Hi mate. I have a large square bullseye type patio to lay out of 600 by 600 porcelain in alternating colours. Would you lay it in straight lines or find the centre and work you way out in circles? Thanks for your help.

You showed the level bubble on the long wall for adding the wood height guide. Where should the bubble be for the width wood height guide? Would it be level? Thanks 😊
I have a concrete path in my front garden that is level. But it looks cack. Is it possible to put paving slabs on top without putting down a sub base? Great video.
Most likely you will be able to yes as there should be hard-core underneath the concrete as well and at the end of the day it’s always about the base 👍🏴

Scotty, here's another crap details question from the Welshman in England! When attaching the batons to the walls what size screws, rawl plugs and drill bits are you using. My effort just fell off the wall! 🤣 When I eventually get this finished I'll invite you over for a BBQ and beers!
@@tidybrickslandscaping used Rawlplug nylon frame fixings (80x80mm) in the end after forensically looking at your video. So here’s the thing, being a mere mortal, I didn’t even know that hammer in frame fixings were even a thing until today! So I pre drilled the CLS batons with an 8mm wood bit at each end and then levelled the baton with a long sprit level and the. Using an 8mm masonry drill bit and a hammer drill used the existing holes in the baton to position the respective holes in the block work wall and then used the frame fixings with a hammer to fix the baton to the wall - not forgetting the spacers (made from a cut down piece of CLS).
Hi Russ I jointed the patio with a slurry grout very tricky stuff and you can lay tiles on anything really but they won’t stick to just sand it needs cement to stick too 👍🏴
Hello, I have a 30m2 beam and block patio area, built as part of my extension. I’m thinking of ideas and ways in which to finish this area and how to approach it with the block and beam. The B&B naturally has a little flex in it therefore I want to proceed with the correct method to ensure tiles and joints don’t crack. I’m looking at a porcelain tile finish. Will this require a fibre screed like I had internally then to lay the porcelain with a cement mix? Advice would be useful from anyone who has experience of this. Thanks
I’ve never laid a patio on block and beam before if you could possibly take any flex out of it that would always help if you can reach underneath for some support if you can lay on a cement bed and you should be fine 👍🏴
Hello mate, brilliant video as always! wish you was down this way todo our garden! Do you have any videos of how you did the wall? we have a similar project we are doing a small retaining wall for, do you just put the mot base in and compact it or do you need to put concrete in first? so many say different things.
Speak to my friends at Tilerstools for the solution they showed me some products last week when I had my table saw serviced. Mention I sent you thanks 👍🏴
Hey Scott great video and lovely work! I was considering doing a patio off the back of our new house but I'm a bit nervous. The garden is on a slope so will have to build a small retaining wall around it, the question I have is do the retaining walls coming off the house have to have a fall off as well? Not sure if this is a silly question? Thanks
Yes to a certain degree but then depends if you wanted a step at the end of the patio or you had a feature wall but preferably yes include the full so the water can run straight off the patio over to the lawn area 👍🏴
Just wondering what's the gap from bottom of level to mot at the start of fixing the baton ??is it 20mm tile thickness + 40mm for mortar bed ,,great video from Ireland 👌
Should the string line be sat on top of the tile or just above to make it level? I'm attempting a small floating patio so I won't have the wall to attach to
Ideally streamline slightly higher than the tile just ping the line now and then to see if it sits well. If you could rig something up to attach line 2 is that would be a great help 👍🏴
Not all Marshall installers are the cream of the crop, the ones that done my back patio done a pretty shitty job to be honest. For a start the pointing was different levels and thicknesses, the steps aren't the same height, the brick work wasn't that good and the existing drains are not level with the path but below so a possible trip hazard. I'm always blown away with what you achieve and the little details you do to make the job that much better. I'm just hoping when the time comes to get the front sorted you will be back to full health and ready to start the patios and drives again.
Sorry to hear about the issues you’ve had with the installer on your project !! There’s always one hey and as for my recovery well 2 more weeks in a cast then 6 weeks in a boot and hopefully a spring in my step after that 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping Can't wait to see you back in action, will definitely get in touch when i need the work done, mostly out the front good access and a little around the side. Llantwit Major couple of miles from Cowbridge.
Lovely job done there mate! If i just want to lay a few slabs or paving blocks as a pathway would i still need a good sub-base (type 1) or can i just go with a sharp sand n cement mix on top of some firm ground?
Nice video Would you recommend a easy joint type product in a porcelain patio (5mm joint) Or always grout it Looked into flow point but av lost my nerve with it
There are a few products on the market for porcelain that work as easy joint. Easy joint do one, castacrete works as it’s a very fine compound(won’t work for butted tiles) nexus is another manufacturer Have been supplying them for over 12 months via the merchant I do the buying for
Depends on how accurate you are with the concrete finish if it like glass yeh maybe but cement will give you tolerance to make it proper flat. Hope that helps 👍🏴
Hi Scott. Hope you're well. Quick question for you. I'm building an outdoor kitchen with patio area. The kitchen itself needs a 4" concrete blab, whereas the patio will just be a full bed on type 1. Should I build he slab first then put in the type 1, or whacker the type 1 all over, and then dig out 4" where the slab is to go? Cheers mate.
Do you have a link to the nylon line and also the setting out pins you used? Also, do you set out the levels of the patio before or after mot sub-base?
Hi set the levels before the MOT today with steel pins each corner and this string line. www.toolstation.com/ragni-hi-vis-brickline/p36745?store=MM&gclid=CjwKCAjw6qqDBhB-EiwACBs6x1LWINjxDD964fOgfVAQ1OAmGJ4jIG9mz-y_EHz6YTvAW9vcz-CAUxoCE-wQAvD_BwE

