This comment makes me want to cry. It perfectly summates what infuriates me about my fellow U.S. Americans (the monolingual ones) and other monolingual English speakers around the world. This "English-only" attitude is the reason why from high school on, I was determined to learn at least 5 languages, and I have surpassed that. Thank you for writing this comment. It's so true.

I've been in Paris for the past two weeks and everyone has been wonderful! Doing one's best to communicate in French goes a long way...so learn at least a little about the language and the cultural norms and you'll find that people are very accommodating. Mercis, Paris!

Being a native English speaker from the states, I feel it’s important for all tourist to try to learn at least the basics, _hello, goodbye, thank you, please, how much, where is the... and so on_ when visiting any country. But don’t expect for the citizens in the country you’re visiting to speak your native language. If they do, more power to them for learning another language, but definitely not to be expected.
I wish your people read the messages I know many gringos living for years in Costa Rica and still not understanding Pura Vida...The gringos specially never show interests in others countries languagues...
meanwhile some Europeans in less than a year learn the basics of the languages.

@@kobaltocr6927 …I’m not sure how it is today and guessing it varies greatly depending on the State and resources, but when I attended public education, Kindergarten - 12, we didn’t have a foreign language class until my 9th year of high school. That’s incredibly late to be learning a foreign language, especially when compared to European countries, which they start almost immediately in elementary school. If this is correct, European countries have almost 10 - 12 years of learning a foreign language. Here in the States, only two years of a foreign language was required. Two years is nothing, especially at that age, because there’s so many other things going on, that the interest to learn a foreign language is almost nonexistent. I did not have a fully committed interest in learning a foreign language until 2017. I wish they would of had foreign languages starting in elementary school, just to create an interest at such an early and impressible age, and then to have many years of training to build a foundation upon.
The other opportunity Europeans have, is they can travel just a few hours, and they’re in a different country with a different language. From Paris to Frankfurt is only 5 hours. It takes 5 1/2 hours just to travel the length of Wisconsin…and you’re still in Wisconsin. Europeans have face to face access to many different languages in every type of interaction, whereas here in the States, it’s English. Well technically, there’s a lot of other languages, but not readily available.
The only reason I’ve mentioned the above stuff, is that I wonder if the lack of exposure to foreign languages at an early age and the sheer size of the United States speaking mostly English, somehow creates a mental block, and maybe laziness in learning a foreign language? I really don’t know. But if I were to be living in a country with a different language, then I would do my best to learn the language, because it makes life easier and more enjoyable. All I do know, is that learning a foreign language is not easy, at least from my experience, but little by little each day.
By the way, thanks for the new word… *_pura vida_* = awesome. I haven’t stumbled across that word in Duolingo as of yet…and maybe they don’t even have it.

From my limited travel experience in France, I think it really boils down to knowing French. I am an international student here in France and knowing a bit of French will definitely help here. When I first came to France, I didn't know much French at all and I struggled quite a bit. Big cities like Paris or Nice are rather fine for people speaking English but in Dijon (where I am studying), I definitely faced the language barrier. I have been learning French for almost 6 months now and can only pick up a few words when a native is speaking. I still can't speak French enough to start hanging out with locals but I hope to at least be able to speak some French before my course finishes. I have noticed that if you attempt to speak even a little bit of broken French, the people here are very helpful and warm. They would go out of their way to help you out if they feel that you are trying to understand their culture.
I love France and I have visited on 3 occasions and generally I found people to be friendly towards me.

Mais je considère l'allemand comme ma deuxième langue maternelle parce je vis ici et je suis grondi ici. En réalité l'allemand pour moi c'est qc. entre première langue maternelle et étrangère.

I was in France with my mom in 2000 and we actually never experience rudeness from Parisians. We felt most welcome there. South of France was a mix bag though.

