I never thought, as a 50 year old male, that I'd be sat here watching a woman's hair tutorial. However, that being said, what a fabulous video. I love people taking on challenges. What a beautiful result. 👍👍
Must be something in the algorithm lately. I’m 50 years old too and this popped up in my recommendations today for some reason. I’ve never watched a single hair video on RUclips but they thought I needed to see this and they were right. Funny and talented people are great to watch no matter the skill they are displaying.
Legit this was heartwarming
@@cydrych mister baldwin, in these troubeling times i think the world deserves a video of you doing rag curls on your beard! pretty please *-*
@@saintsaens1992 😂😂😂👍🏻
Me too just popped up in my recommendations between a critical role and true crime video.. Anyway.. LOVE your hair, it came out wonderful!!!.. that style is awesome!!
At first I thought "I don't have the time". After seeing the results...I can make time..
You can do it watching TV, be warned, it's a work out, your arms will be TIRED, invite a friend over, do a girls night, have wine (or vodka, or whatever but finish the hair first! 😁
It's safe to say you've got time now
I was thinking the same thing!!!
My thoughts, "Ain't nobody got time for that!".... afterwards.. Oh WORD!!!!
@@TheLompalama Lol...I'm essential
Who else just got randomly recommended this and loved the beautiful end results?
Me!
I did!! Just brilliant!!
Me too! I didn't know what to expect - but I just loooove how her hair took the curl. I wonder how long they lasted 🤔
Me!
Omg! I'm obsessed!
"she doesn't have red hair" instant sub. They turned out GORGEOUS after you separated them
As a curly haired girl, my first thought was, this is going to be a disaster.... but WOW! You really pulled it off... adorable!
The end result when you separated them was gorgeous 😍
Melissa E I know. This makes me want to try it. It was beautiful and doesn't look frizzy.
Am going to try this
❤️
Hershekyss definitely trying this! She inspired me.
Indeed
This girl is too cute. Can't help but smile with her
I've tried various ways to curl my hair with without using heated products, and this is by far the most comfortable (because I sleep on them), and effective way (longer lasting without having to use a lot of hair products). I have to be careful separating the hairs though, because if I separate and brush too much, it looks like a ridiculous cotton ball. You look awesome.
This!
I actually love her hair with these curls damn
Same i was SOOO scared!
I just love CUUURRRRLS! I’m so jealous of all curls!
Gorgeous results!!
when she first removed the rags i was having dread locs vibes
GloryOkings OMG I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING 😭
That’s where they came from the ancient Greeks took notice .
Exactly what I thought too and then she said it right after 😁
GloryOkings it did look like she had locks
My mother’s family did this to her hair as a little girl growing up in the 40’s. She resembled Shirley Temple. These came out so gorgeous on her!!! Sharing cultural trends can be such a fun and positive experience. Thanks for sharing!!!
Gorgeous. After you separated them a little, wow!.
My grandma did rag curls ,and strips of brown paper bags ( from grocers),hard to sleep on paper. We wrapped much larger sections of hair ,like the girl did. You have the patience of Job!
I'm white ,my grandbabies are in college and biracial. I wonder if either would let me do this to them.
What two products did you use to wet your hair ?
By the way ,I thi you looked even better than the girl whose video you watched.
You looked absolutely beautiful . Those curls look amazing on you ,the way you did them( separating put a ,comb in side , and pinned top curl over to other side.
Watching how much work you did ,with all that hair, and how patient you are ,reminded me of all the work I had to do when doing my twin granddaughters hair.
They both have incredibly gorgeous hair.....like six heads full ! Lol. I loved buying and putting in all the hair " jewelery" for them when they were small, and elementary school age. I wish I could have had that for my hair as a child. I'd trade my hair with theirs in a nano-minute! They can wear so many amazing hair styles
Curly or straight. My daughter in law should open a salon. She always looks like a professional did her gorgeous hair !