Great video.. Two things to ask.. Is that primer just cement? I was going to pave directly onto concrete that forms the base of my back yard.. Is that advisable and is the mix still 4:1..? Cheers mate.
Hello mate, I've just taken some old patio slabs off and underneath seems to be concrete. Does this mean i can go straight on top with mortar and tiles without having to do sub base? Or do I need to get rid of concrete base? Thanks
All depends I’d say drill a,few holes in the concrete and see how thick it is first if it’s 100mm then your good to go. Also if so pressure wash it free of any dirt and cement prime the concrete first before you lay your bed 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping alls i’m saying is your much easier to watch than johnny boy both of you are great tradesman but i think you are better to watch than greentop landscaping as he pays more attention on hiding his bald spots on his head than he does on his actual work

This never happens, Surely I Am governed by the size of the 900x600 slab , Because if I tighten the joints up they won’t line up on the edges Then... Cheers for any help cos it’s bothering me!!!
Hi dackz It’s a common problem using sandstone as it’s a natural product there can differ in size so I always aim for 10mm joints normally I use porcelain and the sizes are always the same so I use 5mm You can also cuts some slabs down after you’ve finished and open some joints up with a disc cutter if need be. Great channel lots of info 👍 I’m laying a rectangular shaped patio half way down my garden which is long and narrow. Does it matter whether the slope is front to back or side to side? The short side of the patio is across the garden. Thanks
If it’s really narrow and like 1 tile wide you could level with it. Otherwise as long as the water can run off onto a grass area it’s fine 😂🏴
Hi mate. I have a large square bullseye type patio to lay out of 600 by 600 porcelain in alternating colours. Would you lay it in straight lines or find the centre and work you way out in circles? Thanks for your help.
I think I would find the centre and work outwards and then you definitely wouldn’t possibly have a cut in the middle if you had your measurements wrong 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping cool thanks for the advice.
Agreed, if you work any other way, you will end up having to trim or you may have bigger joint gaps.
True skill and knowledge
Thanks Mike glad you enjoyed the video mate 👍🏴
What do you use to shoot the footage, if you don't mind me asking? Do you use a digital camera or a phone? The sound and picture quality is very good.
Good question I’m using iPhone 12 pro video and picture quality is amazing I don’t think I’ll buy it digital camera ever again 👍😂
@@tidybrickslandscaping Thanks for the info. Good to know how you do it. Time to save up!
Great video. Thanks. Could you please tell me if its advisable to construct this in a similar way for a driveway? Thanks

You showed the level bubble on the long wall for adding the wood height guide. Where should the bubble be for the width wood height guide? Would it be level? Thanks 😊
Yes across the back and front always level just the sides are different 👍🏴
I have a concrete path in my front garden that is level. But it looks cack. Is it possible to put paving slabs on top without putting down a sub base? Great video.
Most likely you will be able to yes as there should be hard-core underneath the concrete as well and at the end of the day it’s always about the base 👍🏴
How do you avoid the cement staining the slate? have seen that happen before

Scotty, here's another crap details question from the Welshman in England! When attaching the batons to the walls what size screws, rawl plugs and drill bits are you using. My effort just fell off the wall! 🤣 When I eventually get this finished I'll invite you over for a BBQ and beers!
Pre drill the holes and make sure you use plugs takes time but a absolute fail safe way of doing it for the diy er 👍🏴

Hi mate are you using the DJI Pocket 2 came for the tracking etc. Or is it a different one?
Actually it’s the Pivo not to shabby 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping ah right cheers mate
Hi scott, did you finish the pointing with sand or mortar and can you lay 600 x 600 pavers on compacted sharp sand instead of cement mix
Hi Russ I jointed the patio with a slurry grout very tricky stuff and you can lay tiles on anything really but they won’t stick to just sand it needs cement to stick too 👍🏴
@tidybrickslandscaping thanks for replying Scott, great video 👍
Hello,
I have a 30m2 beam and block patio area, built as part of my extension.
Hi Sir, nice video! One question: what is the product you lay your tiles on? Is it mortar?
Yes 4 sharp sand and 1 cement mix 👍🏴
Hello mate, brilliant video as always! wish you was down this way todo our garden!
Do you have any videos of how you did the wall? we have a similar project we are doing a small retaining wall for, do you just put the mot base in and compact it or do you need to put concrete in first? so many say different things.
No MOT needed under the concrete for the wall only the patio needs mot 👍🏴
Hi mate great work. Do you find any issues with laying limestone and pointing when it comes to getting stains out? Do you preseal?
Speak to my friends at Tilerstools for the solution they showed me some products last week when I had my table saw serviced.
Mention I sent you thanks 👍🏴
Hi. Love the videos. Could you please tell me what it is you brush into the tile? Thanks
That’s a cement primer helps bond the 2 together 👍🏴
Hey Scott great video and lovely work! I was considering doing a patio off the back of our new house but I'm a bit nervous. The garden is on a slope so will have to build a small retaining wall around it, the question I have is do the retaining walls coming off the house have to have a fall off as well? Not sure if this is a silly question? Thanks
Yes to a certain degree but then depends if you wanted a step at the end of the patio or you had a feature wall but preferably yes include the full so the water can run straight off the patio over to the lawn area 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping Thanks a million for the advice Scott , much appreciated , cheers
Hi, great video, do you have a link please to the spacer/clips you use (that you kick off afterwards) ? Thanks.
Here we go hope that helps ask for Jim say tidybricks sent you tilerstools.co.uk/product/landscapers-levelling-kit/

