I was born in 1948, and while I was growing up, I never heard of anybody's set lasting more than one day. Everyone I knew, including myself, rolled their hair with a spritz of water EVERY NIGHT. I, personally, let my hair rest on Friday nights, i.e., I did not roll my hair on Friday nights.
Remember Dippity Do? Did you use that? Or Dep? It came in a little tub--pink, yellow and I think green. Oh those were the days. Dippity Do and a can of good old Aqua Net. Life was simpler.
Hope it's not so oddly late, but if you could reply to this I'd be ever so grateful: do you know what type of brush was most used at the time to brush out the curls?
I'm probably so late, by the date I see, that you've long since perfected your style and resolved all these issues, but on the off-chance you haven't and for anyone watching... Nana says that after the brushout, you should use both a pomade for sealing and setting the waves in place (Kusco Murphy make a nice lavender one specially for curls - whether natural or created - according to a rockabilly GF of mine), and a super-strong -hold hairspray to shellac it into not moving. But she says the most important thing you're doing wrong is being so active, while wearing such a high-maintenance style. You're going to clubbing and shopping in crowded environments, you're riding your bike places in high wind, and you're doing it all in a hot climate, which is basically all but *sabotaging* your efforts from the start. She says that it wasn't really normal for fashionable women before the '60s, or even for late teenage girls once the concept of "teens" came in in the '50s, to really do anything very physical once they were fully primped, especially on the first day of a set - sort of like how pre-Meiji era Japanese courtiers wore robes so heavy they were only really able to sit in court, and couldn't move around much in them; but just like those Imperial nobles, the women of the '50s didn't see that as oppressive, it was just normal to them. You waited until the end of your hair cycle before doing any really heavy chores, so that when the sweat and movement loosened your hair even further than it already has been by the time passed since it was set, you didn't really mind because you were about to have it re-done anyway. But apparently, a lot of the fashions, and heavy makeup and fussy hair of the period really only were practical because ladies just didn't have to *do* very much (which is why you notice, if you ever dig up pictures from that time of women who did have to work, their looks tend to be much lower-maintenance). Women who could afford to live aspirationally (and these are the ones whose images became iconic of the era from advertising and TV shows and so forth, and so are largely what we think of now when we picture a '50s woman and her life) were expected to be largely decorative; your physical labour would be limited to keeping the house (which would be the big jobs like mopping, and deep-clean vacuuming, and scrubbing, on one day a week which was right before your hairstyle being refreshed, and the rest of the week it would be the smaller, maintenance jobs like dusting, laundry, and just clearing up incidental messes as required), and cooking, and caring for children at a time when the culture was that kids demanded less physicality from their mother in their play. But supposedly that's where the concept of a "tomboy" comes from; physical activity levels were so heavily gendered at the time, that if a little girl preferred rough-and-tumbling with her brother and otherwise being active on a level that was expressly understood as masculine at the time, to playing with dolls and helping her mother, it was notable enough that they actually have to have a word of reference, to distinguish it. Anyway, sorry about the long, long comment! She says you should consider holding off the really dainty hair-sets for days when you're going to be under less physical demand, or else specifically plan your daily looks around your hairstyle changing; plan to wear quite a tight, high bob on day 1, and an outfit around that, and then plan your ensemble around a softer style on day 2, and then a really dreamy, romantic tumbling wave on day 3, and reset your hair on night 3 for day 4. And add some pomade and wear a crap-tonne (my words, not hers) of vintage-brand hairspray to slow the collapse, either way (you don't actually have to go looking hard and spend a fortune; it turns out that Aqua Net and Elnett, both of which can be found in most chemists if not supermarkets, have both been around since about that time, and are reflective of the sort of helmet-hair hold that a decent set relied upon). To quote Nana directly; "It's about how it looks, not how it feels. If it feels pleasant to touch, and moves easily, then it's not actually been "finished" properly as we did at the time." She says that our modern obsession with being able to put our hands into our hair any time we like, or have romantic interests be able to do so (and want to), is again, one of those things that came about from the '60s on. Watch any golden-oldie type silver screen movie and you'll see that when the leads passionately kiss, the men will touch the women's faces or grab their backs or the backs of their necks or even carefully cup the crown of her head in his hand, but you'll almost never see one put his fingers *into* her hair. I guess it really was just a very different time; even those little things that we take for granted, like touching our hair and face throughout the day, or the hair of our beloved (men's hair tended to be at least greasy from pomade fixing it in place, as well, if it wasn't *also* a bit stiff), just as a matter of course. Our whole culture is just so different, now. Wishing you well! :-D
Whoa! I was born in '51 and my mom worked hard at home everyday! Of course, we were country and not wealthy as your family must have bn to think women had not much to do! We did not have running water when I was little so she carried water in from a springhouse, heated it on a warm morning stove which I'm sure she had to keep burning during the day when my dad was working. She used a wringer washer and hung clothes out to dry. Cooked meals on a wood stove. Of course, I guess we were lucky as far as hair goes cuz we all had natural curl. She used setting gel on my hair and rolled it around her finger in long curls to tame the frizz. As well as I remember she pin curled her own. We all took baths on Saturdays and she got 3 kids up and ready for church every Sunday after breakfast that she cooked (not cold cereal).
