Your mum seems such a sweet lil lass, I always wash out DPF’s unless it’s damaged there’s no point buying new. Yer a good lad helping Mum out- Hello Tasty Classics Mum.
Hello - love your vids. I had similar issue with my wifes Mercedes C250cdi. Limp mode, check engine light on. Although I am pretty handy with the spanners, all my experience is petrol cars and I have always heard DPF issues are a nightmare so I was pretty annoyed to see when I plugged in my little OBD reader and got DPF codes. If this happens to others stop right there. Don't go any further until you plug in a decent scanner. Luckily I have an Autel 906pro. This revealed in fact that the code the little OBD reader gave me was correct BUT in fact it was two codes with the same 4 digit number but a 5th number giving more specific information. This pointed to a pressure sensor. On the Merc it is a differential pressure sensor so it has 1 electrical connector but two pipe unions - pre and post DPF to compare the pressure and establish when to re-gen. This was knackered. Changed that and like you was miffed that it was still in limp mode despite a few Italian tune-up's down the local Autovia. Then I came across "Adaptations" on the Autel. Went through that procedure - it learns the new values - and bobs your uncle, sorted. The good thing is that the 906Pro is accessible to most people - Snap-On brilliant but a huge amount of money. For a grand you can get a used 906 or 1500 new one. Its saved me thousands over the years. Greetings from Spain!
I would imagine the atmospheric pressure is just what it says, the pressure of the atmosphere on that day. If you had a depression nearby, it could easily be 991 and would only change as the weather does. Well done for sorting it for your mum.
I agree with that! It says exactly what it does on the tin so to speak. It's the atmospheric pressure at that time at that location. It obviously compares something coming from the car as opposed to the outside atmosphere.
DPF probably didn't need to be removed from the car. All it needed was to fix the underlying fault that was causing the car to not regen the DPF. Which in this case was a replacement sensor plus telling the car the DPF plus sensors had been replaced / re-initialising them. And then maybe a clean with Launch DPF cleaning fluid with the DPF in the car. Oreilley's youtube channel has loads of useful DPF videos. It seems that there are loads of mechanics that are hopeless with DPF's. But they are actually quite straight-forward, once you understand how they are part of a system in the car.
You're mum is so sweet and to think she could have been ripped off is disgusting. Well done for sorting it out and that Renault is very pretty, I myself have had Renaults and I've loved them ( 2 Lagunas/Renault 11/Scenic and megane coupe). You are always guaranteed a comfy seat and electrical gremlins with these cars.👍
You have a lovely mum there, Ben and I'm glad you fixed it for her. Back in my day I had a girlfriend with a T reg Renault 5TL and it went like stink. Embarrassingly enough, I had a job keeping up with her in a Escort RS2000. I think my favourite looking Renault was the Renault 17TL/TS.
We had an old Brown Renault 5 on our farm and it lived for years and years and would not die. We put livestock in it, lambs and calf’s mainly. Hay bales, animal feed, vets, herdsman and so on. In the end we drove it off a ledge into an empty gravel pit, 30ft drop. When we got to it the engine was still running and it still drove (sort of). We left it in the pit and it has now lived in a 30ft watery grave for 35 years. Hell of a car and it still brings a smile to my face when I think of the scrapes we got into in it.
I lost my mum in 2007. Really brings home the "You don't realise what you've got.." saying. A good mum is by far the best thing you could ever possibly have.
I agree with your lovely mother I do love a Renault I had 8 of them 5 gt turbo, 25 v6 turbo ,Alpine v6 turbo etc etc have not had one for many years but miss them all 🧠🤝💚👊 glad you’re looking after mummy💕 🙋♂️ love your channel 💥.🙏
And this is why I always use the same garage for servicing and mot. They are fair and explain why they need to fail or advise what needs to be done. And never replace anything that doesn't need to be replaced.
Your mum is absolutely lovely I warmed to her the second I heard her soft spoken voice. She’s done a good job with you that’s for sure. Think she needs to be on the channel more often. I’ve had 7 Renaults and every single one bar my 25 failed In life miserably 😂😂
Your mum is so lovely, she’s got a lovely nature very calm and kind and her voice is very relaxing, you definitely had a great upbringing Ben, lovely family ❤
I love your mannerisms around your lovely Mum, you don't say anything against her, but you give the camera that look whenever she says something doddery. 😂
Renault are evil when it comes to repairs, they have always tried their hardest to make home repairs as awkward as possible. My first job was in a motor factors and Renault's and their oval plate numbers were a nightmare, two Renault 5's built on the same day of the same trim could have lots of differences such as one might have Bendix calipers but the other might have girling and one might have a Bosch distributor while the other might have a Lucas style. Of course I still bought a 21 Turbo years later which was a fantastic car apart from it's very militant french electrics.
