  • Why do we have to practice the arpeggio sequence (ie - submediant, subdominant triads, diminished and dominant 7ths..)? Here are the benefits and a few tips on practicing arpeggios, in general.

    Great info and explanation. I love to apply to my students the Flesch one. You just dominate the shiftings and the fingerboard in general when done correctly!

      This sequence is used in many scale books. Carl Flesch has it in every key and I'm demonstrating a simplified one-octave version. In the Flesch 'Scale System' book, the one-octave arpeggios are practiced all on a single string, and otherwise are in three-octave scales - this is for more advanced players. A more simplified one or two-octave version can be found in Barbara Barber's book called 'Scales for Young Violinists' (or violists - there is a viola version of the same book). That's one of the best scale books for intermediate levels.
