My grandma had written in a scrapbook that she had a neighbor who gave her rag curls as a young girl, and I always wanted to see how they were done. She has pretty bad dementia, so asking her isn't quite an option. So thank you very much for this video! :) great to have some insight into her life in the late 30s/early 40s
So glad you tried this method! For a really long time, I kept my hair curled this way (but to the scalp) after washing it. Usually a lot for tight curls, but as few as three will give nice waves. People thought I had naturally curly hair. :) It's easy, free, and works so well!
I was really shocked back in my school days when a classmate admitted her hair wasn't naturally curly. Maybe we just get used to it a certain way and assume people aren't putting the time in to curl it. :)
Heatless curls are one of my favourite videos to watch. If you roll them differently next time give us another video please!! I feel like this should be part of the *Pin Curl diaries* as the result is pretty similar
I used to do two little buns like that every night when I was a teenager and younger ! It gave me the soft big curls that I could time in cute ponytails! I felt like a doll and I loved it ! (I'm not mad at the straight then curled look)
I use eight rags with shoulder-length, thick, wavy hair and my normal setting lotion for a vintage brushout. I've gotten the best results separating my bangs out into a big section, rolling that up to the scalp, then taking the rest of my crown into 3 curls, just sectioning to the temples. The temples and back of my hair get separated into 3 more curls, with an extra one at the bottom for the hairs at the nape of my neck. If I follow Loepsie's "preserving a set" tutorial, making five big pin curls around my head before I go to sleep, they last for three days, when I wash my hair next. Really, really nice shortcut, I encourage you all to try!
I wasn't surprised cause I saw my great aunt and my grandmom doing it many times when I was little in our vacation house but they used newspaper or magazine pages instead of rags =D I do it sometimes as well, especially when I want a 40's look ;-) xxx from the other side of the pond
I've been showering at night, and my hair is a disaster in the morning because it's naturally curly/wavy. Your explanation/way you showed how to do it was really simple and gave me the motivation to try again after several failed attempts. And I got it! Definitely excited to see how it'll turn out
I have shoulder length hair and I tried this out and omg it was awesome. I have a lot of trouble putting in curlers or braiding my hair but even I was able to do this. I used pillowcase strips and the curls came out so smooth and shiny.
This wasn’t what I was expecting either but I loved the result! I’ve got very thick hair so I’ll definitely need to do more curls but I’m wondering if I’ll get the same result that easily!
I think it looks good. The straight roots with the curls at the end give it a kind of page-boy inspired look, which looks pretty this way, like a more "wearable" version.
This looks like it would make a nice base for 1940s or Edwardian styles with lots of rolls and puffs around the face. It's probably the same technique as was used back then for those looks, too! It would also look really nice pulled back with combs, with either a centre or side parting.
Oh wow, not bad at all, seriously! The end result is fab, gonna try it out. I actually really like that only the length is curled, otherwise there is a strong danger of getting some real unexpected/unmanageable asymmetry due to natural hair twirls and stuff. You have a pleasant, quirky aestethic style which magnifies your beauty. Def gonna keep watching ur channel.
Looks like a WWII era style and it’s awesome. I have really long hair so I’d really love to try this. It might look super strange with my length but definitely trying it.
Looks like you accidentally discovered a quick and easy way to accomplish a classic 1940's hair style. It looks beautiful! I'll have to remember this method when my hair gets longer and give it a try too. I love the 40's look, but pin curls take forever to do sometimes.
So i actually use this metjod for my vintage bushouts because its more comfortable to sleep on than plastic rollers, for the first time trying this is amazing 😜
Okay, I tried it with four socks, and even though my hair was barely damp when I put it up, it was still wet when I got up in the morning. I tried blow drying it with the sock still in it, but it didn’t really work, and the curls fell out really quickly. This happens to me a lot with heartless methods (everything I’ve tried aside from pin curls, really) and I don’t know what to do about it!
Okay update! (That nobody asked for!) I finally broke down and bought a setting lotion online, and I guess that was what I’ve needed all along. It makes your hair dry much faster, like to the point that I have to be quick about setting the curls, it’s great! I’ve now switched from socks to strips of fleece like Lucy used (also scraps from my guinea pig cage’s lining, lol) and the curls are still a lot bigger than I want them to be. I’m using 8 strips, I guess I should try 12 next. But the socks do work really great for looser curls! :)
So, to save this look, you could pull it up high or down low with a ribbon (think Belle in beauty and the beast) just saying it would look sooooo amazing
I do this every other night! I usually do it on my hair once it's dried from washing and then use an anti frizz lotion as well, your ends can end up looking a bit frizzy from this if you're not careful 😂
I used this method for years but I used socks instead of rags and as many as 10 sections in my long thick hair. These curls look absolutely beautiful if you separate them with your fingers and then leave them to relax a bit. I cut my hair and tried it on short hair but it ended up looking a bit too Shirley Temple.
id love to see you try all of these curling methods again but eith your new short haircut! i assume it will be very different now with less weight of the hair.
I have a lot of hair, glass hair, doesn't hold dye, perm, curls, spray anything. Unless doing a lot more/longer than recommended. I like that this one is heatless
You can also just wrap the hair around the rag and your thumb/finger together. For some reason I’ve been having trouble keeping my fingers out of the way when wrapping and I keep getting bigger curls than I intended. :)
I have an appointment tomorrow and decided to try these curls tonight. I feel like I failed putting them in but I'll see, I hope it turns out as good as yours, otherwise I'll end up looking like a complete idiot lmao.

