I too, am a member of the Tweed Brotherhood. I don't have a 5E3, but I have the 5E9. That's the Tremolux. It does exactly the same things that yours is doing, with the addition of the early style tremolo. There's no opto coupler, it changes the bias of the inverter, and it's vastly different from the later trems. It's more like riding the volume knob rather than the "on-off" kind of sound you get with black and silver face models. Leo Fender should have gotten the Nobel Prize for amp design. Every one of those things, from the Champ, up to the Bassman or the twin, are spectacular. The only Tweeds that I don't instantly love are the ones that need work, and when that's done, they join the family as members in good standing. They are among some of the finest products that this country has ever produced. I can't imagine how anybody could be a guitar player and not want one. Thanks for posting, I've known about all of the Tweed voodoo for many moons, but it was fun watching you go through the moves with yours. Your enthusiasm made this fun to watch, and besides, you're a hell of a player. You got lotsa heart brother!
Absolutely the best explanation on how to use this circuit and how it works YT video of all time!!!! Love your plying and passion This helped me a million fold!!!
Wow, awesome demo and playing! Thank you so much. It's absolutely incredible how Leo Fender got SO MUCH right, so early on, that it's still a benchmark 60-70 years later... and he wasn't even a guitarist!!
Nicely done! I've owned & gigged with an original '58 5E3 since 1979. Lemme clarify - the normal channel was originally intended for hiZ microphones and used a 12AY7 instead of a 12AX7 for the input stage. To my ear the AY7 offers a bit more "breath" in the 5E3's tone
This is a very high-value video. You probably sold me on a ‘57 custom deluxe (currently have a champ). Simply the best video on this amp available. Your knowledge and competence with this equipment to a very high standard.

I know plenty of great Guitarists but your time, perfect dexterity, emotion and versatility make you "dare I say" Best guitarist in the world. And I'm always reluctant to use the word "Best" but I will here.
The 5E3 is an awesome amp! However I would like to mention something useful that is almost always overlooked... You can use an A/B box to switch between the inputs for clean and dirty channels Set one volume at 3 or 4 and the other up around 9. You can choose whether to turn the Normal or Bright up or down depending on how it sounds with your guitar. Additionally you can use lo input on one channel and hi I put on the other. This can be a very useful setup for the 5E3 and literally NOBODY ever mentions or demos it. Give it a try. You're welcome! 🤘
That's an interesting approach. But he's using some many combinations of interactive volume for just one channel, it seems like the A/B box switching could limit some of those options.
You are one passionate young guitarslinger! Rock on! What a crazy good demo. I thought I knew it all about this beauty of a circuit. More tweaking baby. Thank you heaps for your great playing and sharing your experience with the 5E3!
Have owned one for almost a month now. It’s totally amazing, the interactive controls, tons of dynamics and a bottom end like I’ve never heard before. It’s the last amp I’ll ever need.
Hard to get an engineer to agree with ,.. till he sees what you're saying . Been in countless fights with telling that another volume knob effects Tone. Triple 7's is magical. Thanks for the Video!😀👍🏼💯
Finally! An overview of the 5E3 the demonstrates why it is legendary. I don’t own one, and might never, but totally respect it as a creative tool. For gigging, however, I need more immediate access to several sonic flavours literally « on tap »😊 Jay, thanks as usual for the passionate and creative content you produce-also, for the diplomatic reminder that we all need to explore our gear to their full capabilities, as wonderful surprises await🙏
My gosh man, you’re playing is so beautiful and chaotic all at once. Great video! Love my 5e3 and this perfectly covers all the little quirks and nuances that make it so great.
Some great detail in using an old school amp there buddy, some fab playing too.. Very few show how to really use such an amp to its best effect & ability between guitar & amp and you've nailed it! I have a LazyJ20 and love how the amp is an instrument in itself, This method also works wonderfully with a Fender Blues Junior too to get those output valves cookin with glorious tone at your fingertips. These type of amps also take pedals in the front end perfectly too. Once you've mastered its amazing capabilities, It really is THE REAL DEAL TONE MONSTER !
I built one of these years ago, only recently falling in love with it after buying an attenuator. (It's a really loud amp!) The circuit is a work of art. The tones are so variable and beautiful. It's incredibly touch sensitive, too. It's quickly become my favorite amp.
Wow - I have a 5E3 that I took on a trade and I had no idea what this wonderful little amp is capable of. You show so much love in all the sound combinations. I'm going to go try to get some of that myself right now!! Awesome video Jay!
Best 5E3 tutorial I've seen so far. No wonder Niel Young went so deep into this amp to figure out his fave presets. An amazing blend of clean, grit and dirt in a fairly complex blending of what seems like should be 3 simple controls!
Love the circuit interactions of the '50s Tweed amplifiers, ditto for the '50s Gibson Les Paul wiring, so many small nuances' it takes a bit of time to learn what the amp/guitar combo are capable of. Great demo, lots of great information and you kept it interesting. Also, thank you for your minimalistic signal chain (Guitar, Instrument Cable, Amplifier), very much appreciated that you kept is simple and concise.

