I used to build the Valenta power units, so watching these clips brings back good memories. You can never forget the scream of the Napier turbocharger spinning at 26 000rpm!
It's great to see a piece of modern railway history brought back to life. Now I can't wait to see and hear it screaming down the mainlines, Bring back some childhood memories of screaming Valenta's flying by
We went on the prototype at ruddington few years ago before it was moved to Locomotion. Definitely felt nostalgic riding onboard with the legendary 41001. Stunning piece of engineering by no means.
Not only is the engine sound spot on, that has to be the most evil sounding horn I've ever heard... (augmented 4th interval ftw, most 2 tone horns are a minor 3rd)
I regularly used to get a Valenta 125 from Reading to paddington from '91 to '95 during my time at university. You could hear so many frequencies from that engine, predominantly the blade frequency of the turbos (the whistle) and the low-end exhaust throbbing of the V12.
I am so excited by this whole project. I remember seeing her at York and wondering to myself "I wonder if..." Now it's reality...how utterly wonderful :) My good lady and I are sooo going on a ride when we can. Fantastic!
Great compilation Darren. So good to see and hear this loco running again. Great to have a Valenta clearing its lungs on the tracks again, hope to see it in action myself at some point.
Our XPT's (Bascially the Aussie version of an HST) had Valentas in them when they were delivered, but now they got upgraded with VP185's - They're due to be replaced by newer rollingstock soon.
Brilliant vid had the pleasure with working with 41001 in December 2018 when she pulled the Santa train at Mid Norfolk Railway in Norfolk. Believe she is staying here for another 2 weeks before returning to York
I used to drive the 43's out of Kings X up the ECML... With 4500 hp under the bonnet ( 2250 hp ) one up front and one up the botty there was plenty of power on tap... Pulling out of the station on notch five with the Paxman Valenta turbo's screaming their little heads off and clouds of exhaust smoke ( sorry Greta Thunberg ) was something to behold with more excitement to enjoy... 125 mph here we come although they would top 148 mph... Now there is food for thought but as I did not fancy tea and biscuits with the Boss well need I say more.. 1
I don’t remember this one. I only remember the early 125’s as having a longer front and in the BR yellow n dark blue livery from the ‘This is the age of the train’ adverts. In Oct 1982 I remember the tilting train, the APT. I was on holiday on the Grand Union Canal and in many places the rails crossed over the canals. I was so excited to see an APT but it was the only time I ever saw one.
It's great to think that although im not local to this fantastic line, but my granddad is a volunteer, so I get to visit this line every time I see him. AND THAT CLAG
when I worked Loughborough signal box [ I was a signalman for over 33 years ] One of the other signalmen could remember hearing and seeing the trains hammering over the great central bridge. It was the fastest line with signaling system far in advance of the midland line until the managers of the midland got hold of it and shut it
yes. the great central was the last main line to be constructed around 1899 with bigger loading gauge and faster speeds with straighter lines, more like an american railway, Then they closed it and dismantled it 60 years later...
I disagree. We have the 20 cylinder version MTU in our DL class freight locomotives, and they get pretty rowdy. Very refined though compared to a General Electric 7FDL
My Granddad drove the prototype at the 150th anniversary cavalcade of the Stockton and Darlington railway in 1975. He didn't want to though he wanted a steam train.
Superb piece of history Darren. You produce excellent videos but I'm afraid the loud clicking of your cam is very distracting, sorry to say mate. It's still a like from me tho! Thanks. Ken
+Midland1072 That would be sight indeed. I'm hoping that sometime in the not too distant future they can get 41001 running at speed on a mainline charter in this type of formation.
Luckily Kenneth Grange(now Sir)got on board and redesigned the nose from the prototype version - although now over 40 years later I quite like the old style as a piece of history.
I like them both. The prototype is very 70s but back then it looked ultra futuristic. You half expected Nick Tate to be in the driving seat. (If you were a kin in the 70s you'll likely know what I mean. Ah nostalgia!)
that will be next diesel visitor for next year on the seven valley railway Darren because I haven't seen that prototype hst yet I hope to see it one day
I like the prototype because its the first high speed train of 1976 before the class 43 hst took over and remain for next 40 years until the class 800 the new electric train of the future mate
I don’t recall this one (the first to start up) it looks like it should be a rear end and never a front engine. Very strange. I call in Oct 1982 on holiday on a narrowboat on the Grand Union canal. Many times the rail crossed over the water and I was so excited to see a very futuristic looking APT. Never saw one before or since but I never forgot it. I was almost 12 then, now I’m heading for 48
This is fascinating stuff. It’s a great sound. I went to Reading in 1979 to see all the HSTs and that sound was incredible. I read on Wiki that all of this is now over due to some falling out or something. Shame. I resume the run was only this single track and quite slow?
Well done Project Miller, GCRN and EMT for their help and support. Great footage of the landmark event mate, looks like we were on the same bridge! Check out my vid for full footage ;-)
0:30 Anyone else think that Armstrong Powerhouse used 41001 to gather sounds for the Valenta sound pack? The start-up sounds very similar to that of the pack, though slightly off... Am I the only one that believes this?
Be cool if the auxiliary cab at the rear end of the power car could be made operational even if the power controller at aux end only had 2 power notches
Is it the weather in UK or the British engineering? Why do British diesels smoke that much? Black smoke is ok, it means rich mixture in cylinders. But the white smoke means most of the fuel is being exhausted without burning in cylinders, and the blue means; the oil rings fail and the engine burns oil as well as fuel. And the Biritsh diesels smoke both blue and white!
I used to build the Valenta power units, so watching these clips brings back good memories. You can never forget the scream of the Napier turbocharger spinning at 26 000rpm!

