I can see how it's got under your skin , it's of that solidly dependable , but interesting and fun era of car manufacturing , my Grandfather had a few such cars when i was a young boy , MG Magnette and Mercedes Ponton , for instance , i loved playing in them . Btw being positive i think that the residue of the first hand Painted coat probably leveled up the surface a bit and made the spray coat more successfull . Another thought it was intended to be a jet turbine powered car !

Solid survivor. You remember cars from the 70s rotting away in 10 years. This goes back probably nearly another 20 years and is still great.
Did you notice as soon as you took the wheel trims off, the Viking punished you with its fuel and spark issues?
It refused to be driven away from its trims.
It ran on the way home toward its trims.
Yet you didn't refit the trims so it said "flip you" and threw its spark away.

Great job looks amazing compared to what it was!!! Only thing in my opinion let's it down is the wheels now you've taken the hub caps of . Perhaps if you keep it you will treat it to a set of black banded steels
I had a 1954 p4 when I was 17 in 1962 I’m now 79 I have fond memories of that car

Hello from one hatched in Fort Gary, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1952.....
I am fiddling "Swinging on a Gate" on my Violin.
In the 1960's we were dirt poor kids and used Coca-Cola to remove rust from chrome bumpers.
One thing I found with my old P4 was that in northern Germany,in the very cold temperatures, the old girl started easily with the starting handle. I loved these episodes.
What a transformation - back from the dead , well done.

It’s becoming my must watch vlog brings back so many happy driving memories with my dad. Only car as a passenger I have ever comfortably read a book in during a long journey. Doesn’t it eat up the petrol I remember my dad complaining about that more than once.

Please, please, PLEASE Ben, wear a bloody respirator when painting, especially with Enamel paints! I’d love you to be around past your 50s without having some kind of horrible lung disease.

Absolutely loved what you have done with a car that so many would walk on by. It's spring, and I am getting my P6 out this afternoon, finally the weather is better. New headlights, give her a once over, then start to drive her with a trip around the block a few times to check everything, then up the road a couple of miles to top up with some fresh fuel. Happy days. I know exactly what you mean when you are keeping her - they get under your skin and stay there. Top, top, work.

Your videos on the Rover took me back 60 years, when as a boy I would sit next to my late Uncle in his Rover 90. Red leather seats, huge Viking steering wheel and super long gear gear change and little lights on the dash surrounded by chrome rings with real wood on the dash and on the doors (NO plastic !).... Halcyon days !.... if you want halcyon days then you should keep it !!.
Speaking only for myself granted, but I'd watch you work on anything, doesn't really matter. You make everything fun to watch mate.
hello ben, just found this absolutely brilliant episode on the rover 100. So much so i ve been binge watching your back episodes.The main reason i wanted to message you is i remember as a young lad my dad borrowing my grandfathers P4 110 in bottle green. this would be around 1970 and we got pulled over by a police car, {big deal in those days}. It was in Chester and my dad thought he had been speeding but it turned out that there must be a switch on the dash that only puts the dash lights on without the headlights. It must have been at night and you could see where you were going with the street lights and didn t really need headlights. I ve never forgotten it because my dad got told off by a policeman haha!, for not having his lights on. Don t suppose the police would bother these days but just in case make sure you have your lights on. I think i ve still got the under dash tool set in my workshop complete with touch up paint canister and mini grease gun. Thanks for a really interesting video bringing back lots of great family memories of when l was a young lad
Talking about the next owner as if you aren't going to keep this forever. The Tasty Truck, Tasty Viking and Tasty Baguette are all permanent fleet members now and you know it! 😂

For the time it was designed this was a complicated car. That works against you now. But once the weakest links it still has are addressed properly it will serve you. Despite being mistreated and left sleeping in a meadow it wants to go again. She showed you what it’s still capable of. She only wants to deliver if everything is sorted. That’s all! What an absolutely amazing recovery job you did on that offside. I would have died if that had happened to me. It looked like a disaster. But, now no one would ever suspect anything went wrong. You snatched victory from the jaws of defeat and what a great video it turned out to be. A real corker. Well done indeed. I have a bodyshell to paint this year and its inspired me to grind on and get the job moving after stalling on micro-fixations which were just robbing me of precious time.

