@@samfreelancer2657 They've added additional manufacturing facilities in Japan, but the UK ones are still producing. If you want manufacturing in a particular region to grow, be careful to buy goods made from the region.
Hi bflance. I made this film and was really impressed by the staff at the plant. They were actually paid quite well as far as I could tell and were all really jolly. Yes, they knew i was coming of course, and may have been briefed but, you cannot hide the real atmosphere in a workplace. I had quite a few very nice conversations with the women working on the line. They were friends working together in a quality workplace. It looked like a nice place to work.
Wrong. You don't send children for 50 years of prison because they are minors and minors are not considered fully developed to make appropriate decisions.
Thanks for the advice, I was tempted by the zero but I'm not great at this stuff to be honest. Though 20 years ago I was so maybe I should have a dig around but taking onboard your advice!
Sony is a villain for me (DRM on Playstation thingy) but it's better for not being manufactured under Foxconn curse fucking shit in China. I just have known that Sony was/is manufactured the element 14 version of this, my mind has just blown. I think I should build my own ill fated *Sony Rolly* . seriously it's harder to find the latest model on ebay.
Arghh... no ESD-wrist straps at any place in the production. At 2:17 you can see one person on the right side sitting with the feet half in air. They all wear normal trousers - so at this point this person is no longer grounded. One of the reasons why wrist-straps are always preferrable. At 2:25 you can see that the people are wearing Polyco P Grip gloves (in this case 201-MAT). This gloves have a insulating polyurethane palm coating and are not dissipative. An absolute no-go in an ESD-Environment. I could not see any grounding on the workmats. Doesn't look like a real high production standard. Most times an ESD-Damage will not be detected in electrical testing - but several time later (days to years) the part will have a higher failure rate at the customers site...
They might have ESD mats on their tables, and they touch them time to time thus discharging. But not always, of course, and there might be same rare cases when they kill a Pi. But as long as these are one digit figures, they don't care much.
camelCased As said before - there is no visible grounding of the workmats, so touching them will not really help. ;) Every device that failes due to ESD will make a customer unhappy - i am sure that this is something they should care about.
@Carsten Ellwart. I worked at the Sony Pencoed plant when they manufactured TV's and the Whole floor area is a special ESD Flooring to which the operators wear a ESD foot strap on their shoes which takes away any static Electricity from the person. Hope this helps.....
I just bought my pie last week, the board still says made in China. I'm sure that the raw board (no components/traces) is made in China. But board design/assembly is done in the UK.
its great product and i love it, but at same time it kinda saddens me to see all these workers in that factory doing same boring monothomic work everyday.. and probably being paid quite low too.. at least their work is going (at least partialy) to benefit the children by providing a good learning tool into computing world for new generations.
Yes this work is boring. Many many factories are the same. However, some people actually like that monotony. They just go into their heads and get on with it. It does help not to be too intelligent. Intelligent people struggle with repetitive tasks as there is no creativity involved.
Except that actually everyone calls it the Union Jack, apart from a few people who think some obscure post-hoc rationalisation of the name trumps customary usage.
I have my RPi B from RS Components, but on board is printed "Made in China" for some reason, not UK :( BTW I received it about half year ago. Maybe that's a reason?
There's no green in the Union Jack because Wales was conquered by England, and the Jack was only created much later to symbolise the (more consensual) union of England, Scotland and Ireland, and Wales counted as part of England at that time. In the last couple of decades there has been a resurgence of Welsh national identity and language.

Ok, and why is shipping for pi so high? I live in Europe and shipping cost is bigger than cost of pi!!! Thank you very much element14 and bloody dhl/ups and other mail scum bags for that. Most annoying thing is that I received from UK running shoes in huge box and shipping cost with royal mail was only 12 euros. God bless ROYAL AIR MAIL!!!
Lol this. The only reason why this is cheap, is because instead of using slave labour in China, we are using machines instead. Like he said it's mainly automatically assembled The only real difference would be the wage difference between UK and China workers, but I'd guess that when you consider shipping from China, that all adds up
I see what the other one was now. I searched through the Wikipedia Flags until I found it. Obviously the flag on the left is Japan. The one on the right is Wales. I cannot post the link here due to RUclips being stupid, but search Wikipedia for Wales, UK and you will find the flag.
At 5:52 through 5:55 you can see the flags of what nations? I never knew the UK had those colors... But seeing every last worker wearing the slave-tag of Sony makes me not want to own a product made by them anyway.
Great to see something like this made in the UK, and not China.

There are two major distributors of the Raspberry Pi in the UK. Element 14 are making the boards in Pencoed.
