  • Welcome to the EPIC Adventure Outfitters Podcast, freakishly called "2 Dudes 1 Wrench". The title of this episode is "Size Matters, a Full Figured RAM Experience" - a deep and seductive talk on building, wheeling and breaking a full sized RAM half ton truck.
We're well into the world of professional podcasting now with 4 episodes. The first 3 were just junk, but this 4th one is where we really shine. Our shop 2022 RAM Rebel GT is codenamed "Swim Shady" and he's ready for action. We have first hand experience in pushing a RAM1500 to the limit that you won't find anywhere else.

Great video, guys! Many good one liners but the Carmen Sandiego reference is what really made the vid for me 😂

Long comment time- Your videos were definitely and inspiration for my own build. I'm in Central Texas and running a 22 Rebel with the regular Hemi. I bought it new off the lot, and three days later had it three wheeling and collecting pin stripes in Big Bend. Even in stock form it put up with every overland trail thrown at it. It's been to the mountains of Colorado, deserts of New Mexico, and the Gulf Coast. I've had it at an offroad park where it's surprised me and others. It's only with a bed rack, RTT, and bed full of gear where it started squatting and clearance became a problem. So last month, with 34k miles and tired Duratracs, I pulled the trigger on lift, tires, and bumper. I went with the 5" BDS lift with the Fox 2.5 shocks and coilovers, 35" Falken Wildtrak AT4W on 20" Fuel wheels, and the ADD Stealth Winch Bumper. The truck rides fantastic, and the tires are quieter than stock. I've lifted a few Jeeps, but this was my first time getting into an IFS lift. I was really hesitant because I didn't want to cut the frame on a nice truck. But after a month of daily driving it, I'm very happy with the ride quality and haven't had real any issues pop up. Being in Texas we all drive 75mph+ on the freeway, and while it doesn't have power issues with the 35s, the transmission is hunting a little bit at highway speeds. Which is noticeable with my Borla exhaust. The ride height is a huge leap over stock, and no more bed squat. I don't think I'll ever need to bump up to 37s.
Now the ADD bumper. It looks badass and has great build quality. But it's more form over function. I have three issues with it that no video I've seen mentions. First- The lower section of the skid plate bolts to the frame of the truck. Once the lift is on, you can no longer access these bolt holes. If you were to install it before the lift, you would need to drop the lower control arms and crossmember if you needed to remove the bumper. Or drill access holes in the crossmember? I don't know but that makes me nervous on such a critical part of the suspension. So I left in unbolted for now, and it doesn't rattle, and doesn't seem overly critical for attaching the bumper itself. Second- you lose your factory fog lights. It would've been cool if they thought of a way to implement them in. In the future I may add some aftermarket lights to mount on the frame under the bumper. Third and most important to me- the winch mounting isn't well thought out. I put in a Warn VR Evo 12k winch. You have to reach your arm deep into the bumper to flip over the spool. While that's not horrible on flat ground, It would really suck if you were say, stuck in mud. The box structure it mounts to requires the line to pass through an opening, then the outside fairlead. The winch line RUBS on that inner box structure. I'm not sure if reclocking the winch would solve this either. So hopefully I don't need to use the winch very often. I never got the truck stuck when it was stock.
And of course if wasn't until after I started ordering parts that I saw yall's video on the broken front diff. After having it out to install the lift, it is definitely wimpy. Probably half your comments begging to sell a bracket were from me. I'm planning a trip to Utah this fall and I'm paranoid to really wheel it until this is fortified. I've searched all over the internets trying to find somebody that makes reinforcements for this. Nothing. Surely it's an issue in the TRX too? I'm a mechanic by trade (not in the aftermarket unless it's my own stuff) but I'm no fabricator. I almost want to reach of to some companies to see if they are interested in making this. Maybe they are like you, and don't want the liability. Although from my experience in building an XJ, plenty of companies will sell stuff meant to reinforce weak components that don't end up working. So if there's any fabricators in Central Texas reading this, let's be friends! Or maybe I should take a roadtrip to beautiful British Columbia this summer.
I still plan on sticking with my Rebel regardless. I love this truck. I considered a Gladiator but it's too cramped. I love Power Wagons but they're huge. I owned a Tundra years ago, but after driving a few one the new ones- no thanks. My trips are usually taken with my girlfriend in the front seat, and our two huskies and rottweiler cozying up in the back part of the cab. It's a perfect platform for us.
Thanks for the great content guys. I look forward to seeing the next builds.

Funny to hear about the state of Telkwa pass. I know a Canadian RUclipsr did it in his Quigley 4x4 van so I was hoping to scrape my Sprinter (lifted, 4x4, skids, winch, etc) through it but it sounds maybe a bit too sketch for a vehicle that big.

Pffsssttt. you'd be fine. It's full size possible just as long as you don't care about your paint. I'd do it again in a full size vehicle. Cheers from the team at EPIC!

Personally, I’d love to see visuals with all the things you talk about. E. g.: different parts, technical explanations etc.
I listen to the pod for the most part but sometimes catch myself pulling up the video in the hopes of seeing a graphic or browser window with what you’re talking about. Might be just me though

Any options, in your opinion, to not drop the front Diff with a lift to increase ground clearance? Custom CVs and/or don't lift so high maybe?

    • @EPIC-4WD
      @EPIC-4WD  2 месяца назад +1

You'd have to do a long-arm kit of some kind, but then you'd have a wider stance, requiring wider fenders and have a bunch of non-oem parts to worry about if something breaks. This BDS kit is fine, especially now that we have solved the front diff breakage problem with our own fabrication. We've pushed the truck hard with the new fixes/adds and it's held up fine. Cheers from the team at EPIC!

If you can’t do a proper re gear have you considered something like 74weld portal axels to get your gear reduction? Plus 4.5” of diff clearance that comes with the set up 🤤

Any chop and drop situation from any manufacturer will cause the same potential issue. We've also heard of the breakage on stock RAM1500s. It happens on road and off. The other option is to do a strut spacer and make your truck drive like garbage while stressing out your CVs (we've seen this many times on spacer or level kits). Or... just leave the truck as-is and enjoy it ;-) Cheers from the team at EPIC!

    • @EPIC-4WD

You most likely will eventually. If you keep it stock you'll have better luck. If you chop and drop, then you'll most likely see a problem. Cheers from the team at EPIC!

For what it's worth, I've got a 2020 1500 with a Carli system underneath it and I've run 35's for a couple years now. I legitimately wheel my truck (I actually saw these guys and this ram near the telkwa pass) and I haven't had issues other than the locker solenoid failing but that issue was present even before the lift. 35 minutes under the truck and it was changed.
