  • Hey guys! It seems like it's been a long time since I posted a normal video but I will have two for you this week! In this video I am talking about phonics instruction. I share with you what worked best with my intervention group last year and the format that I used. Time to get ready to tackle phonics again because the school year is getting closer and closer! I am also introducing my new store and newsletter so make sure you follow the links below to go and check those out. I hope you all find this video really useful and let me know what you think!
    Teaching letters and sounds is one of my favorite topics to teach in reading. I have compiled a unit of some of my favorite activities to help teach each letter. You can use these activities in both small and whole group! This unit is meant to be hands-on and interactive.
    July 25% Bundle - Phonics Bundle

    - Kinesthetic and handwriting practice sheet
    - Font sort
    - Initial Sound Sort {mats included}
    - Vowels Come with Medial/Initial Sound Sort {mats Included}
    - Individual student strips to practice the sound and letter recognition {mats included}
    - Song to sing and practice the letter & sound

    I love this video. I'm sure, I'm gonna be using some of your great ideas in my classroom next year, too.
    We use a chart with the whole alphabet on it and there's a picture for each letter ... so children who want to write "apple" look at the chart and search the picture "apple" for a and "penguin" for p etc., but I like the idea of trade names :)

    This is wonderful! I'm going to use this for intervention with my ESL students. Is there potential to get a blank template for the environmental print chart because some of the items won't apply in Aus? Not to worry if it's too difficult.

    • @BridgingLiteracy

      Are you wanting to know how to make the frame of the lesson plan rather than the contents?

      I've taken classes where the frame has been briefly described to me, but I feel like it would be very useful to see someone as detailed as you really demonstrate what they are saying. So yes please! That would be helpful :)

    所以 美国人也要用这个来学读单词吗 作为一个在学英语的中国人 表示很好奇:
    so do us peoples also used these methods to read the world? as a Chinese who is learning English, i am curiously about that.

    Thank you so much for this video!! I literally took nots during this! Ha! How many children do you typically have in a small group? Is there a magic number for this or does it depend on how many of that level you have? I use 'smitten with first' 's phonics friends for my vowel sounds and it was a real game-changed in my class last year, can't wait to build on that with your ideas!

      @BridgingLiteracy  8 лет назад

      Thank you so much! 😊 I am so glad this is helpful. You do t want to have any more than 6 but I prefer to have 5. It's a good "magic" number. I've never heard of vowel friends. I will have to look that one up!

      @aeelayyan 8 лет назад

      +The Lettered Classroom if you have any ELL's in your class phonics friends make a world of difference. It's a way to really perfect that sound and they are always referring back to it whenever they are stumped.

    I would like to ask you about those student's who have struggling with letter identification for several years and still I am unable to get them to make the connection. Needless to say that reading has not began either. Just reaching out to you.

      For kids that really struggle with this, associating an action can be a great scaffolding tool. So for a as an example you would show them a picture of ants with the letter a and they would rub (imaginary) ants off their shoulder and say the /a/ sound repeatedly. Everytime they see an a they should make the action. Struggling students will nearly always remember the action first and this will trigger their memory of the sound. - here's a video example of some actions but you can create your own. ruclips.net/video/yVyry9jpVjI/видео.html