One grand baby has an S curve ,the other has a Z. curl. There is a lot you learn about diff textures of hair by having diversity in your family! I have fine ,straight ,boring hair. I'm so glad they didn't get my or their fathers hair. Can't do alot with it. It breaks off really easy ,being dry and SO fine. I hate it !. Nothing super gorgeous like my girls , and daughter in law, or you can do. I'm envious!
I subscribed. First time I watched you. You're funny ,upbeat ,and I can't wait to watch more of your videos
I'll have to tell my granddaughters to watch you. I'll bet they subscribe !
Take care. Thank you for showing that.
Don't know why this showed up in my recommendations but I'm glad it did. My granddaughter has the same hair texture as yours and this is a brilliant technique. I'm going to try it on her hair.
My grandma was born in 1919, was a “beautician”, and she used to put my hair in rag curls all the time!
Same. Mine did it at bedtime and I had to sleep in them. It was almost impossible to sleep because they were so tight. I did love my curls in the morning. 😊
My Granny was born in 1908. She lived with us for a while when I was in Middle School and did my hair in rags a few times, too. Being born with straight, fine hair, it was such a joy to have those curls. They lasted for a long time, too. God took her home in Dec., 1996. Still miss her so much.
@@rebeccacurtis6680 yes! My Mimi was my best friend! I miss her so bad. But I know she’s waiting on me 🥰
My mom was born in 1942 and did rag curls on my long straight hair all the time when I was a kid. 😉
My grandmother was born in 1914.
And she would hot comb my hair and roll it in rags and brown paper bag strips.
I legitimately gasped with the end result. Absolutely GORGEOUS on you! So glad you tried the hairstyle!
They look amazing! I've done these a bunch of times on my daughters' hair - they have straight, fine white girl hair though.. but these are the curls that stay in best for them. The purpose of doing larger sections is that you end up with wider curls. I also usually double up the rags too, so they have a wider circumference to wrap around. They're so fun.
Thanks for the tips, I'm going to try this❣️
Rag curls were usually for holidays and little girls when we had Mary Jane shoes. white for spring..black patten leather for all other occasions. And still the best way to get no heat curls that last for days
I love it❣️❣️
@P PA1 I remember muffs, rag curls and Mary Janes
MY 4 YR OLD DAUGHTER SAID “HER HAIR LOOKS SO BEAUTIFUL! IT LOOKS DELICIOUS LIKE TWIZZLERS! “ 🤣🤣♥️

I love how anytime you do literally anything to your hair you end up looking like a total rockstar, you're gorgeous!
😊😊😊 you making me blush
Right! Beautiful every time!
Yup, these are facts 😍
truth
That is sooooooooooooooooo true
.
My mom would do this to my hair when I was little. My hair is like... Merrida from Brave, but dark brown and more dry and coarse. The rag curls were very soft and lasted a long while in my hair, so we did this style often. We used rags from the paint section of Lowe's and such, and brushed through the curls to make them not so tight. I could also sleep in the rags during summer months.
MY MOM USED OLD SHEETS AND yes you could sleep in them and the curls would last a while
my mom used to do this with my sisters hair and believe it or not, she used socks.
Man, this give me flashbacks. I used to sometimes do rag curls on myself in HS in the very early 80's. That's 1980s, not 1880s lol
🙌😆
Nice, that's funny.
🤣🤣
OMG I LOVE IT! Honestly I wouldn't have thought this could work on curly hair but it turned out absolutely gorgeous 😍 The magic really happened when you separated them. I'm jealous! ❤
I'm glad you loved it!! 😁 Oh! did I pronounce your name right? 👀
OMG this is so cool
as someone that follows both of you this is just like the BEST video/interaction

"she doesn't have red hair"
I'm dying 🤣
Oh my goodness!!! That’s amazing! Have been growing my hair out over the last year. Thanks for highlighting a cool historical technique, and encouraging us all to try things that may be outside of our comfort zone.
