I live in Jacksonville Florida. And I just got word from my landlord that for no reason at all that they decided not to renew my lease and my twelve-year-old son and I need to be out within 60 days. I do have my parents house that we can go to however as a parent is my job to make sure that my son has a safe roof over his head. Also try to go to other apartment communities here in the city and they're a lot more than what I make. I make about $3,000 a month and I'm still not making enough because most of them want you to make three times the rent. I just pray that God continues to protect all of us from this madness that's going on with these rent prices.

This is different. There is a stalwart population of homeless snowbirds that travel by train and bus between the north and south US regions depending on the season but when I saw the homeless outreach communities in my area overrun with people last August I knew there was a real problem. The affordable housing issue is not unique to Florida but inflation and increased housing costs (rent/buy) have exasperated the issue. I think there is this dangerous assumption among people in the real estate and construction markets that there is this unlimited revenue stream from potential clients which to them, justifies their continuous price increases. The reality is very different and most working class people cannot afford to buy homes yet they are critical to keeping a community functioning. After all if you have no grounds keepers, maintenance personal, retail/grocery workers, nurses, teachers, etc. then what do you have? Just a community of rich people in need of services but they will have less options as people in the service industry move away for a better quality of life and find a way to work and live in communities that appreciate them. There needs to be housing for the working class (both affordable rent and buying options) not just based on income (like income restricted communities are a joke!) but priced based on actual census results for median household incomes by area. There also needs to be affordable home buying options. Finally there should be laws in place for senior housing for people on fixed incomes, that they cannot be charged more beyond their means or be at risk of homelessness. The best thing for everyone at this point is another housing market crash, it will help deflate property taxes and open up the inventory. Many folks want to move but cannot because while they know their home will sale well there is nowhere to move too/little inventory options for every price point across the board.

Florida is getting too expensive for many reasons. One of those is all the blue state refugees that come in from high real estate dem states… they come in with loads of cash and there are not enough homes as it is. I do care but I don’t want to see Florida turn into LA, Portland, Seattle or even what’s happening in Austin. This is happening in every state, in every city (small and large). Definitely by design. Including overseas. These rental prices are unsustainable for so many people and homelessness is definitely going to increase like you have never seen it before. You will see more hard working people be completely priced out. These apartments have vacancies but they are using the vacant units as Air BNB's. No way these apartments are renting at capacity. These real estate investment corporations are wicked beasts. They are the ones inflating the prices and contributing to homelessness. State and local gov't is sitting on their behinds like a bunch of crash dummies and doing absolutely nothing about the overbuilding of so-called luxury apartments, the insane lease renewal increases of $150 and higher per month, those in affordable units getting kicked out . Get ready for more tent cities, more crime, more robberies, home invasions, parking lots turning into encampments for those living out of their cars, your property values decreasing, your cities turning into smelly shitholes with human waste everywhere. Everybody is going to be affected by this. There are so many people in foreclosures, they will also be apart of the homeless population because if they couldn't afford their mortgage, they damn sure won't be able to afford these rents. This is going to have ripple effect and it's going to touch EVERYBODY. Buckle-up!

No it can't turn into Cali- we have a semi-functional government (has opposed to completely dysfunctional). And most of municipalities let builders build. California has a completely dysfunctional government and NIMBY (not in my backyard). This keeps real estate much higher priced than in Florida. You have single family houses in California where they should build skyscrapers. A single family 3/2 house in San Francisco is 1-2 million. Florida is 200,000-500,000 depending on where you are.

Coincidentally, Cali cities like San Francisco has significantly higher median income values than Florida cities e.g. Tampa. Per the Census Bureau, San Fran's median income is $120k, Tampa's is 55k. Rent averages $2010 in San Fran, vs $1170 in Tampa; the numbers scale shockingly accurately. Political parties have zero effect on this, because neither really do anything differently regarding zoning & land development; all they do is focus on culture war issues (at all levels pretty much).
NOTE that those numbers are the average of 2016-2020. Since then Tampa's had some of the highest rent increases in the country

The rich from the north and west moved in like the OZ and in this state because of our governor you can’t live and pay if you stay home for free…duh. They then Inflated the prices of homes buying things with more money than Floridians have. Then…pay increased not by $1 a year but by many dollars in a short period. The plan was $15 by 2026 but that wasn’t good enough. Oh then the supply chains and the inflation almost 10% in some areas. Looking for a new girlfriend. Who can afford child support. Let the Government take care of them. That is their job.

@@MrWelfarehater And it's the government's job to put men like you in prison and throw away the key. Your day of reckoning is here.

4 kids?! Stop producing babies you can’t financially support and you won’t be homeless with them! I’m sick of all the whining about affordable housing! Go to school, stay in school and go to college like I did! I worked my azz off doing that to support my kids and keep a roof over their heads! Everybody’s rent has risen across the country! If you’ve made poor choices in life you only have yourself to blame!

Lily don't listen to the haters. ABSOLUTELY 💯 agree. The vast majority of the homeless are there becuse of poor decisions. Drugs, alcohol, criminal record. Or just plain laziness. There are a small handful that deserve a hand up. But the rest sorry, poor choices have poor consequences!
