  • Using the opportunity of having both of these in hand to highlight some of the differences between Adventure and MX boots. I think at the end of the day, gear compatibility and desire for a membrane will drive a lot of your choice - because as I go in to, the protection and comfort part really comes down to the MX boot in the end.

    Great review! I have some TCX Jupiter boots which I love when I’m just riding around casually and running errands and such. As an above ankle boot they don’t offer the protection of a full boot obviously. I wear my MX boots (Alpinestars Tech 5) when I do trail or dirt riding…..just lots more protection without many downsides as u so nicely presented. I’d only consider adventure boots if I was doing long trips where rain might be an issue and I was doing dirt at times.

    I have a big GS and do basically all road riding, sometimes down to 40F. I think I'll go with the Dakars! I'd been riding with literally just Redwing workboots for the last decade, 914s, so the Dakars will be drastically better protection. Based on reviews it doesn't look like I'm giving up much in comfort, possibly even gaining, at least while on the bike. Probably going to have to start swapping to crocs or something when I get off to walk though.
    I've considered sport touring boots but it almost feels like I'd be better off with another pair of redwings since I can at least hike comfortably in the redwings.

    • @cblais19
      @cblais19  3 года назад +1

      A good question! The Fastback does have a bit roomier of a fit, I forgot to show that - those plastic reinforcements result in a couple mm higher toe box and there’s also a bit more room in the heel.
      The Dakar does have internal padding, but not as much because of that Goretex membrane, plus you don’t have to worry about padding hard plastic!

      I think boots like the Dakar / Sidi Adventures / etc are great if you’re mainly sport touring on your adv like a lot of people are, with an occasional gravel road. MX boots are really limiting on gear choices and the like due to the height and bulk.
      I’m probably served well by a Dakar with my riding, except that I do a lot of 2up and the rigidity and support of the MX boot is nice with all that extra weight up too.

    Wearing MX boots on the street is the equiv to wearning a full leather race suit to ride to the grocery store. Even "adventure" riding isn't comparable to MX/SX. What a MX boot must endure on every ride is significantly different than riding a 1250GS down a jeep road. I started on MX 25 years ago and still remember what it is like trying to walk around in MX boots.

    Hi Chris - For long touring on highways with approx 15% Offroading, which one do you suggest? I was more inclined towards Dakar, until I started reading more about Fastback enduro. Perhaps lack of goretex is one negative for Fastback. But how comfortable are they to walk around during touring?

    • @cblais19
      @cblais19  2 года назад

      Fastbacks are unexpectedly comfortable to walk around in, with the caveat that you do have quite large boots clamped to your legs. I found them significantly nicer then something like a Crossfire, and much less squeaky.
      If you're doing nothing more than some light gravel roads and mainly on-road touring in all weather, I can see the Dakar being your preference though. It feels more like a nice pair of hiking boots with additional ankle support and has that nice Goretex security as you note. I did find the extra bracing of the Fastback really nice on my Africa Twin when riding two up, gave a lot more security at stops with a tall bike and extra weight - but that might not be a concern fr you!

So offroading capabilities are also limited... but for the interceptor 650, not sure Fastback would be very comfortable/suitable in the long run given its structure and lack of goretex.
