This game came out when I started middle school and ended when I was a freshman. The memories of hanging with friends and playing online over the pandemic will never leave me.
That really is amazing to hear that this game has touched so many other people than just myself and my group of friends. May those precious memories last forever!
2020 will always be my favorite year of smash, i had so much fun playing it with friends online and steve/sephiroth's reveals really made that year for me. 2021 sora's reveal though was... i'm already nostalgic for it... that era of my life was so magical for so many reasons and i really miss it.
Totally agree, that really was a magical time. Although me personally I would say the lead up to the game in 2018 and the first few dlc fighters in 2019 was the best time overall. Totally personal though. I will say though, out of all the dlc reveals, hell all of the reveals. Steve and Sephiroth's were hands down some of the best.

I mean, lots of other Nintendo characters made sense to put in Smash… for the base game (also, Waluigi being an assist trophy yet again basically killed his chances, so I personally don’t understand why anyone thought he had a chance) Did they really overdo it with the Fire Emblem characters over the years? Absolutely, but also, I’m pretty sure Fire Emblem was always one of the major Nintendo series within Japan (and got many character requests from Japanese fans back in the “if there was a Smash 2” poll, moreso than the likes of Donkey Kong and Metroid), and nowadays, while it’s still not quite a super “mainstream” series worldwide, it’s definitely now a bigger series than, say, Metroid If a character like Bandana Waddle Dee or Dixie Kong got in as part of one of the Fighters Passes, I’m pretty sure many people would be wondering why they weren’t just in the base game to begin with (since, as a Nintendo character, there’d be minimal to no licensing issues to deal with that could warrant them being saved for DLC), so it makes sense for the few first-party DLC character choices to be ones from recent games that released after SSBU’s project plan was completed That, combined with the whole “rotating cast” series thing consistently getting a characrer from their most recent game, means that Byleth and Pyra/Mythra did actually make sense as some of the few Nintendo characters in the DLC (because they never would’ve made it into the base roster) Also, I know anime artstyle JRPGs tend to have sword-wielding protagonists and more “realistic”, very similar visual styles to each other (and that’s probably why these types of character additions are so controversial with the average Nintendo fan), but many of the stories, tones, and even sometimes gameplay can be just as different from each other as any platformer or adventure game, and most other “mainstream” Nintendo games tend to be pretty light on story (even Zelda to some extent), so they can very much fill that niche
Still early in watching the vid, but you completely undersold the Brawl-era of the Smash Dojo. Daily posts and updates drip feeding us the entire game. I would check the site daily before school, and on the days where a new character, stage or item was announced, it was all my friend group would talk about that day. What evolved from that was the full character trailers of the Smash 4-era.
So I actually am only vaguely familiar with brawl's dojo. And honestly I thought that only really occurred with Smash 4. But wow didn't know that before, that is very interesting and cool!

Have to disagree on your Xenoblade opinion. Could the reveal have been better? Yes. Were they a bad edition that didn’t deserve it? No. You can’t say that about any Smash character. It’s all opinion at the end of the day.

It's part of his design. Disney was all for putting Sora in Smash. They do own him, after all. (That was confirmed.) They consult Square on certain topics, because they're the developers. (Though, Disney DOES get pissed when Square uses the franchise without permission.)

I was recently rewatching old Smash 4 directs since the game is turning 10 this year and my goodness a lot has changed within those 10 years, I’d love to see you do a video on your hype leading up to Smash 4’s release, which characters you were excited for, the new content, etc. Also I’d like to give a shout-out to Etika and his famous Mewtwo Reaction from the 50 Fact Extravaganza of Smash 4.
That definitely is a good idea, however I really wasn't around smash 4 around that time which is what I think made ultimate so special. I might have a few friends that were though. Maybe something will come of that. And rest in peace to Etika
What makes Ultimate special to me was it being the first Smash Game that's I followed from beginning to end, sure I was around for Smash 4's hype cycle but I never really payed attention to the updates until the end of the games life, but with Ultimate, I was in 7th Grade when *EVERYONE IS HERE!* was revealed and in 11th Grade when Sora ended things off, it'll definitely be a gaming experience I'll always cherish *also sorry for the whole yap session, I try to keep my comments short but I'm really passionate about this game and got carried away* 💀
All good, that's amazing to hear that this game left a lasting impact on you as it did me. I have a very similar experience, I saw some of the smash 4 stuff around the time it came out, but Ultimate was the first game I followed from beginning to end.
One thing I think you underplay a bit is people's hype for certain characters, I remember when ultimate was first being teased that there were some people that were ecstatic for snake's return, me included. I definitely wanted him a bit more than ice climbers 😅 Daisy was a very welcome addition too! I think a really interesting thing to see with ultimate was that more so than any other smash game (Correct me if I'm wrong, I mostly only got to see wii u's release cycle because I was a kid when brawl came out), ultimate had probably one of the most diverse rosters, which also caused a bit of friction in the community too. For the past few smash games it seems like everyone's been accepting or even excited about all the characters in the game, but with ultimate I haven't seen more complaining about certain additions to the cast in any of the previous entries. Its crazy how much people got salty about byleth (or incineror, cause the leaks didn't come true.). Heck even a very small minority complains about Joker cause he's also seen as an anime character. There were a lot of picks that were just divisive for one reason or another, between demographics. I noticed a lot of older folks didn't like steves inclusion because "Ew, zoomer game" and vice versa; younger kids going "Who?" to simon's inclusion. And the america/japan divide too with hero...so I'm just glad now that the cycle is over people aren't whining about it anymore. Maybe it always existed and the internet just amplified it, who knows. Overall though, even if there were some characters I'd still like to see, ultimate is the biggest and best celebration of gaming there is. And the excitement that was generated was well worth it even if it brought out some toxic ones. I think it spoiled us too much actually, I wouldn't really mind seeing some cuts in the next one because it would bring back that exclusivity feeling about smash. Certain games having certain characters. But time will tell how that goes, and great video. Even though its been 5 years, it still feels like there's stuff to discover with the sheer volume of content we were given.
You make some very good arguments here. Looking back, there was a lot of complaining about a lot of characters especially the dlc (I'm also guilty of this). I feel like every smash game has had its vocal critics, I think a lot of that was amplified due to this probably being the last one Sakurai himself would be involved in. Personally, I feel like byleth and pyra did deserve criticism for not being the Nintendo characters we wanted. But in terms of all the 3rd party fighters, despite how much or how little I wanted them as a part of the roaster I still respected their inclusion. Very thought provoking comment!
The smash community is insane. I really don't get how you guys can get mad over a fighter being added to the roster. You can bitch all you want about Byleth or Pyra & Mythra and being underwhelmed by Hero's inclusion but it doesn't change the fact that many people wanted these characters in the game. Guess what I was happy that Byleth was added (it was one of the characters I wanted) and I was happy with Pyra, hero, fucking Steve (even though I don't care about him). I was able to enjoy every fighter reveal like many other sane people. It's not just about you guys. Not every new fighter is going to please everyone, that's part of the game. I been with the franchise with the original N64, and is the reason why I buy the Nintendo consoles (GameCube, Wii, 3DS, Switch) skipped the Wii U because it shared same roster, but I'm ready for the next Smash for the switch successor
