I was a little girl in the 60s and suffered through many, many, many wet sets. Lol, so I cannot imagine anyone doing this on purpose. But I love your dedication to vintage beauty even when it brings back cringe memories.
You have to adjust your pin curls as per YOUR thickness and head size. These guides are ONLY guides. AND know what look you want to achieve BEFORE you set your curl pattern. Generally speaking, make sure ALL your pincurls have the same amount of thickness in them - the more hair in each curl the softer the curl. Bravo for experimenting.
A huge part of the 50's hairstyle is the haircut, I had a haircut like yours and once I got a long middy everything came together, Lisa Freemont Street has lots of videos about pincurling and she says she doesn't follow a setting pattern because for the most part you can mould the curls when you're brushing them so it takes a lot of experimentation, I've been curling my hair with soft rollers since I was 7 and I highly recommend always curling with freshly washed hair if you have thin/fine hair, I can't speak for girls with thicker hair but that's just my experience😊
The Lauren Bacall pin curl setting pattern always worked for me! I also use a medium size boar bristle round brush to sculpt the curls. It really helps make them smooth and shapes them perfectly. I use the brushing technique I learned from pinupdollashleymarie
@@viloy101 you want no layers, and then a rounded "edge" shoulder length or short is more accurate to the 50s and early 60s while long hair is more 30s and 40s. Most 50s sets work best on a bob :P
Brittany Gray is a youtuber who is a hairdresser, and she talks about how clean hair takes a curl best when freshly washed, and updos are better with second or third day hair. Also wear a headscarf whilst you sleep so your pin curls don't move about or fall out completely.
I really enjoy your episodes. I tried pin curl sets at night recently on a 2 week trip through Austria and Switzerland. I got so many compliments on my hair that is almost as long as yours. So easy when travelling and your hair tools could Blow Up from differing electrical systems. Your channel is so much fun! Thank you!
I love that you’re doing this. I’ve been pincurling for years and honestly, it all comes down to the hair cut. I’ve had an actual middy cut and it didn’t matter how I rolled my hair, the set always turned out perfectly! Lol but how my hair is one length and regardless of the pattern I curl in, the hair absolutely will not lay right. A Veronica Lake setting pattern is perfect for hair with little to no layers, though so definitely give that a try. ❤️
I can remember watching my mother put pin curls in her hair in the early 60’s. She used a rat tail comb to divide into narrow sections then separated out small sections, about 1” x 1”. She rolled them around the finger all the way to the scalp, put the curl flat on her head and used two pins crossed to hold the curl.
There is no way I could do this with my hair. It is so thick and my hair would've still been wet by the morning. My ponytails would never dry if I put them in wet. People have always said I was lucky, but sometimes I hated it. I remember when I was 16 back in 1990 I got a sprial perm. It took two girls and 2 hours to roll my hair. Then they had to put a garbage bag instead of a haircap over my head. The whole thing took 6 hours. Ugh. I'm in my 40's now, and my hair is a little bit thinner and I am glad now bc I won't be one of those older ladies who has extremely thin or even balding hair. Yours is the perfect thickness, imo. It's beautiful.
Brush, brush and brush. Especially around the face. The back will fall into place if you use long billed clips to define the waves. Also, please use a silk scarf with a couple of Bobby pins to hold in place when you sleep ~ NOT a hair net ~ silly girl 👧😉 But overall, really good video! 💞
I curl my super straight hair at night with foam rollers that twist closed to keep them in place. I got them on Amazon and they are called "Bememo 40 Pieces Hair Rollers DIY Hair Styling Rollers Tools Soft Sleep Foam Pillow Hair Curler Rollers." My rollers are dotted pink. You roll your hair on the foam center and then twist them closed to stay in place with the flexible metal ends. They are comfortable and work beautifully. They are about $20 and worth every dime. You get 40 pieces but my fine hair only really needs 7 or so. The curl lasts all day. I don't put anything on my hair before I roll it, but once it's brushed out, I add hair spray and a bit of back combing on top. I'm not sure I'd have the patience for pin curling. I really enjoy your videos!.
If you brush those front curls on the sides of your face towards the back of your head you will get better results then if you use the brush to mold the curls the way you want them they should stay due to the hair spray. BUt great job and yay dnd! may you roll many crit 20's and have a great day!
Girl, for this one you just needed to brush more and mold it. One of the best tips I've gotten was to brush and mold until it looks the way you want. Also use a silk scarf at night instead of a hair net so it stops getting caught at night and reduces friction.
SWEET! D&D! What is your race/class? I have a level 13 Arcane Trickster /Bard multiclass (HalfElf) named Fellinara and a Storm Herald Barbarian (human) named Tira Stormfury. Tira is level 11
I definitely prefer the 2nd day hair. It was softer and overall more aesthetically appealing to me. I do wonder how it would have looked if you did the reverse of the directions, meaning more and smaller curls in back, fewer inches front.
If you really want to get a good vintage set then you will need to have the right haircut... the middy hairstyle is part of what create the right shape for these vintage sets... you can keep your hair on the longer side still, but the specific dimensions of the middy help so much with the shape and getting the set in properly. I personally find sets work much better on freshly washed hair with a proper setting lotion applied, that is how both my grandmothers always did it and how I do it now when wet setting... and please, please, please get the right pins for pincurls, your hair will set so much better and will be much tidier. I really liked your second day hair, it looked pretty although not particularly like a brushout set.
Pro tip: if you want your set to last multiple days, you need to put it up in pin curls again and spray it with a little water to re-activate the setting lotion and refresh the curls. That´s the way I make my sets last, and it works wonderfully for me.
natsblogs hmm perhaps 🤔 i don’t really know anything about vintage hair but I always assumed they just used a technique with hair straighteners and pinned the waves in place to cool
I did this with a hair curl chart I found on Pinterest. I was shocked because my hair came out at the right shape and it literally took two minutes to do my hair. Gramma was right Lolol
Hey Lucy, Love your video! I especially like the second day result. Thank you for being our reliable guinea pig for all these years! Trouwens: ben je helemaal gestopt met Loepsie NL? Ik zag net dat je laatste post alweer van een jaar geleden is...

