- this is the beginning of my "analysis", mostly an introduction to it and refresher before i really start tearing it into tiny tiny pieces

(i tried to have it be mostly unused gameplay footage from the mod but i deleted a lot of the recordings because i didnt anticipate a deep rooted psychological need to make a rant/analysis series on it)

You don't know how glad I am that you are tearing it to shreds. I am tired of people telling me that it's just a harmless "fun" mod, and therefore should not be criticised.
bishop compares himself to a wolf? you mean, like, able to be kicked out by the lead female at any moment for being undeserving genetic material?

When I downloaded the mod originally I was playing a character that, due to her personal nature, requires a little more care and love when in a relationship to warm up to them, and I wanted a romance mod that would allow her to date a male character who's respectful of that. She's not even a character that's "I'm not like other girls" either, she likes things culturally associated with femininity, but she needed not to be treated like shit.
Instead I got a mod that was just all about the boning, about how much every single guy wanted to get into her pants so incredibly badly, and that no matter how much she rejected their advances she would get no respite from their onslaught of sexual comments. It made me feel ashamed to be a writer but also inspired me to be better.
I realise I wasn't the target audience (being a guy and all) but is it too much to ask for an actually loving romance? We already have several female characters with that as a selling point (Even Rigmor, who I personally did not like that much). It doesn't help SR2 that it's also very boring.
What your character is looking for is Kaidan. Kaidan feels like a real person and has cool quest-ties to the story. He is the epitome of a gentle giant (not to his enemies). Most importantly he respects you no matter what your gender and is a great friend even if you don't romance him.

@@LadyAsteria58 YES! Kaidan is probably the best romance mod I know. The player gets the free choice of whether or not they want a romance and does not have anything forced upon them. Kaidan is actually supportive, incredibly kind and respectful. His quest is quite interesting as well. Literally the polar opposite to Bishop.
The worst part of all of this is that Bishop’s behavior towards you is largely indistinguishable from how the non-love interests treat you, with virulent misogyny and sexual harassment. The authors literally did the “introduce a cartoonishly awful antagonist to make the horrible love interest look better” trope in Thorn, and that’s always a red flag.
Speaking as a guy who downloaded this mod a long time ago looking for something sweet and genuinely romantic, who knew nothing about it going in, I was immediately turned off by everything it added, and Bishop was by far the worst. I purposefully did all I could to get him to just go the hell away and he never did and I hated it. I don't even think guys are the target audience for this. Looking back at how it came out at the height of Twilight and 50 Shades, it made too much sense. I think it's just targeted towards people with a humiliation, dub-con, or dom/sub type kink.

i never knew about this mod before but it's extra funny when you think about how npcs will talk to (read : sexually harass) the dragonborn when the main character is technically a god's reincarnation, a dragon slayer and potentially a mass murderer

I'm still sort of like. This mod is a lot to unpack, but also why tf is it called the romance mod when 1: you don't actually get to pick a love interest (like a dating sim ig) and 2: there's no romance in the mod's story?
It's literally just. Do quest, Bishop says some misogynistic shit, you encounter a guy that wants to fuck you, Bishop throws a tantrum until the player fucks him, repeat.
Like on one hand, different strokes I guess bc The Straights, on the other (and iirc you pointed this out in one of the showcase videos) there's no bonding between the player character and Bishop. A series of isolation attempts and a load of misogyny does not a romantic relationship make...
Like granted I played this for a joke years ago, before it's more current iteration, and even back then there was no relationship or romance? There was just a point where I had to walk away from it because the rapey behavior and way Bishop treated the player character and everyone around them was so... 😬 Yikes. I remember going "oh, oh this is NOT fun to play" during one scene where he verbally abuses and forces himself on the player and it was just extremely uncomfortable. Like, again, different strokes I guess for what people want in their weird Skyrim mods? But also I don't think one can or should call it a romance mod when nothing portrayed in it is at all romantic.
I realize that's me nitpicking, but it kind of threw me seeing the current state of the mod after numerous criticisms and (iirc, it HAS been a few years now) promises to improve the mod's story only for it to pretty much be the same mess it was when I first touched it. Big oof.
A good intro, I'm looking forward to the next part because it's good to see other people take notice of how yikes this mod is lmao.