I actually love the outcome. Why did the finished do remind me of Lauren Bacall? There is a photo of her where she is wearing a knotted scarf standing sideways and glancing over her shoulder, that's what your hair do reminded me of. I liked it. 👍😀
As soon as I said you were using only 6 because your hair is thin, I laughed so hard because for my long, extra thick hair I use 6. I probably would have suggested 4 and a different set pattern for your hair if you want loose curls. But you ended up looking super cute like my grandma’s hair in her high school photos.
Amazing results! Just wondering, does Robbert ever say anything when you wear your hair to bed in all these ridiculous-looking curling methods, or has he just accepted it by now?
These types of rag curls always remind me of the 1994 adaptation of Little Women when Amy/Kirsten Dunst comes running down the stairs in her little rags 🥰

I use sponge rollers, but recently had the experience of someone thinking my hair is naturally curly. Funny how that works.
I was really shocked back in my school days when a classmate admitted her hair wasn't naturally curly. Maybe we just get used to it a certain way and assume people aren't putting the time in to curl it. :)
The straight-to-curled look is totally fine! That's actually how my hair dries naturally if I don't twist the top of my hair when it's drying 😅
Heatless curls are one of my favourite videos to watch. If you roll them differently next time give us another video please!! I feel like this should be part of the *Pin Curl diaries* as the result is pretty similar
Those curls suit you sooo well!! They give you a really elegant, vintage and sophisticated look and they go perfectly with your outfit too😍😱
After you brushed it out, it looked great and made your hair look very full. Unexpected great result📸
That is how my mother would wear her hair. I absolutely love it!
Honestly, I think these type of curls look really good on you. It's a very glam 1930's movie star look.
I was watching Pride and Prejudice 1995 and they showed the characters in rag curls
Because that's how they curled their hair in that era.
Aelith & Josh Carter I know lol
the only pride and prejudice
Aelith & Josh Carter I’ve always wondered how on earth they could curl their hair like that.
Elizabeth Hawk the bbc series is better imo

That turned out nice! I was wondering if you could address hair jewelry in their historic context? I love vintage hair jewelry.
I wasn't surprised cause I saw my great aunt and my grandmom doing it many times when I was little in our vacation house but they used newspaper or magazine pages instead of rags =D I do it sometimes as well, especially when I want a 40's look ;-) xxx from the other side of the pond
With the clip just on one side it looks like a lovely, and very easy, forties look.

Ahhhhh, you are making me itch to try curling my hair again!! I love how tight your girls came out, absolutely gorgeous!
I have shoulder length hair and I tried this out and omg it was awesome. I have a lot of trouble putting in curlers or braiding my hair but even I was able to do this. I used pillowcase strips and the curls came out so smooth and shiny.
I used to wear my hair like this back in high school (with only one side pinned back with a bobby pin)
This wasn’t what I was expecting either but I loved the result! I’ve got very thick hair so I’ll definitely need to do more curls but I’m wondering if I’ll get the same result that easily!
Elizabeth Pfeiffer I use 6 and I have long, thick hair. It makes a medium curl. I used 10 one time and that was a disaster...
Meagan Meredith oh good to know!! Thank you!
I really love how the brushes out curls look on you. You look so elegant with vintage hair, it deff suits you☺️
I think it looks good. The straight roots with the curls at the end give it a kind of page-boy inspired look, which looks pretty this way, like a more "wearable" version.

This is one of my favourite brush outs you've done!
Literallly Evie from The Mummy 😍
Your hair the moment you let it out, it’s awesome! Just beautiful.
I do this with socks!! It makes them a bit looser because it's more to wrap the hair around. They look great!
Firm favourite of mine, before most of my hair fell out due to an illness. Can’t wait to try this again once I have another foot of hair.
Oh wow, not bad at all, seriously! The end result is fab, gonna try it out. If you used two rags on each side, or something thicker, like a sock, you would get bigger curls! I’ve tried it and it works great!
I’m trying this tonight! I have four socks in my hair right now😅 I’ll try to remember to let you know how it goes!