@@arricat5e311 The front window looks out of scale to me. It makes the whole thing look small, like a model.

Tim Sully you know (because she’s owned by the GCR Nottingham) that she’s only used twice a year!
Shame now it will never be used again
J eagles why?
Great compilation Darren. So good to see and hear this loco running again. Great to have a Valenta clearing its lungs on the tracks again, hope to see it in action myself at some point.
Fantastic to see!! Lets hope its the first of many HST's that are preserved in operation for 'come the time' they no longer rule our rails! Dave
Our XPT's (Bascially the Aussie version of an HST) had Valentas in them when they were delivered, but now they got upgraded with VP185's - They're due to be replaced by newer rollingstock soon.
I don't care what anyone says, its diesel engines for me! Valenta is at the top! Looked awesome coming out from the fog 👍
Well Done Darren for capturing this bit of history. Mike

Excellent video Darren. Good to see 41001 back where it belongs at the lead of a HST set :)
Awesome! I really loved that engine, glad to see it back with a prototype. Project Miller is one of my favourite projects.
Superb video ! 👍
Sounds beautiful. Good old clag display too! Love it.
sure hope we can also see a HST 43 preserved soon in the near future when they get retired, but the 41001 is the best,
Sounding fantastic! Brilliant video!

That is am awesome sounding Valenta! I remember the production HSTs as a boy racing through Peterborough station - impressive!!
Its the most weirdly beautiful train

miss hearing the howl of Valenta's that I loved when I was a kid. MTU's sound so bland and agricultural
Yes, those screaming Valenta's were something. Luckily I can still enjoy the VP185's on my local MML for a few more years yet.
At least EMT had the good grace to use VP185's unlike the other TOC's, whom opted for those nasty MTU's.