The ‘modern’ result looked fab on you… but I’m not gonna lie: 36 hours to dry + I can’t imagine how much time for the other prep gave me anxiety! Lol. I have curly hair & loath the time it takes. 20 whole minutes! Ha. If I made this video, it would be of my inevitable breakdown.
I feel it. I have thick, curly hair to my butt that turns into untameable frizz when i cut it. I avoid getting my hair wet at all costs unless the intention is to wash it. Drying my hair takes hours...
Girl, I am a white woman with really thick, fine hair (it's fine, but there is a lot of it), and I constantly air dry it. It will still be damp 6 hours later. How you managed 36 hours without going nuts is beyond me.
The style is gorgeous on you though. It looks so cool and trendy. If you can suffer the process, I think you should do it again. ^^ ❤
Same! Wayyyy too much work for all this hair. But if you have the patience, go for it! It's cute!
this is great for people who want to prevent heat/ chemical damage, no matter what hair type!! This video is great! thank you!!
Exactly
Very time consuming though ...but you're right!!
This is the only curling method that works in my hair. My hair is so straight that curling iron curls only last about 2 hours before my hair is straight again. These can last 3+ days (then I wash my hair, so I don’t know how much longer they would last)
before you separated them, they looked like takis😂 THE OUTCOME WAS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL
I thought the same thing 😂
I thought the same 😂 I'm eating Takis rn, I took one out for comparison
Or did the outcome look delicious? 😂😂😂😂
That is utterly stunning on you, it turned out gorgeous! (tip: if the fabric is a non-stretchy cotton or linen, it'll dry a lot faster.) I wish my hair looked that good.
you are so cute!! love the rag curls in your hair. i'm eastern european jewish with wavy/frizzy hair and my mom used to tie rag curls in my hair, though not as neatly. this looks sensational on you.
Okay but can we talk about the fact that whenever Vivi features another video she always shows that she leaves a like and that kind of support and positivity is why I love her so much!!!!
So true....Viv is truly amazing
Yes! Her positive energy is so refreshing.
YES!!!!
Maisie Hall your comment and theirs had me subscribe other then seeing her energy for myself 😀 I need more positive feeling videos in my life.
Can we also talk about the fact that every time Viv follows a "White Girl's" tutorial her hair ends up looking amazing.
I know these started as a joke, but Viv knows how rock a hairstyle. Whether it's one of her own amazing creations or something inspired by somebody else.
Your style turned out so cute! I'm a 57 year old Black woman and like many women commenting here, as a child this was the main method my grandmother (born 1911) would curl my hair. She did it mainly for special occasions, like my first grade school photo. Rather than t-shirts she used fabric from old cotton sheets. Probably simply because that's what we had that was long enough and abundant, ( I had long, very thick hair.)
I remember that they were painful to sleep on
@@Pepacheck now that you mention it, yes, they were!
I'm a 67 year old white woman & my Mother used to curl my pony tail by using strips of white sheets too! She made two curls in that one pony tail. I too had long, thick hair. Love your video!!
save the rags as you can reuse them. Using the coconut curling Moose will help hold curls as well as cut down on frizz
The earliest perms involved wrapping hair this way, but on steel rods, with a piece of string. Then, chemical pads were applied, and each rod was attached to a plug that was wired to a machine that applied heat to chemically steam the texture into the hair. It was scary, and there was always the risk of an electric shock, or burning the hair or scalp or ears.
Was this those perms from the 1920's??
Oh wow!
Oh, like that terrifying scene in Cats Don’t Dance where Darla Dimple is plotting to destroy Danny’s career while her giant butler is clamping her hair into a machine to curl it?
Who else scrolls through the comments as their watching the video 😂
Kenna _ here only you
Me
I was scrolling when I saw your post. Do it all the time LOL
ah, you caught me.
