Question: What makes a watch expensive?
Answer: Desire...
That’s it!!!
Is it just me or does this dude look like Tom Holland in 10 years?
Cakesmite he looks like the last 2 Spider-Man’s combined
thankyou!
It’s Orlando Bloom.
Nah he kinda looks like a Teddy Baldassarre from like 3 years ago...
@Graciela Comisky You're right, nobody gives a flying fuck, obvious bot.
I was a welder while I was in college and I can tell you that 316 is not more expensive than 304 stainless. They are almost identical in properties (weldability, machinability, hardness, toughness, etc.) and price. The only more expensive varieties of stainless are the hardenable ones like 17-4 that are used for all sorts of strength critical applications. So I don't think that price is really much of a factor when it comes to stainless steel. At least in the 300 series
Casio FW-91 👍 $9 can t beat th Value ....
Right
Seriously same price as a #1 meal at McDonald’s
Hey Teddy! I went to school with you and just wanted to say that your videos are great! Glad to see that you’re killing it!
UD? Let's go! Thank you, man! So happy to hear you found the channel.
I'm currently at UD. I went to highschool and grade school with you but you probably wont remember. Anyways good to see that youre doing well!
@@TeddyBaldassarre Another fellow Flyer out here. Enjoy your videos, didn't know you went to UD. Keep up the hustle!
@@paulnguyen4495 I went to school with yo mama. She bought me a watch last night.

Teddy, another great video! Your passion about watches and to educate and inform comes through each time. I always learn something when I watch your videos. Thanks.
Great video! All of these distill down to an acronym I use - MMDM - Movement, Materials, Design and Marketing. Movement encompasses in-house vs off the shelf and levels of complication. Materials are pretty self explanitory and you covered nicely. Design covers the look and physical feel of the watch. Marketing covers all the intangibles - feelings about brand, history, celebrity endorsement, rarity, etc. Some folks care only about the first 3, others place more value on the last. YMMV.
Absolutely GREAT video. Very informative and excellent teaching delivery. Keep up the OUTSTANDING work.
Teddy I LOVE THIS INTRO!! It fits vibe of you and your vids so much better than the one with the drums if you ask me. But still, content is awesome dude, keep up the good stuff! 👌
Excellent job man, outstanding video, keep up the nice work
Best Value Watch - Omega Seamaster Professional 300m - iconic, durable, innovative, and beautiful.
@prnuvsharma55 - Yes, particularly the end of 90s one. Its list price was $1,700 but I bought mine for $1,075 in December of 2000 and it still looks and works like the day it was bought, which is to say perfectly. I do have more expensive watches which I rotate, but that nearly 24 years old one very frequently manages to squeeze itself in, disturbing the rotation order. 🙂
Teddy is the man. Great and interesting videos for someone like myself just getting into watches.
This was awesome. Love this channel.
Great video Teddy! 🙌🏽
Very informative, Teddy!
Great video Teddy very informative.
Hi just watch your show for the first time been collecting watches far a few years now I must say I think your shows are very good and will keep watching from now on keep up the good work cheers Bill from the uk
I love how well spoken you are!
Great video, keep the good work.
This video taught me a lot. Helpful now that I’m looking for a first luxury watch and am trying to discern true value vs marketing.
Great slideshow of gorgeous watches.
Great content Teddy.
Just getting into watches. Great video taught me a lot. Was wondering if you can make a video explaining all the information on the back of a watch?
This makes my morning even better!
Great Video Teddy...👍
I like your watch 101 series, seriously when i got into watches i wish these videos existed.
Great info💪💪
Very informative!.. Thank you!.. I'm trying to better appreciate watches, and this is a great resource!
Great topic, graphics and details. If you begin to run out of ideas, pocket watches have their small but viable niche. Good work!
Great video. 👍
Just found your channel and subbed.
Also thought you was great in Spiderman and the avengers!
Don't own it personally but think Orient Bambino is great value for money. Is absolutely beautiful!
I would agree there. Orient is one of the first brands that comes to mind when considering value.
I agree, I own 3 Orients and they all outperform their price point in design, finishing, and quality.
I just got a bambino a few weeks ago and I absolutely love it, definitely can recommend! I got the v2 with cream dial, silver applied Roman numeral indicies and the blue hands, gorgeous
Love my Bambino ... 2nd gen ver 2.