You obviously haven't had to work on any Vag cars in the past 20 years. Equally as evil when it comes to parts differences between apparently same model year and specs.
I remember in the eighties British built cars were the same due to constant strikes by suppliers of many different parts to the car factorys,BMC and ford's.
The pressure line from the dpf to the differential pressure sensor is the go to source of problems with a clogged dpf. The dpf itself may not be blocked at all but because the pressure line is blocked the ecu thinks the dpf is blocked. Of course the dpf may be clogged, but with a correctly reading dpf diff sensor the ecu may then allow a regen. You can clean dpf's yourself, just blow it out with a pressure washer and dpf cleaner. Little tip for moderately driven modern turbo diesels, use a fuel additive regularly and every 6k miles or so, use a high intensity diesel cleaner. I use Mannol ester fuel treatment on every other tank of fuel, it's 1ML per ltr of fuel, so very cost effective, and JLM extreme clean for the every 6k mile treatment, that is quite expensive at almost £40 for a ltr can, but worth it to keep carbon at bay. Also, it would be worth checking and cleaning the egr valve, it's very likely that will be well clogged to.
I had Leon a few years back with a DPF, the guy at the garage told me about the potential DPF issues and his advice was 'thrash' the car in low gear at least once a week as it prevents potential clogging issues.
Can't fault the choice of car - I've got a 2005 Grand Scenic that I bought as a very cheap runabout in 2018, before the electric handbrake failed, the MoT expired and I left it standing on my driveway. It was so nice I wanted to put it back on the road, which I did in 2020. Since then, in total I've spent £2,086 on parts (repairs, servicing and cosmetic improvements), and done all the work myself. I've thoroughly enjoyed doing it and learned quite a bit about working on modern-ish cars in the process.
Ouch your mad that shape are so cheap but I don't understand my smax likes to give me a headache not as bad thousands but just cot me £400 for MOT and £300 in September.
Your mum is a legend, our family always had Renaults, now I have a Mégane RS 265, Clio 172, and a Mégane r26. They may not be the most reliable but love them.
Oh Ben, we love our mums. Mine's been gone many years now, but still the glue and gaffer tape of our family. DPF's though bum pain indeed. Had one on a 1.4 HDI peugeot that was being a helmet. It was so slow, it couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding. Dealt with on a downhill stretch of motorway from 5th to 3rd several times. Gearbox fcked but DPF lived another day 👍
I had a few Renaults. My last one got written off by a cement lorry and that did me a massive favour! It had a misfire problem at cold and three separate garages couldn’t fix it (incl. main dealer, independent Ren specialist).
My mates dacia duster had a blocked dpf, he took it off to get it cleaned but it was too blocked. I cut a flap in the top of the chamber and drilled /chiseled it out, it was full of black gunge. The steel was too thin to weld so I repaired it with a piece of stainless steel plate gun gum and tek screws, it been fine since, goes like the clappers and has passed a couple of MOTs.
You know the video isn’t important here. It was fsking fab to see you looking after your mum so well and as much as anything the wonderful rapport between you both. Treasure those relationships! Fair made my day young man! :)
Nice to see another vid. 🙂 BTW "Atmospheric Sensor" would be measuring the atmospheric pressure (ie, the outdoors) not the exhaust, surely? Interesting to hear the calibration process that the mechanic had to go through. Modern cars eh. 😅
Thank goodness I drive a 300D Mercedes diesel 1978. Only electrical components on the engine are the glow plugs and starter motor. If warm enough, don’t even need the glow plugs. 😂
To be fair the 1.5dci engine is one of the better ones out there. My wife is on her third renault starting with a new grand scenic in 2011 . It was faultless in every way. Traded it in 2018 for the new grand scenic . Dissapointing car compared to the older model . She traded that in 2021 for a megane rs estate plug in hybrid . Absolutely fantasti. Machine . Its quick and does between 80 to 90 mpg. . I drive a 2012 vw touraeg which ive had for 6 years . Its heading gor 250000 milles on the clock and i love it. I also have a few cassic toyotas in the shed . Dorfy for the long msg but im in bed with covid at the moment. Really enjoy your content.