No cuz i didnt want any spoils hahaha
I’m almost 50, and when I was a small girl. My granny (born in 1904) would rag curl my hair. Always turned out good.
Aww sweet memories
Cute memory
Granny did this back in the day. Nothing new to us!
Mine too.
What a great authentic way to experience and share cultures. Love how you did that, being clear and honest about the origin and making adjustments that suit you. Definitely Subbing (though I'm bald and don't know why it was recommended LOL. I know people who will love it though)
Honestly this is a perfect heat-free way to curl, volumize and make your hair look all that much better
I'll even give everyone a little secret (I don't know if this works for ALL hair types but) - If you rag-curl your hair every single night for let's say, about two years at the least it will gradually "train" your hair to become "naturally" curly. So, if you have a lot of time and dedication you can eventually have permanent curls even after washing, getting it wet, etc. Only catch is you have to retrain new growth, so if you cut it all off you have to start over.
The algorithm brought me, and I realized just now that I desperately needed to see a stranger smile like that today. Thank you
As a curious white woman, I love when people of different cultures try other
cultures' beauty routines. The world gets a little smaller and a little prettier when we learn from each other. Love your hair 😍💐
I honestly have no idea how the RUclips algorithm lead me here beyond being subscribed to some black creators but i'm glad it did. Not only did I love seeing the way the experiment came out (especially when she separated the curls at the end) but its so heartening as you say to see a mutual love-in over cultural exchange without having some woke moron turn up and start ranting about cultural appropriation. Sharing ideas, learning from each other and becoming closer through shared interests should be what life is about
I agree, Sarah. I love how her hair turned out. After she separated her curls, it was nothing short of fabulous.
It was such an odd way to express that you’re single and ready to mingle (curls up vs down) lol but to each their own!a neat no heat styling trick
Since when is it OK for a white woman to try other cultures hair style? What planet have you been living on lately? A white woman can't wear braids cause it's considered cultural appropriation but a black woman can go buy some white woman's hair and put it on and its A-ok.
@@BigBabyJane
Both the Vikings and ancient Celts wore dreadlocks, so it wouldn’t be cultural appropriation to wear them.
Gotta say I was shocked by the result. It genuinely looks awesome!!
Love those rag curls on you! I loved those mostly after you separated them with a more updated look!
That. Was. Incredible.
Your hair looked amazing!
Hugs from a wee white Scotswoman 😊
Karas Aunty cool hi
This turned out soooo amazing when you separated them! I was not ready for the magnificence.
😊😚 you're the sweetest!
Wow, that’s actually a cute look. Really bouncy.
The results were so beautiful! This might be a healthier alternative to dreads. You get a similar aesthetic and your hair doesn’t have to to be to tightly threaded or twisted together.
locs ("dreads") are healthy, though? the entire point of the style is to help the hair grow and maintain length. It is very beneficial and low-maintenance, if you have the correct hair-type of course. I have the right hair for it but the only reason I would never do it is because once you have them in for a while you cant take them out, and Im the type of person who likes to change my hair style often.
O my goodness, I am old as hell, I can remember having this done to my hair when I was a child. I am 73 years old. I had completely forgot about this technique. We used cotton hose. Before silk stockings, hosiery came up above the knee and were tied into a knot to stay up. They were similar to tee shirt material. These were cut up into similar long strips. The curls were called Shirley Temple Curls, she was a child actress who was “Honey Bo Bo like”. The slaves cosmetologist performed this services on theirs “mistresses hair”. Kinky hair was straighten before it was “rapped”. As a pioneer natural hair stylist, I used a long foam covered rod or flat plastic strips to wrap natural hair like yours. You hair is beautiful and I appreciate your joyful youth. Thank you for reviving such happy history. @rudu305.
