- Sierra Ferrell graced the Gladden House Sessions on the second day of the Nelsonville Music Festival with her opulent, old-time spirit. Born amidst the rich musical influence of West Virginia, Sierra Ferrell combines her hometown honky-tonk roots with a fierce jazz and swing vitality, creating a sound that is all her own.
With an equal love for bluegrass, country, and '20s jazz, Ferrell combines the subtle melodies of folk music with whimsical ragtime to create a remarkable twang that has brought her a growing and devoted following. Since picking up the guitar at age 20, Ferrell has been hopping trains across the country. Now, after numerous bar gigs, local radio appearances, and small venue shows, she has been performing at festivals across the country, and has released two albums since 2018.
Sierra Ferrell began her enchanting performance with the yet-to-be-released “I’m Made Like That” followed by “Why’d Ya Do It” and ending with “Give It Time.” As an encore, she performed “Rosemary” from her 2019 album, "Washington by the Sea" (self released).

One hot summer night about 6 years ago or so, I was leaving the Wildhorse Saloon in downtown Nashville, lit a cigarette, and was frozen mid step by the most haunting and mesmerizing voice I had ever experienced. She was in a doorway leading to a closed shoppette, a man was playing along with her and another was either keeping time or sitting out, but I can't tell you any other details about THEM. All I know is that we locked eyes and I could have looked into that moment for eternity. We were immediately connected. We exchanged information, I grabbed a demo/mixtape, and we've stayed in touch. I've always told her that she is destined for greatness and that a voice such as hers will forever demand an audience. Seems I was right. Sierra, if you see this, I'm proud of you, and it seems that I'm not the only man (or woman) that has a chronic infatuation with you following the exact moment our eyes met lol. Notice how every single person there is silently taking in the sheer originality from every note she both plays and sings. I've heard of some trying to put her in a "jazz/swing" box but they're not listening close enough. If you really pay attention, you'll hear just how talented she truly is. One of a kind.

As good as the company of musicians are that play with her, anything other than her own guitar simply takes away from her ruby red voice. It's so original, filled with honesty and true intent. Some things just can't be faked and Sierra Ferrell is absolutely the real thing. I'd like to hear this solo set today in 2023.
I am amazed at how she inflects & mutes her phrasing to create vocal textures.

I'm with you! I'm old, but I KNOW that the music of my heydey is not the only good music. There's a shit-ton of excellent musicians out there now. You just have to stop the whining and start the looking.

Now that's an unexpected comparison. Voice-wise you canna compare them. Sierra's voice is melodious, and even sweet at times. You could never say that about Leadbelly's voice although it was an authoritative voice. Is it the guitar sound, particularly the lo , rich acoustic sound at the beginning that that puts you in mind of Leadbelly?