As it falls, it’s a beautiful boho-esque wave! I’m so happy it worked for though-I’d also be interested to see how ladies maintained this style from day to day too. We definitely have heat in humidity here in the states, so they must have come up with something, right? ☺️
Three things on making the curl set last (from personal experience and researching vintage tutorials) 1. You don't seem to be using any product when you are doing the brush out (or maybe I missed it?) But especially in the 40s pomade would be used, this helps the curls hold, gives more shine, and prevents frizz. I also tend to use a bit of hairspray especially at the front 2. Many women would have had permed hair, mostly at the ends and looser than the perms off the 70s, so the curls would be much more durable 3. The weight of long hair doesn't help but no matter what after a few days the curls are looser. generally you can change the style to suit (partially covered with a scarf, pinned up more, ect.) These are just things I have found help, hope that you might find something in there too!
I agree brushing after using pomade may help. Like maybe Murray's pomade in the orange tin can. But also brushing in general will make the curls fall. When I do a set I sort of use my hands to help stretch the hair to where I want then let it fall as the days go by. I also sleep with a satin bonnet to prevent friction from frizzing, tangling, and unnecessary stretching. I heard pulling the curls apart then twirling them with a finger and pomade helps instead of brushing. I have yet had success with that personally but it could be for thicker hair or something.
See, for me it is the opposite! I can get my curls to last for a week, but if I put any pomade or product on the curls themselves they last one day, maybe two. So much of finding a routine that works for you is about trial and error. Trying different tips, trying different products, different methods (like more curlers/less curlers) it's really a process!
When I set my hair I put some gel and/or mousse in my hair right out of the shower and let it air dry to about 80% dry before setting my rollers with setting lotion and water. Personally, I really love the Lotta Body setting lotion. Also, once I have everything brushed out I spray on some hairspray.
Maybe you can make the curls last longer by using hairspray, or by wearing a head scarf when you are outside to protect your hairstyle from the wind. I am not sure if this would be enough to overcome the heat and humidity, however.
Yeah there's only so much you can do in the face of lots of humidity, but a silky scarf definitely helps both with the wind and protecting the curls while you sleep.
Kirsten Paff yeah I live in Hawaii the humidity and heat always wins and my hair is completely straight by the end of the day😑 one thing that I've found that works is using mousse then putting my rollers in and blow drying it. It's a double whammy system but unfortunately I don't have time for that every time I go out so I usually lazily put a few cloth rollers in before I sleep during the summer 😆
The end result was quite a nice tousled wave look 😍. Just keep experimenting and practising, you'll get better results that fit your hair in the future
The finished haurstyle looked sooo pretty!!! I just love this kind of hair.. For preserving i guess they tied scarves around the hair to protect against wind or they used snoods and thin hair nets especially in the 40s to keep everything in place generally. I tried preserving my roller curls until the next day by repining them as pincurls. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt lol but its wayy easier to pincurl if the hair already has the impression of a curl from the day before. Lovee♡♡♡
I love that you’re getting into the retro look. I swear by Ashley’s tutorials over at LisaFreemontStreet. She is the queen of retro hair and has great tips for high humidity styling!
