@@A330Driver Fingers crossed !🤞
Same. Im an airliner simmer, and mainly the fenix at that. However, I enjoy these shorter educational vids from Emi. Always have, as they have been very helpful in learning some of the intricacies of these aircraft
Same here!!
06:23 - *_"To get out of the approach mode you have to de-select the ILS frequencies, or disengage the AP and turn off both flight directors"._*
I have always been under the impression that while you can't just press APP again to get out the the approach mode, pressing other modes on the MCP such as HDG or LVL CHG would do the trick. Tried it. And nope, won't do it.
Always learning something new here, great channel.
Thank you very much!
There is third way to get out of approach mode as well - press TO/GA. But TO/GA logic in different stages of Auto/Manual flight is another story..
Prior to 1500', HDG or LVL CHG or APP mode pushing again is O.K to get out of APP mode, but blow 1500' you should use TO/GA or Auto pilot disengage and F/Ds off then ON.
I've always relied on the flight mode annunciator, but I didn't know what the green lights on the buttons really meant. Thank you!
i just thought they mean that LNAV is activated lol
Thank you. I always wondered why those green lights seemed erratic. It's clear now.
Thanks. Every time learning something new.
Interesting. I always thought that the green light meant that it's armed (and then the FMA confirming what's active).
Thank you for clarifying.
"What you tell the kids you want them to do" VS "What the kids are actually doing"
Fantastic video, emi... I too was having some confusing moments when the APP light turned off, yet the plane was flying the ILS approach normally. Thank you so much for all your hard work. I hope the 777 ebook will soon be out so we can show our deep appreciation to your immense contribution.
It should hopefully get ready this month!
Best video ever! I´ve been flightsimming for several years, and always been quite curious as to why (especially APP) disengages even though it´s still active. Now I FINALLY understand why! Thank you so much! :D
haha, thank you! Happy to hear that!
Hi.
I have just checked PMDG 777 in P3D and it looks to me that not all Boeing models have the same logic. Indeed in B777 when LNAV and VNAV buttons are armed on the ground and lit green second push of these buttons disarms the chosen mode. However, once HDG Hold is pressed and green (after the first push is already armed), no matter how many times I try to push that button HDG Hold remains active. It changes only when HDG SEL is pressed. Same with ALT HOLD and V/S mode changes only when you press V/S in ALT HOLD and ALT HOLD if you are in V/S. Pushing the second time AP also does not disengage autopilot. Once you press AP it remains green until AP disengaged button is pressed on a yoke. When you press LNAV on the ground (arm LNAV mode) it is lighted green and it remains green during takeoff and after takeoff it is green and you cannot switch it off by pressing the another time LNAV button. Based on PMDG B777 model it looks to me that if a given button on MCP is illuminated green, pushing a second time that switch will remove the green light only if that mode is armed and not active. Once a given mode becomes active it can't be switched off by pressing second time that switch. You have to select another mode to do it. So either B777 logic is a bit different or PMDG made a lot of mistakes in their B777 model :).
I also checked an official B777 FCOM and e.g. for LNAV light it is stated: "LNAV Light Illuminated (green) - the LNAV mode is armed or engaged.
LNAV is disengaged: • by selecting heading hold (HDG HOLD) or track hold (TRK HOLD) • by selecting heading select (HDG SEL) or track select (TRK SEL) • when the localizer captures • if there is a dual FMC failure (LNAV may be re-engaged if there is an active CDU ALTN NAV route available). LNAV is disarmed by pushing the LNAV switch a second time, or by arming LOC or APP.
"
Generally, B777 FCOM says that a green light on a given MCP button means that the corresponding mode is either armed or engaged. Then to check if it is armed or engaged you have to look at PFD.
Good info, thanks a lot! You are slowly filling in my simmer‘s knowledge gaps :-)
I haven't watched it yet, but let me try to guess the content (as a not-Boeing guy) : The lights don't indicate what modes are actually active and people should start looking at their FMA's.
The latter part for sure - but the actual meaning of the lights is an interesting one as well!
Great video and great information. I’ve been swimming for years and never really understood why some green lights would go off at times. Now it is perfectly clear. Thanks! 😊
I know you really point out this a lot in your videos and I am starting to learn from it. You read from the screens not from the buttons. Also, thank you, I've been seeing a lot of your videos and I just love you spend your free time on something related to your work just for some people to know more. Hope to see the next video!
Thank you very much! Indeed the importance of this can not be overstated!
So many of the issues people face with the autopilot are simply caused by them not checking that the plane indeed went into the mode they wanted.
This is very helpful!!!! Many times I've gotten confused by this system because I thought the light = active. This clears up so much for me! Thanks!!!!
Thanks so much for this! This was a very important topic and I had no idea that is how it worked. I never understood why it felt like those green lights had a mind of their own! A deep dive into the top indicators of the fma would be appreciated. I imagine there is a lot more to reading and understanding those than it initially appears. You are a great flight instructor-thanks for all your videos!
I was one of those guys getting confused with those buttons and indicators! Thank you Emmanuel!
Thanks! Simple and clear explanation.
Thanks for this. That clears up a lot of behaviour I previously found confusing.
That was interesting, thank you!
Emil, keep those coming! I actually did learn something today!
A bit late to comment, but. 1. Excellent video as always, 2. On the 747 the light on the APP button on the MCP remains on, however, the only way to get out of approach mode is to disconnect the Ap and cycle the FDs like you mentioned.
