In case you're wondering about that note on not wearing the brown top on camera: While editing the fine lines on the top did the typical "stripes on camera" thing, where it looked like the top was dancing. Looks like rendering took care of that though, so it's fine now 😅
I'm 53. My mother would have turned 90, but all growing up she would sit in bed each night and roll her shoulder length dark hair up into true pin curls. Wrapping them around two fingers, open the pin with her teeth, then pin it. Then wrap her head in the bandana that held her pins. She didn't need a mirror, she'd do it even in the dark listening to the radio as dad fell asleep. R.I.P Mom. I♡U Happy Mother's Day.
You are sweet, charming, and elegant. I just love your videos, you inspire me to play with my hair and sit a little straighter. It's wonderful to be a women, that plaid dress is just amazing! And you are perfect!! Thank God it doesn't have a poodle on it, you can really wear it out.
I know you commented this 3 years ago, but this comment warmed my heart. I am so sorry for your loss. She sounds like such a wonderful woman I wish I could have known
Those curls turned out amazing! But I gotta say, that blue dress you are wearing is SO gorgeous. It looks super flattering on you. Not only with the hairstyle itself, but your hair and lip colour too! :)
That vintage dress is a dream! And I actually completely love that last shirt you wore!! I’d love to find that somewhere :) so happy the curls were a success! Now maybe I’ll try as well :)
These looked really good ! You can actually go from 1950's curls to «old Hollywood » glam waves, so I think it's a pretty neat result :) + That dress is amazing !
For sports thing or general, you could also.make a high pony, then roll several section towards your scalp..tadah! you have a gorgeous pin curl bun, unroll after some hours and still voluminous big curls (in case you want to strech your set for as long as possible) The big voluminous loose curls look amazing on you Lucy.
Congrats on persevering and finally getting the hairstyle you were after! Stunning. There’s no feeling better than succeeding where you’ve failed before.
This "diary entry" turned out gorgeous - and yeah, very 50s.... together with that adorable dress the whole look is fabulous (all you need is the red lipstick. LOL). Your comment about the weather conditions got me thinking, I wonder if the old fashioned products were "stronger" than todays - where I live it's super humid and hot for like 8 or 9 months a year and my gran never mentioned the curls not lasting - the girls back then wore them even into 2nd and 3rd days.
I would just shake my head upside down and loosen the curls slightly with fingers. I personally wouldn’t brush it out but you managed to keep the body even after vigorous brushing. It looks authentic. I used pin curls, still do, and foam rollers to keep my heated curls fresh. If I sleep with anything it’s TOO curly. In the morning I barely wet it, keep it curled while I get ready, and it works great. Very fast. It works on just washed hair and on 3 day hair.
I remember my Mom doing pincurls but she did it differently- the curls were set flat on her head no barrel and she used a silver clamp type pin. She never had long hair like you but wore her hair in a french twist and did “spitcurls” in the front
Thats so awesome that you got to see those things. I remember my grandma doing something similar and her hair was short but always nice. Of course that was in the lare 80s and early 90s. I miss those things.
my gramma did pin curls on me when I was a child. She did them the same as you described....curled and placed flat against the head, but she used bobby pins to secure them on me. The ones done in this video are pin rolls, her hair I believe, is actually to long for pin curls.
My grandma used to do the same, and did it my hair a few times. My friend's hairdresser mother also set my hair in "pincurls" once and it was the same, pinwheels flat to the head with those flat duck bill metal clips.... that is what I picture when I speak of "pincurls"
Yes! A wand of any kind is so helpful. I use an old empty mascara tube for mine. The only difference is that I start at the end of my hair and roll it all the way up instead of rolling it all near the base of my head. That way the ends always stay put. Also, you can do standing pin curls in the back instead of flat. As you sleep on them, they'll flatten down, but you won't get the crease from the bobby pin. When you take them back out, at least for me, they spring back and don't look like they were ever flattened. Your style looks beautiful though, and so does your dress!! Well done, you! :D
I use an old nivea lip balm tube for mine, wrapping from the ends up to the root, and it works brilliantly. The first time I did it I thought I was a genius!
I tried my first ever attempt at pin curls using the method in this video, and my hair turned out much nicer than expected for a first try. Thanks so much for uploading the Pin Curl Diaries, Lucy!
Yes, it was a complete success. Your hair looks exactly like mine. Even as they relaxed. And I do the same thing, check and see if i can redeem my style for more days. I used to wash and style daily. So glad I’m saving my hair. It’s healthy now that I wash it a little less and on wash day it feels SO good.
When my mom was a young teenager back in the day, she would do pin curls in her hair., she said it was a pain to set but pretty when completed. She would also would use rag strips... roll the hair around the strips and secure.
Loved the dress and hair. Only advice I can share (I wear my hair in a late 50s style everyday) is that you should spray a generous amount under your hair. It prevents it from weighing down and loosening the curls from body heat. I’ve found it has worked well for me and I have medium fine textured hair that loses curl fast. Love your channel!!!
I have got a little tipp for you, if you wanna preserve your nice brushout throughout the whole day, try using a hairnet in the colour of your hair and but it over the Horse Shoe you've created. That will keep your Hairstyle in place I originally got this tipp from Necia's Hairstyling! She is an awesome vintage hairstylist and would probably give you lots of tipps and help!