Just wondering what's the gap from bottom of level to mot at the start of fixing the baton ??is it 20mm tile thickness + 40mm for mortar bed ,,great video from Ireland 👌
60mm size of my boot 👍🏴
Legend for these videos! So much more detailed than others and the efforts you go through to show it is too draw
Thanks for watching Harry glad you’re enjoying my videos mate much appreciated 👍🏴
You could depending on the ground e.g. hard clay but otherwise you do risk the chance of it subsiding and cracking 👍🏴
Nice video
Would you recommend a easy joint type product in a porcelain patio (5mm joint)
Or always grout it
Looked into flow point but av lost my nerve with it
That easy joint grout isn’t for porcelain you have to kind of use the stuff we use 👍🏴 sorry
There are a few products on the market for porcelain that work as easy joint.
Easy joint do one, castacrete works as it’s a very fine compound(won’t work for butted tiles) nexus is another manufacturer
Have been supplying them for over 12 months via the merchant I do the buying for
Please can you advise, if dry compact bed is ok to lay tiles or fully set sand & cement?
It must be a hardcore base of some kind for the strength then laid on a wet cement bed to bond 👍🏴
Hi, very helpful video. Can you please confirm how deep should the Type 1 be? Is it 50 mm or more? Thanks.
100mm type 1 mot for patios lay 50mm then compact then add the other 50mm and compact 👍🏴
hahaha im not answering my phone at moment ,, fb page is killing me too. people are knocking on my door arrrgh!!!!! another good video scott Henry
Thanks Max glad you’re enjoying my videos mate 👍🏴
Can i do this
Geo membrane
Mot type 100mm
Dpm membrane
100 mm concrete
Wait 3 weeks
Lay down slabs with exterior glue
Depends on how accurate you are with the concrete finish if it like glass yeh maybe but cement will give you tolerance to make it proper flat.
Hope that helps 👍🏴
Hi Scott. Hope you're well. Quick question for you. I'm building an outdoor kitchen with patio area. The kitchen itself needs a 4" concrete blab, whereas the patio will just be a full bed on type 1. Should I build he slab first then put in the type 1, or whacker the type 1 all over, and then dig out 4" where the slab is to go? Cheers mate.
Hi and yes I’d build the slab first for shaw get it done so you’ve got another level to whack too then every little helps I guess 👍🏴
Do you have a link to the nylon line and also the setting out pins you used? Also, do you set out the levels of the patio before or after mot sub-base?
Hi set the levels before the MOT today with steel pins each corner and this string line. www.toolstation.com/ragni-hi-vis-brickline/p36745?store=MM&gclid=CjwKCAjw6qqDBhB-EiwACBs6x1LWINjxDD964fOgfVAQ1OAmGJ4jIG9mz-y_EHz6YTvAW9vcz-CAUxoCE-wQAvD_BwE

@@tidybrickslandscaping I'd imagine thats tough to avoid considering. Your a true craftsman none the less.
Great video.. Two things to ask.. Is that primer just cement? I was going to pave directly onto concrete that forms the base of my back yard.. Is that advisable and is the mix still 4:1..? Cheers mate.
Yes I suppose the primer is cement based and yes 4 to 1 ratio sharp sand is the preferable mix 👍🏴

Sod the string I just use a straight edge across the slabs but interesting way to do it
It’s not the way I would normally do it it was just a DIY version for amateurs 👍🏴
Hello mate,
I've just taken some old patio slabs off and underneath seems to be concrete.
@@tidybrickslandscaping thanks very much

Hi can anybody help please
I’ve just laid a patio out of Indian sand stone and the joints seem to be pretty big. This never happens,
Surely I Am governed by the size of the 900x600 slab , Because if I tighten the joints up they won’t line up on the edges Then...
Cheers for any help cos it’s bothering me!!!
Hi dackz
It’s a common problem using sandstone as it’s a natural product there can differ in size so I always aim for 10mm joints normally I use porcelain and the sizes are always the same so I use 5mm
You can also cuts some slabs down after you’ve finished and open some joints up with a disc cutter if need be.
You can do it 👍🏴
