Mistakes were Made
США
Добавлен 16 ноя 2020
A podcast dedicated to all the mistakes I make in knit object creation, whether refusing to follow patterns, making things up as I go along, forgetting to read patterns properly or generally pay attention to what I'm doing, or a variety of other things that might sometimes result in garment chaos and sometimes might end up my favorite knitwear of all time.

Stainless Core Cord Showdown - Chiaogoo vs Lantern Moon
Thank you for putting out more resources to find sustainable yarn and educating:) I understand why her video is a good jumping off point to talk about these topics however I feel like your approach was harsher than necessary. I enjoyed her video like many others for the reason that it is a non intimidating quick overview of ethics and sustainability. Of Course we should continue to educate ourselves but again as a jumping off point her video is great. I think you have a lot of valuable knowledge to share but putting down another person's video seems unnecessary especially when we're all working towards the same goal. :))
This review was very helpful Thank you
I love Rauma, it becomes softer when you wash and wear it, I usually have a t-shirt under or singlet under.
Thank you. I'm just starting out on the interchangeable journey and these are the first cords I've purchased to go with the mindful needle tips. If someone could drill a hole sideways through the stopper screw threads, they'd make some decent chunky buttons.
❤
Omg 😂😂😂 Was looking for differences between English and Irish style knitting... What a wonderfully hilarious tangent 🤣
Seems like you would need to subtract the initial cast ons from number of total body and arm stitches to get correct number of increases needed in each section
Please. Don't ever stop talking nonsense. We need 'the Nonsense Knitter', right? 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The growing of socks make me think of cotton as the unknown part of the yarn. Things I used to make with cotton also did grow. But I am merely guessing.
Totally agree!! Julie Hoover is my personal favorite.
Let me thank you for this timely review. I have been looking for info on Lantern Moon needles for months, because I am thinking of buying a set. There is hardly anything on RUclips about these needles, other than the occasional unboxing video & instant observations. You have answered some of my questions, brava!! I also wonder about how slicks they are. I want to buy the fastest wood needles, because I want some speed but I prefer the warmth of wood. Hate the clicking of metal needles. Also, I’m wondering about the length. 5” needles are long enough to cross my smallish palm & stick out on the other side by 1.5 or 2”. Is there a reason to want them this long, perhaps better supporting the weight of the project? If not, the 4” needles might be fine & easy to use. Again, thanks for your insights on LM. I’ll be sure to check out your other reviews for the real 411.
Thank you for this video!!! You convinced me that I need to swatch before I start my very first garment and I'm glad I did. The fabric created with the needle size suggested and my yarn choice was way too loose so I used smaller needles, did the math and began knitting. The fabric is great, although I did make some mistakes that I can live with. Thanks for all your helpful videos.
Awesome! Glad you ended up with a first garment you love : )
Purl Soho's 'Top +Bottom Top' is a nice sleeveless top, too.
Ooh, love a European shoulder : )
Love, love, love Isabell Kraemer’s patterns and the pattern support on Ravelry is outstanding. I always read the pattern support posts before I start my project and have never had a problem. Isabell totally stands behind her patterns.
If you wanted something more along the lines of a sleeveless tshirt, the Sand and Sky Tank by Universal Yarns, is an option. I found it to be quite an enjoyable knit, and easy to make adjustments
Thanks for the tip! :)
I haven't tried it but I definitely bought it! I shall return once I'm brave enough to start stitching 😂
You can do it!
you have made a gross generalization by saying getting a GOTS certified yarn is absolutely possible to do. it might for you, but in my country there's exactly ONE GOTS certified yarn brand, and apparently they only make silk yarn, which is not fitting to most knitting projects
It is readily available in many, many countries across the world. I'm sorry yours is not one of them. If it's an important thing to you, never hurts to email your favorite brands and ask if it's something they're considering
You have now influenced me 😂. I love a ribbed turtleneck and have just added this pattern to my favorites in Ravelry. Thanks!
🤣
I am currently very much into "conceptual knitting", meaning I am too broke to be buying yarn, and this is a delight. Your storytelling is so lovely!
What a lovely thing to say, thank you!
