure a lot of male mass murderers had a just as brutal childhood and that sucks for sure but we have to have law and order.

I feel her abuse as a child had a lot to do with her crimes. When a father abandons their child, it's bad. A mother who leaves their child is really hard on the child. A mother's love is important, and she didn't have that. Then, a grandfather who's molesting you, plus grandparents who didn't want you. I feel for her. You can see that she was angry over all the injustices done to her. I want to say I sense something demonic in her also. So sad...

Well now, this video is surely a surprise. Back in April of 1991, I walked the very path you’re walking, accompanying a famed feminist psychologist in a fact-finding trip just after Aileen’s arrest a few months earlier. Back then there were no shrines, but there was a ceiling (acoustic tiles?) covered with undergarments, maybe some bills too. Right outside that back door was a bench seat (from a van?) where she’d been sleeping at some point.
We traveled to Ocala, met Arlene Pralle at her horse farm with wolf hybrids and the first of many phone calls was received there. We stayed in the area for many days, getting arrest records, getting background info, meeting some of the key players in law enforcement and in her defense team.
I assisted for over a year, sometimes traveling to New York to continue to collect various media and legal info, and ultimately we went to the Broward facility where she was being held and met with her in person, in a very small room where she was behind bars and we were in the other side but behind a closed door with a guard outside. (The facility is abandoned, maybe even demolished but there are photos online in the abandoned state with her room noted).
I basically lived and breathed this case for over a year, transcribing hours and hours of phone calls. In a bit of an ironic coincidence, Aileen and I lived only miles apart in our young years. It was always present with me, the “what if” factor - what if I’d had x, y, or z occur; what if she’d had my life ? Her story is tragic on so many levels….
I haven’t yet had a chance to read Phyllis Chesler’s book, Requiem for a Serial Killer, recently out, but I know the work put into it and the care Phyllis takes with every project. There was so much of Aileen’s story left out of her court case, including significant details about the men she ultimately killed. One very interesting detail we discovered in broader research was the increase in violence toward prostitutes at that time and the advice she got from a law enforcement officer she knew to “protect herself.” And that she did….
I’ll let Phyllis be the qualified expert who understands trauma, ptsd, mental, physical, and emotional abuse to draw connections in her interactions with the men she killed (7 among unknown numbers in the course of a year) but I will say that her overwhelmed public defender (the Gainesville serial murderer landed in her lap at the same time - a whole lot for one small area to prepare) did not present some very significant info. And if you’ve read much about this as you’ve indicated, you know there were questionable moves by law enforcement from the beginning as they had dollar signs in their eyes from promises by producers and more.
Any way, I’ve followed you for a very long time now and gotta say, never saw this one coming! Brings back tons of memories. 💖

One of my best friends lived in Port Orange during that time and I spent a lot of time there during those years. I graduated in 1990 and it's crazy to think that was happening then.

Just across the street, The Varsity, is where Nipsey Russell worked as a kid and where many, many civil rights leaders, presidents, you name it, have frequented. That could have been a video in itself. Also, the Georgia Tech Village on the other side of the Interstate was originally "Olympic Village", which housed all of the athletes in the 1996 Olympics. I could see my former dorm in your video. Finally, the reason there is a fence in front of MLK's birthplace is because a crazy woman ran onto the porch about a year and a half ago and doused the home with gasoline. Thankfully, 2 bystanders tackled her before she could ignite. Sitting on King's top step at 6am on a Saturday when nobody is around is a feeling that I can not adequately describe. The MLK Historic District is literally my favorite place in the world. Love the channel. Keep it up.
