When she described how women’s bodies naturally crave carbs and wants to rest during their periods I was blown away. We can be so hard on ourselves. It’s ok to let yourself be lazy during that time and eat a little more carbs than usual.

@@TravelingFoodBunnyWell, papaya is a carb 🙃 My theory is stress gets more pronounced during that time of month and makes the dopamine released during meals more appreciated. Different women have different responses to food because we all like different flavors. I personally like sweet and/or spicy 😊

its very common in my culture that women crave chocolate in their pms or/and period! I don’t know if it’s a worldwide thing but the other day i broke my keto by overeating chocolate and i felt so much better that day physically even though I knew that what i did wasn’t the best thing for my weight loss “diet” but I was kind to myself about it and went right back on track! Funny thing turns out i was just PMSsing! we just gotta be kind to ourselves🤍

Am sorry, I have been overweight for a long time, but through OMAD, i lost a ton of weight. When I hit a plateau, I stopped OMAD and added exercises and chose to still diet, but mostly by missing dinner. I was able to maintain weight and avoided regaining weight I lost when I did OMAD. OMAD worked for me at a time when I gave up on any sort of weight loss plan.

I’m a woman in my late 30s and I feel very comfortable with fasting. The less I eat, the better I feel. On days when I need to do a lot, I don’t eat. Not sure what that says about my body or the state of our “food”. But I have noticed that a lot of my female friends can not miss a meal or they get hangry and they are very unpleasant to be around.

I agree.. I don't eat on my busy days, and once in a fast, I find it easy to go even for 3 days... I feel fantastic and healthy and mobile BUT, to start the fast after eating is hard... As in that first step... I feel like that, in a way this proves how addictive our food is, over it being a nutritious experience.

I have done OMAD and lost about 22 lbs. I feel great but now have trouble doing the OMAD. I relate to what she had said all along. For when we vary the kinds of fasts we do our bodies don’t get into a rut or a routine. As our bodies will adjust to a routine and then hold on to fat. So if I just avoid meals do vary my fasting, and then not getting stressed this makes a big difference . I am post menopausal so the cycle thing is really not relevant, but lowering stress, not worrying about it and taking one day at a time. I also ask God for wisdom, strength and motivation when I am fasting. This helps a lot. Remember if you are stressed, then your cortisol is up and your body is holding on to fat. Let’s face it. We are just bodies, not God. We love to look good, but any kind of obsession is not healthy. Just try and enjoy the ride.

I am a 77 year old female who started eating one meal a day when I was 14 years old. I did not do it to lose weight. I did it because when I would wake up at 8 :00 am to go to school the thought of food was ridiculous. I was awake, but my stomach doesn't wake up until 11:00am : ) I was starting high school which was too far away to walk home for lunch, which made me happy because I was not hungry for lunch anyway. I did eat dinner which was always some form of protein. I am a meat eater especially ground beef. At age 74 I had to stop smoking because I was diagnosed with lung cancer AND I was told I had to take it easy. I did. For two years I sat on my keister and put on 60 pounds. I have been doing intermittent fasting since June and have lost only 21 pounds because I still eat junk. As for my strength, I went to a physio therapist last year to alleviate back pain from the excess poundage on my gut and she said she hopes that she will be as strong as me when she is 76 years old. As for all those side affects you mentioned that women have from eating only one meal a day, I can say they did not happen to me or at least I am not aware of them. I am a very happy, well adjusted, positive, upbeat person. I will continue with the intermittent fasting for as long as it takes to knock off the extra weight. My main focus is to stop the junk food fest permanently. : )