Not a single "awesome", "like", "literally", or any of the other junk language most people use. Wow, so he's articulate, too! Then there's the fact that he can play. Kudos!
Jay, this video is fantastic and covers everything you need to know about the 5E3. I had a Fender CS Tweed Deluxe head years ago, loved it, but sold it like an idiot. I picked up a brand new combo last month and just put an Alnico Blue in it. I have literally owned over 100 amps in my time. Everyone should try this amp at least once in their career to feel the truth of tube powered tone. This is the benchmark amp for me! Thanks again for the video, great job.

To answer your question as a tube amp designer, I love a deluxe and all of the interactive controls. you can better dial in a tone then, use your guitar controls and an overdrive to get everywhere you want to be.
Thanks for making this video. I built a 5E3 kit and it this is very helpful. I would also suggest a good attenuator because this amp is very loud when you are using many of these settings. A good attenuator allows you to tame this beast of an amp and hear these amazing tones at bedroom levels.

Considering a 5E3 amp and this truly is the full in-depth look at the interactions of the volumes, channels , and tone. This answered all my questions. Thank you for doing what you do.
Great demo! I’m a simple dude, I want to understand what my gear is doing enough to get the tones I want. Whether that be a knob that is well labeled, or having this new found knowledge of a jumped 5E3, I’m happy when I can dial in what’s in my mind, but also, get surprised when I’m looking for something new.
Great job, you covered it all except the "Throwing it off a cliff" test. You hammered that amp good and proper and it did'nt flinch once! I played a similar heavy handed style once through an expensive super modern "Built like a tank" combo at a recording session and the thing began to melt and fill the air with smoke, the funny thing is the owner was'nt upset at all as she opened a cabinet and pulled out an old "Champ" which had been retired cos it was too basic and old fashioned according to the company that sold her the combo with bells and whistles, stereo chorus, complex eq, in/out , 2x10 speakers but it did'nt like dynamics( more like a hifi) so if you played the same way all the time softly it was happy and sounded good but as soon as you changed the attack it would groan and make some really weird sci-fi sounds like it was possesed and eventually it just became a carcass for spare bits. The Champ just keeps getting better the more you use it. Thanks again for the viddy
Great video and demonstration. I love my 5e3 and 5b3 clones but rarely ever get to enjoy them. They're just too loud. I literally played through a tweed champ clone at pracrice and it had no problem keeping up.
I am surprised you didn’t mention how loud the 5e3 is when you are sitting that close to it. I myself have a 5c5 which works much the same way as the 5e3. I like straight forward amps live and in the studio, I appreciate the ones with hidden features like the 5e3.
As nice a guy as he seems to be, it’s criminal for him to make people believe that you can dime a 5e3 and sit next to it. It’s one of the most tactile listening experiences I’ve ever had. It sends shockwaves through your body that make you want to either run or turn it down 😂
J Leonard Jay.. thank you for you fantastic playing and teachings! I have a Lil’ Dawg 5e3 amp and this really helped me more than anything else! I immediately put this into practice… literally the guys in the band were loving my tones last week, because I much more knew what I was doing with it.. and I have been more confident and even more pleased with my awesome sound. Thank you!