In terms of construction I think Ailbiona McLochlainn has to be one of the most innovative designers around. She is a Knitter's knitter with details that make my heart sing! Btw, I hope you don't mind this interjection, you say her name Albeena and she lives in the Republic of Ireland. Woolly Mammoth Fibre Co lives in Northern Ireland which is part of the UK.
Interjections welcome :) thanks!!
Looks good! I’m never sure about necks like that. I always feel like I’m not wearing them correctly and I fuss with them. I like them so much on other people.
I think the neck as you made it looks great on you!
Yup! This is a really good episode. Thanks for doing the hard work!
I just an hour ago followed a search for a particular bind OFF and saw this link for my 2x2 cable cast on which I was stumped by as the woman who seemed quite knowledgeable showed this method you explain .. which seemed unnecessary to my logical mind (but as a relatively new knitter … what do I know) So I asked her.. why can’t we just cable 2 k, 2p, ? Before waiting on a reply… I searched again and HERE YOU ARE! Thank you so much!!
Wait - if this #2, was there a Showdown #1? I missed it!!
She did one comparing cords called Stainless Core Cord Showdown - Chiaogoo vs Lantern Moon
I recently broke two mindful cables. Snapped right at the join. I assume it was my fault but switched brands to Lykke anyway - stiffer but more substantial. They so far get my engineering approval but they curl all over the place.
Not good to know , but only that I am not the only one that had this happen .
I think a lot of people are afraid of failure. Failure is a great teacher. I don't mind frogging even as a new knitter. I've crocheted for decades and done my fair share of frogging.
Thanks for your clear instructions. I'd rather make them than spend $$30 for some wire. I already had picked up wire hangers thinking about this.
Haven’t invested in interchangeables yet. I’m a bit worried since I loose things way too often! But I love my chaigoo fixed! I just add a size/length as needed for new projects
That is exactly what I was going to say!😂 I almost have every size I could ever need….
I refused to do the fiddling! You verified that what u was doing that worked worked for others!
Omg thank you.
Mindful cable is the only one I've had suddenly snap off at the join while knitting , I was taken by surprise , had no pre-warning. Broken end had steel plies, definitely not a single , but can't say if it is braided inside or not, I just tossed it unfortunately
Oof, that's not a pleasant surprise. Thanks for sharing the info though!! I'm wondering if it isn't just a smaller gauge braided cable, because my brain can't accept warping and bending with what I know both of braided steel in general and the other two cables in specific
Honestly. My favorite circulars are my old fixed cables, not my newer interchangeables. I have full sets of 4 different brands. Still prefer no joins!
I just ordered my large set yesterday. And listening to your video I’m glad I did. I think I’m really going to love them. I was knitting something on chiaogoo and you know how slippery they are. Well my wrists started hurting so I switched to my Knitpicks wooden and the join is making me crazy because this particular yarn is catching. That’s when I said time for new needles. Thanks for your review. I think I’m going to be happy with them
Sheep die from flystrike either by starvation/dehydration - they are in so much pain they can't eat or drink - or by developing sepsis and/or necrosis from the wounds the fly larva creates. The current data on the mulesing alternatives show they have about the same effect as mulesing but they cost more time and money. I personally don't like the way Aussie farmers mules their sheep: there is no legal requirement for veterinary supervision while mulesing sheep, anyone can do it. But I also recognize that paying a vet to work for you all day however many days it takes to mules your flock will eat up your profit. And that the profit is what feeds the farmers.
acid dyes are lower on the destruction scale than industrial leather or denim production..... pick your battles.
I didn’t know about GOTS! That will help me a lot ❤
THANK YOU! ❤
I have no idea what for but I'll take it and thank you in return 🤍
For posting proper information and showing your research.
That I'll definitely take, and thank you in return for believing it's important x
What I didn't hear about is the longevity factor in relation to environmental impact. What I mean is that wool, cotton, linen, nettle, and silk definitely are hard-wearing and with proper care the garments made of them can last decades. Case in point: my mum still has a cardigan my grandmother knit for her when I was in kindergarten. The wool came from an unravelled old sweater, not brand new. My Grandmother died in 2004. Mum still wears her cardigan on chilly evenings at home. What I'm trying to say is, how can we compare materials without considering their "usage lifespan"? Surely the more you use your object, the lower their overall impact is?
