  • A demonstration of how to modify a fiberglass aircraft engine cowl to provide a better fit is shown. Polyurethane foam is used to create a new shape and then fiberglass cloth is used to make the structure. A resin is then applied to the fiberglass cloth. The purpose of the video is to demonstrate one technique for repairing/modifying an existing fiberglass component.

Jan is always busy doing something. I don't think he ever sleeps? His work ethic is making me want to go take a nap . . . . I'm exhausted !

Good job Jan I have learned a few shortcuts after glassing many surfboards. If you tape off the area on the cowling where you want to glass the resin won't soak through onto the other areas. After you wet up the cloth, use a bondo squege to smooth out the cloth, this will also squeeze out the air bubbles and make a more uniform amount of resin. When it starts to go off, trim the edges with a razor blade and peel off the unwanted cloth. That will save a lot of extra sanding.Dean Smith 750 Cruzer Corona Ca.

This was a really good topic and video. Hopefully, you might be able to do a video on the very last thing you mentioned: How to use the fillers to make the edges (between the cowl and new layers of fiberglass) look professional. This has dogged me for years...

How did you remove the expanding foam? and how did you accurately cut the halves?

You can just leave it, or physically remove it by scraping it out with a screwdriver or the like, or you can dissolve it with a solvent (eg acetone). Usually you can get most of it out with a tool like a screwdriver and then wipe with a rag dipped in solvent. The stuff is so light that sometimes just leaving a little bit is no big deal.

Why do you combine polyester resin to epoxy resin? Are they compatible?

C4GIF maybe it's an aviation thing but I would never use polyester resin, epoxy resin is much stronger but maybe it's an FAA requirement....

Polyester vs epoxy is totally personal preference.