Mum is great.... I also have a 2005 Renault Scenic 1.6 , 16v auto. Currently got issues with the auto gearbox. Going to convert to manual gearbox. But why, an amazing car. When you drive it, you begin to wonder why all cars are not designed like it.......absolutely perfect in every way. I'm glad your mum is a Renault fanatic, she is a bright, unique person, who wants a unique driving experience.
Nice one Ben I had a s scenic drive well but if it was not leaking the windows getting stuck for ever buying switches for it then I had a oil leak and cud not get a O ring to fit like your problem no other part wud fit so had to bite the bullet and buy the part for 200 note and then to top it off a week later after fixing it someone hit me head on and written it off .i think it was a blessing in disguise Have a Top week dude 🙂🔧✌️
I kept getting a stuck in regen problem in my Astra H. So Sunday morning I took it for a blast down the M23 to cook it up. Problem sorted. Seven days later a speeding ticket! Bollox.
Nice one Ben nice to see your mum happy and back on the road. Btw when you see the exhaust in one piece it's basically still the original exhaust from the factory I bet you didn't know that 👌
Loved this Ben, this is the kind of knowledge I like to have in my back pocket. Garages will try their best to make as much money out of the general public and especially women. I fixed my car myself over the weekend and saved upwards of £300 doing the job myself. Being as my car is a 2011 ML350 I felt very accomplished!!!!
@@Little_Sidhe I watched you tube videos and also have some basic knowledge my late dad taught me, just about to start my own channel called Mrs Fix It but not posted yet as still getting to grips with editing xx
had my renault done by O,Rileys Autos, he has a chanel same name, he videos the whole process and explains what to do and puts it on utube and no need to remove the dpf off the car, well worth a look 😁
Mot happened two weeks ago on my sisters Yaris 1 litre said I needed two new front suspension struts and coil springs, quote for work £780, went online priced new shock struts and coil springs separately £102.00 on Ebay for four parts ( Quinton hazel struts a and Napa springs), bought a coil spring compressor for £10 hardest part was getting the old ones off as the bolt were solid with corrosion took about 3.5 hrs all in to swap them out, I am no mechanic I have very basic skills but saved my self £660 there about it was not really that difficult TBH, went back for retest and garage passed it with an advisory on the front NS tyre the car had only done 5 miles since the MOT so why they never picked up on this originally ?They tried to sell me a tyre for £55 , I said no will take to the tyre centre and the guy there said nothing wrong with it 6.5mm of tread life no bulges cracks or tears, left the tyre on no point throwing away good money when not needed. if you have the tools and read up watching RUclips tutorials you can save yourself a packet. Wont use this MOT station again. TBH the old struts and coils did not look too bad just very light surface rust Thank heavens for YT and Ebay .
Hi Ben,her indoors has the petrol grand scenic that I spend a lot of time under. To clear some fault codes I disconnect the battery, reconnect, reset the damn radio code then just drive normally for a couple of days and let the brain reset itself. I find this better than giving my hard earned cash to the local Renault dealer, the other thing is most code readers don't work on her car.
I really enjoyed this episode of TC. You're Mum is gorgeous, and I hope you fixed her reg plate light too. :) How dare Renault try to rip her off like that! She lucky to have you watching her back, that's for sure.
Another way round it would have been to get the car Terracleaned. Probably cost about the same but you don’t have to remove anything. Had my Jag XF 2.7 diesel done and the difference was amazing. Even my wife noticed !😊
Ben although I watch all your videos anyway because they're fab, I actually prefer you doing quirky fixes like this that shows how you got around otherwise prohibitively expensive standard solutions. Magic worked again.🎩
That's what its about saving money, my dad took his defender over to where he normally takes it, and they wanted to charge him 1200 quid to do a list of jobs, one was 200 quid to toss a bottle of injector cleaner through it, and a £1000 for a steering box, We were like where you getting those wages from?? The steering box only came to about 400 quid, he was putting £400 on top that, then £200 for labour. We took it else where and they moted it, They said nothing wrong with the emission smoke side of it at all, and the steering box was an advisory. I got in touch with a company who revamps steering boxes, and got his done for £200 quid. From the £1200 that the garage wanted to charge my dad, He managed to do the job for £400, and that was adding new pipes and PAS pump, So well under what the garage was quoting and wouldn't have done. Also my dad threw £300 at it for a new rad and fancy pipes. So it was all in for £800, £100 for the two MOTs.