Wow. I have the opposite impression. Parisians have always seems more uptight and rude to me than people in the south. Warm weather generally means warmer disposition.
Moi, j'ai eu principalement des expériences positives. Les français valorisent beaucoup faire l'effort de parler la langue. Ça ouvre beaucoup les portes.
Je suis actuellement étudiante étrangère en France. Je trouve que c’est plutôt facile de voyager dans ce pays et la plupart de gens sont sympas avec moi. Cependant, c’est difficile pour moi de faire des amis avec mes camarades français. Ils sont un peu fermés et ils s’intéressent moins à rencontrer des étrangers que dans mon pays au moins

If you want to learn French, interact with people who don't know English or only a little bit. People who are relaxed with the language barrier! It's more fun and you'll definitely learn the language through conversations with them. Be light-hearted 💜

Bon vidéo!! Je suis d'accord avec Tony; il vaut mieux faire un effort de parler même un peu de français quand on voyage à l'hexagone.
En étant à Lyon pendant un an, ( j'avais appris français avant d'y arriver) les gens là-bas étaient super sympas et accueillants, j'étais vraiment content!
Comme idée pour un vidéo j'aimerais bien voir quelque chose sur les langues ou dialectes en France, c'est à dire: le breton l'alsacien l'occitan etc!☺

The stereotype I am familiar is not that the French don’t speak English well, most people I know wouldn’t expect somebody from a non English speaking country to speak English well or even at all. The stereotype I hear most often is that the French are veryparticular when it comes to people learning their language, and that they are harsh or critical. Actually the stereotype is that when you try to speak French in France some people talk to you in English instead, if you are not fluent in French. This makes people nervous to try to speak French
Just speak French in France and don't mind us being stupid. We are really good at being stupid, as in we have perfected it lol.

C'est très interessant d'entendre les points de vue des français sur cette topique, parce-que mes amis l'avons discutés souvent. J'ai trouvé que mes amis qui ne parlent pas du tout français ont une experience mauvaise quand ils voyagent en France, mais j'adore tellement voyager en France, même si mon français n'est pas parfait. Tous les français qui j'ai rencontré sont sympas quand je parle français, et même si un ami ne parle que quelques phrases en français, la réaction est plus mieux que quand quelqu'un ne parle qu'en anglais.

C'est ça le problème. Ça serait tellement mieux d'être sympa même si les autres ne peuvent pas parler Français...
It's just my opinion...there's definitely room for improvement when it comes to French hospitality.

@@ouichtan maybe they just feel uncomfortable when they have to speak English. And in touristic areas they're being to speak English pretty often.
I can generally read French. Listening and speaking, however, is a really difficult skill. When I travel to France I make an effort but then a lack of confidence holds me back from speaking more to people as I'm afraid of making a fool out of myself and saying the wrong things

on aime beaucoup les italiens .tres proche de culture mais de bonne humeur et le plus beau pays du monde avec de l art partout et une cuisine merveilleuse .j ai des gites et les italiens sont toujours gentils respectueux et polis

not at all , southern people are usually seen as fake and more hypocritical wheras northern people talk less but have a warm heart . In france bretons and extreme north people are seen as very nice (like the irish in europe) and people from the south have a reputation of liars and show off. the idea that southern people are warm is a cliché, they are just more expressive .

Quand j'étais petit, j'habitais en France, c'est à dire Mulhouse et Rixheim. Les français d' Alsace Lorraine, ils étaient un peu racistes contre moi et ma famille. Mais, le temps est passé, donc, j'espère que les français aujourd'hui ils ont changés.

Lorsque j’étais en France pour mon premier fois j’ai rencontré beaucoup de gens français certains ils ont parlent un peu d’anglais et certains ont parlent beaucoup d’anglais. En fait, j’ai rencontré seulement un gen, un bartender , il a parle très bien l’anglais comme un personne qui vien du un pais anglophone mais il jamais a alle à un pais anglophone vraiment!! Sorry for my grammar I’m still learning French !