@@etsmp_gh christ mate I'd love to live where you live.
I’d love it if they fitted a valenta back into a preserved class 43 power car.
That's the plan!
as we all hate to goodbye to the hst i think its fitting to allow this to go mainline running
Imagine this prototype +the fastest Class 43 power car
Nice to see the big boys coming out to play with the trains!
Absolutely Amazed when I saw this in Bo'ness ,Falkirk Back in June 22nd to the 24th 2016 at the Diesel Gala day .Great Machine.
It's a great and historic piece of UK railway history - hope to seen it running on the mainline in the future!
41001 sounds AMAZING!!!!!
Great Darren, glad they played to the crowd!!!! Sounded amazing,
Great stuff. :) At last, I know why there were several people with cameras at Rushcliffe Halt when I walked past on that foggy day. :)
Enjoyed seeing the 41 it looks brilliant. its been a long time since a was there, so thank you
Now that's what I call beautiful!
It was a great sight and sound to be able to capture indeed.
I did not see it sadly
Excellent video. Glad to see the smoke eventually cleared up - perhaps they put some upper cylinder lubricant in the heads for storage.

a superb video, really enjoyable, the best loco a Deltic fan has ever filmed lol
Steam man myself but this is very nice to see.

Great video!
Nice to see these old girls running beautifully
Fantastic to c it running again
Stunning , sight & sounds !
now if only they could do that with the APT and get the two at a gala somewhere, that would be amazing
+Midland1072 That would be sight indeed. I'm hoping that sometime in the not too distant future they can get 41001 running at speed on a mainline charter in this type of formation.
only this video shows us how similar sounding yet how different the vp185 and valenta really are.
Definitely a contrast between the two, and then again even more if you compare with a MTU engine HST.
Love the sound but damn the prototype is ugly. Much prefer the sleeker front of the production HST's. Still an amazing set though.
Luckily Kenneth Grange(now Sir)got on board and redesigned the nose from the prototype version - although now over 40 years later I quite like the old style as a piece of history.

Did it ever make it on to the main line? I can't recall seeing it out and about....
a cyclops on rails
Nice video!
What has happened to 41001 since 2014-16 ish time
NRM wanted it back. So it's probably never gonna run again cus of the NRM being toxic.
I think the prototype looks more modern than the final product...
...
It looked very futuristic at the time, but I think the production design is certainly the more iconic.
Very nice video, likes from me !!!
0:37 RIP the ozone layer
Its white, so is simply cold.
Sounds like Class 43 Valenta
It is a shame that BR scrapped the second power car...
But at least money can replicate it
They can always make another one take a class 43 change the windows, buffers, cab layout and valenta engine done
looking forward to the gala
I thought the GCRN was 'land locked' is it now connected to the main rail network?
great sound and the clagg
+Rammer Gramps It was indeed, great to be able to capture this historic working.
Would be good to see a set made up with this at one end and the class 89 at the other
Bloke waving his arm didn’t add much. Why the constant waving?
Is this the prototype of the intercity 125?
The leading power car is indeed one of the two from the prototype Intercity 125.

Good front comparison at 3.42
A lovely piece of workmanship but can that engine not be tuned to stop polluting the atmosphere
They should rebuild the rear 41002 and paint the coaches
Cool
That engine has some SERIOUS wear in the cylinders! Far too much blue smoke!
I was thinking that, or just a hell load of oil buildup in turbo etc
That horn sounds like the driver stamped on a frog.
does it have a marston?
+Adam Bell Honest answer is I don't know, but if you visit Projectmiller.org.uk there's loads of info on there.
Indeed it does!
In romania we have locomotive from 60s

Money and talent can make a replica of it
I'm so glad this power car has been preserved, I recall making a trip to see it at Old Oak Common back in the 1970's. What happened to '002?
41002 was scrapped in December 1990 at C F Booth of Rotherham I believe
Why didn't the train run it at top speed? It's not like the train was going to fall apart...
Heritage railways in the UK usually have a 25 mph speed limit by law. Thats why they cant run at full speed
what was the point of expending all that time and effort to make it go 140+ then?!
well it very much could have fallen apart
@@MXVDJ heritage railways are not mainline, that’s why they went to the effort to design them to do 125mph and why it ran 143mph no problem.