I learned this through brute force and trial and error 👍👍
So informative as usual Emanuel
Not just simmers, even some pilots didn’t know it. Very important on Boeings to verify the FMA is showing what you actually clicked.
This make me laugh.
Decades ago I was up to exam in a simulator (Boeing Seattle) in avionics. (licensed tech).
Instructor pointed at AP button - Tell me what this is.
I told him everything I knew about the system -
- Not the answer I am looking for.
I continued to talk about the system, not sure what he wanted to know.
Again -
- Not the answer I am looking for......
Finally I gave up.
- Correct answer is, you can deselect it.
( Yes I passed the test - and got my license)
The "ole" bandwidth gremlin popping up 😂
The FMA is "underrated" by some simmers. But there is a reason why it is on top of the PRIMARY Flight Display (PFD).
The MCP is for the choice, what you WANT the aircraft to do, and the FMA is showing what the aircraft IS doing right now.
That's why all readbacks/callouts by the PM are done only from the FMA, not from the MCP.
The same goes for Airbus, when you hear (example) "Man Flex 63, SRS, Runway, Autothrust blue" in the T/O roll, that is exactly what the FMA is showing.
Well said!
Danke ! Learned something new again, like a good pilot should :)
Super useful video. Thanks. I'm now trying to think, does Airbus do the same?
So that's why the APP light goes off, I always thought it was a bug 🤣
Very good explanation!
Very interesting, thank you!
A lot valuable information thx cpt👌🙏
For the first time today my A/T didn’t work. Everything was fine I triple checked but it just didn’t increase throttle! I had to cut the A/T and apply manually very scary!!
I can see why that's commonly confused.
Very useful indeed. Isn't it great we can have this on our PCs?! And most people still think Microsoft Flight Simulator is rubbish and a waste of time: people judge without knowing! On almost everything. Judging without knowing...
Oh boy, those who say MSFS wouldn't be good for learning just have no idea... of course not everything is perfect, but let's face it: While other sims may have better physics or flight modelling, none of them can be used to learn how to fly a plane either.
What about X-Plane then?
Like V1 says, pilots live and die by the flight mode annunciator
But why not use yellow as able collor? Or is that a diiferent mode?
Normaly you just assume that green is good and thar you need to turn the display button either green, blank or white.
Will the 737 ever show weather on their navigational display
Very interesting
Hello. Can you show please dual engine failure on cruise B737?
I‘lol do one for you on my Twitch. I do a lot of emergency situations in MSFS2020. If you want my guy go watch me same on twitch at ROBINHOOD_TTV
I would love to see the trick for the APP mode since I didnt get all of it :/
Hi Emanuel,
Is there any update on eBook for PMDG 777?
Thanks for all efforts.
How do you go around when you're above the missed approach altitude and don't won't to set TOGA power?
@A330Driver - Emi, is your Ultimate PMDG 777 Guide eBook ready as you announced it many weeks ago?
Interesting information as usual but I have to be honest and admit I’ve not flown 737 for many months now. Checking the modes in the PFD is the only thing I believe BUT in Fsim there could still be bugs 😅. Did not know about disabling approach mode. So what happens in real life if you need to do an emergency go around while in approach mode ? Does engaging to/ga disable the mode, I carnt see pilots fiddling with radios at such a high workload time ?
I’m sure you have a video on it 😂
Im not sure but I think to/ga disables approach mode and maybe it automatically starts climbing but im not really sure.
You'd use TO/GA mode indeed, that also disengages APP mode.
I only knew this because I heard u say it before. It’s very unintuitive especially coming from an airbus. Would make more sense to me to have an armed (white?) color and an engaged (green) color or something. Then again I’m not a freaking Boeing engineer so don’t mind me haha
Armed white and green engaged is indeed exactly what Boeing uses on the FMA.
According to the EASA and FAA Color coding standards, green is the correct color here because according to normal system behavior, pressing that button will disengage the mode.
I know it’s counterintuitive, but according EASA and FAA standards, green is the correct color.
Question, you mentioned a 777 ebook in one of your videos I was watching recently. I didn't see a link anywhere for it. Am I making things up or is that a real thing you did?
Hi, it's a real thing work in progress. I'm adding the finishing touches to it right now and then it should release soon.
@@A330Driver Thanks for the reply! Looking forward to it!
Soooo this is why I was thinking APP wasn’t working in both Zibo and PMDG lol. They both must have made it more realistic. It was working but the light never lit up and I just kept thinking I did something wrong or it wasn’t working.
You mean they just figured out this behavior and added it to the aircraft? Is that why you're only mentioning this now in 2024?
This has been implemented since the first PMDG 737 in FS2004. Yet almost no simmer is aware of it, as you can see by the reception of the video in 20*2*4 ;-)
@@A330Driver Good to know! I don't have the older versions to check.
Does the Honeywell MCP has the same concept like this?
Yes, it does.
Is it the same for Airbus? Highlights what mode can be deselected not what's armed?
No, Airbus is different. Basically: Just read the FMA; it tells you what the plane will do.
+1
Good afternoon sir, is there a way to set N1 V/S mode?
N1 and V/S? Why would you want to do that? I don't see operational sense in this. When you engage V/S, the plane will automatically engage A/T in MCP SPD mode.