I eat balanced meals, and noticed my taste buds have changed/reset. I eat Avocados, blueberries, & apples almost daily. I've switched the inflammatory oils to good oils.. It's imperative to do your own research and know what works well for you.. I do 10,000 steps daily ,no anxiety or mood swings!! I'm in a great place with OMAD... I am literally in tears! I have been told FOR YEARS that it is all in my head! Here I am now 66 years old and depressed because I just tipped the scale at 256 lbs and was NEVER overweight until after my 3rd child was born and at the age of 40. I heard to fast, so I did...I made it to 38 hours and and had to stop. I lost 2 pounds, but, after 2 days, that was regained. I wasn't surprised at all., as I was pretty sure it was only water weight. And frankly, I can pee 5 pounds. I only eat one meal per day, and I really don't have any energy or desire to want to eat anymore. I am so glad I found you while simply seaching excercises for seniors. I will be watching more of your podcasts and would love for you to have more for seniors. I am not sure if "Fast like a girl" would benefit me, since I haven't had a cycle since shortly after my 3rd child was born and I had a tubal ligation, which really messed up my cycles. I really haven't had a cycle since I was about 36 years old. And, I had spent so many hours in Gynocologists offices with no results that I have simply given up even going anymore. They really don't show compassion, just push another pill, and push me out for the next co-pay. (the insurance industry really ruined that) (Trust me, I used to work for a 3rd party provider, and saw what doctors were getting in capitation payments if you went or not.) Bless Dr. Mindy.

Same here! I used to alternate between OMAD and 21 hours of fasting at the weekend and used to feel great, then decided to stop fasting the last 10 days of my cycle so I don't mess up with my hormones in the long term, and that was a very bad decision! I'm gaining weight, acne, and hair loss 😭 so will go back to my old fasting habits, with all respect to science but now I believe that everyone is different.

I do eat sweet potatoes, squash etc. I have to can do keto. I do recommend the book while I haven't completely read it all. I have read about a lot of people stalling on OMAD. Good video, 61 have had partial hysterectomy and have had lots of problems, PCOS, DM (not any more) thyroid cancer, PSA/Psoriasis/Migraines. Most of my conditions have almost gone into remission. I just stumbled on fasting 2 years ago. Its a journey but my health is so much better. Was at dr apt the other day and suggested Ozempic no way I said I have been 5.5/5.6 blood sugar for almost 2 years. I will make it there without an injection.

Don't do OMAD, UNLESS you are obese. OMAD was the ONLY thing that pulled me out of obesity. After that, I never did OMAD again. I vary my fasts, with 20:4 as an amazing way to lose weight and a very long fast (48 hr+) once a month. I also DON'T fast the week before my period.

  • @tb54321
    @tb54321 9 месяцев назад +9

I think one of the key components to successful fasting is keto/carnivore diet. If you are fasting on a glucose diet, it’s miserable. Switching to a ketones based diet regulates the blood sugar and hormones so that you don’t have the misery that you get when you are running on glucose.
That being said, there are always off days where you just need to follow your instincts. I don’t stick to a strict schedule and I find that each month my PMS symptoms are so drastically different that I can’t predict my behavior - it’s to the point where sometimes I naturally fast and don’t want to eat and other months I’m starving and can’t get enough. Some weeks I’m full carnivore and it works great but some weeks I’m more keto and eat a max of 30 total carbs a day. I am flexible and understand that each day is different. I set different limits for myself each day based on how I’m feeling. Sometimes OMAD works great and I only get 1300 calories in and I’m fine the entire day. Sometimes I get home from work in the evening and need a second meal, but I’m cautious as to staying at or under 1800-2000 calories a day.
It’s like a budget. You have to manage how many carbs and calories you can spend each day, but you don’t have to live each day the exact same way. Sometimes you can even save up to go over a bit one day.

  • @heyjude57

Within an hour of waking, I have 2 oz of raw cheese and two scrambled eggs in a lot of butter which it absorbs and black coffee. I'm good until 2-4 pm, when I have my second meal, which is a hard-boiled egg, another bit of cheese, rump roast cut up and sautéed for 10 seconds in a lot of butter, and a piece of well-buttered sourdough toast. It's not pure keto, but I enjoy this, and it makes me happy. No fruit, no veg right now that it's winter.