I have an Orient Bambino as well, in black, stunning in the light what I will say is that with the domed mineral glass, it scratches VERY easily. No-one notices it, but I notice it which is annoying. So be careful out there with door frames and wrestling on the ground with your cousins at Christmas guys...
It is a beautiful watch though, looks great with a button down shirt.
Thanks Tom Holland! Very informative!
Awesome video. I would like to see a factory make a watch from start to finish. Can you do a video on that? Thanks for sharing your videos. I always look forward to them. I hope you have a blessed week.
So comprehensive, Teddy - as always.
I picked up a F.P Journe Chronometre Bleu. Value is great because it hasn’t lost value yet. And it’s just a lot of fun meeting other watch enthusiast and watch shop owners who all want to take a closer look at the movement. Great buy if you can afford / find one.
Really enjoyed the vid, am late to the party but just can't go past an original Bulova Accutron Railroad and seem to be gravitating to collecting early electro mechanical watches.....and love the channel.
Oris In general offers great value for the money, especially the Aquis line
This was very informative for me.... I have a watch that will be launching in April ....
I think anything above 1000 dollars you are paying for the name....I understand that Heritage is important, but, a 700 dollar Tissot is a well-built watch with a great history. A 10,000 Rolex is a well-built watch with a Heritage as well. But the quality is similar, maybe slightly better than a Tissot. But is is over 10 times better?
The craftsmanship, materials used, and labor involved are all very noticeably more costly between a Rolex and Tissot, or even more apparent, a Grand Seiko and a Tissot, but in most cases not an order of magnitude more costly.
Luxury doesn’t work on a linear scale like that. It’s more like you pay 2x for 10% better, then 2x again for 10 percent better than that.
Tag Heuer is a perfect example. Compare their sub $1k watches to their high end. There is a difference in quality.
Maybe not, but a Tissot will not appreciate in value the way Rolex does.
A Louis Vuitton bag is just a bag. You'd be surprised how much money people will pay for a stupid bag.
Great video
I have a watch that I recently acquired that is priceless. In June of this year I reached a milestone of 45 years of service at my place of employment. I picked the Hamilton Khaki King as my service award, and I love it! I pretty much wear it everyday, too. Thanks for great videos, Teddy!
That's a very nice watch, though your company should appreciate you more - 45 years is mindboggling. They should get you an Omega at least ;) My own company recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. As one of few original employees working there from the start, I've received a Longines Conquest Automatic Black Dial as a gift. A great surprise, completely unexpected and the watch fits my taste perfectly as well.
Hamilton should be a 10 or 20 year gift. 45 years should definitely be a Grail watch.
@@ammarmar3628 Well, I retired last year, and I'm just grateful I have my IRA, a pension, my savings and my health. A Rolex Daytona would be nice, though!
love it!
Oris are the best for their price range !
I’d say that in general you are correct. I’m not a watch maker, but with few exceptions, in house movements all function the same as ETA. It is unusual for the industry to see ground breaking innovations like the Defy Lab Zenith has created with single-piece oscillator which takes the place of some 30+ components in a balance spring system. That is a unique case where an in house movement has significant advantages over an ETA.
Cheers
Capt. Mick
Love the new intro man, looks quite "premium". Also, you look 12 without the beard 😂
Hello Teddy. Can you make a video about Filippo Loreti? I want hear your opinion about that watch.
Most omegas are fantastic value, the history, the movements, the quality. All for half the price of a rolex
I couldn’t agree more
Concize, brilliant. Bravo.
That intro music is wonderful, seems like it was edited just like your first one 'cause I can't shazam it.
Hey Teddy , had a question, you’ve touched on the Bulova brand briefly in previous videos talking about certain aspects of them. However I’ve never seen you mention some of their really nice automatics, & I noticed you don’t own any. The automatics have a Japanese movement but they are still pretty accurate & the skeletons look amazing. Is it the case diameters of them that turns you off or is it something’s else?
Hey teddy. I just watched the movie “meg” and thought it would be really cool for you to go over all of the characters watches.
Amazing video Teddy ! Even for a french guy who don't understand everything ahah
Just a question, what's the Omega at 6.02?
Thank you my friend! The watch is an omega admiralty. Quite a rare watch omega made in the late 60s early 70s
the band you have at the 3 minute mark on that seiko with red dial. I WANT IT. you referred me to a website but they no longer carry it. do you?
I love the Britling Transocean day date and the Britling Colt Automatic.
Hey Teddy! What glasses do you have? They're looking spiffy.