Loved every bit of this resurrection and turning it in to a classic touring car was just a great idea from the subscriber. I’d like to see more of this for sure as a throw back to the Jim Clark days of the golden era of Motorsport 😊

Your videos remind me of a 1954 Rover 90 I had many years ago with a valve HMV radio. Lots of nostalgia. Great car. I suspect your clutch is lighter than many modern cars. I think in the rear axle has a breather valve on top which is worth checking to make sure the ball bearing is free, this avoids pressure build up. These are great well built cars of yesteryear.
Many thanks for a very entertaining hour or so - love the way the old girl won't play ball most of the time 😆I spent my first 10 years at work as a motor mechanic, many moons ago, worked on many cars, including Rovers such as yours, if my memory serves me correctly side valve exhaust overhead valve inlet ? and Jags, minis, Cobras, Ferraris ,GT40s a real mixed bag - even F1 cars. Also had a hand in restoring 3 double decker 1953 London buses in USA about 15 years ago - so I feel your pain ! Keep up the good work !
Lovely old Rover and defo worth saving. Your paint job did'nt turn out too bad in the end and she looks a lovely old girl. As for the 820 Rover it still looks modern and I would still want one today as long as all the jobs had been sorted particularly the head gasket. Love your honesty on these projects and enthusiasm and dedication.😁👍

Really enjoyed watching your video on the P4. I have a P4 95 which is very similar to the 100.
Interested to see that the battery has been relocated under the bonnet instead of that inconvenient place under the back seat.
You mentioned purchasing lead replacement additive, the P4 was built with hardened valve seats so will be ok on unleaded fuel unless you drive it really hard. Apologies if that is something you already knew. Have used unleaded fuel in mine for 13 years with no problems. I also use Esso super grade which in my area does not contain ethanol, another safeguard against it attacking susceptible materials in the fuel system.

For all the work you have put in it you should keep it, it's nice car i bet there's not many of them around .
I had a lot of success with coach paint, but I applied it with a brush and followed the instructions to do it when it’s warm. In fact 24 degrees was the minimum. It looked awful. But the next day it had markedly improved itself. After a week it was stunning! It formed a skin which pulled tighter and tighter, evening itself out. Daily it looked better. Eventually I polished it and it came to a gun finish. Spraying would have saved an enormous amount of time.
I was told to brush horizontally so one brush mark 'falls' into the other by gravity.

thanks for another great video ,i once had a old morris minor that i bought for my daughter ,it had been stood rusting to death for maybe 15 years ,but did it, very simple engine helped but it always struggled on tick over and turned out to be perished rubber fuel lines that was forever filling the fuel resovoir with little bits of rubber ,once all replaced it ran like a 1960s 1000 cc enginge ,love your videos
You have done an amazing job with the Rover. My uncle had a Rover 110 in the mid 60s which was wonderful and so well engineered and it looks like the structure of your 100 is still pretty good!

That old school circuit racer really makes it stand out from the crowd and gives the old girl a new lease of life and even more so when you get it closer to terra firma 😉 cut front springs and flip that rear axle or use lowering blocks its easier haha...

Excellent, Fabulous Ben. Just like you, i am in total Love, Love, Love her so much. She is a real Stunner going down the road and keeping up with the modern traffic as well. What a great paint job you did Ben, Love the British Racing Green with the Cream two tone bodywork. She has only some little bits to finish on her. Fantastic episode, my grand parents had one of those cars back in the 60’s.
They both passed away a while ago and I found some slides of them with the car when they brought it brand new.

If you are going to paint it.
Then oven pads aka Brillo pads
(But buy the cheap non brands saves ££) are great on chrome or aluminium.
It's far less abrasive than sand paper.
And polishes it at the same time to a near mirror finish.
I've used it on aluminium BMX frames that were painted and it brings it to a polished chrome effect.
It also removes rust from chrome too.
So good to see the old Rover go from an abandoned car to something really special. I look forward to updates as you make further improvements and hopefully get The Viking out to some shows over the summer.

Glad the old boy came around in the end. A nice bonus of some Chester footage, too. I live on the shores of Western Canada these days but twenty five years ago and more I worked in Chester and loved the old city.