I've already done my BTL so I don't think i am pregnant. Or am i pregnant or might there be other causes? For your info, currently i am fasting for Ramadhan and seems like im doing my OMAD (one meal a day since i just drink a glass of plain water during my sahur) and take low carb meals for breaking my fasting everyday. @@RARAFFIDAHASNAWI I think it would affect your cycle because I tried OMAD again recently and the very next cycle was a week late and after that it dropped to 26 days. its probably because the body thinks it's in survival mode and not wanting to support pregnancy when there's suddenly a lack of the usual nutritional resources. i spoke to my doctor and she said if I really wanted to go ahead with it then the maximum should be 3 months on it then take a month break before starting again

Depending on weather ... on cooler or cold days, in order to keep our body warm, we should eat more meals a day.
    I advocate OMAD, 2MAD occasionally.
3 meals a day on a 12:12 or 16:8 with a break of between 2 and 4 hours are the best ways to feed and nourish our body.
My advice is to cut off (for those overweight / obese) or cut down on "Cooked carbs" based on my 18 years of research on gerontology and immunology.
FYI, I do 3-day water fast every 3 months.
Dr Mindy is so right about having more proteins for our woman's body.

I am enjoying mixing it up literally every week.
I was never a breakfast person but now I kinda force myself to have a breakfast each week, just to mix it up.
I’ve also gone hard on longer fasts then ate sardines for 2 days, after another fast I’ve eaten out and eaten what I like with lovely sugary pudding.
For me I liken it to tricking my body.

But roughly 30% to 40% of my days are fasting in some form or another.

The only thing that takes away my menstrual cramps is going low carb and keto. No painkiller or natural remedy has helped me so far. So I always cycle in to lowcarb / keto the week before my period. 🤷🏼‍♀️ This has also helped me with my PMDD. No more moodswings. Depression. My period just silently arrives. 🎉 I would rather listen to my body in this case. I mean the difference is huge! It can even make it come one day earlier. Which I don't mind. Before I could rather wait for my period to come. And that is frustrating.

I was diagnosed diabetic Oct of 2022. I immediately took my health seriously losing 95lbs by cutting out flour, sugar, pasta, rice, oats, cornmeal, and processed foods. My current A1C is 4.8. I ate 2 meals a day between 6am-3pm. Because of my A1C my dr took me off Metformin. I am also late stage perimenopause (52 yrs old). I have had significant hair loss to the point i am now wearing a wig or hat when I leave my home. I am also dealing with an on going iron deficiency with my ferritin level currently 2.8. I have very heavy periods that are lasting almost 2 weeks at a time and coming again 2 weeks later. I am in a constant state of exhaustion! Because of my intolerance of prescription iron meds, my dr has me taking 2 flintstone vitamins with extra iron each morning. Once off Metformin I have started to gain weight again - 15lbs. I have convinced my dr to put me back on a lower dose of Metformin to help me turn my cravings and weight back around - I’m terrified of going backward to the horrible state I was before my diagnosis! I do take a number of vitamins to help me.
All this to say weight loss and keeping weight off is a serious struggle, losing my hair is terrifying, and fluctuating hormones are making me feel out of control….. is there ANYTHING that can help??
Thank you for talking on this subject! It’s so important!!

Good for you for taking care of yourself and losing the excess weight. I hear you on the (extreme) hairloss. I have this problem myself caused by too much stress and trauma in the body, eventually turning into adrenal fatigue (burnout) 3rd stage (body stuck in fight/flight and in catabolic stage). I know the feeling of shame of losing so much hair. I wear a hat in winter and a cap in summer when I leave the house. I know my hairloss will get better when my body isn't in high stress anymore, I can sleep better and I stop overeating chocolate. I hope Mindy will give you some useful feedback and/or you'll be able to fix your hairloss soon. Just a small tip, you may want to look into silica (ortho sillicium for it's bio availability I believe) for hair loss and other things (hair, skin, nails, bones, liver, nerve function, collagen etc). I recently bought The original Silidyn (not sure if it's a local brand), and it is supposed to take about 3 months or so for it to start working (or in my case longer because of the chocolate addiction and extra stress).

I eat two meals a day. Also be careful of caffeine and tea can block iron absorption. My hair had thinned from low iron, low vitamin d and severe stress but shedding has reduced. It is normal to lose 50-100 hairs a day. Low vitamin D can also affect thyroid which can cause hair thinning.

