You cannot outpace him, you cannot out-jump him, you cannot out-strength him, you cannot outsmart him and you definitely cannot outtalk him. And he married a common nurse in a hospital when he was injured. Brilliant.
As a defender who defends, I've never seen someone better than him..my favourite CB of all time (I count Maldini as a LB).. but I must admit that he's not that complete due to the fact that he's not much of an aerial threat in attacking set pieces..

If you look at the fact Maldini wasn't at that world cup and Nest got an injured after one game. The defence of italy was Cannavaro and Materazzi who was determinant in that competition. Anyhow im not a Lazio (or Milan) fan, but Nesta was years light better than Cannavaro (who was a great defender too), unbelievable the second win ballond'or and first not.

My childhood hero….I was just watching his matches to learn how to be a good brave defender who never lets anyone go through….unfortunately injured my both ankles and broke my left knee by the age of 19 to a point no more professional soccer…..not everyone can fight like Nesta…respect to the legend…. Any yes….recent Italian defenders are also good, but let’s be honest & admit that they don’t have to put up a fight against strikers who can fight like a bull back in 90s and early 2000s.
There is still lots of skill in todays game but it's harder to show because of the speed and fitness that players possess now. Also teams nowadays are much more organised and drilled than they used to be. When I watch older matches it's amazing to see how much more time and space is available and how naive teams where then.

My childhood hero….I was just watching his matches to learn how to be a good brave defender who never lets anyone go through….unfortunately injured my both ankles and broke my left knee by the age of 19 to a point no more professional soccer…..not everyone can fight like Nesta…respect to the legend….

There is still lots of skill in todays game but it's harder to show because of the speed and fitness that players possess now.
Also teams nowadays are much more organised and drilled than they used to be. When I watch older matches it's amazing to see how much more time and space is available and how naive teams where then.
