  • After the first will it run episode I got in contact with the previous owners of this rare Vanden Plas and they gave me the full story on how it became abandoned for 32 years in there garage, I then decided the right thing to do would be to get the car to a good driveable useable state and take it up to visit them - but I only had two weeks to do it!

Being a Southern guy from Georgia, I have to say it warms my soul to see an English guy with a beautiful Ford F 250 in the background, and learning so much about what you guys use to drive. Maybe that's why we fight so well together, we are cut from the same stock.

Meeting the family at the end made this video into so much more. Just wonderful to see and hear the memories. Reminds me of when PeteC took Swampy the MK3 Cortina back to the family of the original owner. Putting these old cars back on the road is worth while in itself, but adding the personal touch takes it to another level. Just wonderful to see her back on the road. Great job, lets hope she finds a good home in the future.

Refreshing to see that you don't have to restore a classic to within a inch of it's life to get it back on the road, inspiration for those who don't want to empty their bank account renovating an old car. Brilliant video too.

  • @andygj66

Absolutely loved this series. A Damask Red Allegro was my first ever car and I spent lots of time peering into the engine bay. The underneath shots brought back a lot of memories too. I can still remember where everything was!
The rust spots are in exactly the same place as mine and for its day, are remarkably few. Of all the Allegro's well publicised issues, rust wasn't really one of them. Most of the examples I clambered over in scrapyards in the mid-80's were pretty rust-free compared to the other vehicles rotting away beside them.
History has been unkind to the Allegro. It could and should have been a great car. As you've demonstrated, it does have some redeeming features. The late Harris Mann's original sketches show a much sleeker design to what finally emerged. Internal and external politics and poor management conspired to produce what we know today. It deserved better.

My brother in law owned an Austin Princess Vanden Plas, based on the Austin Cambridge, reg 69 ABU. This was around 1970, the car was a '63 I think, but the interior trim was absolutely sublime. Walnut dash, leather seats, the works! Very enjoyable video seeing this relic brought back to life! I owned an Alegro back in the 80s, never gave me a scrap of trouble, took me all over the UK!

This video brought back fond memories of a car I almost cherished it was a 1976 Ford Cortina 2000E. I Purchased the car locally for £760 it was a rough looking car in Sahara beige The front wings wasn't in the best state.. My Friend welded two new front wings (pattern) and I then one day set too doing the bodywork. I managed to find 3 large rattle cans of spray in Sahara beige it looked really nice when I finished and my dad said I should keep it, but I knew in my heart I wanted a newer car,
I bought a Ford Capri 2.0S In Stratos silver V875 TAB.
NOWADAYS I don't do much to my car collection I have two Astra convertibles one is Bertone in need of a restoration project in and nice shade of dark blue metallic over the weekend I saw an 04 Plate Bertone for spares or repairs my car really needs new rear bumper a bonnet driver door mirror casing and new boot lid plus my interior is looking dated and the 04 car has a lovely leather interior.my Other Astra is Twin top 1.9CDTI on 07 plate, in OK condition I only bought to sell on but I had a window switch issue and being nervous I took ages to fit it the car was a real bitch to start but once I percivered it started. I have used it few times on long runs its great on diesel.
My most recent purchase is a Jaguar 2001 Y registered 4.0 LWB Full leather it drives OK apart from the swinging interior mirror and unless I don't appreciate the car it will at some point need a couple of tyres but given I had Classic car insurance and chose 2000 miles I see no point in changing them till next year.
My Audi 07 2.7 TDI estate beautiful car I love it more than my Mercedes CLK convertible 320 on 52 plate.. But my Audi is high mileage at nearly 192.000 and my Ford Transit high top van is just 130.000.
I spent started spending on my cars as required and my van I did close to £1500 only to be offered a piss poor £3000 Yet I know my 14 plate van cleaned up nice and a few of its advisories removed should gain me well over £6500 so I don't like the idea of lining someone else's pocket with easy cash.. its not happening.
On the plus side I could easily earn £1200 a week in income doing deliveries.. And that may be my plan purely as a hobby towards my next new van..
This video was so cool it motivated me to do some jobs on my mentioned fleet
Alex Assets she's Allegro fan one never knows..it would go to a good home..

    Oh wow! Service data books!
I couldn’t have managed without those, before the internet took off and dial up modems were good enough to access the information you needed.
But it advanced and moved out of reach of people like me, so now I go to McDonalds with my laptop, eat far too many burgers and download whatever I need, using their wifi. It makes accessing data much slower than it ever used to be, but luckily, there’s not much serviceable stuff on modern cars. Timing? ECU does that. Idle speed? ECU. Fuel mixture? ECU. Plug gaps? Preset, and only changed every 60k, anyway. Tappets? Hydraulic.
Most cars at my end of the market are written off if they need a head gasket, so head bolt torques are no longer relevant. Even front wheel alignment is no longer make specific. Car testing centres require zero toe in for a pass, so that’s what everything gets set to. My most recent Autodata book goes up to 1991 and I haven’t needed to update it. I actually thought there wasn’t a newer one.
Whenever I eventually get back to work, I think I might specialise in older stuff, like what I learned on. I’m already out of date on the Canbus and Eobd stuff, despite having spent a fortune on stuff to work with it. Analogue stuff is far easier to understand, yet people who do understand it are a dying breed. It’s a niche I’m itching to fill.

I was circa 15 (1978), and my friends father purchased an alegro estate automatic brand new. He spent the first weekend fillling the gutter rails with sealant and undersealing it. He took it back a week later, as BL had omitted to fit the cotton-real type rubber bush on one of its shock absorbers...how could you miss that on assembly?? I also recall in my 4th year of my apprenticeship, in 1983, a gentleman at work had a non runner alegro VP. Quality interior and quality carpets. He couldn't give it away at the time. If only I had a barn, it'd be brimming with such cars (& motorcycles). You'd be working on them all 'till you retired. Another great video, many thanks for the memories and present day entertainment. 👍

She's a beauty - nice job. Had a very plain brown 1100 Allegro for my first car.

The perfect body shape to have been made a hatchback. An opportunity missed by the designers, It would have been nice to see the door repaired too, but hey ho. Radios 4 & 3, BBC Asian and 6 Music. Nice accompanying music! Great stuff as usual Ben!

Thanks for this wonderful Xmas fairy tale. The bearded prince saves a ragtag princess (yes I know it's not a 'princess') and takes her back to visit the long lost family. A nice real authentic project in contrast to 'the barn find Testarossa carefully dusted off with flour to make it look neglected for decades. I like Pole Barn Garage too but honestly can you imagine driving the 'Holey Goat' on the M1 without being stopped within 2 miles by 'your friend and helper'? Looking forward to more content on this channel.

Is it possible to become emotional watching a car restoration video?.....Yes is the answer! What an absolute gem of a car. I sat with a huge grin on my face and a tear or two in my eye looking at before and after. Well done 👍🏻 awesome stuff and a family meet too. More highs, lows, twists and turns than an episode of EastEnders! (Not that I watch that rubbish but you get what I mean) thank you for your dedication to this little beauty.
