That Mondeo is well equipped! It has the high performance 24 Valve V6, manual transmission, etc, etc. It's too bad the sills (rocker panels) got rusted out. I would think a few patch panels would be able fix those rusted out areas. You can't beat a lightweight sedan with a powerful V6 engine!!! Six pistons are better than four!

Back between 2008 and 2010 I had 4 separate Mondeo Mk2 's I loved them, one of my favourite cars. I had 2 4cylinder 2.0 models, and 2 V6 2.5 Duratec Ghia X models, with the auto boxes. The V6 engine is a wonderful thing to drive, as long as the Inlet Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) unit is working - if it fails, the secondary intake ports dont open and you get much less power when you boot it. The Ghia X was the one to have, had full leather, trip computer, graphic info display where your coin tray at the upper left hand side of the intrument panel is, heated seats, looked so smart compared to the basic LX models. I had to get rid of the V6 in the end as it was just so thirsty round town, I was only getting between 17 and 22mpg, with the auto box responsible for a lot of the extra fuel consumption. Manuals are better, so the ST24 has better performance than the Auto version, and better mpg, but still thirsty though. One of my V6 models was needing the rear exhaust doing, and I bought one from Ford and fitted it myself - they have an extended length system, that runs from the middle box, to an intermediate box at the rear passenger side, and then the pipe comes out of that box, goes across the car to the driver's side rear corner, where there is another muffler and then the tailpipe. Most Mondeo's had one rear muffler on the passenger side, but the V6 had 2 mufflers, but only the drivers side one had the exit tailpipe. I would say a performance exhaust would be best for that car, as the standard exhaust will make the car too quiet, and could be too restrictive on the engine - having 3 separate boxes the gas has to pass through.
Would love to see that old girl given a new lease of life as the Mk2 Mondeo is now pretty much all but extinct - going out of production in 2000, so 23 years ago now. The original Mondeo Mk1 celebrates its 30th birthday this year, coming out first in 1993.

What was meant to be a beater for a few weeks turned into months as i actually gave up looking for my desired car as the Mondeo was just so damned good. Awesome engine note, great torguey response and super comfy.
After 8 months i found my desired low mileage Saab Aero and parted with the Ford. I wish i had put it into storage as like this one it had no bodykit and i suspect a future classic.

So much nostalgia with this. My first car was a 1998 2.0 MK2 Mondeo, which I traded up to my first ST24 at 18 years old. I ended up having to sell that due to an engine failure and a few years later got another one. Owned that for about 4 years before buying a newer MK3 ST TDCI and converting the ST24 in to a track toy and upgrading the engine to an ST200 engine. I fitted a genuine BTCC splitter and the hopes of making it a early MK2 BTCC replica but unfortunately a change of job meant I had to sell the car. To date the 2nd ST24 and the ST TDCI are the only cars I regret selling. I couldn't help but watch this and remember all the common issues such as the arch rust, yet still miss mine so much. Glad to see another one rescued from immanent death. May have to find myself an ST200 now as a second car

Hey we got it here in the 'States too. Called the Contour, it could be optioned with the 170hp 2.5L V6. Later, the North American performance division SVT released a version with the 200hp tuned V6 (basically an ST200 I believe). They had a cult following, and I knew a few people that swapped in 3.0L versions of the 24v duratec for more TQ.

Fix it , it is by far in better shape than most of the other cars you have repaired on your show ! I am in the USA 🇺🇸 and I owned the sister car to this , I had the Ford Tarus SHO 1997 ! They share the same engine and power train although I had the automatic transmission and yours is the 5 speed ! When these cars are right , they reward you with running really really well and are fast ! And also handle really well with a smooth comfortable ride ! Well worth the cost of repair not to mention how good they make you feel driving it to cars and coffee ! LOL 😆 I would think that it should be very easy too see a nice return on your investment and your time , over what you would see from a standard Mondao without the 24 valve engine ! Anyway have a great time working on it and enjoy working on one of Fords really good ones for a change ! I can't wait for your next show and see you working on a late model classic !

It was panful watching you try and get it running for the first time. I was a Ford technician for many years at a dealership in the US. First thing is the car is the same as a Ford Contour or Mercury Mystique in the US. I was yelling at the tv saying the fuel pump access is under the back seat. Good you finally found the inertia stitch, fuel cuts off in the event of a crash. You do not crank it over and over to get fuel to the fuel injectors, cycle the key for 8-10 seconds at a time a few times then crank. There is also a Schrader valve on the fuel rail to check for fuel pressure. We hated working on them, they were problem cars.

They don't go for a huge amount of money, personally I would sell, you have an mot stating exactly what the new owner needs to do, parts are dirt cheap, just some time welding it up. Will make a nice car when done. Doesn't need to be done to showroom, just enough to pass and mot. These videos do better im sure that the follow up track one would and so more revenue for new cars.

    Red Spider Mites
Tiny, bright red specks, about 1mm across, sometimes move into buildings in large numbers. There are two species with several names, generally known as Red Spider Mites. Although they do no direct harm inside the house, if the mites are squashed they stain walls and decorations.

I'm struggling to get my head around the fact that a mk2 Mondeo is now more than 25 years old and in danger of becoming a classic. My (then) girlfriends dad bought one of these new in the 90s and it feels like it was about a week ago 😮

Actually a very capable car all in all and a vastly more modern driving experience than the old Sierra, which I had at the time.

We learn something new every day, I had no idea they also made an ST24 in Mk2 flavor and thought that the ST24 was exclusively Mk1 and the ST200 was the only ST model on the Mk2.
The duratec V6 is a bulletproof engine, I own a Mk3 V6 currently and my previous Mk3 also had that engine.

One thing to check is the imrc is working by reving it and you will see the secondaries moving between the inlet if it isn’t working then removing the plastic panel on the front of the engine and under there is the imrc a sliver box
U can open it but make sure u hold the little motor down or you will destroy the cogs that’s if it works
    They come in at 3000rpm

@@tastyclassics An interesting and useless factoid. In the US between 1996-1999 we had a model called the Taurus SHO. It's engine was a ~3.4L 32v V8. It's fundamental design is based on the 2.5L V6 in your car, but with 8 cylinders. I think they even used the same windage tray in the crankcase as the 2.5L V6. It had that same IMRC box bolted to the front cam cover to open an extra set up butterfly valves at the base of the intake manifold just like other duratec V6's. Didn't make a lot of hp by today's standards, 235, but it would happily spin to 7000rpm and sounded very awesome doing so.

That switch in an inertia switch, basically a ball bearing, in the event of a crash, the bearing moves and breaks contact so turning off the fuel pump. A lot of cars have them under the bonnet.

Hiya Ben. You asked on here at 1.31 in which side was the fuel tank at. I'm sure you already know but if you look on the dash, where the fuel level indicator is, you'll see a little arrow that indicates which side the filler cap is. Works on plug in hybrids too to say what side fuel filler cap and electric charger is. I know the Mondeo has one as I had one like yours, only in white.. Maybe I've just given you a handy tip, or maybe not. Keep up the videos mate, they're great. Diolch.