TEDDY WITH THE DOPE INTRO
I love Orient. Quality on a budget. I have the Bambino and was saving for a Ray II
... yes, I need to save for a $150 watch if I want to get all my bills paid and stay out of debt; not flush like some of you fellas ;-) ...
but then I saw the Orient Triton. Holy Escapement Wheel Batman! That's a sweet watch! I think I have some new plans for my piggy!
Excellent video, Teddy! I used to question this myself until I did research on what makes a Rolex expensive, for example. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that they smelt their own gold in a Rolex-owned kiln, run in-house laboratories staffed by scientists and engineers who experiment with new materials, and essentially create everything in-house in a compound more highly fortified than Fort Knox. R&D isn't cheap and neither is paying for cutting-edge security technology. Needless to say, that research opened my eyes to the inner workings of what seems to be a living, breathing city of watchmaking.
Agreed Ryan. When you consider the overhead and the brand reputation Rolex has to maintain, its tougher than it sounds.
I don't know if I'm just stupid but I feel like I've already read this comment on one of Teddys videos a few weeks ago
@@tbcdef498 This is my first comment on this channel, but it's possible someone else shared the same info in the past! 👍
i used to only check the movement and the type of crystal used. but apparently, there are a lot of aspects to consider after all. i never knew about the stainless steel bit. had to take off my watch in the middle of the video just to check haha! this topic is very helpful for people doing some research prior to making a purchase.
Haha happy to help. I hope you found out good news about the steel of your watch 😂
@@TeddyBaldassarre so far so good! btw, i'm looking forward to the release of your strap line. hope you could ship worldwide :)
There’s also the deeper implied or perceived “value” behind factors you mention such as price, exclusivity and history. In the very early days of watches (pocket watches first...sundials before that) these were tools that gave a select group of humans godlike powers.
Having an accurate tool for measuring time when nobody else did would give you a strategic advantage as well as credibility. Such a tool was reserved for a king or general.
There’s also strong symbolism in trying to do the thing we can’t: control time itself.
...eventually pocket watches became wristwatches and they became mass produced. But the art of watchmaking didn’t simply stop, high end pieces continued to be developed. For those who could afford them they became a hobby as well as a symbol of wealth...in a way it’s an attempt to recapture the exclusivity of being one of the few people alive to own such a special tool that existed in the early days.
Companies try to make watches that give people that special feeling in different ways. Rolex uses gold, and literally uses a crown as a logo. They back it up with tough, reliable, accurate pieces. Patek and the like focus on movements, decoration and complications to capture the feeling of exclusivity. Certain master watchmakers produce 5 watches or less a year and sell them for millions a piece.
The “lesser” brand do 2 things. 1) try to offer more bang per buck than the high end companies or 2) simply copy the design of higher end watches. Not to be dismissive or oversimplify it- but most of these companies are just making watches that look like a Submariner or Calatrava 🤷🏻♂️ ...they’re still trying to tap into that special feeling, but for a much lower price.
I'll tell you something interesting about human behavior regarding watches. When I was 16 years old I was in juvy for a petty marijuana charge. While there we spent 23 hours a day alone in a cell on a block with about 20 other kids in their own cells. First thing I noticed was how precious it was to simply know the time. When we were let out I noticed some of the kids had cheap kids watches from Wal-Mart and I envied them. Turns out the way to get the watch was you had to be there for more than 3 weeks and become honor rank by completing various tests and displaying good behavior. You also gained the ability to use a radio and have one extra rec time. Needless to say I spent about a month inside and I worked hard to get that watch. And after I had it other kids on the block would constantly wake me up asking me what time it was. I was looked up to for just having the power of time.
Vacheron Constantin traditionelle small seconds is my favorite watch for value. Beautiful, simple, gold, hand wind, and can be gotten pre-owned at a good value.
Came here because a friend of mine is really into watches and just purchased some antique ones during an auction.
Before that, I knew watches could be expensive, but holly shit do people spend a lot on them.
So, I came here to try and understand what the big whoop with watches (I for one have a simple digital Casio, formerly owned by my dad in the 90's and a pocket watch that was inherited to me by a late relative), since I'm not into it and don't really know anything about them beyond "rolex are expensive".
But now I'm starting to see what people like about watches.
I don't think it is for me, but... The more you know.
Informative and very well done, Teddy! I am not a fan of many of their styles but I think that my simple black Ball Fireman is an example of an excellent quality watch with a great history that is frequently overlooked.