I do mine with bobby pins, but I use one either side of each curl (otherwise they slip out), and I wind mine around two fingers so that the ends are in the middle of the curl, getting the tightest curl, which looks more natural, I find. I'm not as petantic as you, sectioning like that. While I watch TV, I just feel where to go and how big, and I do it while my hair is wet after a shower (no product needed). Haven't done it in months -- you've inspired me to continue! :D
This is a great result!! 😄👏 Omg that dress!! 😍 I try pincurls and rollers very often but i just keep them 2-4 hours; i would never sleep on them... i'm sure i won't sleep! Also, here in Italy, i can't find a setting lotion where i usually buy hair products😞
Try using anti frizz products on the hair a few days in a row before curling. It may help it to stay longer even in the heat. Also looks cute on u. I never wondered how my teacher did it before
looks great! i always wondered how to do pins curls, when growing up my family would talk about different way to curl but never showed me what it actually was, thanks !the mystery is solved -including your rags curl video
It's a bit discouraging to see how much the style fell just after a few hours, but maybe that has something to do with the length/weight of your hair? I don't know. 😅
I have tight curls too. To fight the frizz use a shower comb and a tad bit of hair oil or curl definer. Comb product thru wet and let dry and it won't frizz. My straight haired mother used a bristle comb, so did I. The bristle causes the frizz, especially a detangle brush.
I'm not a big fan of heat styling my hair, at most I'll use a hair dryer at low heat, low speed, and am sticking my arm out at full length. I've wanted to give pin curls a try (I'm a little tired of foam rollers. I wanted to shake things up a bit). Anyways, all other pin curl videos I've seen so far used a curling iron that was on, which I disliked because I don't like heat styling. It NEVER occurred to me to use it while off! That's brilliant! I'll be trying that. Thank you for this!
accidentally saw this video , and i love ur hair so much😍. Also your dress is absolutely gorgeous. I like ur channel very much, and i can’t wait to see more ✨
I use in my pin curl Fixing pomade. I do my curls just like you do with a locion. After brush just a little bit I use fixing pomade, just a little amount, pass in my hair and then a make the style. In last use a hair spray .
Loved the hair look, I have naturally curly hair but when I sleep on it they fluff up terribly. So definitely will be testing this style out soon! Also that top is cute why did you say not to wear it on camera?
What kind of brush do you use to break up the curl? Does it work well for long hair because i am worried it will tangle my hair into a mess if i try that
I have such a love/hate relationship when I attempt pin curls -- the curling process always works well, but the styling/brush out end of things still needs to be conquered! Hahaha :P I'm actually planning to film a pin curl styling experiment soon myself!
- Standing up curls turn out better than flat curls. but if you're going to sleep them in, then do them flat because standing up curls get messy when you move around in your sleep. - what i usually do is pin all of the curls dry and when they're all in place spray them with water and hair spray. pinning the curls with wet hair is super hard for me since hair gets stringy. -ROLL. I think vintage pin curl hairstyles are easiest with hair that is cut a couple of inches below your shoulders. All your hairstyles always look beautiful though!
OK listen I mean this in the nicest way possible she looks like the cutest little rat/mouse in the world and I just want to hug her and pinch her cheeks I absolutely love her and I’m now subscribed
Loepsie! You're Dutch, you're vegan, you have dark hair and eyes and a roundish face, You do wood carving?! You are awesome. Love from a vegan Dutch amateur wood carver in the uk 💚
The reason you lose your curl, is that you're not using pomade. If you live in a humid place, you need to incorporate a small amount of pomade into your curls while brushing. Dry shampoo also will help if its humid, powder not the curls but your roots a little so they don't fall flat.
I’ve curled my hair a million times and I usually use pincurls or rollers but they never last for more than half a day. I do use lots of setting lotion, hairspray, and damped my hair and leave it overnight . What should I do to make them last longer?
For some reason my hair got super frizzy and dry after a few hours. The curls opened up and all that was left was poofy frizz. I don’t understand how curling can change the texture of my hair?
If you're doing pin curls then bobby pins are not the best tool. They sell those metal flat duckbill clips that are meant for pin curls, they won't leave a crimp in the hair like a bobby pin. I've seen them called double prong clips or metal curl clips... may be worth looking into, they aren't terribly expensive and can be purchased online or at a beauty supply store.

the second day curls, with the brown shirt and glasses, totally gave me a mid-1960's vibe, and i'm living for it!
My mum did her hair like this everynight before bed, from the time she started work as a 16 yo until she passed away.
Naww that's beautiful ♡
Good memory. The little memories are important.
My Mom curled mine with bobbypins when I was younger.
Wow, that’s so sweet! Also - respect - these take so long

lovemyrainydays they wore hair nets while they slept.
They also probably wore half a can of hairspray in their hair at once. My grandma always did. Ok I exaggerate ever so slightly.
It was called Dippity Do and your curl were crunchy hard after you took out the pins or curlers.
I would just shake my head upside down and loosen the curls slightly with fingers. I personally wouldn’t brush it out but you managed to keep the body even after vigorous brushing. Instead of hairspray, try spray gel, I use V05 on my very straight, fine hair. Use it generously and you will be surprised! 😊
My eyes dilated at 8:36!
That wonderful strand of curly '50s hair!
I want to try it too!

Seems like you could use the rag curling method to achieve the curls? They look quite spirally before brushing them out
Turned out gorgeous!
You can brush them with your hands the next day so you don’t frizz them or make them looser
