Is Fla.’s housing, homelessness crisis turning state into next California?

- As more working Florida families share their stories of first-time homelessness, housing advocates warn Florida’s future is in jeopardy without a fix.
"When hotels are cheaper than housing that's a problem". Dang she nailed that one.
Florida is being built for the wealthy and big business which is most to gain with no state tax and a business friendly climate. Miami will be the next Singapore. Republicans which has been picking on California now are silent when this same problem is in their own backyard. Florida needs a balanced economy that helps all economic classes and not just the wealthy and big business. The problem is the state is basically a service economy for tourists and wealthier retirees which widens the gap between the rich and poor.
Florida has a corporate income tax of 5.5% lol.
Exactly they're going to take a state that we built with our sweat labor and backs steal it from us and kick his the f*** out
@@chrissiekotarski The Republican Party is the party of the rich and big business and not for the working class.
That sounds like a sensible thought process. By the way, I just recently learned that Grizzly Adams was actually a real person and read his biography. I was completely floored at the man's life story...probably the most impressive stories of any adventurer I have ever read.
You nailed it. It's sad, I love this state.
Not a surprise unfortunately. Everyone is moving to Florida, especially during COVID. This is a sad sight in America. COVID has exposed a lot of failures in our country and society. 🤷🏿
All liberal states are pushing their forces to Florida, Texas with the purpose of destabilizing the states that don't follow their narrative. the evil keeps moving in all directions.

The government could care less about homelessness. Yet, the government supports 800 plus military bases around the world, and billions nation building other countries.
@Dale Drake what are you talking about?? The people are working, they’re being priced out you moron. The people have jobs but are homeless because of the rising cost of housing. Being homeless and having a job aren’t mutually exclusive
@Dale Drake Not everyone that is homeless are lazy. Other circumstances can happen.
exactly these disgusting politicians only care about them and their money
@Dale Drake This is the most ridiculous statement. Did you just hear that lady? She works and makes a pretty decent paycheck! Do some research before you spread stupidity.
I think the problem with internal affairs is the government's continued willingness to shower illegal immigrants with support, and completely ignore citizen homelessness and veteran support!
No, you can't support a family of 5 on $2300/month.
Shit I can barely support myself on 2625 take home and my mortgage is cheap at 1345/mo compared to rent
Not if you ask the government. I bet this would be well above the poverty line if you look up their tables.
$2,300 a month is just over the average income in Florida, do the math...
Then maybe they shouldn't have had so many children in the first place.
@@eckankar7756 We don't know the full story. Maybe dad was in the picture, he may have died or something else happened. At this point, judging the person for having children is not the answer. A state with a median income of $45,000 wasn't designed to withstand these major rent increases of 60% to 70% over a year! Our government officials should have put a cap on rent increases of 30% to stop landlords from abusing tenants.
Stop corporations and management companies from buying up residential homes. Go back to the rent formula of looking at average income in the area and rent should equal 2.5 - 3 x the renters income. In other words a person earning 3k per month, can pay rent capped at 1000. per month. The area income has got to be a factor in the market rent to prevent what we see across America
Rent should be no more than 20% of someones income. Meaning if they make 3K that would only make them pay 600 max. If they make 2K it would be 400.
Just proves it doesn't matter who runs your state as long as corporate greed goes unchecked.
Because as we all know, homelessness only exists in CA 🙄🙄
The truth is that California has symptoms that are not seen even in the third world.
Born, raised, and living in Florida... I've been saying this for years.
New horizons out there
It's hurricane season. Will we survive 2023?
You can thank the corrupt big corporate real estate industry. They don't care if they destroy communities.
That's the truth and we hear very little about this on the news. Government regulations preventing corporations from investing in the housing market would of been a great solution along with rental controls. They can't mention that because they are too busy trying to trash democrats in prep for the midterms and 2024 election.

