Like I'm pretty sure the entire point of finding President Shinra alive instead of impaled on his desk was to give Barrett a final confrontation with his ultimate Disc 1 enemy? I really don't understand what else you could have wanted from that scene.
I mean sure you can complain that they didn't 'close out that arc satisfyingly', but it doesn't make any sense for Barrett to have a huge cathartic moment about his motivations and his mission until you meet Dyne.

Always loved the weird humor that FF7 always had, and the remake kept a lot of it in, surprisingly. Sometimes it's a dark, serious, cyberpunk, grungy story, but sometimes it veers off into weird 70's and 80's manga gag humor at times. Only other time that a Final Fantasy game did this stuff to my recollection was FF5.

It just hit me that they probably did that to lure new people into a false sense of security, and then when Aerith dies they'd be like "no, but Barret didn't die that time" and then all their hopes come crumbling down when they realise it's for real this time.

I think what they're going to do instead is use the plot going off the rails to sow false hope that she'll survive. Maybe even play out the scene shot for shot only to have Cloud deflect Sephiroth's sword at the last second. But she'll still die, just in a slightly different way.

I also love that as soon as President Shrina has a weapon he's confident enough to call Barret out on his BS because yes, Shrina is evil and needs to be stopped but Avalanche really hasn't thought through what a world without them would be like or how the people would react to the world they know, the world Barret hates so much, being suddenly ripped away from them.

I think it wasn't so much as clearing avalanche, as it was barret wanting everyone to know Shinra for the evil things they've done. He wants the public to hate him as much as he does. I wouldn't really say he is selfish, just blinded by his desire for revenge. Though I can't say I blame him given his backstory
Well, Shinra committed mass murder and blamed Avalanche... I too would want the people to know the truth. If Shinra would spill it to the public then yes, not only would Avalanche's name be cleared but also almost all of Barret's problems would be solved. People wouldn't trust Shinra anymore.
Yeah, that's why I love how this story was done in the original. There are obvious environmental messages in it, but there's a balance to it. I'm glad that the remake is sticking to that (For now).
@Luis Alvarez he cares but he hated Shinra to the point of blinding him and as Cloud outs it his black and white world of his is a result of that. In the original was the same and he didn't accepted it until Reeve calls him out on his bullshit before the final battle.

Can't wait to have that glorious healing chaos in my party lol. I managed to have Cloud pulling off 4000 heals in my first playthrough.
I have to say, his casual/bored toss of a healing spell over his shoulder out of battle is one of my favorite of his animations.
Brian Dinan i never played the remake, but she certainly seems a lot more useful there than in the original, i never really used her in the original not only because of you know what, but on my first playthrough, she did a third of cloud’s normal attack damage, and i couldnt keep relying on mp, so i just ditch her the first chance i get every time. An actually useful normal attack, some good support skills, and an overwhelming magic stat just make her seem so much better

I was watching as he was playing it live and I was so blown away by the set design, the 3rd phase music, the Jenova monster, the moment in the story... everything. I was completely stupefied with giddiness. Games don't hit these bullseyes very often.
I've never played an FF game, but, if they keep hitting these same high notes throughout the entire story... Final Fantasy, as a franchise, I think is reaching a height I don't think it's ever reached, and this can bring in, and is bringing in, a lot of new people. I'm one of those. I'm gonna follow this remake saga or trilogy or whatever it ends up being, to the end. Count me in. Hopefully this will make the big, numbered FF entries better from now on. It's raising the bar a lot for FF games.
IF ONLY Final Fantasy in general had had characters like this, good writing, this level of music, etc, for the past 20 years... it would be one of the biggest franchises out there. It's a shame it isn't. These games are an amazing celebration of human imagination. It's a shame they aren't more popular.
All I can do is wish the developers and the team the best of luck with this whole endeavour. It's not going to be easy. This is a fantastic start. Now they just have to run to the finish line in this same style. Hats off for the first entry. If they do it the whole way, I'll freaking bow to these people.
I bet if they keep raising the bar to this level that they can justify raising the cost of a cd. I would not mind.
FF4-12 and plenty of spin offs had charicters like this people just get mixed up with the KH interpretations, Advent Children and FF13's flaws which had very aquward charicters
Recent games had rather po-faced serious characters in serious settings, whereas the original FF7 neatly walked the tight rope of really fun, memorable characters in a setting that had personality. Remake is exploring AND reliving those moments like how we imagined them 20 years ago.

I'll say this, if one scene truly dissapointed me, it was the trail of blood scene. That is, bar none, my favorite moment from FF7's early game. The shear brutality of the moment, the corpses, the blood, the music, it was quite possibly one of the creepiest moments I've ever experienced in a non-horror game. Not that this is bad, per-say, but it lacks some of the impact of the original and how it set-up Sephiroth as a straight monster.
Edit: With that said, the game quickly makes up for it with the Jenova and Rufus fights back to back, so I can't complain too much.
I agree with you on this! I wanted that blood and insane claw marks on them walls!! I would have been scared shitless if they made that a reality in this game!
It would have been nice, but with the crazy good graphics it probably would have elevated the game to an M rating.

I kinda wish president Shinra's gun had materia on it, so that it doesn't seem so silly for Barret to be intimidated by a little pistol considering the flying tripple minigun bosses that they've encountered (or the huge ass arsenal they encounter later on) I hate it in video games when you go from wading through mass assault rifle fire in gameplay only to become a mere mortal in the cinematic, where a single pistol is more threatening than a firing squad.
One of the things I really liked about Advent Children, for all its flaws, was how, if someone shot Cloud in the face, the worst that would happen is he would react as if he was punched, (and break his shades)
Unless of course, that shot was amped up through materia.
Seriously, this game is everything. Playing the original was amazing back then, playing the remake is equally amazing now. The characters, voice-acting, music, battle system is top notch. Best Final Fantasy I’ve played since IX. Looking forward to part 2 soooo much!
The Jenova fight was everything I've ever wanted, I had goosebumps the whole fight and an awesome tear started falling when the music kicked in!
I also love how they are spotlighting the games weirder enemies like the Brain Pod in this chapter, it was definitely an "OH MY GOD" moment!