The tangle teezer worked so well - I'll have to try one out! I've been using an old-fashioned nylon bristled Denman brush to brush out for a long time, which works well but certainly takes longer than yours did. With the crazy heat and humidity we are dealing with in Europe at the moment, your curls held up better than some of my sets have under the same conditions. I find that hair gel mixed with water holds the longest in humid conditions, though it's hard to get the concentration right so it seals the curl and holds without being crunchy or flaky when brushed out. Trial and error, with usually lots of error...
Watching your vintage curling videos as I do it myself for the first time. It feels like I'm doing it with a friend and I feel less disappointed when I fail 😁
I'm from Florida and I know all about humidity! I actually roll tighter and go for a more 30s fluffy curly look for the first day so by the second day it's more like the 50s wave pattern. I also use a LOT of hairspray and wait for it to dry before going out. I also have fine hair and it can't hold a curl any other way. I will admit, I'm not usually doing a lot of active things outdoor if I rolled my hair, but I suppose pinning it up (try rolling in the direction of your curls and pin close to your head) and wearing a scarf or a hat could help. Plus if you need it to go another day, you can always reroll your curl at night dry and voilà fresh curls! When I do this I usually only reroll the front section and let the back just have some texture from the day before, even if they aren't well defined curls or even super great waves. If it looks totally straight I just pin my new curls back on top of the straight hair and incorporate it with my fingers to give the illusion of waves/curls. And again....hairspray.
🎉 CONGRATULATIONS!🎉 You did it! 😳 Yes, humidity will take everything down ~ no matter what you do. Only thing that will keep the curl is a VERY LIGHT perm. It will hold and style better. The key is make sure it's a LIGHT perm. I'm so proud of you! You hung in there. 🏆
My hair is the same way! Can't hold onto a curl to save my life 😩. I have found Kenra volume 25 is a great hairspray for me for everyday hold. When I need a serious hold, I use Redken Wax Blast. It smells kind of unpleasant to me, but it really hold the style. Your looked great! Thank you for the tips.
For durability, I use a lot of hairspray once I have the curls brushed out. I also take comb and slightly backcomb the curl, just once, to keep it from falling. I either re-pin or just leave my hair, but either way I cover it with a silky bonnet overnight. It keeps wavy the next day (I again 'set' the curl in with the backcombing) , but doesn't last more than that, no matter what I do.
You did it! It looks great! Heat and humidity will definitely just ruin your curl but I've never had mine last more than a day or two even in good weather. The more damaged your hair the more it tends to hold so with your nice healthy hair you'll probably have to reroll it every night like I do. Adding more setting lotion to your water mixture will help with hold as well using a little pomade. I hate the feeling of product in my hair though so I use as little as possible and just re set as needed.
I really like your results in pt. 2 but loved pt. 1 also. One comment was about the fact that many women would get a perm, then roller set to define the curls. I think that made a huge difference in how long your curls would last. Many other great comments that would be helpful. I'm sure you've got it all figured out by now! 😉❤️
Iv been using foam rollers for 7-8 years now and for your type of hair I wouldn't go with bigger rollers. Id stick to one inch rollers (which it looks like its what you have) with one in sections (which it looks like that's roughly what you did). id try using a paddle brush and a denim brush ( a brush with rubber gums), it makes the brush out so much faster. Try also using a bit of water base pomade, it will help with flyway's and shaping without weighing the hair to much and some hairspray. Id also recommend going tighter with your hold without squeezing the foam roller it self, look up the RUclipsr a vintagevanity, she goes over some really good tips on using foam rollers. After using every curling method out there foam rollers ( I personally think) work the best and are the easiest and most comnfortable to sleep in, just make sure to use a head scarf or a hair net to help protect your roller set while sleeping. Hope this helps.
Yay!!! Finally!!! So glad you got a better result this time, and now that it only takes a few minutes to brush out, it's something I can definitely try. Sidenote: I have a tangle teezer and I HATE the way it sounds when I brush my hair. I love everything else about it but I feel like it makes a ripping sound that is just painful to hear.
Hair spray or dipping doo during roll up. Heat set with bonnet drier and then lots of splay when you style it. that is what they did. You may get several days out of it with some well placed pin curls and TP
Suggestion from old girl. Back in the day, beauty magazines had articles which included rolling guides showing how to achieve a specific look. If you can hunt one down it might be helpful to you.