I was still too young to have formed coherent opinions on this mod when I played through it the first time. But I did remember it feeling a little too off. Not to mention Bishop kept calling my male character with bulging pecs a princess.
I was the same ,i think it was 2.0 where he threatens to pin you down and make you enjoy it that made me delete.

@@RosieSquall yep I really hate how much attention the mod got despite writing that. And the fact they added a bandit who threatens the same who's a villain but but. The thing is the bandit was less r*pey about it.... And less screaming and shouting
@@mayalewis2956EXACTLY! Thorn got the bad guy treatment but he was arguably less creepy than Bishop. The dialogue that Bishop had through that whole interaction was also weird and made no sense. He says that pretending to be interested in the offer of ganging up on you, he was buying you time because you were outnumbered. But the two of you weren’t ANY less outnumbered after he did that?? I just left the room and left him to fight Thorn’s group by himself lol

Because this mod perplexes me so much as a fan of both NWN2 and Skyrim/Oblivion.
Bishop and Casavir are shallow bland copies of their originals even accounting the fact that originals were severely underdeveloped. And Neeshka doesn't even remotely resemble lovely fun-loving irresponsible rogue, who despised Bishop. It feels like mod's authors didn't even played NWN2 just read a few wiki-articles and decided to make this rip-off of a mod.
Just as an example. NWN2 Casavir's backstory was cut from NWN2 but enough bits of dialogue left in game files to theorize that he fell so in love with a woman that he killed his rival out of jealousy. Then he realized what he's done, felt guilt and remorse and self-exiled himself from Neverwinter. Hence, his reluctance to tell the Main Character that he loves her. He's afraid the story will repeat itself. Contrast and compare to "I have non-specific vows but Dragonborn is so SPECIAL that i want to break them."
As for Bishop. I feel like i can write a dissertation on how wrong is characterization of this unarguable piece of shit in SRM. He's too toxic and too mellow at the same time. I didn't thought that was possible.
No effort was spent to make characters fit into TES setting either. What god from the Nine Divines requires their paladins to be this level of chaste? Because DnD god of justice Tyr (whom Casavir served as a paladin) doesn't.
Then, there is a Barbi-esque ballroom with no regard to Skyrim esthetics. Because fantasy equivalent of Vikings will definitely have Louis the Sun King style balls combined with 20th century prom dresses.
Add an overall misoginistic attitude towards women generally and Dragonborn specifically. Which doesn't seem to be a thing in either TES or DnD.
Basically, i have only one question - is SMR's main writer okay? Because this mod feels like a cleverly disguised cry for help from a person stuck in abusive relationship.

Fun fact, I read a post from a x writer on this mod, and apparently the lore for Bishop according to the mod author is that he's a virgin. I am not kidding.

Now, if you play on PC and kinda like Cael, might I point you to Valgus from Interesting NPCs. Because they share the same voice actor and Valgus is much better written. Don't particularly care for Valgus's dead wife backstory, but I digress.
What I don't care for is the volume. I can barely hear him over the game music.
Though, I mainly just have him around for extra heals, since I play male anyway.
I think the former dark brotherhood assassin griffith is too
I love any reviews of this Mod, it is so badly written that I can't get enough of it's mockery...it sustains me!
Thank you to you and GirlSlapsUrAzz for these breakdowns. You have put into words the uneasy feelings this mod gave me when I once dowloaded it, not knowing what I was truly in for after taking only a bare cursory glance at the mod page. Bishop immediately turned me off with his insecure alpha-wolf man bullshite. I messed with him a bit to try to make him as angry as possible and make him just walk off, and when that didn't work because he's a clingy shit I just uninstalled the mod.
I hadn't heard of Bishop until yesterday but my god, he's leagues worse as a romance option for dragonborn than Sofia. And she's pretty terrible.
I know this is old but it didn't just lift characters it lifted lines from a different Neverwinter mod waaay back. I was on a website that modded Infinity Engine games and the old Baldur's Gate games... so this is ancient but little of what the SkyrimRomance author did was original work. As I remember the old Bishop mod used in game code dev notes to flesh out the official Casivir Romance since I don't think Bishop was an actual romance, this sort of made it a more elaborate love triangle so that maybe. It also had an kinda weird expansion in the excellent Mask of the Betrayer. I sort of think in the Bishop mod, he was still a dick though, but a counterpoint to Casivir who was the official in party game romance so they bickered more and idk, I didn't hate it then. I don't know if it would hold up now.
Thank you for your criticisms of this mod. I am writing a romantic game and I'm trying to avoid making my love interests terrible (unless they're meant to be) so your commentary is very useful to me.