I bought a Renault 9 once for £3000..... once was enough! 6 clutch cables, 2 clutch pedals, 4 speedo cables, 1 new door lock and a cv joint later, I sold it for £50! Biggest load of ballsack I ever bought!
Super work Ben.. well done what you need to do is take it out once a week to give it a blast to keep the dpf empty. I dont know in renaults but in peugeot and citroen theres a dpf additive fluid you put in a tank which is added to the fuel to help burn off the soot build up when out on a motorway run etc...
Diesel owners take note you have to get those rpm's up regularly or it will cost you. Great vid. Btw considering your mum driving style you could delete the DPF.
@TC-tn9tb >>> I was thinking the same idea as it's only there for 'box ticking' for the greens movement. Older dervs was basic even with a turbo/s which give you more HP (thinking MK1/2 golfs) with the additional more cleaner burning out of the exhaust pipe. Ice cars today are over loaded with tech etc I could go on - so meaning the modern car will @10 years off the road or be a parts car from repair costs! Their perfectly usable cars being sold for scrap/breaking every week why? Repair costs !!! The manufactures what it this way..... for you to buy more cars = more profits for them 😒😵 Keeping older cars on the road, is becoming normal in last 2-4 years why? the cost of new cars!!! Talk about stabbing yourself in the back! 🤓
O’Rileys Auto uses some stainless wire on a drill to clean out the pipe and once he has broken through he uses the Launch UK juice diluted fifty percent as recommended and using a spray gun blows into the particulate filter the recommended amount. It dissolves the soot. The differential pressure sensor measures the blockage across the filter. Watch O’Rileys Autos he is in the know.
Great stuff , I like how your video and effort shows the people as to how they themselves are so easily extorted out of their cash. I bet the dealerships wouldn't advise a driver to have the unit pressure blown clean. No their Job is extortion much better off with the Classics that what we know to be real cars for real motoring . Not a half ton of plastic and 50 uneccessary sensors BTW when the Driver themselves had a pop at getting the vehicle ready for its MOT with the Haynes Manuals..
I have a transit custom that I bought brand new. 18 months later it needed a new engine under warranty. It’s done 60k and has been main dealer serviced every year. A month or so ago I got a DPF fault. Crazy money for a new one. I bought some DPF cleaner off Amazon. Ran that along with some injection cleaner. Cleared it. Fingers crossed.
Hi, great upload! What happened with manufacturing 70ties onwards, cars are the early adopters, is that products are made to generate revenue, to last but with considerable cost. Front springs will snap roughly every 4 years, each MOT has to bring in between 4 to 600 pounds no matter what. Parts prices increase 25 to 100% each handling step, excl import duties.... I do classic & prewar, the rest, exceptions excluded, are just cannon fodder to be remelted. I will not start on EVs..... Great channel!
Revving the bollocks off a 2L turbo diesel won't have much effect on the atmosphreic pressure reading, cos that's the air all around us being squished by the forces of gravity pulling it down against the earth, so the car's sensors take that reading, plus the resdings from the other pressure sensors for the turbo gubbins, it does mathemagics and stuff to squirt the right volume of fuel to air ratios, and then allegedly makes the car go, also 2L diesels aren't good for pottering about, they're motorway mile-munchers, gotta get them all hot and bothered so they don't make their own supply of coal... :P
Great result but still a lot of wedge 🤦♂️ i stepped away from diesel after my mk4 Golf pd130 left the fleet! Your mums car looked great underneath for 13 years old 👍🙂
Hi Ben.
Cherish every moment you can have with your mum.

Yes, the ecu uses atmospheric pressure as a reference for all the pressure sensors and the correction factor for turbo boost pressure.
Love it Bemused BEN 🎉😂
All I got from this was that I miss my Mother, nearly 14 years gone now.
