The Burn destabilized the badlands and made it more messy

In VOY the Badlands were grey in DS9 they were *orange*
In STO it its similar to DS9 but they changed the Mirror Badlands to blue.
And in Disco its now a mass of red and orange swirls and yellow lightning.
Also the burn affected a lot including the Mirror Enterprise Wormhole and the Galactic Barrier.

It’s visually redone not sure why people want the 90s cgi that was even bad back then

They could've done the same design with modern techniques.

Playing devils advocate, maybe the badlands has evolved over time and become more hazardous.

Sure. But if your going to go to the badlands, and they are not visually recognisable as the Badlands... then why go to the badlands in the first place.
Why not go somewhere new? Why change what was already visually iconic...just for the sake of a name drop? Just go somewhere new then.

It probably has its cycles like our sun has solar cycles. Also, what if the burn changed the dynamics of the badlands

Have to give them credit, it looked a lot closer to the DS9 appearance than I remembered. I would still have liked to see some fire tornadoes roving around.
But I would also buy the idea that with time and the Burn the Badlands changed and were made more dangerous -- hence why it was so much more damaging to Discovery than it was to ships in DS9 era.

Nah i cant agree with you guys on this, the 2024 version is beautiful and dangerous, the '95 version looks.... Meh-lands. I believe nostalgia and inability to accept visual change plagues this fanbase

worf in a Klingon escape pod survive for days before erzi found him in a runabout after she disabled the nav computer to find him by the plasma currents

It could have used more "swirlies", I agree. But other than that, I don't have a problem with the new look.

A bigger problem is why would you put your space library in the middle of the badlands where no one can get to it. Presumably, you’d want people to visit.

There's a reason it's survived as long as it did, The first thing the Dominion would have done was destroy it if they'd known it existed.

They never addressed it in DS9 or Disco but the Badlands never dissipate, so what is feeding the storms? Something must be making the nebula expand. Is it a series of old black holes and red dwarf stars? What is it? Ion storms from the old TOS were also silly.

Or Star Trek discovery has very bad show runners and writers that don't know anything about Star Trek

I think it ties in pretty well to the 1997 DS9 interpretation of the Badlands so completely see why they went that way and I would say they have done a good job of updating the Badlands as they were last seen.
Although at the time I didn't like how DS9 changed the Badlands, definitely more of a fan of the tornadoes so would've preferred they use that as the basis but if they had I suspect we'd then be criticising them for not using the Badlands as they were last seen.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was simply a complete disconnect between the writers and the special effects people. The latter were completely working with the mindset of the series and not worrying that references in the script were to specific Star Trek locations in other series. Given that "badlands" is also a rather generic term, this could be easily forgivable. Instead of an inhospitable desert, it's a plasma storm.

I mean all the suggestions in the comment section or validating could be possibly correct that from a conceptual perspective the simplest explanation is ladies and gentlemen there's been the elasticity of time the Badlands hasn't been in constant syndication with Star Trek from the last time the Badlands has been seen and technology has increased CGI has been perfected and mature so there is an instance of wanting to do more with new tools and so from a visual perspective it has evolved something that we now don't recognize as well as we used to I do miss the original Badlands I kind of feel like stuff happened and we just didn't get to see it but that is the way the cookie crumbles sometimes

Yeah I too expected to see the Badlands like how they appeared in earlier DS9 and Voyager.
I too wish there was some explanation as to why it looks different.

Why not tie it into Voyager by having Michaels mindgame be in that ship instead of the library? That would have made the connection interesting - Now its just a namedrop.

It's 800 years since the 24th century... why can't the Badlands look different? Maybe something happened that caused the Badlands to go from being a tornado storm to "a lightening storm in space" lol.

Samuel is correct. There is no point to using The Badlands, if it's not actually going to be recognizable as such...
However, that's just par for the course with any New Trek.