Making the curls last in hot humid climates is a task in itself, even the most versed stylists struhhle with this. My tip is to find what works for you. I have fine hair also (actually very similar to yours) and I find setting lotion pales in comparison to mousse, and a tonne of hairspray. You just need to find what works for you.
I also was at scouting in the Netherlands for perhaps a year and was on summercamp, too :) I was leader for the woeps and enjoyed that averyone was fine to be a certain character, I was a conductor. Here in Germany, also at scouting not everyone is keen to get into a character :D I do have a question though, not really related to the video, but you mentioned riding a bike and since I have experienced in the Netherlands myself and also in Germany I am riding my bike a lot I wonder if you could give some tips on how to ride bikes with (long) skirts and dresses. Maybe in a video? This is a thing I really struggle with.
Your look at the end of the video is very different from the beginning; I like them both but really prefer the more relaxed look at the end. It was fun to watch you do a 50's style, though, as usual when you try something different. 👍🏼
Try a spray gel to finish it and hold the style. V05 spray gel works wonders on my fine hair and holds on pin curls all day without the frizzyness of hairspray x x
Lovely!! Blessings!!!!! 💜💜 PS Hairspray might help it last longer. I grew up wearing foam rollers to bed on a fairly regular basis (born in 1953) and I remember my Mom using end papers to keep the ends of my hair flat. She used a mixture of water and setting lotion for an overnight wet set. Also, she would lightly spritz my hair with hairspray after she brushed it out. These videos certainly take me back. Do you plan to try brush rollers, too? Those things are like a torture device to sleep in!!
I have extra fine hair. Curls dont really last in the heat. But Kevyn Murphy anti.gravity setting lotion helps. As well as a good hairspay like final net, spay the hell out of it!
This looks great! I started doing roller curls every Monday morning after watching your videos, and went through almost the same journey where they didn't combine uniformly so I did a set with like a million rollers wrapped tightly, which also never brushed out haha. This will be what I try next! Though my hair is fine too, it's 2c/3a curly already and very dry, so it likes to keep a curl. I did find that usin hairspray actually made it "fall" quicker, because it seemed like the hairspray hold replaced the curl hold, so when the hairspray wore off there was nothing holding it up. I would love to see if you find a solution for humidity/sweat. Love your videos!
There is a super strong hairspray that I use for stage performances but it is called aqua net hairspray you might be able to get it to stay a lot better that way
Originally started watching for the hairstyle but then you mentioned a scouting camp and now I'm curious what group you're from haha. I'm a guide myself at the Drostengroep from Coevorden. Missed out on summer camp this year. Probably for the better with the insane heat we had this year.
Yes, last time you were getting frustrated because you wanted a perfectly uniformed wave pattern. I noticed this, as well. Just go easy on yourself. Also, all these hair videos are keeping your arm muscles defined!
Oh my gosh! I just started watching and let me just say... you are so beautiful!! Your hair style (as mentioned in another comment) looks a lot like Rachel Weisz in the Mummy movie. I am now a fan 🙋🏼
I did a similar hairstyle recently and used mousse instead of setting lotion and a bit of hair spray. I have fine hair too but it lasted for two and a half days and probably even longer if I hadn't washed my hair. Maybe that would work on your hair too?
Vintage hairdos have always been so mystifying to me. It's really interesting to see how this kind of look was achieved. It never made any sense to me before.
Yes, now you rolled them like I would have..Unfortunally I didnt feel they did much and my hair is usually easy to curl but these..Oh I got so many (a showbox full!) but no.. Ps What exercise do you do? Your arms look really slim and female. Love it!
I love this series! I've been using all these tips too to try and achieve a good brush-out. I'm growing out bangs currently, so I had one question for you - how do you get your bangs to stay in the rollers like that? I can't get mine to cooperate and I have to end up using a curling iron the next day.
You are gorgeous. 🙂 the style was super cute. Funny that your curls dropped because of the humidity. Lol my hair would become a lions mane I. Any humidity with that brush out style! Lol
I am an a older woman too. When I as a child my mum used to tie my hair in rags and your hair just looks like shirley temples the minute you take them out. It's pain itself I seem to remember both tying them in and taking them out! lol You might not want to try that lol.
I bet they wrapped it around their finger curled forward and pinned flat like a saucer to the head in larger curls and brushed just a few times. I think I saw that somewhere, instead of pinned inside the curl.