Citizen bullhead, I think it's an amazing looking watch going up in value. Could you do a bullhead video omega citizen ect
i think omega are a beautifully made watch ive bought my first watch and it is an omega and i am so happy with it infact i had the option to buy a rolex or an omega and i went with omega as they are a less hyped make of watch but they are the same quality as rolex
Great video! Just a little sidenote, you could have provided some extra information about plexiglass. The vintage Rolexes that use plexiglass weren't cheap I think ;)
I think that the Parnis GMT has a huge value for the money, at least in the specifications. I been wearing one for about 6 months. The only problem is that you will never have your money back, you need to think twice if you really like the watch before buying, because no one is going to buy a used Parnis.
Seiko and Timex watches are really good value for money in my opinion. On the higher end Rolex watches have amazing value. Really informative video man..
Amazing channel Bro!! I'm a creative director and you have impressed me... Keep up!
I agree! I love my TISSOT watch.
Hey teddy I have recently started a channel on watches do you have any advice on growing
Great Vid 👍🇨🇦🍺🍺
I like Oris for the money. Great quality, great company, very nice timepieces.
Hamilton Khaki Field handwind is my daily. You get a robust field watch with an ETA mechanical movement, sapphire crystal, and excellent attention to detail, with huge history behind it, and the price tag is barely $300
For me the "musts" are 1) sapphire or hardlex 2) stainless 316L , Titanium, or solid gold case 3) Japanese, Swizz, German quartz or automatic 4) 3 atm water resistance for a dress watch and 10+ for sports watch 5) comes with a quality bracelet or strap. Examples: Seiko SARB033 and 035, Tissot day/date automatic, Phoibos PY007 Dive Watch. I don't like getting a watch that costs about $500 and the bracelet has hollow end links and a pressed clasp, for example.
I would admit Invicta is my favorite for quality and durability. For what they cost the price and quality can't be beat. I've got a quartz pro diver that I've abused still no cracks or scratches on the crystal. I've only had 2 batteries in 8 years of owning it.
the rest of them tho
I love Tissot and Seiko. Beautiful, crafty and relatively affordable
For the money, i find the timex weekender and the seiko snk800 line pretty hard to beat
I have a Longines Conquest Automatic 300m which I think is really great value for money. It retails for around $1000 and is as accurate as any of the Rolex watches out there.
Bulova precisionist is hard to beat at $300 with diamond hour Mark's and a smoothe sweeping second hand that never ticks and as a diver watch it has to be very versatile
Best watch in terms of value for the money... Any Grand Seiko.
what value does movement bring you
@Magister Ludi Indeed, but i answered reffering to the best you can get for what you pay in the moment of the purcharse. regards
@Magister Ludi why should depreciation matter to you if you want a watch. The fact that they cost less used would mean you can then get one at a crazy steal. And if you're a watch lover, you'd have that watch for years, without every intending to sell it. If you want a watch that super well made and very accurate for an affordable price what can beat Grand Seiko? If you have to use you're life's saving to buy a Rolex, and need to eventually sell it down the line, maybe you shouldn't be buying a Rolex, because you probably can't afford it. Buy what you can afford, a watch at the end of the day is not an investment, but a waste of money. They're for people with disposable income to "dispose" of they extra money, it's a toy for men kind of how we waste money on cars and clothes. You should buy them because you like them and not intended to get money back from them. So a GS should the best choice for most people when it comes to buying the best watch for the smallest amount of money possible when spending multi-thousands of dollars for a watch.
@Magister Ludi you can buy a GS spring drive for under 5 grand, and 3.5k when they're on sale, which they do go on, during the new year, even cheaper used. All watches depreciate, you can point out a fee that are hot right now, but why are you buying a watch just to own for less than a year. I buy my watches to have for life. And if you're talking about cost of service, you should know that servicing a watch is kind of a scam. Watch makers know that you can easily go 20 plus year before they need to be serviced I'd it's a high end watch. I think GS says you don't need to get them serviced for almost a person's lifetime/a crazy long time like 15-20 years. But to service a Rolex it's like 500-1000 nowadays anyways. So you'll be spending a lot for either servicing. But in the way of cars, all cars lose their value(to point out the super rare occasions where the value goes up is a stupid way of looking at the market) [it's mainly for vintage or limited editions, which doesn't really apply for watches much, as watches are always limited editions]. But the purpose was to point out that you're losing money buying technology/mechanical tools. The difference would also be that you would only ever need to buy one car, as a good watch will last you're entire lifetime. So if I was to buy a car, I wouldn't care how much of its value it retains because I'd drive it and it'd still get me to where I need to go, be reliable and still look aesthetically pleasing as the day I got it. That all that should matter, if you like it, you can afford it, and you plan on having it for a super long time. Value retention and servicing cost should be the last thing you consider when buying a watch, if that's what you have to think about when buying it, then you probably shouldn't be buying that watch; because one, you can't really afford it. Or that's not really the watch you want to get, if you plan of selling it later, and buy the real watch you want. After having a GS, I know that I don't want or need anything else; And if I do want some other watch, I'm not going to sell off my GS to pay for the other one. I'll just buy it and keep it to go along with the GS.
