here is a thought. build a small coffer dam around the drain pipe. the water could rise and then flow over the dam to exit the existing pipe. you could also us a couple of 45 elbows to raise the pipes inlet.
Nice to see you building again.

If you want a deeper larger pond, good reason to proceed. Might consider adding a step down from the pilings to the walk way. If any of your family or friends visiting have any physical challenges you could ramp the transition vs step down to give access to all. Pond seems pretty happy at it's level...sometimes simple ideas like an extra foot of water opens up flood gates (no pun intended) :D not a homesteader, but enjoy all your family shares about your journey. God bless all of you as you transition one one home to the next....Jim

One piece of advise on the equipment that has hydraulic cylinders. Try to leave the cylinder ram retracted as far as you can to keep them protected from the weather. Even though the rods are hard chromed, they can still rust and that will destroy the seals and cause hydraulic leaks which can be expensive to repair or replace.

    • @sonnyblack9905
      @sonnyblack9905 3 года назад +9

yep totally agree on this i was a hydraulic repairman for 40+ years with the Government, changed many a set of seals due to the rams corroding. when you grease you unit put a light coat of grease on the cylinders this will help protect them.

Not code unless you get the lumber dried and graded for a house. However you can use ungraded for outbuildings and barns so it would be wise in the end. Just have to buy framing lumber for any place that is used for human housing.

JudithB Well, never built a dock, but I think 2 barrels on the end, or 3 barrels as wings was a good idea! I would add a swimming ladder on the end too. Boat cleats for the kayaks too. I would be fencing pastures, getting pipe corners cemented in, and road built to house site instead of toys.

PVC pipe driven into the pond bottom will allow the dock to move up and down, but offer stability as well when you mount sleeves to the dock in which to put the pipe. We did a floating dock in Wisconsin shaped like a T that way, but allowed us to retrieve it in the winter as well. You may adjust with filling the barrels with some water too, trying the height of the dock.

  • @hardwareshomestead8959

Al, when I lived in NJ, I used to repair the docks at my marina. We found that barrels weren’t stable enough. We used styrofoam that measured about 10”x10” and I think they were about 8-10 feet long. Since they were flat, the docks were pretty sturdy. I’m guessing that you will start the house maybe next year? If you lived down here, you’d have beautiful weather all year long. I sometimes miss the 4 seasons.

Al: Great start on your new dock! I'm not sure that just one barrel will be enough support if you have more than just a couple of people on it at the same time. One way to achieve several benefits would be to consider adding a Tee-piece (of similar dimensions as your original) across the outer edge of the dock and add a couple of barrels under it for extra flotation support. This will not only increase the dock's stability, it would provide more casting space when several people want to fish at the same time. If visiting kids want a place to jump or dive off, you've met that need too. Just a thought for you to consider.

    GOOD MORNING!!!
GINA, the one we had grow up was a bit wide and the approach was little more stable due to large post that was on walkway buried in ground to stabilize the approaching the floating pond deck we had a latter to use at the end so climb in and out, we didn’t like the walking in the mud. The post was left tall & a short post was just attached to the deck not ground so we had a little railing to hold onto thin we was on floating deck. We had two very large ponds the one with deck was 40ty feet deep and other one was deeper than that spring feed we did most fishing was at the pond without the deck. The ponds were divided by one lane dirt road, the upper pond could drain into the lower pond, the depth of ponds was done by divers. Have fun we did growing up we never worried about falling in we, had our latter to climb out, if you walked out the pond, would be over our heads so fast but due to mud we didn’t walk out unless we had to. May God Bless You…

I like your dock. Reminds me of a raft we had as kids. It lasted for years.

Brilliant idea with the floating dock! Looking good so far. The walkway part of the dock I think will stabilize when you attach the 8x8 ft dock platform. If not, use two barrels lengthways beside each other at the walkway end. Connect walkway and platform with a hinge. To prevent sideways movement you could drive down say 2.5" pipes on either side of the walkway into the pond bottom.

I made a 3 section dock on Lake Blasdale in Sutton New Hampshire. We used a chainsaw mill to make the lumber. Last time I was up there the dock was still doing well. I think it was '92 we made that dock.

what about setting a couple of your large boulders in to the ponds edge and then anchor to them. Seems it would be easier than pouring all that concrete. And look a lot cooler too.

I agree with other viewers to not raise the water level of the pond. It's best to work with the natural level than to change what's already been established.

I was in the other room listening. I thought this was Adler farm or Arms family homestead by the music. They seem to want to sound "macho" with the music. You guys are coming along great!!! Its fun to watch your progress.