Hey Lucy! I actually have a very frizzy hair and I struggle with that a lot. So if u would make a video on that...like if u have some tips and hacks for frizzy hair then that would be really helpful...can ya help me?
My hair curls quite well but getting the curls to HOLD is another story altogether...unless I use hairspray (I make my own out of water, sugar, and essential oils). Then the style carries over to the next day, if not longer!
t was wel echt veels te warm voor mooie krullen hahah. Mijn haar floept echt poef zomaar terug met deze hitte. Maar heel mooi, ik ga het morgen ook proberen!
Did you say Scouting camp? Are you a Girl Scout/Girl Guide? My teenage daughter is a Girl Scout and I am a leader for her troop 💗 and we love your videos 😊. Your pin curls are so beautiful! My daughter has them mastered already.
Yep curlers every night to keep the hairdo until the next shampoo.

@@huffin_and_puffin I really want to know, too!!!
@melissasw64 I used Dippity Do and Aqua Net in the 80's to create the sky-high-hair-to-God look that was popular back then.
I'm probably so late, by the date I see, that you've long since perfected your style and resolved all these issues, but on the off-chance you haven't and for anyone watching...

Mer Boy yes, I liked the amount of curl at the end - mine is much curvier and I have to do quite a bit to get that more relaxed bedhead look.

Trial and error, with usually lots of error...
Watching your vintage curling videos as I do it myself for the first time. It feels like I'm doing it with a friend and I feel less disappointed when I fail 😁
I always love your makeup! You look lovely with or without but the red lip and vintage hair looks fabulous on you!
YEEEEESSSS! I'm so happy you managed! Now just a good setting spray and you'll be ready to go for several days ^^
Hair spray or dipping doo during roll up. Heat set with bonnet drier and then lots of splay when you style it. that is what they did. You may get several days out of it with some well placed pin curls and TP
Ahhhh, you pinned the "tail" up and under, at the nape of your neck. I never thought of doing that. Here goes! Thank you!
Yeaaaah succes! 😊 👏 It look so good on you combined with that lipcolor!
Suggestion from old girl. Back in the day, beauty magazines had articles which included rolling guides showing how to achieve a specific look. If you can hunt one down it might be helpful to you.
Anybody else doing a Loepsie marathon? While they should be sleeping? But they have no self control?
Making the curls last in hot humid climates is a task in itself, even the most versed stylists struhhle with this. My tip is to find what works for you. I have fine hair also (actually very similar to yours) and I find setting lotion pales in comparison to mousse, and a tonne of hairspray. You just need to find what works for you.
Congratulations! Your hair looks fabulous!
12:24 WOW!!! Okay, I have to be more pedantic like you, haha! That looks phenomenally wonderful!
Gorgeous!!! So happy for you after all the past struggle!! That's perfect!!!! 😍😍😍
Hooray, looks beautiful! Yes, I find when using foam rollers if you make the curls too tight and small you end up with too much curl like Annie hair.
YAY!! I’m gonna try this now!! I have 2c curls and this would help my hair so much to keep it like this all week!! ❤️❤️
I think hairspray is key in the summer.
WOOOOW! that looks so glam! Would love to try that 😍😍😍
can u do how to tame sweaty bangs
Avni Bhagat I used to tame my bangs by applying dry shampoo at the root it would keep them from looking to greasy or sweaty
I just wash the bangs
Yay for more success! Also that white top at the beginning of the video was dreamy pretty 😍
Wow!!! Gorgeous!! Your hair looks amazing !
Try a spray gel to finish it and hold the style. V05 spray gel works wonders on my fine hair and holds on pin curls all day without the frizzyness of hairspray x x
Lovely!! Blessings!!!!! 💜💜
PS Hairspray might help it last longer.
This might sound crazy but my grandmother used aloe vera straight from the plant while rolling. However, hair spray is necessary to make them last.
Excellent... this looks so pretty. I really love it
I'm so happy for you!! My hair is too long to do this now and I miss it.
I love that cream color top. Also you forgetting hair spray I think.
I have extra fine hair. Curls dont really last in the heat. But Kevyn Murphy anti.gravity setting lotion helps. As well as a good hairspay like final net, spay the hell out of it!
