On October 7th 2023, the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum ran a Summerville Steam Special with Southern 2-8-2 No. 4501 from Chattanooga TN to Summerville GA. I was able to catch it at many known and unknown spots along the way, including a shot with a 1930’s era vehicle parked perfectly next to the tracks. The Mikado put on a great show, hauling the 8 car train between states, and sounded spectacular donning a SOU PS4 whistle. Enjoy classic Southern Steam in the South!

That’s a Virginia & Southwestern 3 chime. It’s essentially a modified Ps-4 whistle on a different bowl and valve assembly.

Not a Ps4 whistle. While similar, this whistle is a Virginia & Southwestern Railway 3 chime.
I was also the fireman on this trip.

It's a shame that this steam locomotive can't get on a mainline, and do 55 plus miles per hour, like it did in It's heyday.

Well 4501 maxes out around 60, so that’s largely impractical for it to run that fast. Another concern would be getting approval from Amtrak and the FRA. NS management decisions and government bureaucracy would spell an end to that within the first year.
