Other videos have the tendancy of overcomplicating this process (from a beginners perspectives). If possible, I would love to request a video of you mixing a song (with vocals) from start to finish *for beginners*. This is excellent! Nicely done. My questions are: If it's this straightforward, why do so many engineers recommend sending out your EP to get mastered professionally? Do professionals have a better 'preset' than Logic or do the pros dial everything in perfectly using more expensive plugins/hardware? Do you get a better end result than Logic with LANDR, eMastered, etc? Have you compared a song mastered in Logic to something sent out to a professional or an automated online service? If so, how did they compare? A side by side comparison would make for an interesting experiment, maybe even morph into the subject for one of your videos.

    • @knuckledustermusic
      @knuckledustermusic  Год назад +2

      Hi Espedale, in my opinion the main reason for sending your songs out for mastering is to get a fresh set of ears on them. It's easy to lose perspective on how things are sounding when you've spent so much time on a project. Most mastering engineers will have better treated rooms than your average home studio as well, so they'll likely pick up on things that get missed in the home studio.
      I've had mixed experiences with mastering engineers. The good ones in my opinion will provide a final subtle polish to the overall song without trying to mess with the mix too much. If there's changes needed in the mix they'll let you know. I've had others try to do too much and I wasn't happy with the end results.
      I've tried LANDR, and it does a surprisingly good job. For someone that puts out a lot of music or content quickly I would consider it a good option. I like Ozone as well because it has the "Master Assistant" which comes up with some automatic settings, but you still have the ability to tweak them afterwards. A comparison video is a good idea! I'll see what I can do.
      I hope that answers your questions.
      Cheers
      Georges

      @espedale Год назад +1

      @@knuckledustermusic Thank you! All of my questions were answered in detail beyond your already excellent video. Hoping I have not worn out my welcome here, but two more questions that others may have.
      1) Do you feel like Logic's Adaptive Limiter adds color to the final mix? I have GW MixCentric on my submix channel, and when I add the Adaptive Limiter it seems to dull the highs, even when I set the Adaptive Limiter to close to the existing (pre-Limiter) output .
      2) Is it ok to send a song out to an automated mixer, like LANDR, at anything less than clipping volume and it will be ok? There seems to be debate as to how much headroom there needs to be. Some say anything less than 0 dB is fine because we are in the digital age, whereas others seem to stick to the established ~ -3 to -6 dB headroom pre-Mastering. Maybe this is an artifact from the analog days? Maybe this could be another comparison video!
      Thanks for all you do. I am excited to learn from your future content!

    • @knuckledustermusic
      @knuckledustermusic  Год назад +1

      Hey @@espedale, ya I do agree the Adaptive Limiter does effect the highs a bit. I noticed my hi hats were a little less "crispy" after listening after having read your comment. As for question #2, I would have guessed that it wouldn't matter much, but LANDR says "a good rule of thumb is to keep the peaks of your sound hitting not much above -10 dBFS and the body of your waveform around -18 dBFS" (blog.landr.com/prepare-music-landr-mastering/) so I'd go with their recommendations.
      Cheers
      Georges

    • @espedale
      @espedale Год назад +1

      @@knuckledustermusic Yikes. I have some work to do on my song if -10 dBFS is the recommended peak. Also, thank you for confirming that the Adaptive Limiter is reducing the crispiness of the highs in your mix as well. Thanks for sharing your knowledge again.

    Hi George 🙂 I am a big fan of your channel. I am new in making music and to mix and master, and I must say that your videos is for sure the best I have found so far 👍 really good explinations. I have a question, and to many its maybe a stupid question, but I Take my chance that you or somebody else will answer 😊 I do right now some electronic music and will try out the ”Dance preset” in the mastering presets. The preset you use in this video have the ”Out calling true peak” nob. In the ”Dance” preset there is a nob that just says ”Output level”, do they have the same meaning and that I should put mine at - 1.0 dB regarding the Spotify standard? The Lu range etc. I have learned now thanks to you, its just that the bB thing I want to be sure with.
    All the best from Sweden and happy easter 🐣🎵

    • @knuckledustermusic
      @knuckledustermusic  Год назад

      Hi MV D thanks for the kind words! Yes the "output level" on the limiter for the dance preset is the same thing as the "out ceiling" for the Broadcast preset. Set the "output level" to -1db and I would also suggest switching the Mode to "Precision" and turning on "True Peak Detection".
      I hope that helps.

    Hey amazing tutorials, by far the best yet. A quick question or two...To dial LUFS can I use the Multi-pressor out or is it better to use Adaptive limiter? And how close to 14 LUFS should I be? Is a tad higher or lower going to kill my jam? FYI I'm a heavy fat rock/metal guy, any tips are greatly appreciated, your teaching style rules.

    • @knuckledustermusic
      @knuckledustermusic  Год назад

      Hey thanks for the kind words! For simplicity's sake I'll add gain using the limiter since it's always the last thing in my chain. If the multipressor is the second last plugin in your chain (before the limiter), then yes would could simply adjust the output gain there to make it hit the limiter harder. If you're a little over or under it's not a huge deal. Since you're doing metal, I might suggest going a bit over rather than under. I hope that helps.

    Is there any difference between using "stereo out" channel to master vs. using a master bus?

    • @knuckledustermusic
      @knuckledustermusic  Год назад +1

      You can't add any plugins to the "Master" track. It's purely a volume fader. Do all your processing on the "Stereo Out" and keep the volume at 0db for both the "Stereo Out" and "Master" unless you're doing a fadeout.

    Why does my stereo out peak even when I compensate over all volume of individual tracks

    • @knuckledustermusic
      @knuckledustermusic  Год назад +1

      Hi Karma, it's hard to know what's going on without being able to see your mixer, but even if your individual tracks aren't clipping, you can still get clipping on your stereo out once you start adding more tracks together. Start by lowering all your individual tracks by -3db to see if that helps. If you're still clipping, then lower the individual track volumes some more. I hope that helps answer your question.
