Okay, I have been writing and recording my own music since literally 1987, in the old Tascam Porta 1 era, and this video is the most helpful 13 minutes of mixing and mastering instruction in all that time. Concise and to the point. I have written about 400 songs and can hash out a decent tune, but have long been terrible at this aspect. I have been radically underusing Logic to say the least. Thanks a million. Now to go remix and remaster...everything. LOL.

love your teaching style, clean, direct, easy, no hype. Though this is specific to your sound I have learned a lot in 15 minutes around what Mastering actually is, which of course - is an individual art form. Thank you. I do have some questions though please?

Ive watched plenty of mastering tutorials and this is by far THE BEST one. My songs went from 10/10 to 100/10
could you do a video on how to mix a song correctly? Like how do you know when a song is mixed well enough to be mastered?
Chloe Moser fair warning mixing is a slightly subjective art. Each song is different and can be mixed differently so one tutorial won’t work for EVERY track
@@iluhyou7707 ^This is very true. There are, however, definitely some basics that are a good place to start like understanding how to EQ different instruments.
I use the master level at the top right of logic - I pick a level, any level, and lock it in and see how each separate track (vocals, piano, horns, drums etc.) reaches, passes or doesn't get to the mark I set. I just set the mark with my eye - pic a db. I use that as I listen to each part in "solo" (s) mode. Then I ignore the level in the window and use just my ear with all the parts playing at once. Don't over think it, most of it is common sense. Then, when it sounds fairly decent and even, I bounce it and make an MP3 and listen to it on various music systems (cell phone, laptop, car stereo etc.) then I go back and re adjust again, and again etc.

Thanks Valentina, biggest lesson was putting the Limiter on. Another Gotcha which I only found out afterward was making sure you turn Normalise Off. Oh so much better after that.
An alright sub for the first plug in, imo, is the stock overdrive plug in, set drive to 0 and make sure it's at 20k, bring the gain down a DB or 2 and it adds just a subtle, soft clip distortion to the master

You should get 'Punisher' by Denise for tape saturation. In addition, the Exciter in 'Neutron 3 Elements' can be nice when used sparingly. :)
Thank u for sharing, quick request when u show the before and after master try and volume match cause louder will always sound better to the ear. Just so we can hear the difference it needs to be at the same volume.. thank u for the great work

Cool beans. People won't listen to music from anybody because the quality of the audio can damage the ear drums. Hence, Apple Watches will tell you how long you are allotted listening to a certain volume at what ever frequency. You have art there. This song sounds pretty and not only because of you. The elegance of this masterpiece has revealed itself. Thank you for including tips and tricks from other videos.

To get clipping or extra volume just add a filter on the master track

great tutorial! that helped me out a lot. recently have been learning all i could about mixing and needed a mastering tutorial. one thing i would have found even better is if you explained a little more in depth what each plugin's purpose is in the master chain, rather than "finishing touch" or "adds that extra touch to it" 😅 maybe my ears haven't been trained enough, but i honestly couldn't tell much of a difference when it came to those items.

Hi, enjoyed your video. A couple of Quick questions. I noticed that in some videos the technician is mastering after they bounce the final mix, and in your case not so. Does it matter. Also, when I try to master there is no place in the master channel to add plug ins. I can only add them to the output channel. Any suggestion why this is so? Greg