DPF probably didn't need to be removed from the car. All it needed was to fix the underlying fault that was causing the car to not regen the DPF. I kept getting a stuck in regen problem in my Astra H. So Sunday morning I took it for a blast down the M23 to cook it up. Problem sorted. Seven days later a speeding ticket! Bollox.
Great video and great to help mum😀♥️👏
Nice one Ben nice to see your mum happy and back on the road. Btw when you see the exhaust in one piece it's basically still the original exhaust from the factory I bet you didn't know that 👌
Nice to see you helping out your mom. Top bloke! 👍🏻💪🏼
Put Bell Add Diesel Additiv in the tank every time when diesel is filled up. Keeps the Doctor away...450.000km Saab 9 3tid tidy
Go Angela, how did you teach yourself?
@@Little_Sidhe I watched you tube videos and also have some basic knowledge my late dad taught me, just about to start my own channel called Mrs Fix It but not posted yet as still getting to grips with editing xx
Loved the video, plus it was nice to see your mum 👍.
had my renault done by O,Rileys Autos, he has a chanel same name, he videos the whole process and explains what to do and puts it on utube and no need to remove the dpf off the car, well worth a look 😁
The DPF King
Brilliant! Well done!!!!!!!😊
Have some decency and buy your Mrs a proper car.
@@chappy0690 I couldn't agree more but she likes the damn thing, she doesn't have to work on it! 🤪
Hi Ben. I have had my renault grand scenic. 1.5 for 10 years 258000 miles. Still going strong. Have hardly paid anything for repairs. Love mine.
I really enjoyed this episode of TC. You're Mum is gorgeous, and I hope you fixed her reg plate light too. :) How dare Renault try to rip her off like that! She lucky to have you watching her back, that's for sure.
Your mum is a sweetheart
Mum's cool, dire car choice though 😂
I've owned a Renault 5, 9, 19 Turbo, Clio and a Zoe Electric. I loved them all.
Another way round it would have been to get the car Terracleaned. Probably cost about the same but you don’t have to remove anything. Had my Jag XF 2.7 diesel done and the difference was amazing. Even my wife noticed !😊
Great real world diagnostic and a happy Mum what more could anyone want!
Quality content and great to see you mix it up. Pleased mum is up and going mate.
I bought a Renault 9 once for £3000..... once was enough! 6 clutch cables, 2 clutch pedals, 4 speedo cables, 1 new door lock and a cv joint later, I sold it for £50! Biggest load of ballsack I ever bought!
Aww Ben's mum is lovely , well done Ben !
Your mums a lovely lady ben cherish her always❤❤❤
Miss you both!!! HUGE LOVE!!! xxx
have u
tried cleaning the O2 sensor buddy? Maybe its covered in soot.
Brilliant vid Ben 👏
Your Mom is a sweetheart sadly mine is gone. Thanks for the sticker you sent me!
Hoorah! You won the day. Excellent result for both you and your mum. 🏆😊
One of my favourite cars of the past was my 1972 red Renault 12. So smooth to drive and reliable as well.
Love the thumbnail
Nicely done
That GOT attire fits ur personality
Nice one. This stuff is always good to know in case of future problems.
Waiit till your mum get into a Honda, your mum is so sweet.
You're a hero , well done .
Fantastic video. Pleased you got sorted and saved money 👍
At least you didnt buy an EV, thats the best way to be enviromentally friendly keep an old car running.
You have a lovely mum. Your such a great son helping her to motor on !!!! 🙂
Great your mum loves her car good for you to look after her. Car after all we only have one mum
What sweet lady your mum is and you are a good son doing all that rather that getting ripped off big time .
Cheers 👍
I had a Renault 1.5 dci grand scenic was brilliant to be honest and very reliable
Had to look up MOT! No inspection in Wisconsin other than emissions. You could drive a frame on the road here.
Great stuff helping your mum out👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Great work Ben! 👍
Nice video 😃 enjoyed that… good old-fashioned fault finding 👍 now it’s a year on did it pass again 😅
Super job...... really enjoyed this 👌
Its weird how you love what your bought uo with im a ford lover mate of mine hus family had audis so he loves them.
Well done always look after your mum 👏
Great result but still a lot of wedge 🤦♂️ i stepped away from diesel after my mk4 Golf pd130 left the fleet! Your mums car looked great underneath for 13 years old 👍🙂
Great video, just make sure your mum lets you know asap if any warning lights appear.