almost any japanese watch brand is excellent in terms of value for the money
I think limited editions are good for the market. It makes the watch collecting more interesting and will force the consumer to do more research before buying next watch. Also less known companies can increase their value.
Hey, Teddy, I'm a high schooler and I am planning to buy a watch should I buy a battery powered watch or a more expensive mechanical watch
you have been logical and flexible with your thoughts take on cheap watches, brand name, heritage and people's personal opinions. I like it. (I think your girlfriend being in the field of fashion might have helped)
What makes a expensive watch:
- Case material
- Glass material
- Movement
Entirely wrong. Here are examples: you designed the watch and ordered pre-made parts from different factories in China, ETA or Miyota movement and just put them together. That's almost as cheap as it gets.
You make cases and dials, but outsource the movement like Miyota or ETA. Same materials, but that'd be a bit more expensive.
You make entire watch with your own in-house movement at your factory. Still same materials, but the price will go 6-digit easily if not more. That is almost exactly what Richard Mille does btw.
Now imagine you make not only one, but have a production line to make 50 000 watches a year. Then the cost of all equipment and its maintenance, factory rent, employee salary, profit etc. from one watch you can divide by 50 000. And bring your product to the customer for a reasonable price. That's what most brands do. It's called economy of scale.
That's the main reason why some watches are extremely expensive. And why you have GS at such high quality for such a low price.
@@smashexentertainment676 so I wasn’t entirely wrong it all comes down to the materials lol
I like Davosa watches. Quality build, components, great design (sure, some are homage) and great value for money. I cannot fault them.
Casio F-91W, bought mine for about 9$ and it's about 0,5 second faster each week compared to atomic time. That is precision you won't find in most automatic watches for 100-1000 times more. And If I had money I would buy one of A. Lange & Söhne as they are beatiful watches, put on my left wrist, and F91-W would be on my right to check time.
Hi Teddy
Which first watch would you recommend for £5k
If one compares two different watches with two identical movements ( ETA 2824 or ETA 2892 for instance ) one will see a very large price difference. A Muhle Glashutte ( with a base 2824 ) will be more than TWICE as much as a similar Zeno Watch Basel ( with a base 2824 ).
The main reason certain watches are as expensive as they are is PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO PAY THE ASKING PRICE! ( If no one was willing to buy a Rolex, the price would come down and become more reasonable! )
Another reason watches are expensive is the due to the labor laws of certain countries. A worker in Germany or Switzerland is going to make more money and have more benefits than a worker in Russia - thus raising the final price of the watch.
Mühle glashütte actually changes parts in the movements
Does anyone know the model/reference number for the Omega shown at 5:14 and 6:00?
Look up omega Geneve and find the right one. Cheers!
My Seagull d819.459. I consider it to be a good value for money - elegant, nice looking watch, ss case, a sapphire crystal, good movement ST2130 (ETA 2824-2 clone) for under 200 US dollars shipped! My copy runs +2 sec/day.
Having Spider-Man explaining watch prices to me is something quite exotic.
The Ocean Star from Mido. They makes an affordable but genuine Automatic Swiss watch. I have four of their models, one is a chronograph.
What was that red seiko you showed?
Material and build quality value or value in terms of watch grows in worth for selling later? Where come in the differences?
I just brought a fucda watch because i loved the minimalist dial. Made out of stainless steel and water resistant. It has a thick rubber strap that is great looking. It is quartz but looks great. It only cost 10 dollars !!
My pick would be a combo of Timex and Seiko. You can get a full set: beater, every day, chrono, sporty, diver and dress for less then a $1K
What do you think of the Concord C1 line?