Im not sure who can afford rent anywhere making $2300.....
when I was young my rent on a studio went up to $85. a month. I freaked, it motivated me to go to school so I could buy a house. I made $1.36 an hour then. My boys are in their 30s now, both make over $100K a year and both own beautiful houses. I taught them that hunger is a great motivator to never return there again and to give every penny earned a job to do. My boys complained I pushed them into school and into buying houses, savings, investments, 401Ks but it's finally my time to enjoy when I hear them say, "Mama was right."
...and that's around TWICE the minimum wage in Florida, yet still can't afford rent anywhere...
Pretty anywhere in the Midwest
Sadly , these problems will only get worse . Most of Florida's Real Estate has skyrocketed in Value . Especially along Florida's vulnerable & very populated Coastlines . Causing many Insurance companies to bail on the State or go Bankrupt . Leaving the remaining insurance companies very nervous about the upcoming Hurricane Season .
The insurance companies are leaving because of the roofing scams
@@eugenestephens5969 Correct. The roofers are out in force on these videos defending their scams.
Ha! Did you say the developers priced the insurers out
Should be illegal for corporations to buy already built homes and apartments. If Wall Street money gets into residential real estate, it should be for land to build rentals. This money is going around the world ruining lives.
Especially in Ukraine.
It's not just Florida, it's all over the country...
Mainly Florida other states are in better shape than this
I remember when they said it was just California and how the Democrats have destroyed the state. Where are those people now?
Hah yeah right tell that to Wisconsin.
In San Antonio Tx a one bedroom is at least $1,000 a month. Unless you want to live in a haunted house apartment complex then it's at least $800 a month.
How about just raise the minimum wage! Since the state of Florida is no longer for retirees
Exactly 💯💯💯
If a landlord needs to raise the rent it should only be allowed after 180 days. There needs to be a 180 day rule to evict people strictly over raising rent as well. Currently you can kick people out after 30 days after jacking up the rent to rake in the dough. This should not be allowed. Basic housing needs to be protected.
People that can't afford children should keep their pants on and stop reproducing like rabbits. These two women both have 4 children they can't afford to house or feed and no husband in sight. that would take an enormous pressure off everyone.
There should be a 30% cap on rent increases.
gotta blame the big time investors who bought whole neighborhood
They are doing it everywhere but especially in the sunbelt states...They are buying massive amount of property.
I've lived in Pasco since 2017 at $685 for 1/1 and my BLDG was sold (2nd time) in Dec. to an Investment Co. from NY - my new Lease if Month to Month is now $1,500 or 12 mos. is $1,125. They are FORCING 50+ out if we don't qualify for SECTION 42 TAX CREDIT - like they don't want or care about us even though we can pay them; they're wanting People who MEET Federal Govt income brackets & GET Federal Funding also!! (FHA said it's illegal & should get w/Realtor (s), Title and Firms on the Warranty Deed - it's fraudulent to Throw Tenants OUT)... This whole Housing problem Needs to STOP!! I wish someone in Tallahassee would do ANYTHING!!
My family lives over in Zephyrhills. My dad said that new housing developments are charging $320K+ for a basic 2 bedroom ranch style house on .2 acres.
Too many investment firms and out of state buyers. When I inherit the house, I will NEVER sell.
I feel like we're not getting a lot of information in these stories that would be helpful towards understanding exactly how this happened. While this story pulls on the heartstrings, something still feels off about how this all occurred.
Housing costs are now outpacing more & more working class people.
It only takes a handful of rental property owners to start to increase in prices then they all jump on board get a couple real estate agents to go hey guess what your house is now worth $150,000 more a couple more get on board and before you know it everybody wants to get the extra money that it's worth nobody's paying attention to what the greed is doing to the area
Besides all the rent that was not able to fill gaps, now u try rent and it cost way more then before and if u cant get a house u stuck renting or staying any place u can till u can get a apartment or house anytime.
Lack of housing laws and the lack of building new housing is how we got here.
It all start with our government not caring about American citizens. Many Americans in the world are poorly financially illiterate, lack of marketable job skills, depend on some form of government welfare which is the start of keeping someone in poverty. If you get some form of welfare you can’t make a certain amount of money, you can’t have certain assets. Not able to save for a rainy day. Only we as individual can get ourself out of this along with a good family, friend support group. Relying on the government you will definitely find yourself homeless.
Rental assistance isn't a solution...that money has to come from somewhere...someone has to pay that amount...some need, cause or group is going to be denied service because the funds are shifted to rental assistance. Stop having children you can't afford!!!
Well, what we are going isn't going to work, the best option is government directly build housing with an intent to sales to medium to low incomes. The problem is that it is hard to live comfortably on a 80k salary in Tampa, Florida for single person. A 1 bedroom is 1600 dollars in a decent area.
@@marengoczar5035 YES...let the government foot the costs to build low income housing NOT insist private industry build them. Remember the 'projects' of the 1960s? The government did it across the country and every single one of them failed. It doesn't work for many reasons. What is the motivation for private investors to build and maintain low cost housing to a population that will trash the properties in a year???

That's because crooked insurance companies are leaving the state, and leaving homeowners in the dust.
Paying $1,500 for a 680sqft apartment in Miami right now… the new rents are now $1,950 and that’s not worth it at all. Leaving the state for North Carolina, a lot more affordable there.
Poor judgement. Young single mother with 4KIDS?. Don't blame anybody but yourself. I only raised two kids because that was what my wife and I could afford with our income.

AIRNBS in residential neighborhoods should be banned. Once that is fixed, you will see the multitude of townhouses, homes and properties up for sale in the market. We have a lot of outsiders buying property in the state and renting these properties. Most pay cash for these properties and so the working class people of the state have no where to go.
