If you never try something new, you never learn. One of the best things about this channel over the years has been your willingness to learn and to show us that process. Way to go! Lots of hard work, Al, and it was great to see your extended family helping out.
So much fun watching the progress on the new Homestead! I could watch you'll all day!
Put a screen or grate over the end of the overflow to keep critters from crawling up in the pipe, falling into the tank and drowning.
X2
I always remember when Heath from Red Poppy Ranch found a dead mouse in his well. He adds bleach to his reservoirs on a regular basis ever since. Plus, they always say that you can never know, when there is a dead rotting corps of an animal laying across across the water, upsteam somewhere.
@Iron *Fe* I have on more than one occasion commented GRAVEL lots and lots of gravel needed. On the property there should be somewhere to dig gravel
@@johnhenson7434 or just have a few truck loads delivered and have it handy as he does projects over the next few years. Easy and clean aggregate.
@@brenda9140 my dad would do that every summer when we first went to camp. Never had any issues with ours.
I'm thinking you should have put a more solid base under your tank. (Rock/Gravel/etc).
When it's "FULL" of water it's going to settle more and maybe break that valve fitting/water line
I agree with you 100% on that !
When the time comes for using that water source for the animals might test it for any giardia parasites....suggestion.
Lol…..they’re animals, not humans.
Giardia can infect goats cows dogs and cats plus people of course I would think more an issue by beaver pond because they can have as well
@@frenchysandi that is very correct. Our grandpuppy took over a year to get well from his infection.
He needs to test it monthly, if hes going to do it, could pass inside eggs and milk research is a big plus
Would be best of gardens
You need to turn the bucket on the excavator down when done for day. That way it will not fill with water and rust.
Al!! You be careful getting down in holes where you’ve just excavated! One of the best Oncology Doctors I ever knew died that very way on his farm!! From a hole collapse!! PLEASE BE CAREFUL!! We love you buddy!
What he should ( and it is required in many places,) is to make a stepdown about 12-18 inches deep from ground level, and about as wide to keep the edges from caving in.
Good Morning, Lumnahs & all you viewers! Hope everybody has a wonderful weekend. The water system is looking really good. I hope you have good water flow at the hydrants. I guess we’ll know on Tuesday. Everybody stay safe & healthy.
Blessings, Love & Hugs from Vicki in Ft. Worth, Texas 🇺🇸👍❤️🥰🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Howdy Vicki and hope you and yours also stay safe and healthy!
AM HOME Home from VA hospital .My wife Sherry and one of my Grandsons picked me up from Ann Arbor Mi and I had a chance to checkout more of our new Farmstead, We got a cancelation from our local butcher shop and will take 1 steer in Monday, My health is better now and we are gonna finish unpacking and doing some more planting in our late July garden. We will start making more videos for you all to see. Thanks for Sharing your great videos
Hi Al, Shouldn’t the tank be placed onto a bed of stone for drainage and to prevent shifting? If that tank shifts over the winter it will snap off your exit pipe.
It's probably below the frostline. But I would do it anyway. I live in Alaska and yeah, gravel would be necessary.
This has been mentioned in several previous posts including that the pipe should be bedded on sand then covered with sand.
I thought sand, stone may puncture it...
@@jackd.ripper7613 frost line in his area is likely 4’
Very nice to see 2 brothers working together!
Al it's nice to see family come out and help
Go go, BobKITTEN, go! I'm so glad you got that project checked off your list. Looking forward to the next one! Blessings to all.
Good morning from Victoria Australia..(in our 5th lockdown,)..loved this episode...didnt want it to finish..looking forward to many more espisodes.👍
What an amazing job you did and such patience to see it to the end. Grace & Blessings to your family.
Al, did you cover the ends of that pipe going in and coming out with screen wire or something to stop rats, frogs, snakes etc going in and dying in the water and contaminate it....
How about a filter on the overflow to stop frogs getting up the pipe?
Lots of experts here Al !!! Thanks for another video of the day in the life of Lumnah Acres !!! Cannot wait to see it grow !!!
So nice to see more of the family, Al!
Good content. You don’t need to talk throughout your videos. The explanation at the end was perfect. Nice to see other people in your videos for a change. It was nice of your brother to help you. You didn’t say his name, nor the kids.
Nice job!! Everything looking great!! Grass coming in nicely!! Stay blessed!!
Well Al, you have several very valid suggestions regarding your water tank and piping. I agree with most all of them. Especially the movement of soil with your seasonal temp shifts. Good job and it should be interesting to see just how effective it is at providing gravity fed water to the two faucets.
Good morning All 🇮🇪👨🌾 and have a productive weekend !
Good morning Ger
Gooooood morning
Howdy Ger - same sentiment to you as well!
Good morning Ger! I hope you are having a great weekend!
Good morning!
Just look at that pasture! The rain has been more helpful than hurtful. Hi to you all from "Anne land", Prince Edward Island, Canada!
The danger aof backfilling all at once is that the compacting can shear off a pipe if it is through a sharp hole. Of forcing a clamp to come off. The safe way is to backfill up to the pipe and as it compacts (over days or weeks) the gradual tempo will minimize stress on pipes and fittings
Backfill with gravel where all the fittings are.
