Re the pronunciation of Jared Flood : I dug around and the only thing I could find with anyone saying his name in his presence was an 11 year old video from webs. Either they mispronounced his name in front of him and he was too polite to correct them, or, far more likely, it's pronounced flood as in an abundance of water. Apologies!

Thanks for the list of designers. I've stopped buying from certain designers because of poorly written or very unclear instructions. It' s the yarn cost & time plus ending up being too frustrated and really not enjoying the project . I have patterns or books from a few of the listed designers and they are very good at clearly explaining the whole process.

THANK YOU! Finally some designer recommendations that don't revolve around petite knit or my favorite things knitwear! Don't get me wrong, I like (most of) the designs of both of them but they're all everybody talks about and I feel like every knitter on YT is knitting the exact same sweaters by the same designers all the time. This is finally a list with (for me) absolutely new names that I will definitely check out! Huge thanks for giving me some variety! :)

Totally agree. I came back to knitting after a few years away and was perplexed by the coalescence around the same 4 designers. And the same color choices. I knit to make unique pieces and that often means not following the same designers as everyone else. But to each their own. I just finished a Sophie Scarf, though, so I'm not immune to it either 🤣

One of the most transformative moments as a knitter for me was trying on a test knit I was doing for Anna Johanna. Up to that point I had enjoyed knitting sweaters but thought that fit issues just came with the territory - especially with cardigans falling off the shoulders. But this test knit.... what?! It sat on my shoulders perfectly! That's the day I branched out and started looking at different designers, and I find that the designs I enjoy making/wearing the most are designed by math-y designers. Like Anna Johanna and Carol Feller. Because they understand construction from am engineering standpoint.
Great list of designers - thank you for putting this together!

If I may weigh in, another fabulous designer whose patterns are accurate, detailed schematics, frequent stitch count tallies…and fit soooo nicely and have surprising little details one might overlook at first glance on Ravelry- Heidi Kirrmaier. I and several knitters I know have made her Sunshine Coast, a spring-summer pullover with gorgeous lines. It looks good on EVERY body! I also knit her cozy Mountain High…another winner. I really need to make more of her designs, eg Vitamin D cardi is very popular. To knit her is to love her! Yay Heidi!

I really enjoyed this video, thank you! For me, the biggest difference in good vs. bad fit is the relationship between the front and back widths. I took my sewing patternmaking skills and applied them to knitted sweaters - it makes more of a difference in fit than the back elevation step. I make my front a full 2 inches wider than the back. I do not have a large bust, but a wide rib cage a result of pregnancy, and more common than you might think). Most well drafted sewing patterns will have a wider front than back, regardless of woven or knit fabrics. I love all the designers you mentioned, and Julie Hoover is my favorite! I would also add Martin Storey.

I am also another Isabel Kraemer fan, and I love love that her test knitters are very good. Together their collaboration creates the patterns we love that are easy to comprehend and create sweaters right the first time and fits divinely! I am also a fan of others on your list. I noticed that the last time I knitted without any major tailoring ie. German short rows etc, I was in my early 20s and thin as a rail. Now that I’m in the throes of menopause I won’t even try any patterns on Ravelry that do not show how the FO looks on a variety of shapes and sizes.

I've made two Isabell Kraemer jumpers - Driftwood in an aran weight cotton, and Kynance Cove in a fingering weight merino/silk/possum blend. They both fit unbelievably well and I thought today that I should just use both those patterns as templates for any other jumper I want to knit. I've not knitted any Carol Feller patterns, but I found her book on short rows extremely helpful in understanding better how they work.

Hi, Andi Satterlund makes excellent vintage style knits that fit perfectly. Svetlana Volkova makes beautifully fitted lace designs that don't ride up. Jennifer Steingass designs yoke sweaters with perfect waist shaping and Rebecca Clows of Creabea podcast, makes the most beautiful cabled detail jumpers that have a range of inclusive sizes and she's the first designer I've encountered that understands how different jumpers will look on a petite person. She's a new designer and deserves more recognition.