Why do english speakers feel that everyone must know their language? They only know one language but they throw shade if others only know one too. I know english is the "commerce language" so I can understand if you expect it of business people but everyone in the country must know it??
Danny Shucksill yeah i know. Especially most of us Americans just don’t give a shit for language or anyone outside of the Anglophone world. and they get mad when other people don’t know English and travel to America but yet speak only English and are doing the exact same thing. It’s really idiotic.

Regarder ces videos est tres utile pour moi - nous avons appris un peu de francais a l'ecole, mais l'annee derniere nous devions choisir entres les matieres Chemie et Francais, et pour ma future j'ai du choisir Chemie, alors maintenant je suis en train de oublier tout le Francais que j'ai appris :D j'espere que je vais rappeler un peu de la langue en regardant ces videos. Du sprichst sehr gut Französisch,obwohl du dich für Chemie entschieden hast. Es ist immer eine gute Sache Sprachen zu lernen,besonders Französisch,das heutzutage eine wichtige Rolle einnimmt. Nach dem Brexit ist Französisch,die am meisten gesprochene Sprache der EU.

Ya soy consciente que es un país con mucha cultura y diversidad, con gente acogedora, y que hay áreas mas seguras que otras. De hecho veo que tú país es uno de los favoritos entre los "expats", así que resumirlo a la violencia de los carteles de droga me parece un grandísimo error. It is not possible to be nice to some people without talking to them. And in French it is not possible to keep things brief. Say as little as possible. I too face the same problem in India. People think i dont like them just because i dont say much. Or because my words are to the point. Thats all!

C'est ma langue maternelle mais malheureusement je suis en train de la perdre petit à petit vu que j'ai quitté la France il y a maintenant presque 10 ans. Mon épouse est écossaise donc l'anglais est devenu ma deuxième / première langue...
Je parle aussi Italien et Thaï et je suis actuellement en train d'apprendre le Chinois et le Japonais.

C’est exactement pourquoi j’ai déménagé en Allemagne. Pour pouvoir parler une lange étrangère touts les jours parce que trouve que ça est cool! See, maybe you thought about it before, but if you could add little comprehension exercises to the videos that'd be great. I think there'd be quite a big group of people who'd be willing to pay some money to be able to access them. Also I'm sorry if they're already out there somewhere, I'm a lazy bastard and didn't spend too much time looking for them :(((

Does anyone else feel that language teaching in the UK is much different than the rest of Europe? I've enrolled myself on an evening course in French and honestly I don't think I made any progress since I've joined (I've had some previous experience with French back in Poland, which was much better, only French in class, French definitions to words, etc.). I mean there's a big part in me not willing to do much for it, but the thing is we only speak English in the class, the teacher is super nice and won't scold you off for not doing shit and she honestly seems scared of having to tell someone to do something. I mean it might be just the uni I'm attending, but I feel like it'd have more or less the same effect on my French-speaking abilities if I spent this time at home actually going through French radio/TV programmes,EZ French etc. that going to 2 hours of evening class every week has. And before someone tells me that learning a language requires a lot of work at home, I know that, I've just been incredibly lazy and not really motivated by my tutor :)
You have to try different kinds of learning methods : French radio,TV,travelling in French speaking countries etc.

Parce que l' anglais c' est aujourd' hui la langue internationelle que le plus des gents parle, et ensuite elle est apprís dans tout le monde comme langue étrangere. moi, je pense que cą, c' est trés utile mais il faut savoir une autre langue aussi pour les Anglais ou les Americains. I just think that it is hypocritical for Americans or people from the UK or Australia to be mad at French people for not speaking English when they are in France. If it was the other way around and a French person just walked to up to a stranger in the United States and started speaking French to them they would completely blown off or even made fun of. Be respectful/humble and at least learn the basic words like Bonjour, merci, and au revoir