I’ve just watched a podcast about lack of oestrogen in menopause causing some of these issues (on the Diary of a CEO channel) - apparently HRT can solve these problems in many women. I would only use it as a last resort though - I’m trying natural remedies at the moment (vitamins, magnesium, Ashwagandha, etc) and a whole food diet (cutting out sugar, simple carbs and processed food). Ashwagandha in particular can lower glucose levels, balance hormones and reduce anxiety.

But you do indeed need proteins to not lose muscle mass. However, the next person says "protein is all a lie". What to believe? Because all of them are somwhat backing up their claims with research paper. So far, I am eating everything but UPFs. I figure that if I can do that without stressing, it will match the hormones naturally. For me that generally works out to skipping some dinners, one 24-hour fast each week and an occasional 36-hour fast if I'm ready. It feels a lot better than forced OMAD and the results are the same.

I have read a handful of comments, and it seems that some People think that feeling lousy after eating is normal, when it's really not. 1 of the possible causes is postprandial hypoglycaemia, which is unhealthy. One is supposed to experience no change in Energy after a meal-that's what's healthy. a change, either up or down, is an indicator of an underlying problem that needs to be addressed. regards.

Mindy-I hope you see this-I started doing IF, eating 2 meals a day with each meal eating about 50 grams of protein per meal. I wanted to do OMAD but didn’t think I could get all my protein in one meal but did end up starting OMAD about 6 months ago, transitioning fine and have been able to get 100-120 grams of protein in that one meal. I exercise 5 times a week in the morning and eat my 1 meal in the evening. I’m 56, weigh 123, and take 5 grams of creatine daily. I have not had any of the low progesterone symptoms you have mentioned. Can I please get your thoughts on my program. Thanks

Thanks for your comment-it allows me to clarify my exercise to make it clear I’m not overtraining in my opinion anyway. I play tennis once a week (nothing strenuous), do a workout class in the gym where weights are incorporated twice a week and walk on the treadmill (no incline due to a bad knee) for an hour, twice a week.

If you are in menopause you really shouldn’t have any progesterone to speak of anyways. Progesterone is the “babies” hormone and is why we get hungry when it is the highest right before our periods happen. If we don’t have periods this whole talk doesn’t even really apply to us right?

people do water fasting for very extensive periods of time with no negativity so doing OMAD is providing more than enough nutrients, when choosing the proper foods. It's doing a little planning that's all it is. There is no fear in having one meal a day provided there is time spent putting a proper meal together.

OMAD is great if you are diabetic/pre-diabetic or medically obese (more than 30%+ BMI).
If you are just like 10 to 20 lbs overweight, you do not even need OMAD.
2 meals a day or time-restricted feeding with a smaller window is good enough. Also don't completely avoid carbs, even for men, you still need some carbs.
Initially, I could go without much carbs, for weeks even. But once I reached 205 lbs (I was initially around 255 lbs), I started working out. Ideally either 150 minutes of cardio or lose at least 900 calories a week from exercise, but that was devastating on my joints to do in nearly hour-long sessions, so I split them into 5 regular 30-minute sessions.
With carbs, I recovered faster somehow but most importantly could push harder. I stagnated on workouts without carbs and wasn't breaking new ground, but with carbs, I started progressing further which is good. And your workout performance should always be progressing, if you don't see improvements in a week or 2 or it gets worse, you probably need to check your diet again.
I know some will yap and say I need to be fat-adapted / more ketosis etc but hey I do what feels best for me and it worked.

Fascinating, thank you! I love OMAD, it seemed to come natural - it was also a vital part of curing me from my cooking addiction (yep, not eating - the designer itch, playing with food, experimenting with recipes, spices, molecular gastronomy, gadgets...) I miss that part as a creative outlet, being on carnivore/paleomedicina PKD. Actually, paleomedicina do advise against OMAD. However, as time goes by (just under 6 months into carnivore), I am learning to "go with the flow", I mean, try and interpret the signals my body sends - am I really hungry (if drinking water, fixes it, I am thirsty; if a slab of butter and air-fryer sardines look tempting, then I must be hungry; I any food seems repulsive, then that's bad news, I have a cold and need ketosis). It's a very steep learning curve, though!