Max, the experiment guys thay you think aren't in the OG are, just not as a moster you can fight. In Cloud's flashback of the Nibelheim events he and Sephiroth find humans mutated by experiments that exposed them to crazy high levels of mako. They're in the pods in the reactor. These are those mutants, now in pods in Hojo's various labs.

Its pretty meta, Im actually quite diggin it. Kinda ties in well with the narration from the remake trailer because of how self aware it is.
I also liked that you fought jenova at the president's office. Every time there was dramatic part in the story you fought Jenova in the original. This jenova fits in perfectly. Also jenova being called Dreamweaver is fitting. Everything they added to the game fits so perfectly it's hard to complain. Such a great game.
That scene with Barrett right before the boss fight was just to make sure he gets kicked out of the party and you don't have to manage it at all.

Getting swerved like that oof! The teamwork throughout Hojo's lab is quite admirable, but that Jenova battle theme though. So much to do! Really glad to see how each phase unfolded. Also, I love it each time a summon enters the fray. Just like having an extra body to deal damage!
This episode has so many highlights, and there are so many things they knocked out of the park. One criticism though, is the walk to the president's office. That is a true horror movie moment in the OG game, as there are white walls splattered with blood everywhere and it looks like the most horrific massacre ever takes place right before you enter. Here you follow a trail of purple goo. Not quite the same level of impact. But then that Jenova fight kicks in and it's off to the races.
I only just realized Sephiroth wrapped his mother with his black cloak that he no longer wears... god damn.
For the first 2 minutes i thought it was RE remake not FF7R....Such intensity with music, sound effects and graphics of the game...It is enhancing the general ambiance of each part of the game. This is FUCKING sick dude!

I cannot say how much I’m enjoying your play through the most. I don’t have a PlayStation but I’m an OG player of ff7 so this is my only means of enjoying it. But to be honest I don’t think I would have had half as much fun playing it as I have watching you play it. So thank you and look forward to the next upload.

Counterstrike dropkicks pretty much everything. Ranged, magic, melee, even from across the room sometimes.
It scrazy months later rewatching your playthrough of this gem, and how much freezing and frame drops you got, while both of my playthroughs didnt look this rough
One thing that i was annoyed so much during this LP: Max always complaining about droped frames (literally the name of one of the spoilercasts 😅).
I also think that was only his recording-computer. Game seemed to be fine for him.
Still can't fathom how this didn't sweep the goty 2020 o well.
This game gets so many things right. But one thing that I don't hear spoken about often is the portrayal of Hojo. In the original game, Hojo, never, even once comes across as a big threat, he just seems like a Shinra lackey with knowledge of Sephiroth's plans. Then like 90% of the way through the game, he is outed as the second most evil villain in the entire universe. What the remake gets right about Hojo, is that they staple him on as one of the most predominantly evil individuals in this universe, before you're even out of Midgar, and I think that sets up a lot for the eventual confrontation with him, as opposed to the original's.

When that final stage of the fights start and the arrangement shifts to mirror the OG Jenova theme, I got fucking goosebumps.
That moment when Phase 3 Jenova Dreamweaver kicked in :O

I almost cried when Barret was stabbed. I was like well I guess he dies instead of Aerith.
I absolutely adore this game's trend of turning seemingly average enemies from the original game into straight-up boss fights. I like that, actually--they stand out more and makes them memorable (not that anyone would ever forget something like Hell House, for example).
Jenova theme is probably my favorite and glad they put it in. When it hit that song gave me chills of joy. Seeing Max have that same feeling with his smile was great to see.
The barret kill was a masterful move to justify his aucense in the battle against jenova and to make Sephirtoh a ice cold killer antagonist that actually kill many characters in the history even if it come back to life like barret here. Remeber so many histories there where the antagonist is a super bad man but dont kill anyone in the whole plot XD whispers at least served for that kind of things here, to make some some impresive change that dont change the plot really and to add new content, like the final battle. We got a good final battle for midgard thank to that and the plot can go like always after that (nomura say that the history will go like always, but we will got this expantions)
Also a nice nod to the fact that originally the devs planned for Barret to die. And we get thrust into a battle with Jenova immediately afterwards just like with Aerith in 1997.
And remember, next time wont be any plot ghosts to save anyone.
I almost felt like it made sense. One of my original complaints about original FF7 was that the entire Midgar section was Barret's whole story arc in a nutshell. ESPECIALLY in this game. Everything after that just seemed to relegate him to nothing more than dumb comic relief, or just going through the motions and just kind of THERE.
The ONLY thing the game EVER does with him after this, is more about Marlene and Dyne. There's a flashback as to why and how Barret lost his arm in Corel, but that flashback could have been placed anywhere. Even in this game, really. So even Barrets later Corel plot was more about other characters and nothing coming full circle for him.
So yeah, when that happened I ALMOST thought they were going to keep it like that, since it made too much sense for him to die here, too.
But i'm sure when parts 2 and on come out of this, now that they aren't bound by the original, they can develop Barret and give him more of a post-Midgar purpose.
This game just has too many moments that brought tears to my eyes. That 3rd phase is probably the most nostalgic thing I've ever experienced, even in the context of this game.
