Another thing I do when teaching phonics with my students is we will have an anchor chart paper up with whatever we are working on, example Sl blend...then as my students are reading independently or working in reading groups if they find a word that matches the specific week skill they write it on the anchor chart (as long as that word is not already on the list). At the end of the week we read all the words they found.

I'm an ESL teacher and I think that teaching reading to children has a whole world of methodology that applies to it just like ESL and it also takes experience to be able to do it well.

What are your thoughts on teaching the 6 syllable types? I teach first and we are revamping our phonics instruction. We use lessons based on Orton Gillingham techniques and teach the rules of syllables - closed syllables, open syllables, magic e, soldier rule, long spelling after short vowels, etc. I've got your poems and your print and play phonics games. They are great! Thanks for the video!

Hi Lori! Yes the games all cover the same skills as the poems but there are many more poems because they focus on specific patterns. For example the games cover short vowel CVC words (most games include at least 2 vowels being reviewed) but for the poems there are tons of different CVC patterns and word families which are reviewed (-ad, -ig, op, -ot, etc.) as well as some poems with a variety of CVC (a) words. I hope that helps!

English is my second language. I don’t understand all the analyzing and picking apart all the details . Beside knowing the vowels are moved one vowel ahead in Dutch, I was always just told that English doesn’t make any sense! That meant learning how to write and memorize the spelling. There is no logical explanation for the difference in pronunciation between tough, though and through. I learned English as a child through games, songs and poems. Rhythm and rhyme is so important for a child under 9. I spell better than the average American without ever being exposed to phonics or any reading specialist. Please teach students about nature, culture and art instead of boring them to tears with fragments when they are still believing in Santa Claus. It’s ok in high school to analyze. Just Not in elementary school. Teach them to LOVE language through stories! And don’t dumb it down. Education is about reaching for the sky!
This was a much needed video for me and my students! I teach third grade, however there are many students who are significantly behind in phonics. My school does not offer a phonics curriculum for third grade. What would you recommend for a scope and sequence?
Do you think it would be appropriate to add the phonemes from the previous week to the games? For example on the roll and color game, add a 2 reviews sounds to 4 new sound examples? if not, how do you reinforce their prior learning? Thanks!

Hi Dawn! I don't have a scope and sequence for kindergarten specifically. I do have one that I used in 1st grade if you want to email me (susanjonesteaching@gmail.com) I can share that with you! I can tell you that in kinder, we spent many weeks at the beginning of the year focusing just on individual letter sounds, then many more weeks blending CVC words before learning digraphs! If you google "kindergarten phonics scope and sequence" there are quite a few online you may want to pull from!

The sound of "P" is 'p-eh' (audible) the long sound of "A" is 'ahhh"(audible) the audible sound of L is simply "lll" The audible the sound of S is "sssss" Lets put the sounds together now: l - a - p is lap, put an an s in front now kids its "slap" Next lets try mixing them up now say "Pal" lets put the s on the end: say Pals next lets try this L-A-P again with an s on the end. Too much on theory anyone can teach a kid to read and write with few exceptions - it's simple - kids are pre-wired to learn easily. Teaching is a trade, not a profession. I know this because I tutored kids who had poor teachers. I wasn't trained but they were - I did better than they did by the kids evaluations (a little more advanced - math through calculus as well as HS chemistry and physics - oh I was only a volunteer - no pay.