Was the Spider Deadra a servant of Mephala? Because her/his sphere includes secret sex (affairs, cheating, using sex as a tool to assassinate someone) so a Deadra from her/his realm having sex with you is not unlikely. Espeacially if she/he wanted something from you or does something shifty to you afterwards like stealing your shit or trying to kill you or dumping your ass somewhere you did not want to be but they did. If they just have sex with you that could still be canon since it's not like Deadra are all necessarily homogenous in thought but it would be exceptionally lore friendly if the sex was a lure.
Mephala incidentally is said to appear as a hermaphrodite to represent two things: the duality of her/his spheres AND the fact that being able to seduce ALL mortals is integral to their nature. Vivec was the same though he was more male presenting whereas Mephala is more female presenting. Given Vivec generally tried to use a gentler hand when using Mephala's spheres I suppose you could say that's alittle sexist but I think it's a reach. It's more likely Mephala is more female presenting because the myth of the Black Widow spider is female presenting (I say myth it is true, but what people don't know is there are breeds of spider where the male is the sexual aggressor and Mephala's spider half is not necessarily modelled on a black widow.)
Side note now, Casavir actually had a fully complete romance. It’s a different mod tho. Cael is also apparently getting one but it’s still being worked on

Meh... Vigilant was plagiarised too... Dark Souls... like, literally. Even the arms and armor are the exact same... I can see why people hate the mod but I don't. I had a ton of laughs playing it. I also laughed when women were arrested for self-enjoyment in publid during the debut of 50 Shades on the silver screen. Even more so when actual women do admit they want men like this. So...yeah. It's more of laughing at Bishop and what he represents. And of course his obnoxious attitude. Honestly, the mods that trully cocern me are the ones in which the female followers all have the "Young Eager" voice and look suspiciously young, while wearing barely anything and having oversexualized physical assets. Those concern me because there's some deep dark desires from the mod authors. Bishop's just like the Alpha males I laugh at daily.
I'm so excited for part two. You really let this mod have it and I, for one, love that.

Nothing to do with the Skyrim romance mod - in the Sven and Faendal quest I'm pretty sure there's a way to make Camilla hate both of them but I could be wrong (but if I'm remembering correctly it's the best option because both of them suck)

This is a really good analysis. I'd personally change the approach through. You've stated that the world of TES has basically no gender roles, and therefore no misogyny, and when there is misogyny its due to write bias. I think that needs to be flipped around. The choice to write a pseudo-historical world with no gender roles IS the bias. An enormous bias that TES has leaned towards more and more overtime with the elimination of sex differences in stats. Including gender expectations (like Svens 'I want you to be a housewife' poem) is not bias - that's totally historically ordinary (an still ordinary in non-western societies). Also, acknowledging sex differences or having gender roles is not misogyny in and of itself. Mikael being annoying and pursuing a woman is not misogyny, its an irritating but typical sexual behavior of some males. It's not a societal construct that men pursue sex with women to a sometimes annoying extent.
You have nailed this mod on the head, I am in the middle of removing voiced audio files and changing the dialogue to suit my needs, so anything that is on screen, Is what I would expect to see.