Fabulous !!! Thank you for this video, your playing is absolutely fantastic, and you get all tones you want only with your guitar, the amp… and your fingers, while many of us can reach a few of these tones with a lot of pedals. Great ! 🤩
Fantastic video! I've been playing a 5E3 (Clark Beaufort) since 2006 and I knew the controls were interactive, but I never really messed around with them much. I just found a sound I liked and it was set it and forget it (especially in the last couple years a s a clean pedal platform split to a Vox AC15HW60).. Now I'm eager to mess around more with it. Really great video.
A local builder here in Melbourne (Barry Marie @ Barwatt) will be putting one of these together for me. This video is invaluable and has me super excited to have a play with it. Might even goose it with the Univox Unidrive I built for myself :). Thank you so much!
Wow!! That seems like the perfect amp for guys like me who cannot be arsed with a dozen pedals... Can you get all the variety of "experiences" at home/garage volume?
I just turned a Bogen Challenger 33 into a 5e3 with the same caps as the one you have! Weird coincidence. It’s 25 watts with the Bogen’s power transformer (I put a new Hammond output transformer in because the Bogen one was bad) so I added a VVR which is like having a variac inside the amp that doesn’t effect the heaters. Anyway, I LOVE it and wish I could keep it but it’s already sold. A Valco 6161 built from a Knight integrated amp is next on the list! 6973’s!
This is *the* definitive 5E3 demo. Great job on "the one amp to rule them all"!!
Thank you for doing this without effects! It is so nice to hear the amp.

This was amazing, thank you!
Thanks man! I learned a lot... I'm going to go play with my vintage 5E3 and my Victoria version and see the differences.
Considering a 5e3.. thx for the demo and lesson. Excellent job 🤙🏽
Happy to help!
Perfect demo, Amazing talent !
Just what I needed to pull the trigger on one 👋👍
Thank you
I think your channel would explode if you created a good lesson series, your playing is superb.
Killer demo. Bustin all the styles. I'm going for one based on my 5watt Champ spoiling me for life.
A local builder here in Melbourne (Barry Marie @ Barwatt) will be putting one of these together for me. This video is invaluable and has me super excited to have a play with it. Might even goose it with the Univox Unidrive I built for myself :). Thank you so much!
No prob! Happy tweaking :)
Wow...pretty amazing ... thanks for that!
I wish my brain worked that fast. Nice.
Wow!! That seems like the perfect amp for guys like me who cannot be arsed with a dozen pedals... Can you get all the variety of "experiences" at home/garage volume?
you can with an attenuator - the amps actually pretty loud without it !
@@sam127001 yeah that's what I thought but you can never tell with these YT demos 👍
Superb demo. Thank you for posting.
My pleasure!
This is great!
I have a original 5e3 and sounds fantastic.
This demo shows all right.
Thx bro
Great demo. Thanks!
Sounds f awesome!!!!
So much I didn’t know about my amp! Thank you! I have some playing around to do tomorrow!
Enjoy!
Sweet tones!
Thanks for your excellent demonstration of this versatile amp 👍🙂👌 Now I just need to decide whether to build this or the 5E9 Tremolux 🤔😋 Subscribed!
Oooh, those Tremolux amps do indeed seems amazing!
@@JayLeonardJ Yes, they sure do! 🙂👍
Excellent video. Thanks for all your time and hard work!
My pleasure!