Thanks for saying that ~ I forgot to mention that in my comment 😂
I love how it turned out on the second day-- it's like something happens and the curl set improves overnight! I love this series 🌹
I'm glad you're continuing the pin curl diaries!! It's my favorite series you do.

me too! :D I love lauren bacall she is my fave :)
I have to say that pin curls suit you very well, Lucy!
It’s also the haircut I believe that’s what my boss/stylist told me once when I was obsessed with doing Marilyn Monroe styles
Yes it's called the middy haircut I recently learned!
What haircut is recommended for doing this?

Your oven beeped like 1min after I put my pizza in my oven. I was like “Wait.. what?!”

The middy haircut really helps in achieving an authentic 50s look.
i really liked the back A LOT, especially before you pined it up, and the second day
I can't wait to see what you try next! Love this series!
I don’t know how you’re able to brush your hair with your glasses still on, I always feel that need to take mine off 😂
I love this at the end.
Amazing vid I am turning my life into the 50s and this was very helpful thank you
I love the Pin curl diaries 😂

I want to try it on my hair💕
love your videos so much!!
Are you able to share what brand and style your spectacles are, I love them
WOAH.. QUITE GOOD😍
I wonder if any movie hair dressers would have tips. Like on youtube or something?
Jennifer Grove they would use heat to achieve the effect rather than the overnight method
but wouldn't the idea be the same? about where to place curls and which direction they go in, etc?
natsblogs hmm perhaps 🤔 i don’t really know anything about vintage hair but I always assumed they just used a technique with hair straighteners and pinned the waves in place to cool

Hey Lucy,
Love your video! I especially like the second day result. Thank you for being our reliable guinea pig for all these years!
Trouwens: ben je helemaal gestopt met Loepsie NL? Ik zag net dat je laatste post alweer van een jaar geleden is...
Would you try Amy Winehouse for Beauty Beacons? Please 😁
Very Jessica Rabbit.I Love it :) X

I wanna try this pin curl THING, but, i have, tinny problem......IM LAZY😉😃😃
You know girls in the 40s had the same problems you do. Second day curls, humidity, etc. I haven't seen a bad hair day on you yet!
Soo gud
Great .. you are very pretty...
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
1st to comment @loepsie
Mom!😄😆
I liked that tight front
Honestly not sure why you continued this series after last time, I thought you got it perfectly.
Shoot? You're a vintage model?
awesome curl suits you but it's become disaster at last
It doesn't seem worth all the hassle 😁