Thank you for your work! I learn so much from your videos!
Use a diffuser attachment on a hairdryer and blast the curls with cold air after you have taken them down to set the curl
There is a super strong hairspray that I use for stage performances but it is called aqua net hairspray you might be able to get it to stay a lot better that way
yayyy congratlations! It look very pretty. Can you try to make a look with curls and your bangs?
Originally started watching for the hairstyle but then you mentioned a scouting camp and now I'm curious what group you're from haha. I'm a guide myself at the Drostengroep from Coevorden. Missed out on summer camp this year. Probably for the better with the insane heat we had this year.
I feel like those rollers make really good victorian curls
Yeeey! I'm sooo happy it finally worked 😍
It looked really nice, even if it didn't last! xx
Yes, last time you were getting frustrated because you wanted a perfectly uniformed wave pattern. I noticed this, as well. Just go easy on yourself. Also, all these hair videos are keeping your arm muscles defined!
Looking very pretty and put together.
I love watching you
Yay!!!! Good job lucy!
Yes, now you rolled them like I would have..Unfortunally I didnt feel they did much and my hair is usually easy to curl but these..Oh I got so many (a showbox full!) but no.. Ps What exercise do you do? Your arms look really slim and female. Love it!
This looks great on you!
I love this series! I've been using all these tips too to try and achieve a good brush-out. I'm growing out bangs currently, so I had one question for you - how do you get your bangs to stay in the rollers like that? I can't get mine to cooperate and I have to end up using a curling iron the next day.
Vintage styles usually used a layered cut. You will find less weight and multi lengths of hair will hold the curl longer. 😊
I know it isn’t the style you were going for but your hair at the end also looks gorgeous
Your hair looks beautiful more likely the amount of heat last year I think they stayed in pretty good for the heat etc
Setting lotion would have been used in the past.
Try using a foaming wrap lotion. Don’t add water to it though, it’ll dilute the formula.
Do they still make Dippity Do?
Yey ! Another video from my fav person. 😍
You can use paper towels, split the ply, as end papers. Source: I just did it the other day.
Hey Lucy! I actually have a very frizzy hair and I struggle with that a lot. So if u would make a video on that...like if u have some tips and hacks for frizzy hair then that would be really helpful...can ya help me?
I have curly hair, I cannot relate to any of this, but I cannot help to be mesmerized by all the brushing being made @_@
I'm really happy for you... And THANKS actually I was also searching something like this.....
Looking gorgeous...😊
Can you please put your latest hair cair routine video.
My hair curls quite well but getting the curls to HOLD is another story altogether...unless I use hairspray (I make my own out of water, sugar, and essential oils). Then the style carries over to the next day, if not longer!
You might not know, but back then, women who wanted curly hair to last, had perms. The permanents gave the hair a longer curl retention.
Oh!! you look sooo beautiful!!!
I’m so happy for you!
Would you have been helped with a silk hair scarf when going outside?
Can you tell what kind of brush you were using? I'd be so gratefull :)
I could never master that! My hair always looked so dry after a roller set.
t was wel echt veels te warm voor mooie krullen hahah. Mijn haar floept echt poef zomaar terug met deze hitte. Maar heel mooi, ik ga het morgen ook proberen!
Wow awesome you definitely have a old soul not being mean I love your personality and it suits you
Did you say Scouting camp? Are you a Girl Scout/Girl Guide? My teenage daughter is a Girl Scout and I am a leader for her troop 💗 and we love your videos 😊. Your pin curls are so beautiful! My daughter has them mastered already.
I'm a leader, yes 😊 But we have mixed gender groups over here so it's boys and girls 😁
Where is your hairbrush from (the boar bristle one)?❤️
Are you going to film the Lizzie McGuire beauty beacons of fiction video? Or have you already? Xx
Hey i love your Channel 🌹 Can you tell me what Model of glasses you are wearing in this Video? They are beautify. Thank you :-)
My hair is very similar to yours..texture, color, soft appearance, etc. and it never holds a curl :'(
What are the curlers?
Hi! Where are your glasses on day 2 from? I love them!
Thanks! They're from glassesusa.com 😊
LisaFreemontStreet has some amazing tutorials on how to make vintage sets last in high humidity! Check out some of her tutorials. :)
i also love how it looked at 11:16 :)
