@CastleRene I thought that was what melee was going to be before the reveal. But it's a game that found the right niche in fighting game to stand alone and thr formula stayed the same. If it went 3d it would have to follow in powerstones foot steps and as fun as it was it would be hard to work out as a tournament fighter otherwise the soulcaliber root or Marvel V Capcom tag team. And 1v1 battles only.
I honestly don’t think we get Smash Ultimate Deluxe we’re getting a new smash probably in year 3 or 4 of Switch 2s life. Plus getting all the third party’s to have all their content included again including Disney, would be way too much for a port of Smash Ultimate when at that point just make a new smash.
I think he might be working on a couple projects simultaneously. Maybe heading this new project for release during the Switch 2 Launch Year while the next Smash starts early development. Either that or he's already working knee deep on the next game.

It wouldn't make sense for him to be pitching what is ultimately (no pun intended) an inavitability, such as a new smash gamer, and a simple port wouldn't be something he'd be that excited about. It seems plausible to me that a new Smash is indeed in development, but that he entrusted other people to lead this project. Maybe it'd be some sort of reboot ? As in, a game that rethinks some standards of the series, like historical characters being included from the get go if they're not really relevant culturaly anymore (like jigglypuff), or have a base roster with characters people asked for when there was the vote, or plays a bit differently. It'd for sure be a risk though.

Another Smash is enivitable, but it just depends if it's going to be a good successor to Ultimate with or without Sakurai. Hopefully he does help out with the game to make it a good sequel, but another Kirby game or even another Kid Icarus game would be nice too. That "assuming we're able to get it made" alone confirms it isn't Smash. And given the console is launching with Mario Kart, I highly doubt Sakurai is working on Smash at the moment. Smash might be in early development, but given Ultimate is gonna be backwards compatible, and is likely untoppable according to Sakurai himself, I see Smash being saved for after Sakurai is done with his current project, because I doubt Nintendo wouldn't want a new Smash game made for the next console, but saving it for closer to the middle of the console's lifespan feels like the best call in my opinion, that way their fatigue of not having a new Smash really kicks in and the game gets more hype and thus more sales.

I think you are too readily taking Sakurai’s words at face value. He is always exceedingly humble and never gasses something up until after all the work is finished. With that in mind, I think him saying he’s unsure if they’ll be able to get the game made is no different from him saying he won’t be able to make a next Smash game (he’s said this like 80 times over the past 20 years). I have very little doubt that Smash 6 is launching either 2026 or 2027, there’s been other signs pointing to it aside from what Sakurai’s said.

All i want for a future smash game, even if its just a deluxe is more final fantasy representation, by that i mean games other than 7, they are just as important to gaming as 7 is, i would absolutely love to see other iconic locations such as the sunleth waterscape, balaamb garden, and even besaid or zanarkand coming to the game as stages, i dont think we need any characters.
a Smash Bros Ultimate deluxe is literally impossible, the reason is because it will be almost impossible to keep all third party characters in the game, the legal and copyright deals all have to be extended which is easier said than done, especially for characters like Sora, smash bros ultimates point is everyone is here what is just not possible for a second game, even for a remaster/deluxe version
Sakurai stated he would not work on a new smash bros, so I have my doubts about that. The poor man wants to rest. So if anything, Nintendo will just update and create a port for Ultimate. The information I’m about to explain is from a source so PLEASE TAKE THIS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT. Apparently Super Smash Brothers for the Switch 2 was already in the works from a company named Kyoto-based gaming company. Smash 6 is not only going to play its original mode, but there is going to be a *3D Fighting Arcade Style* . And the characters in this next installment look different. Everyone from Ultimate is back, with some Characters having re works. The new game is going to have major overhauls and changes for the likes of Link, Samus, Cloud, Ganondorf, Ryu and Ken, Kazuma, Bayonetta, and Donkey Kong (which the design is based off of Mario Kart). Also most characters in the game will have reworks of their movesets. Link and Ganon from TotK for an example. Trophies are returning as well. The rumor alleges they have detailed descriptions and are dished out for completing missions, playing Arcade mode, and other random tasks. The leak mentions an Adventure mode, which is said to be like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s world map and Spirit fights, but with Subspace Emissary story and cutscenes. To this end, there is supposedly over an hour of cutscenes like Super Smash Brawl. There will also be new characters: Waluigi, Toon Zelda, Noah and Mio from the Xenoblade Chronicles series, Armorouge and Ceruledge from Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and Sol Badguy from Guilty Gear. Deluxes Ult with all of those IPs involved... I don't think that is happening any time soon.
a Smash Bros Ultimate deluxe is literally impossible, the reason is because it will be almost impossible to keep all third party characters in the game, the legal and copyright deals all have to be extended which is easier said than done, especially for characters like Sora, smash bros ultimates point is everyone is here what is just not possible for a second game, even for a remaster/deluxe version

Sakurai stated he would not work on a new smash bros, so I have my doubts about that. The poor man wants to rest. So if anything, Nintendo will just update and create a port for Ultimate.
As for what he is working on, most likely a new franchise altogether, either a fighting game, or something new entirely

Since Ultimate will be playable on the Switch 2 I would honestly just take a few added modes like break the target and a few new Characters. I don’t even need out of this World choices Ray-Man, Crash Bandicoot and Lara Croft

I could see us getting Ultimate on the switch 2, like "Ultimate DX", but with a few upgrades and overhauls, comes with ALL previous dlc, and then maybe they announce more DLC waves?

Its clear the way he is talking that its not smash lol (not to say a smash game is not in the works) it sounds like something he is passionate about but could be hard to get made. Smash is a no brainer and would not be news if it were being made. Probably another Kid Icarus or a new game he wants to make.

Off topic but I want to say something that you should go over and this is Smash related.
Smash rumors are actually back yet again after so long. The information I’m about to explain is from a source so PLEASE TAKE THIS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT.
Apparently Super Smash Brothers for the Switch 2 was already in the works from a company named Kyoto-based gaming company.
Smash 6 is not only going to play its original mode, but there is going to be a *3D Fighting Arcade Style* . And the characters in this next installment look different.
Everyone from Ultimate is back, with some Characters having re works. The new game is going to have major overhauls and changes for the likes of Link, Samus, Cloud, Ganondorf, Ryu and Ken, Kazuma, Bayonetta, and Donkey Kong (which the design is based off of Mario Kart). Also most characters in the game will have reworks of their movesets. Link and Ganon from TotK for an example.
Trophies are returning as well. The rumor alleges they have detailed descriptions and are dished out for completing missions, playing Arcade mode, and other random tasks.
The leak mentions an Adventure mode, which is said to be like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s world map and Spirit fights, but with Subspace Emissary story and cutscenes. To this end, there is supposedly over an hour of cutscenes like Super Smash Brawl.
There will also be new characters: Waluigi, Toon Zelda, Noah and Mio from the Xenoblade Chronicles series, Armorouge and Ceruledge from Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and Sol Badguy from Guilty Gear. It’s added that Paper Mario is being planned as the first DLC character for day one buyers like Piranha Plant was for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
It is set to release around Summer of next year. (2026)