Loving the Rover resurrection and all of the content on your channel, which I have been bingeing over the last week or so.
FYI coach enamel is widely used for painting commercial vehicles, lorries, busses etc. To spray coach enamel its better to heat the paint in a hot water bath, rather than thin it. an old metal tank with an emersion heater works OK.
When it's heated the paint thins naturally. This means you can get a heavier coat on as the paint thickens as it cools and aids with drying. Unfortunately it does still take an absolute age to dry out, as its not curing via ca chemical reaction as 2K would, but air drying.

P.S. I should mention you drop the open can of paint into a the hot water bath, not pour the paint into the heater bath! :)
As soon as you mentioned roll on paint, I knew that some mistakes were about to be made :D
Also, the battery kill switch, a cool idea, BUT I wish it was in a bit more inconspicuous location, but that's just me.
Yet a another great episode nonetheless, that car is so cool!

I think turning into some sort of vintage race car is a brilliant idea and it looks absolutely great! Perhaps when finances allow a v8 swap would be awesome maybe a 4.6 Rover v8
Fantastic content as ever, Ben. As the roll paint went on I have to admit I was in somewhat disbelief and concerned…🤣🤣, you pulled it back though.
Try opening your pattern up on the spray gun and overlap 70%. And for next time put the enamel in boiling water and get it good and hot. Before I retired I worked for Sikkens and Spies Hecker as a paint demo guy, painted hundreds of cars in my day, just ask and I’ll try to help all I can. Love your Videos, it’s my wife and I s favorite thing to watch eating our lunch😁
I've tried everything on the gun to get a wider pattern and that's the best I can get out of it, any ideas?
Ben, spend a little more and buy a better gun with 1.4 mm cap, that gun probably has a 1.1 cap. See if you can find a used Sada online, there not cheap but worth it in the long run
The first thing to stop working on a cheap gun is the spray pattern

That intake mid section that seems to do nothing, is actually an intake silencer! Remember, the P4 was a luxury car and engineered for refinement, so noise reduction was a priority item. So you need to fit an air filter. Also, check the charge from that alternator with some load on it, like headlights, blower etc, because the pulley size may prevent full output at normal emgine speed with a load.
Thanks for putting all this up. I'm going to own a P4 soon, so it's been good to see so many aspects get looked at. Now, when you started the engine after fitting those new points, it was firing against the direction of the starter, which means it's over-advanced. That could explain the stutteriness when coasting on little throttle, which is when the vacuum advance would be applying further advance to the ignition. Cheers.

Absolutely fantastic. I tried buying one of these in the nineties. The owner had it parked by the side of the road, it was restorable, but he refused all offers to buy. Over the years it rotted to nothing. Such a shame. You're to be commended for what you've done here, Ben. The P4 really was a quality car. Go for the paint on top, it would look amazing. And don't sell those hub-caps! Put them in a box and keep them safe. What a brilliant channel.

I remember driving my 1958 Rover 90 up Wrynose Pass in the Lake District, about 1978 so not very long ago. I couldn't get up the Pass because of the steep road - I kept getting fuel starvation, the SU pump in the boot being unable to pump at that angle. It was only a few years ago that I discovered that SU pumps that push fuel, from the rear, are different to ones that suck from the front. That was probably my problem! Great work on the car Ben. I had P4s for general use for a few years back then, lovely cars, quality and good looking and a nice smooth 6 cylinder engine. Thanks for your videos, great fun.

Brilliant series and loved every minute of it, I’ve had my 1962 “100” for 29 years and it still drives great and very comfortable on the open road . It should have a reserve petrol toggle on the bottom middle of dash board that gives you a reserve level that basically sucks lower in the tank when switched over fyi hope to see it again soon on an upcoming episode, and I just subscribed cheers 🍻 and well done 👍

Great transformation! I have used rollers on boats but not cars and got a great finish. We used mini high density foam rollers as used for gloss paint and "tipped" it with a velour paint pad. You can aklso get velour rollers which give a good finish, You will get bits with a woolly roller. Shaking the paint tin is a bad idea, because as you found it creates little bubbles.
Enjoying the show, I've painted a number of vehicles with a roller to a high shine with no roller marks. The key is a foam roller and a clean second roll to take out the marks and bubbles. Renew rollers regularly. Then cut and polish.