Oh cool the hair style looks super rad

My mum would do this for me and my sister when I was younger. Mainly if we had a party or “event” and we’d get so excited. My mum bless her heart was never good with hair so the whole process would be a series of tangling and knotting but it’s crazy to see you doing it! Brought back lots of memories ❤️ 🥰
My Mum did the same thing for me and my sister :)
I still do it on my daughter's hair when she lets me, lol
Awesome guys!
As an old chick I can tell you that actually, little girls of colour used to do rag curls all the time too! They wore them BOTH in the semi-dred fashion and loosened like you did! You look SOOOO PRETTY with it❣️❣️❣️
Willow Murdock yes my grandmother would use paper bags
My grandmother used paper bag strips, too. Cloth was too valuable and used for repairing clothing or making "rag rugs". She's from the Depression era.
Victoria Edwards oh yes! My sister & I did paper bag curls all summers! I should do my little ones hair in paper bag curls!!
@@WillowMurdock Do! Our children will not know how to be creative and use things like paper for hot pressing or strips of Rags for curls or rolling your hair with beer cans!
Teach your little ones all the hacks your grandmother and great-grandmother taught... Who knows when they'll be useful!?!
Willow Murdock Yeah I’ve seen it in old pictures.
Oh my gosh!!! I love the results!!! They look awesome on you!!!!
Was thinking "ooh I'll try this on my daughter!" -she makes rope Maori styles with her hair like what we'd do for Poi making but boom she makes it almost look viking. Dunno if I can do this exactly though her hair is mid thigh now ❤ I'd need 6ft strips of material 😆😆
That's when you cut up an old sheet.
Torrin Paige has a great tutorial for longer and straighter hair, it's a very old tutorial though
Victorian women had hair to their knees, I hope you figured it out lmao
I didn't expect these videos to be this sweet, pure and appreciative of everything... some people try out hair styles from other ethnicities and trash them...
But you try to make everything WORK FOR YOU!! You have a gorgeous personality and a beautiful smile! You make every video so sweet.
I think my favourite part is that Viv doesn't really have to try to make these styles work - most of the time they just do. It's a testament to "Don't knock it till you've tried it", I think a lot of time people just assume styles won't work or that they have the wrong hair type.
She doesn’t know that it’s actually not a white girl thing it’s just a tutorial from a white girl most hairstyles that white women did back in the day was learned from the black peoples around them but video is cute none of the less. It’s fine for everyone to do hairstyles as long as they know and appreciate/ acknowledge where they came from.
Nati Whatever actually this isn’t a white hairstyle. Black women and other women have been curling there hair with rags for many many moons.
@@heyitsliz5664 as did every other culture 🙄 It's not like changing, braiding, curling, bleaching, doing whatever with your hair "belongs" to anyone.
@@saundrad2317 From my research on ancient Greece, this is originated there. I just want everyone to feel beautiful, no matter how they choose to wear their hair (I've got super curly hair and think this might be a way to stop the frizz and it actually look nice).^-^

Just like they do using regular old rollers.
I do 3 strand flat twists on my hair like once a week. I've got strong arms now! And usually once you get past the first ~ 4 in/10cm from your head it's not so bad.
I like how the finished product accentuated your curls. And it didn't need perms or damaging heat on the hair.
doesnt twisiting your hair still damage it
Trapmoneybenny no it doesn’t. Think about it like... does twisting a piece of string hurt it? No. Does burning that piece of string or adding chemicals that will strip out the color (let’s say color is representative here of essential proteins and oils) hurt it? Yes.
if her hair color is permanent that will cause damage to her hair as well
@@AK4Uwolfen If you twist individual hairs yes, if you twist locks of hair no.

Definitely doing this now instead of flexi rods. Same results, but these seem like they will be more comfortable to sleep in, and I feel like it would dry faster.
Yesitsmedaphne be careful my great grandma died from catching pneumonia from sleeping with wet hair in rag curls.
It does. The thicker you want the curls, the more hair you add to the rag. The more hair that you add to the rag the longer it will take to dry.