Great project and crew. Remember that nothing is a failure if it teaches you a lessen. The IBC tote might have worked it you re-enforced the cage with plywood or planks but I think the the new tank is a huge upgrade that you will be very happy with. As a homestead site I am sure that you will find a ton of uses for that container. The simplicity of the process is pure genius. Now, you just need to install a mini water power generator at the bottom of the hill to generate electricity as well and you are all set. I love to play in water so I think I would be making you collection pool a little bigger and making it a mini spinning hole and who does like playing with rocks and making your own dam. A few rocks at you overflow site and it’s a great place to have your little garden paradise. Thanks for sharing and glad to see some of your extended family.
Pretty sure I wouldn’t cover anything until I knew it was going to work for sure
I was thinking the exact same thing!
@@leannekenyoung same here
@@davelawson2564 Thats a Great thought, but Al's stubborn and hard headed...
you could have run the overflow back in to the stream, this may reduce the icing up in the winter....We grew up with a spring house, all of our water came from there. You can filter and pressurize as needed.
glad you explained why you installed the overflow. I did not think of that reasoning. Good job !!!!!
That was interesting to watch, Al. You’re pretty dang smart and great with the backhoe! Looking forward to the next video. Progress!!! Thanks for sharing.
Looking great!! Just like one other person mentioned…put a grate on the end of your outflow to prevent unwanted critters from going in and drowning could prove devastating to any who drink from it and could take a long to identify as the source. Wishing you the very best !! Also before you cover over much more of your piping id be certain it works from end to end! Could save a lot of time re-digging otherwise. Peace and blessings to you and your lovely family.🥰🙏🏻🇨🇦
It's water for animals not humans!!! as stated in video.
Whoa that grass has taken off! It looks beautiful!
It was wonderful seeing your family help you with the install! Loved seeing the kids. Great to see you get this installed!
❤&🙏 🙋
Hi Al I have a certificate III in surface extraction I would put lots of med/rock one foot thick under the tank or it will sink in wet ground when full..
have been a (long-time subscriber) on your channel and written many comments
Too late.
aaaa he will fix it up in the spring...
Good morning from south Alabama that's a cool system and can't wait to see it working. It's nice to have a way of watering animals with no power if power goes out.
Keep up the good work and God bless you all
Gooooood Morning Al , Gina & Olivia ,
Al , I would say that you are beyond the IBC tote level now. Now you are into the tank level. Wow ! It sure seemed to fill up fast !
You have a few flowing brooks and creeks. With ram pumps you could have water lines going every where on your farm and not just to the homestead area. Running water at the cabin ? If you do not trust the water , you could always boil it for 15 minutes. And then put the water into storage containers for drinking.
You have no idea how helpful your videos are. I wouldn't know how to get past scratching my head without your time and effort put on video. Thank you so much! And Happy New Year!
Well I'm not a skeptic but am on this one and going to learn something new. Water is self-leveling and one of the best ways to get elevation across land is with water in a hose. In my estimation when your tank is full that is as far as the water will rise in your hydrants unless the tank is higher than your hydrants or you have pressure of some sort on the water. I'm watching with an anxiousness to learn something... 😆
You should take a sample of water when it's settles and get it tested to see how good it is in New York state we drink spring water all the time
Mornnnnning Lumnahs!!!!
The grass at the off Grid Homestead is looking Awesome 👏
Howdy CC!
Gooooood morning
First things I noticed looked really nice!
@@bobestremera8216 it sure does, nice and green and pretty soon they’ll have a thick pretty pasture. I just wonder how many deer 🦌 are grazing on that tender new grass when no one is around? 😂

Impressive work fantastic idea water source
What a blessing to have some help & I hope all your work is blessed forever 🙏💖
Good morning my amazing friends
Your brother looks like your twin Al resemblance is remarkable Watching as always from Neath Wales UK
I was watching you guys build that dam and I said where are the BEAVERS !!!
I'm sure they'd be happy to lend a paw!
My very thought also....but then I thought, Al doesn't want beavers damming up any part of this stream. LOL
@@samvalentine3206 LOL 😂 😂 😂
Yeah!.. Where are those dam beavers when you need them!.
don't forget to put up some form of shielding to prevent animals peeing and pooping over the inlet pipe area...John Sargeant from England.
The inlet area should be filled with 3/4” washed gravel to just above the inlet, then covered with pond liner, then covered with a small layer of gravel and topped with a lot of large rocks. Thjs will protect it longterm from a LOT of potential issues and erosion.
I had Already started this. Maybe in the next video?
first thing i noticed was the grass is doing great. good to have the rain to keep it growing and have to say y’all did a great job with that. looks like the water supply will work good actually courious to see what kind of pressure you are going to have. anyway thanks for bringing us along stay safe and see you next time
Al, you are one crazy guy in a good way. Gina may agree. Why you always make our day!
Gina I hope you know that he is amazing. Plumbing, framing, Roofing, electrical, this man has it all! I had to teach my man how to change a smoke detector!