@@mallory1304 Glad it worked out for you! 😊
I like that look. So simple to do! The result after the brush out seems very much like it was an episode of the pin curl diaries.
Lucy you're so silly! Think of how INSANELY tightly you were rolling the ends, of course the curls were tiny!! Very cute video :)
It looks amazing on you! Like vintage pin up curls/ old Hollywood curls🤍
I think it looks awesome before brushing!
The initial look is good if you're going to be in a 1970s disco costume. Your final look is lovely for anytime.
These curls look so good!!
I used to do this when I was younger. I did really tiny curls coz I love the volume!
Def gonna try this out. i have super long hair and have yet to figure out how to get tight enough curls for a proper 40s brush out.
I actually really like the straight then BAM tight curl look it’s really nice imo~!
I love it. Super vintage
You have your bangs back? They are so cute and look so good on you ❤
You have your bangs back?
I did this (my hair is medium length) and when I took it out in the morning my hair looked like Shirley Temple's
Wow! that's great! I also have thin hair and have struggled with trying to get a good brush out, I want to try this!
My Mom used to curl my hair this way when I was a child. I looked like really fluffy dandelion)
I love this look Lucy. I think only the one bobby pin looked the best.
Such an adorable final product! Love your videos ❤️❤️
Simple and amazing way of such vintage hairstyle... Loved it... Will try soon... 😍
I love this look! It suits you very well. It makes me want to try this soon too. Very 1950s outcome.
So, to save this look, you could pull it up high or down low with a ribbon (think Belle in beauty and the beast) just saying it would look sooooo amazing
Same thing happened to me the first time! My hair was down to my hips and when I took the rags out I had shoulder length curls!!!
That looks great! You did a great job! I feel motivated now to try this method!
It's lovely! Very vintage.
It seems so effortless honestly
I love your glasses! What brand are they?
I do this every other night! I usually do it on my hair once it's dried from washing and then use an anti frizz lotion as well, your ends can end up looking a bit frizzy from this if you're not careful 😂

I cut my hair and tried it on short hair but it ended up looking a bit too Shirley Temple.
my mum used to do these curls for as as children sometimes!
😂😂😂today yes today I saw your cutting see through bangs video 5 times and ended up giving myself.....
They are really pretty 😏
This look reminds me of Peggy Carter from the Captain America movies. Very elegant and pretty.
Do you think this could work for long hair? Mine is about 90cm long and absolutely no heatless curling method works
I know I'm late to the game, but I think it looks great!
This looks STUNNING!
Oh! I think it looks pretty! I used to rag curl my hair a lot.
The result was very nice and I love your top.
id love to see you try all of these curling methods again but eith your new short haircut! i assume it will be very different now with less weight of the hair.
I have a lot of hair, glass hair, doesn't hold dye, perm, curls, spray anything. Unless doing a lot more/longer than recommended. I like that this one is heatless
My hair is naturally curly, but I watched it anyway because it's you ❤
What setting lotion/spray do you use? I'm on the hunt for a good one
When I do my rag curls I wrap the hair and the rag round a lipstick tube to make the curl not so tight. You can also use a pencil or something 😁

Very vintage look! Nice!
Who are these people giving you thumbs down?!?! You’re lovely!
Also- you are so adorable with shorter length hair with the wave!
Everyone’s mom in the 80s 😂. Love it.
Agent Carter aesthetic yet easier and plausible with her schedule.
I do this on my daughter who has long hair and we get victorian ringlets it really will depend on the length of hair
Thank you for this video! I've always had trouble with rag curls, so this is really helpful. also by the way you are amazing:)
Looks good even from the beginning
That turned out so cute! ❤️
As soon as I said you were using only 6 because your hair is thin, I laughed so hard because for my long, extra thick hair I use 6. Love the results!!! 🤩
This looks lovely!
Which setting lotion do you use?
I would like to know that as well
Another fun hair video! Lovely way to start my day :)
🍁🍂Looks great!🧡 Very vintage '30s, '40s🍂🍁
This is something I want to try .
Amazing results! Just wondering, does Robbert ever say anything when you wear your hair to bed in all these ridiculous-looking curling methods, or has he just accepted it by now?
It looks so beautiful
Could you do a look inspired by the film "Land Girls"?
You should use oil or detangler when separating the big curls and use your fingers next time.
This looks beautiful on you.
Omg it looks great 💖
These types of rag curls always remind me of the 1994 adaptation of Little Women when Amy/Kirsten Dunst comes running down the stairs in her little rags 🥰
Isn’t it so much fun when you accidentally find a shortcut? That’s how humanity discovered things usually by a happy accident!!
When you brushed your curls, you looked so much like singer Karen Carpenter! 👏
Yay!!!! I love heatless curls! 😍