This just appeared in my feed and yay! finally someone talking about fit! I have heard about most of these designers although not yet knit any of their designs, but I know Amy Herzog and Carol Feller through craftsy and had planned to follow their courses. I keep seeing so much of always the same designers and even patterns, and not much is said about really fitting a sweater, about gauge issues, about how yarn behaves after the wear and tear etc...it's all about new, and quick and next. There are few podcasts that take into account the slowness of going more in depth...thanks for sharing will definitely check out your channel.

I totally agree about Isabelle Kraemer. I’ve knit many of her jumpers (sweaters) and they all fit great. I’m currently knitting a second version of pink memories and she does a couple of sets of increases at the top of the back as well as the normal raglan increases which gives a great fitting neckline.

Thank you for saying it like it is! You are spot-on correct that every other podcasters are jumping on the one or two it-designer band wagon.
A lot of popular designers sweater patterns result in too much fabric in the under arm area because they are accommodating the big color work design in the yoke area. The end result is the sweater is too big and boxy. Too much fabric in the under arm area means it is hard to feel comfortable with to get a heavy winter coat over it. Yes, the yoke design is nice, but not practical!
I did not realize this until my third sweater. I am new to sweater knitting. After the third sweater being very big and boxy in the underarm area, I stop knitting colorwork sweater with kind of construction. I buy a pattern to knit, not to have to figure out what modifications I need to make in order to have the sweater fit. I don’t have the knowledge or desire to do that. Patterns are not cheap. If the end result is not ideal, it is a waste of my time and money to buy the expensive wool to make it. I either have to frog or not wear it. This is the reason why I don’t chose to knit sweaters. It take so much time and money to make. If the end result is not good, then I am enthusiastic about knitting a sweater. I might as well buy it to avoid all the headaches and aggravations.
Thank you for sharing and recommending lesser known designers. I have heard of these designers from a podcaster a few years ago. ❤❤

i have an Amy H Custom-fit pattern! one of the best fitting sweaters i've made, out of abt 2 dozen swtrs. since i'm almost as neurotic abt fit as i am abt color, i'm really enjoying your compilation here... AH also puts the shaping incrs/decrs *not* at the side seams, as you noted--they're more towards the center front or back. And the contiguous construction, as in IK's Cloudesley, is the bomb!
    thx for focusing on fit!

Two new videos in one day - love it! Totally agree with you on looking at all the completed project photos on Ravelry to see how the sweater fits on different bodies. Also love Amy Herzog & Carol Feller. I found both of them on Craftsy back in 2016 after I retired and picked up knitting (and when Craftsy was a great platform). They were both great teachers as well. Thanks for all your content 😍

HI there! Great video! Totally agree with most of your picks. I know I'm old school on this, but I think bottom up and seamed sweaters fit the best generally, although there are exceptions to every rule. I also love Jared Flood, Amy Herzog, and Julie Hoover. Would add Anne Hanson and Kim Hargreaves to your list. Kim never made the jump to Ravelry, so her patterns are only available in books, but if you can find them, they are beautiful and fit perfectly.
Custom Fit does still exist. I sell dozens of Custom Fit patterns to my customers - It's a little fiddly for newer knitters to get their measurements just right and to understand the different amounts of ease, etc. I teach how to do that math in my membership site, but I will tell you, very few of us knit because we want to do more math 😂 Again, great video.

I love Carol Feller and Jared Flood ( I always thought his name was pronounced "flud" ) I do have to give a shout out to a couple more designers that do their work - Kate Davies, Ella Gordon and one that many people don't know about and that is Libby Jonson from New Zealand - Her patterns are fantastic, she pretty well only designs for women, has a weekly video chat and explains so much - also goes by Truly Myrtle Designs. @@mistakkesweremade It was the only site I found that still does it.
Yes, I did just recently finished one , I was having my doubts , nervous, chest measurement is taken ABOVE bust , so yes doubts big time, but said okay let's see, I finished , washed and was amazed . I would definitely add more ease than 2 " next time because of my figure I think , but my entire life I have dealt with shoulders that do not fall in the correct place . Positive , I found the instructions and videos included were clear for someone who has no idea how to even go about constructing a sweater, so you really have to take this with a grain of salt.