4:31, 4:41 Wie spricht man “je voulais” aus? Mir scheint, man spricht das ganz anders aus.
Man sprichts genau so aus wie er es auch gemacht hat haha :D Schau mal hier konjugator.reverso.net/konjugation-franzosisch.html hier kannst du jedes Verb konjugieren und ggf. aussprechen lassen. Die Aussprache ist ziemlich on point und hat mir als ich angefangen habe französisch zu lernen immens weitergeholfen
Beim zweiten je voulais verbindet er mehr das je mit voulais und sagt eher j‘voulais. Das Verb an sich spricht er zwei mal gleich aus.
Je voulais wird wie je voulé ausgesprochen. Also man spricht das -ais wie ein -é aus.

If I can be honest and offer my opinion without malice, I think the French can be pretty difficult. Of course its a mixed bag. I know some very very friendly French people. But most foreigners make contact with the French through services like restaurants and hotels. More often than in other countries the servers can be difficult. For me I have my restaurants that I frequent where they know me and where the service is fantastic. Also you need to find the right electrician , plumber etc. A lot of them are bad but when you find the right one they are as easy as anywhere else. On est bien accueilli surtout à Marseille. Les équipes d'entretien de voirie sont en première ligne pour assurer que les routes menant les gens en ville sont toujours propres, sans graffiti et mauvaises herbes, par exemple.
Les rats en centre-villes sont toujours bien nourris et coiffés et les poubelliers s'assurent que les bennes d'ordures sont vides et bien rangées - et ce partout dans la ville.
Les barbus et leurs moukères en burqa sont aussi toujours là pour s'assurer que vous passiez un agréable jeu de marelle (crachat/molards et crotte de chien/mégots) en centre ville aussi.

Mais ca c'est un peu étrange non... A être accueillant c'est à parler anglais? Est-ce donc que tout le monde et chaque pays faut parle anglais, et s'ils faites pas ca ils sont pas accueillantes? La seule concequence c'est donc que la culture imperialiste d'amerique va contrôler le monde entière, évidemment c'est pas une bonne idée et il faut que nous chercherons des autres alternatives pour la communication entre pays différents.

Non, il y a une différence. Non savoir pas anglais n'est pas problème mais la attitude à quelqu'un qui ne parle français.
L'espagnol et le français sont des bons alternatives. J'aime le français et l'espagnol plus que l'anglais.

I strongly feel that people of France are very self obsessed. Some of them are blind enough and feel that countries with big economies can't arrange healthy food . Like this fellow thinks and avoid Countries with culture different than theirs.

Comme É.U-américain, je trouve les français très accueillants et polis, et je trouve la perception aux États-unis que les français soient rudes, arrogants, et uniquement xénophobes, bizarre. La France est très accueillante aux touristes Anglophones (mais pas si comme en Catalogne); c'est juste que la culture là respecte les travailleurs de service et de transports comme professionnels et ne supporte pas l'abus d'eux. Je pense que beaucoup de touristes É.U-américains doivent réaliser que le style de vie détendu qui fait la France le pays le plus touristique du monde est très récent et fait possible par les « serveurs/serveuses arrogant•e•s », grèves ferroviaires, et émeutes qu'ils détestent.
Les touristes américains vont uniquement à Paris, et là- bas les gens ne sont pas tous vraiment sympas. Ils se ressemblent un peu finalement 😂 ils ne sont pas tous pareils, heureusement

Way, way, way too fast for anyone other than a completely fluent French speaker. I'm genuinely at an intermediate level and this was impossible to understand. It was even difficult to follow with the subtitles. To call it "Easy French" is an absurdity. I've unsubscribed.
I'm B level and I understood mostly everything. Definitely not "completely fluent." These people do speak somewhat more naturally in this episode though. You should study french phonetics.

Is your friend. Study schwa, elison, intontation, and stress mostly. That and learn some linking words. It is not important that you remember them, just keep a mental note and listen for them. Good luck.