Good video!!! Gotta love seeing families working together,
Oh look at all the green! Your grass looks amazing. Watching you build your new property is so cool. Thank you for sharing such a amazing journey. This IS special, starting from scratch to the future finished property is gonna be a wonderful watch for me ( and many others) living vicariously thru you guys is fun.
The addition of the nephew makes this the "Uncle Al Show".
Nephews, there were 2 in video.
I remember watching the Uncle Al Show!
Gooood Morning, Al, Gina, and Olivia. And to my RUclips friends. My thoughts on this project, would be to add some kind of heating element within the tank it self so that when the temperature drops below freezing, it would automatically go on. Although that is a large water storage unit, due to possibility of bad years of draught, like western United States, I would have purchased double that size tank. Too many things going on with our weather patterns. At this point, perhaps yet another system at another location on the property would give you extra security. Especially since you have more streams you can access. G-D Bless
Howdy Angels! Hang in there!
Can’t wait to see this system. You are doing good work.
Who is your helper? This new setup look like it will work like a dream. Good work, as always.
Good Saturday mornin New Ham Shire .... lots'o mud to play in ~8^) Have a nice weekend AL, Gina & Olivia + brother and nephew ... take care.
Keep that IBC. It will make an awesome worm bin so you can have all the worm castings and worm tea for your garden you need.
Nothing like free water, Looks like it will work good for you
Good morning from Siesta Key Florida
Can you protect the water source by building a spring house over it, then pipe water to the buried tank? You would, very likely, have a human-drinkable supply. 🚰
Good job on your second attempt for the water tote. You do good work even you have no background knowledge but you'll get it done good job👍👍👍💪💪🙏🙏🙏
Nice job team, may it flow clean and clear for many many years 👌 👍
Wow! Lots of work but it was nice to have your brother help you!! Good Job and God Bless!!! 💕😊❤⚘
Without a screen over the overflow pipe, you have just created a giant rat trap. Also put another collar on the tote to get the lid out of the ground further or the dirt will splash up and foul the threads.

Thanks for introducing your brother. Nice to have some added strength when needed. Looking forward to seeing the next step. Blessings
Looking good. Good to have lots of interested helping hands, too. God bless.
Loving that lush green grass!
I’m enjoying the process of homesteading from the beginning …buying the land….clearing t he land….now water source for animals, vegetables, and humans….I wonder if Al has a guide book he is following, making sure everything is done in a timely manner….Isn’t this family a joy to follow, they make it seem possible for the average person….
You water system is looking great, so glad you got some extra help, that way things moved faster to beat any upcoming rain 😊! I'm looking forward to seeing the next video 📹! 😊👍💕💕💕
have we met the brother and nephew before? nice that he lives close enough to make the trip.
Should put a little gravel around that hole entrance hole in your tank so when you open it up you don't get dirt in it
Learning something new everyday. Thanks for the upload. 😊❤️
Good Morning Everybody from Enniskillen, Ireland.
Morning, ☕️
Howdy Earl Grimes!
Good morning Tony
Gooooood morning Tony how’s the weather been in Ireland
Good morning Tony! 🌅👍🏻
Ingenious.. really works well .
I think you have a good system. I think it should work great. Romans used much less fall per distance ratio and had amazing pressure for fountains and things. Some still run today
How exciting! Can’t wait to see it working! 🤗
Morning AL and family, greetings from down under. AL, do a bit of research on ram pumps. If you have a bit of gradient on your land you may be able to increase the height of your tank.
Made the same comment but on reflection I think the winter freezing temp's might put that to rest.
Who cares when the job is done this well,
Gmorning Lumnahs. Excellent decision using that free water source. Have a great weekend.
Grass looks great you'll be mowing soon.
I look forward to your post in the morning. Blessing to you and yours
Good morning! The place is looking so green and beautiful!
Looking great. Hope everything turns out good.
From what I can see it doesn't look like the outlet of the tank is higher than the outlet of the hydrants, doesn't look like the water would come out of the hydrants. Hope I'm wrong as you have sure done a lot of work.
Same thing I've been thinking. Hopefully the grade is deceiving in the videos.
We distill our well water and run it through an activated charcoal filter before consuming it or giving it to our animals as a precaution. You might consider using a tbsp of vinegar in your animal water to keep any parasites and bacteria down. It’s super easy to make. It’s really simple to do. When we change our chickens’ water we just put a cap full in the waterer (we use hanging waterers with nipples so the water stays clean in the coop) and swish it about to clean the sides and bottom, dump it out, then fill with clean water.
Amazing. Looked like fun. Take care.
Congratulations you did it.
Good Morning all from Tasmania, Australia 🇦🇺

Good morning and good night aswell from U.S.A
Great work. You always review and try again. Brilliant work
Your grass is looking beautiful
Great job, very happy you got the new tank in wo any problems. Congrats
Enjoyed this video tremendously!!!
Much better than the IBC. If you have any issues getting the water to clear up, try putting some flocculent in the tank, it will make everything drop and settle. It is non toxic.
From Australia.
Gina start collecting small rocks and line the whole creek to make it look nice and remember to get Al to dig another hole for swimming
That is freakin amazing! I’d never have thought of that! 🙌🏼
Well done Al! 👍😁