So. Are you going to do a follow up video to this one? You brought up a couple good things that would be more interesting to explore. The retting of bamboo is one and how the super wash yarn game is changing is another. I don't see what Breathing Yarn said in her video as fear mongering. Nor do I see your response as a be all end all answer. I see both as adding to a discussion that is on going. I think it would be interesting to see your views on what happens to wool once it is gathered and where it goes to be processed and made into yarn.
Good idea but follow-up unlikely, would require investment I simply do not have. There is a new-ish mill not horrifyingly far I hope to be able to visit and learn from but would be unlikely to involve proper journalism
I appreciate your nuance and information. You’re humble and considerate. I’m sad about superwash merino
Sad about superwash.
I appreciate this approach! Everything is grey and we're all doing our best. And learning more can always change the choices you make. I make rugs and I love getting my materials at the thrift store. Takes a bit of time, but well worth it when I find a treasure.
Me: starts fear mongering about Dihydrogenmonoxide just to prove a point
Fellow lab muffin beauty science fan? ; )
The ions! Don’t forget the ions! *shudder*
So sheeps for wool only is unreasonable, but there are wool production focused farms. There are wool sheep like Merino that are focusing on massive wool production. Merino is so overbreed to produce wool that it goes with many health problems like many cravasses in which insects and fungi will grow. All domesticated sheep have to be sheered because that's the way we domesticated them, but meat focused sheep have generally poor quality wool that will at max be some kind of filling material. It's unsellable as fibre for clothing. Mixed quality sheep have decent meat and wearable wool and are generally considered by smaller to mid sized farmers. But those farmers that are generally needed for example in landscaping have a problem in selling their wool, because the market is flooded with cheap merino from big farms. That's of course mainly a big fashion problem (Buying Merinosweaters for 60€ new) but if you're Merino is cheap, it's most likely partly from a big Merino farm in Australia.
Maggots infestation causes sepsis...blood poisoning.
Thank you!
I raise chickens. We have to have so many square feet per chicken. But my chickens are used only for egg laying. The same with sheep. You have to have so many acres of land, and constantly move them so that the degradation of land doesn't happen. It states you can have 6-10 sheep per acre of land. 30 sheep per 100 acres of land. For a lot of farmers, this is their livelihood and how they support their families. The same with alpacas, goats, cows, yak, buffalo, and even camels. That's why it's important to move the flock to different parts of their land.
The phones that they used to make a video leaves a high carbon footprint. The camera leaves a high carbon footprint, too. Natural wood, bamboo, hemp, cork, and recycled materials have the lowest carbon imprint. The highest are beef, fish, pork, chicken. A cup of coffee and tea emits more carbon imprint than the natural wood, bamboo, hemp, cork, and recycled materials. As for child labor practices... nothing within making fibers has been discovered. However, making clothing like buying things from Shein has been reported for years for unethical employment practices. Low pay wages with high work hours. As far as the sheep go, there's sheep videos on RUclips. They explain why they shear the sheep. They show the process every step of the way. It's very educational. And a lot of sheep farmers will often let you or give you a tour of their farms. The ones that make yarns to show their ethical practices. Sheep have to be sheared. If their fleece gets too heavy, it'll cause problems for the sheep.
This is my problem: 'fear-mongering'. Look, we'll try our best. At least I want to believe in it! The real problem is that there are too many of us and the resources may or may not be enough. Still, we, as farmers and consumers, do our best, particularly when we make our own clothing. Thank you!
Honestly that was the point of the original video tho, it’s being completely misrepresented here. Idk why this one is so judgey and hostile when the original video was a very gentle version of “let’s do what we think is best, and not judge others for what they think is best.”
I love the sweater pattern!!! It looks wonderful on you!!! The color is so earthy and warm ❤
I’ve visited a hobby farm that keeps sheep just to make wool yarn - they own a storefront in southern Wisconsin. But yeah, on a large scale, it doesn’t surprise me that wool farms don’t exist.
